Moving From Sony Vegas

I am moving from Sony Vegas to FCP so I have some Vegas files that I need to render to use in FCP. Can I get some advice on what file type and compression settings I should use to render at?

I have around 15 tapes from my old Pana GS400 (DV PAL 16:9) captured with Vegas and they are AVI files.
I have had no problem using them in FCP 5.14 and FCP 7.
The first time I imported them FCP said something about that they whore not "optimized" or something like that.
I just clicked "don´t show this message again" and all was fine and no need to renderer them.
Cheers

  • Importing a project from Sony Vegas

I'm trying to import a project that was initially edited in Sony Vegas to do audio and color correction in Final Cut. Apart from rendering the project out to an HDV tape, and re-importing it into Final Cut through Log and Capture, what is the best methodology so as to retain the most data for timelines, etc.
We can even go so far as to have the original hard drives, but I just can't fathom how to migrate into final cut.
    Suggestions?

The back to tape method sounds good. Otherwise using flip4mac to import an intermediate AVI's is also good.
    Does Vegas export EDL's ?

  • Choppy video in iMovie/iDVD from Sony HDD Camcorder

I feel like I must be doing something wrong here, I've just moved from a windows XP machine to a nive shiny iMac which is lovely and I just want to hug it a lot, but.....
My DVD's just aren't coming out right, here's me thinking Macs were renowned for their video editing, but all my stuff is looking better from windows.
To explain further, I connect my Sony DCR-SR32 to the mac via USB (the Sony is a hard disk camera which records to mpeg2) iMovie recognises the camcorder and allows me to import all my clips. I spend hours putting together some holiday footage with appropriate fades, titles and cuts. I then import the finished project into iDVD and spend more hours messing with the motion video menus and getting everything looking right.
I then burn to a DVD and it looks horrible, the frame rate looks like it's about 10 fps and it's jumping around all over. After some research, I find that Perion is probably to blame, and I can work around it by exporting from iMovie as a DV file or removing Perion which I've creating a DVD.
So the output is better, not so jerky, but something is not quite right, while it's not jerky its not quite as smooth as if should be, and the colours seem to be a little more pixelated a bit like when a divX movie struggles in an area of low contrast.
I'm comparing this to running XP in a parallels session, attaching the camcorder and hitting the "Disc burn" button which burns a lovely smooth and colourful DVD without a problem.
I thought this must be an issue with the conversion, convert to h.264 when the file is pulled off the camcorder, and then again into mpeg to burn must be missing something, but I took the raw mpeg files and got Toast to burn a DVD and that was the same "not quite right" result. I've read a lot about OSX's difficulties with mpeg2 and suggestions to use Streamclip with the MPEG quicktime plugin - will this do anything better, it just seems that with any conversion you're going to lose some quality, and converting several times to get something into iMovie then again when iDVD prepares the disk seems to be asking for more trouble ?
I've double checked all the obvious things, like is it set to PAL, and is the DVD burning at the best quality. I'm even burning to disk images to take the physical DVD out of the equation.
But still the results are not satisfactory. I really don't want to have to run windows still, iMovie and iDVD - although fairly basic were really nice to use, and the overall result is great... if I could just get it to look right.
Any idea on what might be wrong in all this, or how I can get a better quality movie to burn ?

Ok, this time I tested it in playback mode.
Connected USB. Chose HDD connect. NO NAME appeared on desktop. Opened iMovie (started my stopwatch at this point). Detected camera - scanning. Generating thumbnails (at this stage it is generating thumbnails for all the clips I have on my camera. For the record, I have 6 clips of 52secs, 22secs, 40secs, 27secs, 29secs and 1min). Finally, after around 1m50s, the 'Import From' window pops up showing me the thumbnails for each clip. I stop the stopwatch.
I only want to import the 1min clip this time, just for timing reference. To import this 1min clip on my imac (see my mac profile below) took 2m30s. This includes generating the thumbnails too, although I'm not quite sure why it does this again. I think 2m30s is very slow considering that DV would/should import in real time.
Anyway, those are my findings today and I for one now have a better understanding of how to connect my camera...playback mode only!
    Thanks.

  • Capturing video into Sony Vegas and s video doesn't funct

I can capture video from a DVD player through the ZS2 by feeding through the composite cables, but not s video. Feeding into the firewire port with a digital video camera works fine. However, I have to capture into Ulead, then move the clips into Sony Vegas where I want to edit. If I try to capture directly into Vegas there is some conflict keeping the program from loading, or it locks up the computer and I have to shut off the computer to get out. Also, I can't find what the cmss button is for.

    Hi,
To capture video using the A2 VE you'll need to use Ulead to do the initial capture. Once done and the video is on the PC you can then use your preferred Video creation tools to manipulate the file(s).
    Hope this hel

  • On my pc I used Sony Vegas to edit video, what's a similar program I could use on a Mac??

I used Sony Vegas on my desktop PC, and I got it free when I was in college from our online downloads website...but now that I graduated last year, And just now got a Mac, I was wondering what the cheapest alternative would be for Sony Vegas.  I don't really like the imovie so far compared to it just because Sony did a ton of stuff and I miss it.  Can anyone help me out?
    Thank you.

Heh, heh, welcome to the Real World, where Adobe practically rapes you for everything but the free Reader plugin. Yes, you'l remember fondly the fun and carefree days when good stuff was on the campus server...
If you've still got the Vegas installer at hand, could try and set up a virtual PC running an appropriate flavor of Windoze and run it there. Oracle VirtualBox is free, you'll just have to supply your Windows activation and install media.

  • How does Sony Vegas Pro 12 compare to Premiere Pro CS6?

About 2 months ago, I purchased Premiere Pro CS6 retail box version from Best Buy.  With everything going to the CC, I can't get upgrades unless I join the CC.  This is NOT something I want to do!  I would like to know if the chroma keying and image stabilization in Sony Vegas pro 12 are just as good or similar to Premiere Pro? I already read about how to transfer the product license on the Adobe website.  If I decide to make the switch, I will list my Premiere Pro on Ebay. Another reason why I may want to get Vegas Pro is because I found out about the AVCHD bug in Premiere AFTER I purchased it.  It has been over a year and Adobe has still not fixed the bug. I have a feeling they will never fix the bug because of the new CC vesion.  I am currently about half way through the classroom in a book from Adobe and have not yet edited any of my own videos.  My video camera is a Canon Vixia HF S20 and my computer is a new Dell XPS 8500 with Core i7 and 12 GB of ram. Just a bit frustrated on what to do.  If I can't sell my Premiere Pro for a good enough price, I will keep it and switch to Vegas or some other program after it becomes obsolete.

You can download a fully functional demo of Sony Vegas 12 Pro.  That's what I did.  So far I like it and will be making the switch to Sony Vegas 12 Pro.
They also have Suite version which include HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  This program is like After Effects.  I haven't started playing with that yet.
Also, there is Movie Studio 12 Platinum Visual Effects Suite 2.  That's a mouth full.  Anyhow, it is based on Sony Vegas 12 and it comes with HitFilm 2 Express.  The Express version is a stripped down version of HitFilm 2 Ulimate.  The Express version is still a great program for adding effects.  For some people Movie Studio 12 is all they will need,
Both version, Vegas and Movie Studio, have GPU acceleration which is really nice.
I also just picked up Corel PaintShop Pro X5 Ultimate.  It sells for $69.95 and it can open and save .PSD files.  So I don't have to worry about all of the .PSD files I saved in Photoshop
Right now I have CS5 and CS6.  Premiere CS6 has a lot of bug, the AVCHD spanning clips, slow motion that jitters, caching problem, slower exports, etc.

  • Unable to transfer photos from Sony Ericsson P1i to Tiger 10.4.11

Hi, How do I transfer photos from Sony Ericsson P1i to my PB G4? I have tried Sony's Media Sync, Isync, Bluetooth and none has worked. Desperately seeking ways to save all my valuable photos on this phone. Hope someone can help. Many thanks.

    Am I to install the m600kext and then change the m600 id = 57392 / p1i id = 57490 accordingly?
I think so, locate this file...
    /System/Library/Extensions/M600USBFileEnabler.kext
Highlight it and Show Package Contents, a window will open that has a Contents folder showing, inside that folder is the file we need...
    Info.plist
Drag that to Text Edit & you'll see this...

  • Importing .sfk Sony Vegas files

    Hello,
My friends recently recorded at a studio at which they were using Sony Vegas 9. I have the .sfk files and I have all the .wav files from all the takes. Rather than try to puzzle together the takes from 14 songs, I was hoping there is a way to import the .sfk files... but I can't seem to find anything about it. Has anyone done this before?

    spectorjohn wrote:
Thanks. I haven't had an opportunity to fully play around and see what is there, but a quick look is worrying. There are about 1,000 wav files and although they are named for what mic they represent (ie: bass, right tom etc), the rest of the file is just a default numbering scheme that doesn't seem to relate to anything other than in which order that file was recorded. I was hoping I could import his sfk files and have the times for where the edits are.
That sounds like an impossible task as the sfk files don't contain that kind of info, it's just data for a graphic rendition of the wav file.
Question... are the wav files at least separated by song.. a folder that holds all the files to song1, song2 etc...?
If so import all of the files to one song, select all files (Apple key + A) then under the regions menu select "move regions to original record position".

  • Can I run sony Vegas pro 8.0 on a macbook or macbook pro?

I'm thinking about buying my first mac book, but I need to know if I can run sony. I have read things about the bootcamp program, but I don't understand fully. I use Sony to edit videos, amvs, mmv, meps, ect. Can I use sony on a mac without getting any viruses?
I recently bought a laptop, but it ended up being a lemon. Ive had to take it back to best buy over 5 times now for issues. Which is why I'm looking for a new laptop.
I know Sony is a program normally ran on windows, so will running it on the macbook make it open to viruses?
I want the mac to stay away from viruses, ect.
I use kapersky anti virus right now. Is it recommended to put a virus protection on the mac?
Does anyone use Sony on their macbook and have any advice for me?
I'd love any advice you can offer me!
    Please help!
    Thank you all very much!

The Sony Vegas application will more than likely run on a Mac under BootCamp. When you're running windows on a Mac that partition is as prone to virus as any other windows machine. If you're going to run windows you should definately run virus protection on the windows partition. Virus protection for the Mac partition is not necessary but there are a few free applications that some folks run just to be safe. Here's some info on BootCamp

  • MTS- Sony Vegas- FCP

I have a client who has HD footage that was shot as MTS. He's done his editing in Sony Vegas and he's ready to export his video. I will then integrate that video into a 720p60 timeline in Final Cut Pro. What would be his best export setting for me to then use in FCP? I realize I might have go to Compressor to convert it but I'm unfamiliar with Vegas and I don't know what to tell him. Also, I don't want his render to be uncompressed. It'll be way to big. What would be an Apple ProRes-like export codec for him to use out of Vegas?

Sony Vegas reads ProRes files. QT for PC must be installed first, if it is not already there.
[Edit] Sorry, read the OP incorrectly. Render to MXF 422 35 mbps in Vegas. This format imports well into FCP. A free importer from Sony is required in FCP however. Google will find it for you if you do not already have it.

  • Timecode missing from Sony NX5U NXCAM

A well documented problem exists in reading the timecode from Sony NXCAM NX5U cameras.  When importing the timecode Premier CS5 always reverts to 0:00 for each clip.  Edius always was able to read the timecode.  FCP has a new release that can read the timecode now.  Has anyone heard anything about any effort by Adobe to fix this problem?  Interestingly and almost (almost) humorously, Vegas 9 also has the problem with not being able to read the timecode..

Like other cameras that shoot AVCHD, you need to preserve the folder structure from the cards in order for timecode to be read. I don't think that timecode is recorded into the MTS files, but in metadata files stored along in the folder structure. I believe these are the CPI (clip information) files inside the PRIVATE\AVCHD\BDMV\CLIPINF folder. I don't have an NX5U folder structure to test, but I do have one from a Panasonic HMC150. If I move/rename the CLIPINF folder, all the clips start 00:00:00:00. If the folder is there, however, the timecode is read.
The upshot is that if all you have are MTS files, Premiere won't read the timecode.

  • Transfer epub files from sony reader/pc to playbook

I am having trouble transferring epub files from sony reader/pc to playbook and then finding them on the playbook after copying completed?  Please help!

I just did this the other day for my wife, took some books that she purchased on her Sony Reader and moved them to her new PB. You need to download Calibre ( free) and also download software that will remove the DRM from the books that are on the Sony. I bought it from www.ebook-converter.com , was $29.95 US. I've read that there are also free ones out there but I went with this b/c it was mentioned in several posts. Go to your reader library on line, download the book, use the DRM and Calibre and then you'll have the file to transfer to your PB. You'll also need an e-pub reader, several on the Appworld, I used Book Reader.Of course I bought and paid for the Sony books so I see nothing wrong in just getting them to a devise that I want to read them on. This same process works for library books that you check out that have DRM enbedded. I Hope this helps.

  • Problem Capturing from Sony HVR-A1U to FCP 5 using HDV preset

    Hi,
i just got a Sony HVR-A1U and am new to HDV. I am a professional editor so i have a full understanding of FCP. Here are my problems and questions.
Specs of system : Power Mac Dual 2Ghz G5, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200 64mb (Do i need a better GFX card?)
    1) When i setup the project settings at the start I selected HDV 1080i/60, it automatically states "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding Hardware card." I am quite sure that i have all the codecs i could have without having a hardware card, since i don't have a hardware card. Does this mean that i need a blackmagic HD card or a Kona card just to process the HD into FCP as HDV 1060i/60 even though it is through firewire?
    2) I advanced to the Log & Capture mode with the HDV settings, set properly across the board. I can not see picture, can hear audio and can log clips. When i capture it captures black for video but captures the audio just fine. I figure this is because of the missing codec which encodes HDV for FCP from Sony's HDV encoding?
    3) I can capture on the fly with the Apple Intermediate Codec, no Log and Capture screen comes up, just a dialogue box that asks me to name the clip. I understand what this codec is and find that i am stuck at the moment using this until I find a way to capture the other way. Is there anyway to have the Log and Capture screen launch using this codec?
    4) I can not have pre-logged clips using other methods and then batch capture them using the Apple Intermediate Codec, it just reverts to capturing on the fly. Anyway to Batch Capture using the Apple Intermediate Codec?
Funny thing is that i can digitize fine in iMovie HD although i don't know what codec it is using. This totally baffles me that it works in a certain manner, i can get the job done, but not the way i should be able to. I've been using FCP since '99 and have never encountered something in this manner. And since this is my first experience with FCP and HDV i have nowhere to go from here except get some help or settle for what i can do and change my normal post-production workflow.
A question i really want to know about is whether i need an extra hardware compnent, i know i asked that question above, and i could understand if i did. (i.e GFX card or Capture card - even though i am going through firewire)?
I appreciate any help, i might not respond over the next couple of weeks because i am shooting in Europe and will be back stateside at the start of February, so i will not be active on this post until then. Any input would be great and when i get back i will have loads of footage that i will need to digitize, so i will be very open to help with troubleshooting as well.
    Thanks again!!!
    Gabe
    PowerMac G5 DP 2Ghz, 1.5GB Ram, GeForce FX 5200, 20" Cinema Display   Mac OS X (10.4)

All the settings are proper, like i said, it captures with the apple codec for HDV but that is only good for on the fly. iMovie captures it fine, it's just when the settings in FCP are set for HDV it won't capture picture through log and capture.
Are you guys actually reading my post??? I have given all the information that i can, settings are proper, so the post so far are completely redundant.

  • Do Not Buy From Sony

Do not buy from Sony if you work. After 3 delivery attempts FedEx is required by Sony to ship it back to them. You CANNOT go to a FedEx facility to pick it up. After 5 phone calls with Sony support no one was willing to help me. I don't know how people who WORK buy things from this company. I will never buy anything from them ever again and I am canceling my Sony credit card. Thanks for nothing Sony.
