Moving Hyper-V VM to another disk

Hi all, I have read several forums about moving the Hyper-V VM to another disk but I still don't understand on the replication side. I have two physical server running Hyper-V and it's HA between each other with all VM running replication. I have install
a new disk on both plysical machine and both need to move all the VM to the new disk.
Please let me know if my steps are correct.
In this scenario, I have 2 hour downtime so I could power off all VMs:
1) Pause all replication for all VMs.
2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.
3) Copy it to the new disk.
4) Import the VMs from the new location.
5) Power off the VMs on the active server
6) Export the VMs.
7) Copy it to the new disk location
8) Export the VMs from the new location
9) Power up the VMs and start the replication
10) Delete the old vhd on the old location
Qns 1: Will the replication know the new location on the other server or as long the VM on both server are on the exact location so it will automatically replicate over ?
In another scenario let's say I don't have any downtime and just for my knowledge:
1) Pause all replication for all VMs.
2) Export the replicated powered-off VMs on the inactive server.
3) Copy it to the new disk.
4) Import the VMs from the new location.
5) Failover the VMs to the inactive server
6) Power off the VMs on the other server
7) Export the VMs.
8) Copy it to the new disk location
9) Export the VMs from the new location
10) Power up the VMs
11) Failover the VMs
12) Delete the old vhd files at the old location
Qns 2: Will the failover work in this case after I have change the location of the other server ?

1) What Operating System are you running on the HyperV Server?
Win 2012
2) You are talking about HA, but I would assume that you don't have a cluster here. Right?
Yes no cluster here. HA means if one of my Hyper-V is down, the other VMs on the other Hyper-V would take over
3) You are talking about Replication, but I would assume that you don't mean HyperV Replica. Right?
But If you have HyperV Replica running you don't have to export / delete / copy / import /etc. your VMs. This is all done by HyperV replica...
I don't understand this part. You mean Hyper-V Replica could help me to move the vmhd to another disk ?

  • Moving Ircat and Irdata to another disk

    Hi,
I tried to move the catalog of my 250'000 pictures (lightroom 4.1 - Win7) to another Disk than C:/ (which is quite full) but in the catalog preferencies, it is only possible to view the path ant the location of this catalog. As I manually tried to move the all the "Lightroom" folder (including .Irdata Previews and .Ircat files) I had a blank Lightroom at the next start up. I think that the link was therefore broken. How can I have the catalog on a more capacitive HD than in the default C:/ ?
    Thanks
    Remy

Move the catalog file and associated subfolders/files in your operating system, and then in your operating system double-click on the catalog file
You only have to do that double-click once, and thereafter you can double-click the regular Lightroom icon

  • Moving time machine backups to another disk

I'm trying to move my time machine backups one external drive to another.  I'm getting an error that says "The backup can’t be copied because the backup volume doesn’t have ownership enabled."
I was told I had to check off Ignore Permissions for this disk but I have no idea where to do that. it is not in GET INFO. I am using Snow Leopard.
Any ideas how I can copy the time machine files from one disk to another?
    Thanks.

I recommend doing as I suggested. Cloning is the only correct way to backup a Time Machine backup drive. If you have data on the other drive you don't wish to lose then create a new partition on that drive. See the following:
To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Open Disk Utility and select the drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list.
    2. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.

  • How do I move my home directory to another disk?

I want to find out the "standard procedure" for moving my home directory to another disk.  My current system disk is getting quite full, so I have purchased additional storage.  The issues I am concerned about are the following:
    Preserving the file permissions
I have used rsync and ditto commands to copy the file.  Does rsync preserve the permissions like the ditto command?
Updating the System to use the new home directory
I have used the Ctl-Click on the accounts control panel to update the location of the home directories.  Do applications use "~<username>" or /Users/<username> to find the home directory of the user (obviously this is limited to Apple Controlled software).
Understanding the /Users and /home directories
Since Apple is no longer using netinfo, I wanted to get a better understanding how these directories are set up.  Is the /home directory exclusively for network mounted home directories.
Please let me know if you have any questions.

I disagree with Linc Davis on whether to move the home folder, But I think you are going about it the wrong way.
Having a Boot drive with only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix directories including Paging/Swap on it is one of the best ways to speed up routine disk Access for all your other files. The system keeps "snacking" away loading and reloading bits and pieces of System and Applications as you work, and that System activity slows "regular" disk access way down by moving the drive heads away from the files you are processing.
Giving System files their own drive speeds up everything.
Here are two good recipes and discussions about how and why to do this, and how to make it happen without a single line of Terminal code:

  • Moving iMovie projects to another disk

On my desktop, a warning box appeared telling me that the start-up disc is almost full.
Disk Utility confirms that on the 560 GB capacity disk, there is only 1 GB space available.
In iMovie on that same disk, there are several dozen movie projects.
I would like to move most of these projects to another disk in the MacPro (there are three other disks), but still want to work on the iMovie projects on the start-up disk.
Is there a way of storing the files on another disk, and still working on the projects on the start-up disk?
    Thank you in advance, Isshi.

You can store Projects and/or Events on an external or secondary disk. The disk must be formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

  • How to move Tablespace from One disk group to another disk group in RAC

    Hi All,
I have 11gR2 RAC env on Linux.
As ofnow I have problem with disk group. I have 3 disk group which is almost full - 98%. I have added one NEW disk group and want to move some of the Tablespace(TBS) from OLD disk group to NEW diskgroup and make some free space in OLD disk group.
Can any one suggest me how to move TBS from one disk group to another disk grup without shutting down the instance.
    DB is in Noarchive mode.
    Thanks...

    Hi Helios,
Thanks for doc id but I am looking for noarchive mode solution. becaues I got ORA-

Hence I am trying something and findout below steps but not sure how useful it is:
    1- put tablespace offine
2- Copy the file to new diskgroup using Either RMAN or DBMS_FILE_TRANSFER.
3- Rename the file to point to new location.
    4- Recover the file.
    5- Bring the file online.
I had move 240M TBS from OLE to NEW.
These steps run successfully so I think this is valid for noarchive mode.Hence want to confirm..so inform me please.
Thanks :)I have doubt in my mind:
    1. You database is in noarchivelog mode
    2. You're taking tablespace offline
    3. Suppose you're moving a file of size 10GB(or any larger filesize) to another disk group
    4. Now after moving the file, you're trying to bring the tablespace online............NOW
tablespace will need recovery. if the required data is inside the SGA then it is ok. But if the data has been flushed, then?
if step 2 and 3 has taken significant time, then most probably you'll not be able to bring that tablespace online.

  • Hyper-V convert to direct disk

My 2012 R2 Server is running on 5 RAID6 HDDs + 1 spare (WD REDs). It's used as a storage server, with two Windows 8.1 Pro Hyper-V clients. The problem is that the disk access in general is kind of slow.
So my idea is to move the windows to RAID1 SSD, and move both Hyper-V clients to another RAID1 SSD, and keep RAID6 HDDs just for users files storage.
Both Hyper-V setup as dynamic disk files. Is there a way to convert them and run them as direct disk access from SSD divided into two partitions?
Thanks so much for any help.

    Hi!
A vhd file can not be converted into actual physical storage using Hyper-V tools. Neither does Hyper-V use physical partitions, but rather the entire disk if you wan't your VMs to access physical storage directly.
You need to bring your SSD disks offline in the Hyper-V host disk manager, so that Hyper-V can present the disks to virtual Machines. This is called a "pass-through" disk.
Then you need to migrate the contents from the vhd file on to the physical disk used in the VM. You can attach a vhd in the hosts disk manager, or mount both disks to the VM and clone the contents from the vhd on to the pass-through disk using an imaging
    software such as Ghost.

  • Recording to another disk?

I'm moving from ProTools Free (OS 9) to GarageBand, and have a question.
What is the correct proceedure to get garageband to use another disk or partition to store audio files?
At present I'm doing a Save-As, and saving the song file to another disk, then using that icon to open the song.
    David

Because usually your system disk is busy running the shop. You can get away with it for a while if your projects are small, but after a while, things will start to slow down, and audio may not always have top priority over system functions. Result - gliches. If you are a privateer, maybe no problem, but if you are doing it for a living, it would be almost suicidal.
Most professionals have been using a MacPro with several internal disks, system, audio, and maybe a couple of sample library disks. Lately with the advent of Thunderbolt, external disks are stating to be a more reasonable option, which has been bringing the iMacs and laptops more into play.Firewire is OK, but if you are running dozens of tracks with lots going on, as well as a firewire interface, things can start to bottle neck.
if you have the option of only one internal drive, make sure your extermal audio drive is AT LEAST firewire 400. 800 is much better, and eSATA or Thunderbolt is as good as an internal drive. USB2 is not a feasible option for external audio, unless you are only talking about half a dozen tracks, and you don't mind a bit of skittishness.
    Hope this helps.

  • Lion Update with Home folder on another disk

Currently with Snow Leopard I have my home directory on another disk.  If I update to Lion, will I have problems?  Or will it just work.  Or will I have to redo the moving of the home folder?

Should work. Do retain a bootable backup/clone or Time Machine backup of your current Snow Leopard installation to ensure you can work if the upgrade goes awry.

    Hellow everyone,
I have just moved from one PC to another.  They are windows pc's not macintosh.  When i installed itunes on the new computer it stated that I already had 5 devices authrorized for this account.  I did a little reading and went in and deathorized all 5 PC from the account as I am sure it was a couple pcs ago and a few iphones.   When I try and go in and authorize an account I cant see anywhere where there is a prompt to authorize the new PC.  I go into store and all it says is that there are no devices associated to this account.  What I would like to do is associate my new PC and my iphone to this account and hopefully restore from the cloud all of my music and programs.
Any idea what I am doing wrong here or how I can resolve this. Thanks in advance.
    Respectully.

if it's music then drm is not used there any more and drm can be removed from previously bought drm material without cost

Unless you can set the Time Capsule's drive to have it's ownership ignored
you won't be able to use the library on the same volume as the Time Machine backups.

  • Is moving all active ports to another VSAN disruptive?..

Hi! I moved all active ports to another VSAN and this caused a server to failure. I know that this can be because of the small time-out values at the operating system or bad multipathing, but how large a time-out can be in a such reconfiguration?.. What if the server can't survive any storage loss and we move server and storage array ports to another VSAN? I wonder if it can be done without any traffic interruption...

    Hi Artem,
Changing server from VSAN is a disruptive process for each path you're acting on: that means if you're not having dual fabrics and proper multipathing configuration, the server will lose access to its LUN for a certain amount of time. Depending on the operating system you might expect various behaviors (kernel panic, SCSI errors, CPU in I/O wait until timeouts,...). Consider it even more restrictive when booting on SAN or when swap memory is also on a SAN LUN.
It's always good practice to work one one fabric at a time by disabling the path attached to it from the OS perspective (if multipath software is not set in a failover mode).
Changing VSAN membership for a FC port on the MDS9000 means that the initiator HBA has to log (FLOGI) into a new VSAN where the DomainID is different from previous VSAN, so its FCID will change also. It is same effect as moving fibers to another physical SAN from the host perspective.

  • Moving file structure to a new disk

I am trying to move my catalog and photo files from one disk that is running out of space to another drive. I have tried all the obvious like backing up and restoring to another disk which created the catalog file as well as the file structure but when I open the new catalog it still points to the old file structure. I am using Elements 3.0.
Any Ideas? It is important for me to maintain the original folder structure since I think some filenames are the same. Also it is important for me to maintain all my tagging inof.

Are you sure you opened the new catalog?
What happens if you just move all the folders to the new disk in Windows, and then change the drive letter so that (for example) if the old drive was D:, then the new drive becomes D: ??

  • How do I do this:  "This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk?"

"This disk needs to be repaired. Start up your computer with another disk (such as your Mac OS X installation disc), and then use Disk Utility to repair this disk."

Stick the disk in, reboot holding c.
Disk Utility is a menu option about the 2 or 3rd screen in the installer. (don't install OS X!)
Because your booted form the installer disk, you can repair the disk.
Quit and exit the installer and reboot.
If your drive is not repaired, make a note of all what it says, for Apple to use.
Reboot and get your files off to a external drive,
Take the note and your comptuer to Apple for a warranty/Apple care call, they will replace the drive.
