Moving home and application folders to a new drive

i have a couple of questions that may seem stupid, but since i do not know the answers, here they are:
- on a mac pro with two drives, can i just drag my home folder to the new drive to move it there?
- can i move the application folder into my home folder so that whenever i move my home folder to a new computer, my applications follow me without having to reinstall them? is this going to cause problems with the system library or something?
Thank you
Francesco

1. No, except for creating a backup copy of your home folder. Changing the location of the active home folder requires changing the home property for your user account in the NetInfo Manager, which is located in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder, or using a symbolic link to tell Mac OS X where to find the home folder. If the NetInfo method is used, the desired path will be along the lines of /Volumes/volumename/Users/username/.
2. Only for applications you drag-copied to the Applications folder. Applications which were installed with Mac OS X or with other installation programs should be left where they are.

  • Two Library and Application Folders

I have two library and application folders. one is under my mac os x drive and the other is under my home folder. i was wondering if i can combine them so they are only under my home folder.

    Matt

Leave the Library folders alone: they are there for a reason (items in the hard disk>Library folder are available to all users). However you can shift the items in the Applications folder in your Home directory to the main Applications folder on the hard disk - the only reason for having applications in your Home folder is to deny their use to another user. Don't do anything to the main Applications folder - apart from adding things to it - it's important that Apple programs such as iPhoto should reside in it.

  • Moving Pictures and Music Folders

Having run out of space on my hard drive, I have installed a new 1Tb internal disk. I have moved my Aperture library and some other large folders from (user/library) to the new disk and have added the new folders to the Finder sidebar.
How can I now make sure that applications such as iPhoto and iDVD (especially iDVD) will find the folders on the new disk when I click on the media/pictures tabs when making DVDs?
    Regards,
    Cliff

    To move the iPhoto Library
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
iDVD will find the content of the iPhoto Library if you do it as described above.

  • How can I copy and relink home and group folders?

    Hi,
I'm upgrading our server from Tiger to Leopard Server. My main concern about doing the upgrade is that in the process I am swapping the secondary drive that holds the OD account list and all the home folders for our students (1000 odd folders) for a larger drive, so I think an upgrade is out of the question... I believe I need to start afresh - is this correct, or can I upgrade and simply clone the secondary drive? I have backed up the user list in Workgroup Manager and archived the Open Directory to a portable drive. In addition to this, I'm adding clients from another part of the college to now host them on my server, so I need to copy their accounts from one server (Tiger) to this new one... all in all, this seems like a bit of headache.
Any and all help is very welcome!

Open one document in Pages v5.5.3, Open a second document in Pages v5.5.3. Select, copy, and paste one page between source and destination documents. Document objects such as Text boxes, shapes, images, tables, etc must be individually selected, copied, and pasted.

  • My documents and application folders are no longer on the dock, where did they go?

my documents and applications are no lnger on the dock, where did they go, how do I put them back?

Items in your Dock are actually aliases. The original items should be where they always were. The Applications folder is at the top level of your hard drive, and your Documents folder is in your home folder.
To recreate the those items in your Dock, open a Finder window (Finder > File menu > New Finder window.) For your Documents folder, click on the icon on the left of the Finder window that has your username on it next to a house icon. Look for your Documents folder. Drag this folder into the Dock. That places an alias of it in the Dock (the original item remains where it was.)
To get so you can see the Applications folder, click it on the left side of the Finder window, then go to the Go menu and select Enclosing Folder. Now drag the Applications folder from here into the Dock.
That should do it. Best of luck.

  • PC - Moving catalog and directory structure to a new HD

Having filled my internal HD with images, I went out and purchased a new and bigger external hard drive. I want to move my images to the new drive while preserving both my directory structure and catalog information. From what I can see of the "move" command in PS Elements, it moves selected images to a new directory, but that's not what I want to do. I probably have a hundred named folders and I would like to keep the images in folders of the same name on the new drive. I don't want to have to move one directory at a time. Copying through the file manager can obviously do this, but I don't know if it will preserve my tags, etc.
Is there a straightforward way to move files from one drive to another that preserves both directory structure and catalog information?
    Thanks in advance.
    Artie

Humm, this is strange-Version 4 is supposed to move entire folders; Version 3 did not do this.
    Okay, Plan B.
Open Elements and do a Full Backup and point to your external hard drive.
When this has finished running, do a Restore. You should get a pop up asking if you want to use the existing folder structure. Answer Yes and point to your External HardDrive (EHD). This should copy your photos and the Organizer file over to your (EHD).
Now look in Preferences under Files (I think, don't have program open) and you will see one value for where to store photos and one for Organizer location. Change these to your EHD so future photos and tags/collections are written to the EHD.
Verify all your tags and collections came over correctly.
If you are satisfied the transfer went correctly, you can erase your photos from your hard drive to free up space. You can also delete the Organizer file if you want.
Option 2-Use Windows Explorer and move all the files from your hard drive to your EHD. This will keep your folder structure, but will cause havoc with Organizer.
Open Organizer and do File>Reconnect All Missing. It will be all of them. You should have an option to change the drive to your EHD. It may take quite a while to reconnect all of them, but since all the folders/files are the same name it should find them all.
If you wish, you can change the drive location manually. However, I've found many users 1) do not have MS Access on their machine and 2) are not experienced in using the program. If you are comfortable with the program, let me know and we'll get some directions.
Finally, I see a copy of the post in the Technical side. Since most forum users read both sides of this forum, I'm going to reference this thread in that post so anyone can see what we have tried so far.

  • Moving iTunes Mobile Applications folder to an alternate drive

I found out how to move the iTunes Mobile Applications folder to either an external drive or as in my case, from my 256GB SSD systems/application drive to a non-SSD drive on my desktop (3.0 TB in size). This is important for any iTunes users with their systems/applications on a SSD drive (i.e. on the C: drive but with constrained SSD drive space). In my case, my Mobile Apps folder is 40+ GB in size.
iTunes allows you to easily move your iTunes music folder to an alternate drive but it does not provide a means to move the Mobile Apps folder. I have confirmed this. However, in Windows Vista, 7 and 8, using the “mklink” command, you can set up a symbolic link from the iTunes Mobile Apps folder on the C: drive to the relocated Mobile Apps folder on another drive. iTunes thinks it is adding new Mobile Apps to the C: drive Mobile Applications folder, but it is actually updating the real Mobile Apps folder on the alternate drive. I’ve tried this approach and it works like a charm. The steps required are as follows:
    1. Copy the existing Mobile Apps folder and its content on the C: drive to its new location on an alternate drive on your desktop or to an external drive.
    2. Note and record the exact detailed path to the existing Mobile Applications folder as well as the exact detailed path for the new Mobile Applications folder
    3. Delete the existing Mobile Applications folder (You cannot create a symbolic link to a directory that already exists on that same drive)
    4. Open a Command Prompt (admin) window on your desktop. On Windows 8, this is easily done by right clicking the start icon on the bottom left of the desktop screen and selecting the Command Prompt (admin) option.
    5. change directory to C:\  (i.e., enter cd c:\)
    6.  enter the mklink command and press enter  (format mklink /d link_address   target_address) for my Windows system this looked like the following:
         mklink /d "C:\Users\Marv\Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications" "D:\Music\iTunes\Mobile Applications"
This command recreates the Mobile Applications folder on the C: drive in the exact place it was before, but only as a pointer to the real folder on the alternate or external drive. The link is transparent to iTunes and my 40+ GB Mobile Applications folder can be on a large drive rather than on my 256GB SSD systems/applications drive.

It requires elevation. If you find the command line application (cmd.exe), right-click, run as administrator, and paste the command, that will work.
However, this technique, which worked for me in the past, seems now to be failing. All new downloads are in the root of iTunes Media. The bizarre thing is that iTunes thinks it has put a downloaded file in the correct folder, so says it cannot play it, and if I move it manually to the correct folder, iTunes sees it without problems. I've tried mklink /d and mklink /j, neither works (the former shows the redirected target pathname, the latter behaves as if the target path is actually part of the native directory structure).

  • Moving home and BT's astounding level of incompete...

I'm posting on here in the hope that one of the mods can please intervene and help me with what I hoped would be the simplest request I'd ever make of any service provider, but BT have managed to turn it into an entirely insurmountable challenge.
On 13th August I used the BT website to place a Home Move order to transfer my phone service and Infinity to the home I was moving into on 22nd August. Same exchange, same number, same services. All seemed very straigtforward although I wasn't particularly happy that the first engineer appointment I could get was today, 28th August but the phone line would be transferred on 23rd August and I figured I'd be busy over the bank holiday anyway. The order details, including engineers appointment was confirmed in an email.
On 14th August I receive a phone call from BT advising me that the order had been cancelled as there was a line in the property through another provider (TalkTalk). I advised that I was aware of this, that TalkTalk had been confirmed to the then owner of the property that the service would cease on the 22nd August. Eventually I persuaded the 3rd individual I spoke to that there was a cease order on the line (I thought I had anyway) and he committed to me I would receive a phone call on my mobile on 23rd August to confirm the line transfer and engineers appointment.
As of 1930 on the 23rd I hadn't received the promised call so I rang BT. After navigating the interminable automated options I spoke with some who after a long explanation and having spoken to a couple of departments told me that there was a delay, but that the line would be live soon and she would "personally monitor this and see it through to a conclusion". I would also receive a phone call on the Tuesday (27th) to confirm the line was up and running and the engineers appointment would take place as scheduled on the 28th.
On Monday 26th (bank holiday) I received a text message advising that BT had tried to contact me without success and that the line was further delayed. I know that this statement was false as I had no missed call or voicemail on my mobile and had been in all day unpacking boxes. Prior to the text I had no calls, but made and received a number of calls throughout the day afterwards.
On Tuesday 27th at 0555 I received an email from BT confirming my engineer appointment for the 28th. At around 0825 (again, after navigating the automated selection and spending 20 mins on hold) I spoke with another member of the BT team who simply said that there "seemed to be a problem" with the order as it had been cancelled. I was getting nowhere with that individual who didn't seem to understand the situation at all, and was passed through to "Mustafa" who advised me he was a floor manager.
Mustafa actioned a cancellation of the apparently faulty order and promised to get back to me but told me that the cancellation could take "24 hours", his explanation however that this was due to competition law and BT not having unfair advantage was baffling. He did, around 11am to confirm that the cancellation had been confirmed and a new order placed. He would confirm to me when he had confirmation that that order was going through. Around 4pm he called back and left me a voicemail advising that the line would be live by mid-night and at that point he could "fast-track" the engineer appointment.
It's worth pointing out that between Mustafa's 11am and 4pm calls I received 2 text messages from BT reminding me about my engineers appointment on the 28th between 1pm-6pm.
On waking this morning I checked the phone line. Still nothing. I called BT again, eventually managing to speak to someone, but being cut off that I was out on hold. Again, I got through to someone who told me that my line was "on track" to be live on the 3rd September and the engineer out "as scheduled" on 4th September. When I advised that that was unacceptable I was told that "it is simple, my hands are tied". I asked to speak to a line manager and was told that it would do no good. When I insisted I was told to "just listen to my explanation". Again I insisted (politely, emphasising my understand that the individual was not responsible for setting the parameters of what they are allowed to do) and the individual simply disconnected the call.
I spoke with someone else, ran through the whole story again, was told the same as the previous individual had told me and that it was down to "another department". When I asked to speak to that department I was told that I couldn't. Wen I asked for the number of that department I was told they couldn't be called. When I expressed my scepticism that people working in that department did not have phones i was told they didn't. I asked again if I was just being refused the opportunity to speak to them and was again told that hey didn't have phones. At this point did advise the individual that I believed he was lying, i was put on hold. again, disconnected. Again I navigated through the automated selection, this time getting through to "Steven". Steven at least sounded quite empathetic and went off to speak to someone. Line was then disconnected.
Again, I went through the automated system, eventually speaking to "Christine" who is the only vaguely useful person I have managed to speak to. Unfortunately when she rang me back I was on another call, but she confirmed that she had managed to arrange for the "exchange engineers to get the phone line live before 8pm this evening". Whilst this was a step forward, it didn't address the Infinity install.
After ringing again (usual automated selection, usual 10 mins wait) and speaking to "Carla" I was put back on hold. Again, line disconnected.
Eventually I got through again and was pleased to once again be speaking to Christine. Once again Christine gave the impression of genuinely wanting to help. She reiterated that the phone line would be live today by 8pm and advising that the only way to escalate the delay in the engineer appointment was to cancel the Infinity order and place a new one. Again, this involves a 24 hour wait. So, apparently someone will get in touch on Friday (30th, 17 days after I placed my order). Christine took note of the fact that I can take time off work this week but am not able to next week Monday so the install needs to be done by Saturday, but she was honest enough to say that she didn't think "they" would do it that quickly.
It's not past 11pm on the 3rd day that I have been promised my phone line would be live. It still isn't. I am still none the wiser as to when I will receive my Infinity service. I have taken a day off work. I have spent what I believe to be more than 4 hours cumulatively on the phone with BT, at my expense as obviously I am calling from a mobile as BT have left me without a landline. I have been lied to on at least 4 occasions.
I appreciate that it's highly unlikely any mod will have read this far, I appreciate its a drawn out tale that you would get fed up reading. I have genuinely tried to be as concise as possible, so you can imagine how utterly fed up I am right now.
As I say, please can someone help me? I just want my phone line live and a BT engineer to visit my property this week to install Infinity. If BT are either unwilling or unable to provide me a service then I do wish someone would have the courtesy to just tell me and I will go and source an alternative provider (who will ironically have to deal with the same shambles to get BT to do the install service for them....).
    Many thanks

  • Moving Events and iPhoto library to a new Mac

I just picked up a new Mini for my HTPC. I would like to move the Events and photos that I already have on my other Macs to the new one. I exported all of the photos to a flash drive and then imported them in on the new Mini, but of course it just imported the photos. It did not organize them at all.
Bottom line, is there any way to move my existing library over to a new Mac without having to re-label all events and stuff like that?
    Thanks guys,
    Steve

I lost my iphoto Library when I was moving all my files over to my Mac Mini. I had a clean mini with Leopard and had my photo library on my external only. I was messing around with the Time machine and i think it did a back up which I stopped right away, but I think it deleted the iPhoto library and my iTunes library.(the mini probably had an empty iPhoto library) So now I used Data rescue to try and find it and all of the files from that external are on my mini's desktop with just numbered jpeg files & mp3 files. One folder says recovered music & recovered pictures. Of course there is nothing that says iphoto library and all the files are so mixed up.I have been going thru all the photos and just dragging them in, but it is getting so tedious....Help! Oh, and the photos are very pixelaed now....would that be because they are just jpeg files....I am not sure if they were prior to this whole problem. I have a feeling there is no way around this. Thanks in advance. Robin

  • Moved folders to a new drive, new drive letter help?

    Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem that I'd love to find a really easy answer to.  I bought a new PC, migrated all my old images to a hard drive that I was using as a backup for the past few years of images (I put all images in year folders and make catalogs based on the year) AND I migrated to LR3 at the same time.  Now It wants to know where all these lovely files are.  I've tried right clicking on the drive letter under "Folders" but I don't get an option to find the drive, it seems the only way I can go about finding all these images is to go through and link each individual sub-folder (we are talking about 200 folders here).  And here is what hurts the most - every time I go to find the folder the damn picker reverts to opening the lightroom catalog folder not the last folder I was in.  Is there any easier way to go about this?
    Thanks in advance
    Hali

I can (and have been) doing that with indvidual folders but I was hoping for an answer that would allow me to do that with the drive letter.  And I don't get something that says update folder location it says "find missing folder"  which I guess is the same thing...but what a pain!  I do have all my folders under one master folder (Master folder is the year, sub folders are the days I've shot and where) I suppose I could just sync the whole "2009" folder but I'd lose all of my lightroom goodies like that I think.

  • I have a fillable form that's already been made. I need to edit fields by moving them and I need to add new fields. How do I do that?

I have a form that was made by someone else. I need to move fields and add new fields in the same box. How do I do that?

If the form was created in Acrobat and you have Acrobat, you should be able to edit the fields by selecting: Tools > Forms > Edit
This is for Acrobat 11. If the PDF has security restrictions that prevent editing or was created with LiveCycle Designer, you won't be able to edit it in Acrobat. If security was applied, you'll need to know the password in order to remove it to allow editing.
