Moving from one computer to another w/o messing up the iPhone setup

i want to try and start syncing with a new computer i am about to get without having to wipe the iPhone
is there anyway that i can move all the relevant files from my old desktop to a new one so that the iTunes playlists and the apps in folders stay as they are now?
i know it is not just a matter of copying over the iTunes folder, because there must be files in folders like HD & ~/App Support or HD & ~/Pref, and quite possibly more
but there may also be a problem that the computer number is associated with the syncing, and that it cannot be done
either way, i want to give it a go, so does anyone know if there is a knowledge base on this, or even an app that would allow me to achieve this task?
i am fully upto date with the software updates and iOS (with an iPhone 4)
many thanks

Yes it is, and no there is not.
I have done this twice in the last year - when switching from a PowerBook to my MacBook Pro, and after the hard drive failed on my MacBook Pro and was replaced under warranty.
but there may also be a problem that the computer number is associated with the syncing, and that it cannot be done
This is also incorrect. In regards to iTunes content, an iPhone can be synced with the iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. If you transfer the iTunes folder from your Music folder where all iTunes content is stored including 3rd party apps along with playlists, play count, etc. from one computer to another and you authorize the computer with your iTunes account with iTunes, you can sync your iPhone with the computer the iTunes folder was transferred to without losing any iTunes content on your iPhone and as if you aren't syncing with a different computer.
The same applies with photos if you are using iPhoto. All you need to do is transfer the iPhoto Library from one Mac to another and nothing will have changed.

I moved all my music and itunes from one computer to another. I now have most of my artist that have duplicate songs and sometimes three copies of the same song for some reason. Some artist it didn't affect at all but that is a minority. How can I clean this up without going through every line in my folder and deleting the copies? I have like 25K songs. I hope someone can help.

  • How to transfer app data from one mac to another without using syncing of the iphone?

Right, recently I have tried to change which computer my Iphone syncs with so that my older mac can be sold or disposed of in some profitable form. I have successfully synced all of my music off of one mac onto another via home sharing at which point I connected my phone to my new computer which suggested that the phone needed a software update. Immediately after doing this I realised that my updated Iphone 3GS would no longer sync to my old computer and attempted to sync it just to confirm this- it failed and stated that the iphone could only sync with itunes 10.1 which is a higher spec than that mac can hold. I then feeling doubtful that things would work out tried to carry on as if this problem were absent but I later discovered that I could only transfer the apps that I had synced to my phone to my new mac and all unsynced apps appeared lost because as I stated previously I could not sync with my older mac which contains all of their data. I have consulted the online apple manual for the phone and all it states is the method of transferring purchases in itunes which I tried and is what lead to the copying of my synced apps on to my new mac. What I am asking is is their anyway that I can 'cheat' so to speak at app transfers. I know that somewhere on my old mac the files are stored with the information of the lost apps but I cannot locate them and would not know how to merge them into my newer itunes if I were to copy and paste them to a memory stick (assuming that this is the right method) Other than this is their any other way of downgrading the upgrades of an iphone or somehow tricking itunes into running a higher update than the computer spec? I've tried all I can and this is really annoying- please help!!!!!!

I'm not entirely sure what you're asking... I'll have to look on my Mac at home to see exactly where they are, but you should just be able to copy all the apps from your old machine to thumb drive or over the network and put them in iTunes on the new one, then sync. Right click on one of the apps in your iTunes library and choose Show in Finder. That will point you to where they are.
If you're asking how you can do this and maintain data contained 'within' the apps themselves (high scores, game progress, etc), I don't think there's any way you can do that.

  • Moving from one computer to another

I have a new laptop. How do I move my library from the old one to the new computer

    Google it: http://www.google.co.uk/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=transfer+itunes+from+pc+to +pc&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&redir_esc=&ei=VxkATu3mPIi1hAeYr8GrDQ

Depending on the size of your library, and the capabilities of your old computer, you could burn some CDs or DVDs, or better still use a USB drive, either a hard drive or large capacity thumb drive.

  • [SOLVED]Moving from one computer to another

HI! I installed archlinux on external hard disk. I run arch from different computers, and if I succeful run on old computers (lga775), I can't to run on new computers (lga1155). I see error "device... UUID... not found" and rootfs shell.
if I try again to run on old computer - arch starts.
after from livecd "mkinitcpio -p linux" in new computer, arch starts, but doesn't start in old computer (similar error).
how to solve this problem without livecd?

    mkinitcpio creates 2 images :
1 tailored to the computer it's run on, initramfs-linux.img .
the other one ( initramfs-linux-fallback.img ) is intended to boot on as many computers as possible.
Try booting the fallback image on both systems.

  • HT4527 I completed all of the steps to transfer my library from one computer to another through home sharing, but the "Import" button is faded like I cannot use it and it won't let me import and complete the final step. How do I fix this?

    Its in the title.

Nothing in the instructions about transferring via "HomeSharing" states to use the Import button.
Have you actually read the instructions?
What specific step are you having an issue with?
The article from which your question was posted provides details on how to transfer the iTunes library multiple ways, did you try one of the other methods?

How do I transfer my firefox bookmark TOOLBAR from one computer to another? I have transferred the bookmarks, but the toolbar did not get transferred with it...

Here's what I do when transferring from one profile to another, on the same computer.
Go to "organize bookmarks", click on "bookmark toolbar", click on any bookmark in that category, click on menu "organize", click "select all", click on "organize" again, click "copy".
Then close firefox, start it again with the other profile, go to "organize bookmarks", click on "bookmark toolbar", click "organize", click "paste".
Now if you are moving to another computer, try save the copied content to a text file and move that text file to the other computer, then use "paste" inside firefox.
    Good luck.

How do I transfer keywords in Lightroom from one computer to another?

You know, in the one screen capture, from the old computer, we can see that the photo has the keyword "bees"
In the other screen capture, from the new computer, we cannot see the keyword "bees"
And better yet, show us the Keywording Panel instead of the Keyword List Panel
I am also concerned that you are showing us the original catalog on the new computer that you created via importing the photos. That's not what we want to see.
So please confirm  that you are using the catalog file that was copied from the old computer, and when placed on the new computer, you double-clicked on that exact catalog file, and then created the screen capture. Please confirm that you are NOT looking at the catalog you created by importing the photos.

I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

  • HT1349 I have just moved from one pc to another.  I had used 5 computers to attach to itunes.  I went in and disabled all 5 of my accounts but cant get the new computer to give me a prompt to authorize this computer.  Any ideas?

    Hellow everyone,
I have just moved from one PC to another.  They are windows pc's not macintosh.  When i installed itunes on the new computer it stated that I already had 5 devices authrorized for this account.  I did a little reading and went in and deathorized all 5 PC from the account as I am sure it was a couple pcs ago and a few iphones.   When I try and go in and authorize an account I cant see anywhere where there is a prompt to authorize the new PC.  I go into store and all it says is that there are no devices associated to this account.  What I would like to do is associate my new PC and my iphone to this account and hopefully restore from the cloud all of my music and programs.
Any idea what I am doing wrong here or how I can resolve this. Thanks in advance.
    Respectully.

  • Moving music from one computer to another using an iPod?

Thing is I want to buy a new laptop soon, and I'd like to move my music from my old computer to the new one, but I'd like to use my iPod 160GB as a hard disk to transport it, I've copied my music and video files along with other important data into folders I've created inside the iPod, it covers about a 3rd of the total space in the iPod. Question is, can I transport the music to the new computer without the system resetting the iPod to work with the new computer itself?
Last time(like 3 weeks ago) I had to reset my computer(the old one) because of viruses trouble and such, but I had previously saved my data inside the iPod, so I just copied the files to the same locations as they were in the previous configuration including the iTunes folders library files to a folder I created, then installed iTunes and then the iTunes library files to its own folder; it worked wonders because no files or playlists were lost, and when I plugged my iPod, I had no problems, but I reckoned no problems happened there because this iPod had been used with this computer already, so I wonder if this would be effective with a new computer.
So question remains, could I transport the files(all data) from the iPod to the new computer without it resetting itself and hence losing any of the data?

How to Copy and Move (Clone) your iTunes Library from One Computer to Another – or Archive Prior to a PC Re-Image or Reformat
This well-written iLounge Article is a must-read for anyone considering moving their Library to a new computer or a new location. Or, just wants a better understanding of how iTunes manages your music.
Below is the conceptual framework with related and important links. Apply and adapt it to your specific situation and equipment resources.
The safest, quickest, and most optimal method to move your Library to a new computer is to actually clone the entire ‘iTunes’ folder (directory) structure, rather than just copying just the song files. By copying the entire ‘iTunes’ folder and all sub-folders, you capture not only the music files, but the all-important ‘iTunes Library.itl’ database file (usually located in the ‘iTunes’ folder), which contains all the data about your songs (Playlists, Ratings, Play Counts, Last Played, Date Added, etc). See: What are the iTunes Library files?
Install iTunes on the new computer. Then go back to your old computer and move (copy) the "iTunes" folder which usually resides inside your "…\My Documents\My Music" folder from the old computer to the exact same place (both Drive Letter and complete Path) on the new computer. When you open iTunes on the new computer it will look and behave exactly the same way it did on the old, Play Counts, Ratings, Comments and all!
Preserving and transferring the original Library Database file (iTunes Library.itl) is most critical with iPhones as they can sync with only one iTunes Library at a time. This is managed by the ‘Library Persistent ID’ hardcoded within each iTunes database file. If your ITL file has a different ID, your iTunes/iPhone attachment will be seen as a new Library and you will need to completely re-sync your iPhone. This may or may not be an issue for you. See how to manage the LPID via This Link.
NOTE: It is usually safer moving files between computers with the same version of iTunes!!
iTunes Files to Copy and Move to your New PC (for iPod, iTouch &/or iPhone – use as needed)
    1) All Music Files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘iTunes Music’ folder)
    2) All Application Files in their current folder structure (usually located in the ‘Mobile Applications’ folder)
    3) All Album Artwork Files in their current folder structure (usually located in and under the ‘Album Artwork’ folder)
    4) The Library database file: ‘iTunes Library.itl’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    5) The Library XML file: ‘iTunes Music Library.xml’ located in the ‘iTunes’ folder
    6) The iTunes Library Extras.itdb and iTunes Library Genius.itdb files, also in the ‘iTunes’ folder
Some additional files to consider also include in a backup:
    7) Any XML playlist files created for Playlist retention
    8) The two iTunes.pref files (optional)
    i) C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    ii) C:\Documents and Settings\<your username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer Inc\iTunes.pref
    9) The XML file of Ratings, Play Counts and Last Played attributes saved from the main Library and created by Otto’s SaveRatings script (also optional, but recommended):
“Download this: http://ottodestruct.com/itunes/SaveRatings.zip . It's a program, just run it like any other program. Run it on the machine where you're copying the info from BEFORE you move the files to the new machine. Click the "Save Ratings" button and it'll create a ratings.xml file. Now when you move the files, move the program and this file as well. Then after you make your new iTunes library, run it again and click the "Restore Ratings" button. Voila, all your information is back in the Library. Well, most of it anyway, it's not perfect. It'll tell you what songs it couldn't figure out though, and there's usually not very many.”
    10) The folder(s) used to store and sync photos to your iPhone (if applicable)
    11) The iTunes created Backup of your iPhone usually located at:
    C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup
Here's a list of methods to copy and move your music files from one computer to another:
    1) Use an External Hard Drive (ExHD) to move the complete files and Folder structures from one computer to another (my preferred option). You can clone’ the entire ‘iTunes’ folder structure in one very easy step. Also great to have available for complete backups of your Library. External hard drives now run less than $100 for 500GBs-1TB of storage. See This Link
    2) Directly connect the two computers:
2a) Connect them through a Router &/or Network
2b) Directly connect using an Ethernet cable: Straight for using at least one Mac; or Crossover for PC/PC Instructions here.
2c) Connect them via a USB-to-USB Network Bridge. Example here. There are various types out there (use Google).
--Then copy the files from one computer to the other.
    3) Use the iPod as a transfer device, as this extensive Apple link explains. It will be a bit easier if your iPod has a larger capacity than your music collection, otherwise you will need to perform multiple copy/move transfers. This well written process also works fine while using any other data transfer medium (ExHD, Flash Drive, DVD, CD, Zipp, Jazz, etc.).
    4) Burn several DVDs (at 4.7GBs each) with your music data files and folder structure, and load them onto the new computer. Re-writable DVDs are more cost effective (if your DVD drive can manage these types).
    5) Burn 6x more on CDs (at 700MB each) than in #4 above and load the files and folders on the new computer. Re-writable CDs are more cost effective (if your CD drive can manage these types).
    6) Use a larger USB Flash drive (1GB - 4GB) to move the files and folders. Best if the flash drive is larger than your Library, otherwise you will need multiple copy/move transfers.
These are links to various additional instructions on performing the transfer (read them all, but some listed steps may not be required depending on your specific situation):
Switch from PC to Mac Using the iPod

Also, remember to Deauthorize your PC before you reformat it, dispose of it, or retire it from iTMS use (if applicable).

If CS5.5 was an upgrade from a previous version you purchased you will need the serial number for the previous version in order to confirm that the upgrade is valid.
