Moving from MacBook to iMac

I am moving to a new iMac but want to keep on using my MacBook. On starting my new iMac do I have to give it the same apple ID / amin etc as the MacBook in order to ensure access to my mail / icloud account, apps etc on the new device ? I do not want to use migration assistant for various reasons.

See Pondini's Setup New Mac guide. IMO, there are no good reasons to use anything but the Setup Assiatant to migrate on first boot.

  • Moving from Macbook to Imac 10.7.4

    I have a macbook 4,1 Black Core2duo at 2.4gh  I am geting a Imac 8,1 or 9,1 and its a Intell Core2duo from the most I know about it,
What would be the best way to move. I have 10.7 on a usb key. I do not have Time Macheen or any form of backups at all!
I was thinking the best way to move is via fire wire and just use CCC to do a system clone to keep everything how I have setup and make it easy.
Some one told me was to Clean install on the Imac and then Use OSX migration assitant to coppy my macbook and how its set up. they also said they never used it though.
But how well does migration assitan work?
Do have bought apps from out side the app store and I have some apps that frends gave me. How would be the best way to get them over alright?
Or should I just start with a fresh install on the imac?
I'm honsitly leaning towards the system migration, and if that fails i'd just do a clone.

The I would use the Migration before I make a useracount in the computer first boot with the 10.7 install btw. I herd that migration assasitan.app will make a second user.

  • When I transferred my iPhoto from macbook to iMac it created double events for each, how do I correct this?

When I transferred my iPhoto from macbook to iMac it created double events for each, how do I correct this?

    How did you do it?
    Here's what should work:
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

I transferred files and photos from MacBook to iMac via ethernet cable and using migration assistant. However every time I transferred, it created a separate user and it transferred all files and photos again and again. So now I have 3 users accounts with all files and photos saved 3 times on same iMac !! Any idea how to avoid this ?

Yes, you ran into a very understandable problem.
When you use Migration Assistant, it cannot over-write the account that you happen to be using at the time. Upon migrating accounts, it will tell you that it is going to create a new one, but that message is easy to miss.
If you have three identical accounts, log in to the account you want to keep, and delete the redundant ones in System Preferences > Users & Groups.
Now that you know, the easiest way to migrate accounts is to use Setup Assistant when you first get a new Mac. That eliminates any possibility for this to occur, but most people are so eager to use their new Mac that they elect to migrate later.
That's OK too, but in that case you would want to create a temporary account whose sole purpose is to run Migration Assistant so that you may migrate your old one with an identical name. Be sure to give the new account Administrator privileges. When that finishes you would log in to the newly migrated account, and delete the temporary account.

  • How do I transfer files from macbook to iMac?

can I transfer filels directly from macbook to imac or do I have to do it through dropbox or bluetooth?

Easiest and quickest way is to connect the two machines with an ethernet wire...they will automatically network with each other.
The hard drive of the MacBook should appear on the desktop of the iMac, open it, find the files you want to transfer and drag-and-drop to the appropriate folder of the iMac.

How do I transfer photos from macbook to imac?

There are serveral ways.  Depending on how many there are you can email them to yourself.  You could also put them on a flash drive and download them onto your iMac.  Another way could be to Airdrop them (I suggest putting them all in a folder or compressing them to a .zip if you do this) from one to another.  Those would be the most simple ways to do it.

  • My Photoshop CS6 Extended did not transfer properly from Macbook to iMac. I am being asked to 'buy' it.

My Photoshop CS6 Extended did not transfer properly from Macbook to iMac. It was treated as a trial and now I am being asked to 'buy' it.

I have run into this before. Click on "license this product" on the Trial countdown screen.
Sign in if asked with your Adobe ID/Password  The Cloud is an option for those who do not have a serial number license. It isn't mandatory.
Then look for the "I have a serial number" option.
And enter it from there and activate. Your trial should convert to Photoshop Standard or Extended depending on the serial number.
Of course migrating or restoring from Time Machine does break licensing.
So aside from uninstall, run the Cleaner tool Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
and use Disk Utility to verify your disk and run a "Repair Permissions" before install.

  • Move Logic from MacBook to iMac

Hi, i recently moved from my old macbook to the new imac and i would like to know how to move Logic from one pc to the other.
I checked in the app store but only the new Pro x is available and i don't have anything in the purchased area.
    Someone can help me?
    Paolo

    Paolo,
    Just to clarify,
You will have to install Logic Pro 9 from the DVDs you have as part of Logic Studio 2.0 (It is the fiull version yes? If not remember you will also need your previous Logic Pro 8 serial.. as well as the Logic 9 upgrade serial to install)
Once you have installed Logic Studio via DVD you must update it via  OS X's update utility as Logic will not work correctly until you do so..
So, yes, grab an external DVD drive... and use that.
You could use other methods but the reality is, installing from scratch is the only real way to avoid all kinds of issues that using such things as restoring from Time Machine backups or using the Migration Assistant, typically cause.
As you have a new Mac.. might as well install it the right way giving you a good clean fresh start

  • Migration from Macbook to iMac

I have just moved from PC to Apple so go easy on me
I am sure I am skipping a step, but I am having a problem with Migration. I have a 2008 Macbook and a 2008 iMac both running 10.5. I have tried to use Migration twice. The way I understand the Migration tool is that everything should be setup like on my Macbook is this not correct (photos, iTunes, Movies, etc...)
What it is doing is creating another user (I think) but it will not let me access any of the information. Am I doing something wrong or do I just not understand what the program does?
    Thanks

    That's correct.

Migration Assistant works best when you run it directly from Setup Assistant on a new Mac. It can be problematic in just the way you describe if it's run at a later date.
If you want one Mac to be an exact copy of the other, I'd suggest SuperDuper, free for cloning. Then, just erase your MacBook or your iMac and clone your entire drive to it. You also get rid of that other user account.

  • Transfering Aperture Files from MacBook to iMac

I have Aperture on both a MacBook and iMac. I want to transfer photos, as aperture projects, from my MacBook onto my iMac. I can't seem to make this happen. Currently, I connect the 2 computers, use the MacBook as an external drive and drag the projects onto the iMac desktop and then import them from the desltop into Aperture. Very, very slow. Any suggestions on how to send Aperture projects on the MacBook straight into Aperture (as projects) on the iMac. Thanks very much for any advice. Anthony
    iMac5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

There is a very big difference in speed depending on whether you transfer projects with referenced images, or managed images.
Saving/exporting projects with referenced files is really fast! (but of course you need to reconnect the master files if you haven't stored them on an external drive while importing).
I could be wrong but I believe almost everyone here waits for a solution to synchronize a laptop and desktop seamlessly. since most user seem to have adopted the paradigm "laptop: use while/after photoshoot" --> "desktop: edit and adjust"....
my temporary solution is to use the same external disk in most cases for masters, and export import "approjects". It's tricky, but works as a temporary compromise.

  • Missing Media error after moving project from MacBook to iMac

I can see the project in iMovie fine, and the audio track information bars are still showing in the editing window, but the background music track is now called "output" instead of the song name, even though I added that song to the iTunes library. That isn't a big deal, but when it comes to the Voiceover tracks it is a huge pain because I'll lose all the lipsyncing I have done. (When doing outdoor interviews, in order to defeat wind noise I use lavalier mics and digital recorders to produce separate wav files for the questions and answers.) Any ideas how to relink the tracks?

In Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.
For opening your domain file in Lion for the first time or to switch between multiple domain files  Cyclosaurus has provided us with the following script that you can make into an Applescript application with Script Editor. Open Script Editor, copy and paste the script below into Script Editor's window and save as an application.
Just launch the application, find and select the domain file you want to open and it will open with iWeb. It modifies the iWeb preference file each time it's launched so one can switch between domain files.
do shell script "/usr/bin/defaults write com.apple.iWeb iWebDefaultsDocumentPath -boolean no"delay 1
    tell application "iWeb" to activate
You can download an already compiled version with this link: iWeb Switch Domain.
WARNING: iWeb Switch Domain will overwrite an existing Domain.sites2 file if you select to create a new domain in the same folder.  So rename your domain files once they've been created to something other than the default name.

  • "Share Screen" not working from MacBook to iMac

    Hello friends.
I have an iMac (OS 10.6.6, 3.06 GHz core 2 Duo) and a MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.6, 2,53 GHz core 2 Duo)
It's been a while since I had this problem, and I could not solve it.
When I try to connect from iMac to MacBook (from Finder, in shared computers). I click into Share Screen and the login panel appears. After I type the user/password, the program "Share Screen" crashes and never get connected.
It doesn't happen in the other way. I have tried to replace the program from one computer to other and still happening. I have the crash report in case it is needed.
I hope that you could help me fixing this problem, as I am desesperated.
    Thanks in advance,
    David

Usually when a program crashes in this way, it's a problem with the program itself rather than a configuration error.
Have you tried the "Repair Permissions, Zap PRAM, Repair Disc" sequence?
    Good luck,
    Archie

  • Moving from MacBook Pro to Macbook

I am giving my daughter my macbook pro (2008 model) for her to use in college. I bought a brand new macbook. I am trying to transfer my stuff from the 'Pro to the 'Book but when I do so I keep getting an error message. I used wireless first and when that did not work I tried ethernet. Since the 'Book does not have firewire but I have save my entire 'Pro on an external disk with TIme Machine, can I use TM to restore the files, etc., to my 'Book? What other options do I have for moving my stuff from one to the other? Thanks for your help.

If you have an external hard drive that supports a USB connection you can transfer files via this hard drive. Similarly you can use a flash drive if you have one with sufficient capacity to conveniently move your data. Here's what you most likely will need to transfer:
Folders You Can Move to Your new Mac
From the Home folder copy the contents of Documents, Movies, Music, Pictures, and Sites.
    In your /Home/Library/ folder:
/Home/Library/Application Support/AddressBook (copy the whole folder)
/Home/Library/Application Support/iCal (copy the whole folder)
Also in /Home/Library/Application Support (copy whatever else you need including folders for any third-party applications)
    /Home/Library/Keychains (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Mail (copy the whole folder)
    /Home/Library/Preferences/ (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/iTunes (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Safari (copy the whole folder)
/Home /Library/Calendars (copy the whole folder)
    If you want cookies:
    /Home/Library/Cookies/Cookies.plist
    /Home/Library/Application Support/WebFoundation/HTTPCookies.plist
    For Entourage users:
Entourage is in /Home/Documents/Microsoft User Data
    Also in /Home/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
    For FireFox:
    /Home/Library/Applications Support/FireFox
    /Home/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox.plist
