Moving iMac G3 Panther to G4 Tiger

I'm donating my current G4 iMac (running latest version of Tiger) to my mom, who has an old Graphite G3 iMac.
What is the easiest way to basically wipe the G4 and then bring over her user i.d, network settings, passwords, safari bookmarks, email, photos, etc? (Have to admit - i've never erased a hard drive - and i wanted to make sure i didn't leave any adminstrative junk that might trip my mom up down the road.)
Also didn't really want to mess with Migration Assistant since we are going from Panther to Tiger....
Thanks for any help!

Migration Assistant will not bring Panther specific files over to Tiger. In many cases it will translate a setting to the Tiger equivalent. Naturally, when asking a computer to think you will get some errors but the worst is you would just need to redo some settings in some apps, maybe.
It is by far the easiest way to transfer everything over.
When you wipe the hard drive use Zero Data to make sure it's all gone and the hard drive is good. Takes an hour or two, depending on the size of the drive.

  • IMac running Panther sharing an external HD with new MacBook

    Hello,
I would like help setting up an external hard drive to automatically backup from both a G4 iMac running Panther and a new MacBook running 10.4.9.
What would be the easiest/most reliable method of doing this?
    Thanks in advance

I use FW drives on most of my Networks and use Tri-Backup...
    http://www.tri-edre.com/english/index.html
Can't say enough good about Tri-Backup.
    With Sharepoints...
    http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/
Which can backup any CPU to any Drive in the Network, to/from any other CPU/Drive.
Tri-Backup isn't Universal, don't even know if it runs on IntelMacs, but regardless, you could still back up the Book from the G4. It can even be set to do the backup once the book joins the network.

  • Moved iMac to different room; can't send e-mail!

I moved iMac to a different room and am picking up a different wireless signal with airport card. my internet connection is strong, i can receive e-mail messages with both Mail and Thunderbird, but i can't send them! it says there is an error and i should check the address. what should i do?
    thanks,
    R

You're picking up a different wireless signal? Hmm...
Hard to say for sure without more details about your network and your ISP. But it doesn't sound like an email reader problem. It sounds more like a network issue since you seem to be saying you changed networks.
If it's not your signal, then it's somebody else's internet connection, and that might be with a different ISP (internet service provider). Without the proper settings for sending email with that ISP, your email won't go through. This is to deter unprivileged people from abusing the email servers to send spam, and to prevent the privileged user of the internet connection from being blamed for someone else's actions.
If this is the case, simply select the other wireless signal with your own internet connection and your email should work fine again. Not to mention, you won't be disrespecting your neighbor and their ISP anymore.
If you need to boost the signal of your own wireless network, you can check the settings of your wireless router and see if you can boost the power output or reduce the speed. Most of the time reducing the speed isn't noticeable since wireless routers are potentially 6 to 20 times faster than broadband internet connections. You might be broadcasting at a higher rate than is possible for you to use, and hence reducing your range.

  • Kernel Panics -- Panther vs. Tiger

    Here's the scenario:
Souped up G4 Sawtooth w/ 1.2 Ghz processor, 640 MB memory, 2 internal HDs, running both Panther and Tiger off of different partitions on the main drive. I haven't made any hardware changes in a couple of years. The machine had been running with no problems for a very long time.
This week, I get a kernel panic (Your mac needs to be restarted ... etc.) while backing up the 2nd drive to an external HD. I restart the machine, but still get the same message.
Reboot from external HD w/ Tiger -- same problem. Try to boot from any of several CD/DVDs: varying results. Drive Genius and Disk Warrior get the same kernel panic error. Tiger DVD lets me get to the initial setup screen, but won't go any further. I can run system profiler, but not Disk Utility or Startup Disk, nor can I install Tiger. I get the hint that it's a hardware problem, but can't figure out where.
It appears I need some help, so I read a few forums. Someone says zap the PRAM, so I zap the PRAM. The machine reboots -- into the Panther partition. Everything seems to be working fine in Panther.
I try again in Tiger -- nothing. CD -- nothing. DVD -- nothing. Still, Panther works fine; accesses both drives, everything is in working order. Now I'm confused. How can this machine work fine in Panther, but not boot in Tiger? It's almost a lock to be a hardware issue, since I can't boot to Tiger from any device, but Panther works.
Finally, I open up the case and disconnect the 2nd drive. Now, all of a sudden, Tiger works like a charm.
My question is: Why would Panther work when Tiger wouldn't??? Is there some feature in Tiger that diagnoses HD problems Panther misses??
I'm scratching my head on this one and would appreciate any insight.

What is different about the two OSes running is their memory footprint and paging use -- but the Install CDs run mostly on Darwin, not much of "real" Mac OS X is running when you do the Install or run the Utilities.
We think of those Install CDs as incorruptible "known good" software sources. If they won't run, there are some hardware problems. I would be most suspicious of RAM problems.
If you have multiple RAM modules, shift each module down one slot and bring the end one around to the beginning, in a deterministic, repeatable way. If that changes the symptoms, you may be on the trail of something.

  • Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Just got girlfriend a new iPad2. Her iMac is a PowerPC G5 (Tiger version 10.4.11) with 512 mb RAM. What's the simplest, most efficient way to get her iPad2 up and running and synced to her Mac?

Most of the Apple store sales people and some of the genius bar people are only knowledgable on Apple's more recent offerings. They are not very knowledgable, I found, on older PowerPC based Apple computers, I'm afraid.
    Here's the real scoop.
Your girlfriend's G5 can only install up to OS X 10.5 Leopard. This is the last compatible OS X version for PowerPC users.
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard and OS X10.7 Lion are for newer Intel CPU Apple computers.
Early iMac G5's can only have up to 2 GBs of RAM.
Later iMac G5's (2005-2006) could take up to 2.5 GBs of RAM
2 GBs of RAM will run OS X 10.5 Leopard just fine.
The very latest iTunes (10.5.2) can be installed and runs on both PowerPC and Intel CPU Macs.
However, there are certain new iTunes feature that won't work without an Intel Mac.
One of iOS and iTunes feature is sync'g wirelessly over WiFi.
This will not work unless you have an iDevice running iOS 5 and Intel Mac running 10.6 Snow Leopard or better.
Although, I was disappointed I would not be able to do this with my G4 Mac, it's not a biggie problem for me.
So, your girlfriend's computer should be fine for what she intends to use it for.
The Apple people either just plain didn't know or we're trying to get you to think about buying a new Mac.
At least, as of now, not truly necessary.
If Apple, at some later point, drops support for PowerPC users running 10.5, then would be the time to consider a new or "newer" Intel CPU Mac.
My planned Mac computer upgrade is seeking out a " newer" last version G5 for my "new" Mac.
I can't afford, right now, to replace all of my core PowerPC software with Intel versions, so I need to stick with the older PowerPC Macs for the time being. The last of the G5's is what I seek.

  • Moving iCal from panther to tiger

when i drag and drop the iCal folder from my old hard drive >users>the user>library>application support, to the same location on my new hard drive that has tiger installed, and then open iCal none of my calander data shows up? plus i think it wiped out the old data even though it was on an seperate hard drive. is that possible? how do i import my old data?

    You're right
In that case, iCal 2 stores calendars in a different location (~Library/Application Support/iCal) than iCal version 1.x.x.
So, assuming you have your old calendars still, the easiest thing to do is to simply import them (File/Import)
I doubt iCal "wiped out" the old data.
Can I assume you are moving data from a Mac with Panther to another Mac with Tiger (vs upgrading a single Mac)?

  • Upgraded iMac from Panther to Tiger - Won't boot!

    Hello,

    Hello,
The PowerMac should be providing the donor drive (and the iMac's processor doing the work) when you do an install like this. You've probably ended up with a PowerMac customized version of Tiger on the iMac which won't work.
The other possibility is that the Intel version of the Tiger update was used which is also incompatible.
I'd advise trying the process again and make sure the PowerPC update is used:

  • Upgrade Panther eMac to Tiger or Leopard?

    Hello,
Well its tax time and I just found out my 2008 tax software (H&R Block's Tax Cut) is no longer compatible with 10.3.9. For this reason and others (iTunes 8, etc.), I find myself thinking about upgrading my eMac. It's a 1GHz G4 with 640 MByte of RAM (512 + 128) and a 40 GByte Internal Hard Drive. There's also a 250 GByte Firewire drive that I use for backups. Since both Tiger and Leopard are both still available, which one would be appropriate for my eMac? Note if it wasn't for the lack of support for 10.3.9, I would be perfectly happy staying with Panther. The point being that I'm not looking for any new features. Also I noticed that allmac.com has eMac specific 10.4 installation DVD's for $49.95. Would this be appropriate for installing on this eMac? Thanks for any information.

    Jazz Man wrote:
Also, any opinion on the eMac 10.4 DVD offered by allmac.com (SFR-6080)?
It's always a gamble, using machine-specific OS X install discs on a Mac that they didn't ship with. But I have had very good luck with the eMac Tiger disc. I got one and installed it on my 1.25GHz eMac (orignally shipped with Panther). I also tried it on an old 500MHz iMac DV, and it worked too. So I'd say the chances of it working on your 1GHz eMac are pretty good. But YMMV, of course, so don't take my post as gospel!

  • Panther upgrade to Tiger & Hardware Check

I have the install disks for Tiger and want to upgrade an old eMac G4 (my daughters machine) from Panther. I need a little orientation about how to go about this without screwing up the rest of the computer and its files. Is this easily done? Its been so long since I have messed with Panther I wasn't sure what was require.
Also I got a hardware test disk with a mac Mini the same year we bought that emac. Would the ahrdware test work with the e Mac? We are having trouble with the airport card.

No, your AHT disc for the Mini will not work with the eMac. Different hardware. An AHT disc did come with the eMac, and that's the one you would use to test the hardware.
    Here's what you should do:
    1. Repair the hard drive and permissions:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Panther Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Make a bootable backup of your Panther system. For this you will need an external FireWire drive large enough for the amount of occupied space on the eMac's internal drive plus a few GBs to spare.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
    1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
    2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
    3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
    4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
    5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
    6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
    7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means the external drive.
Source means the eMac's internal drive.
    3. Test the clone to be sure it will boot the eMac. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the icon for the external drive then click the large right arrow button (you will have to wait a bit until the busy cursor returns to a normal cursor before you can select the external drive's icon.)
    4. Assuming all went well you can then proceed to install Tiger using the Archive and Install option. Read the following carefully before proceeding:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.

  • IMac G3 Panther, Why do I have three hard drives on my desk top and how do I combine them into one?

    Trying to get an old iMac up to be enough for my four year old to go on the internet.  Upgraded to panther and put an airport card in.  Now problems;
    1.  It can connect to my airport express, but not if I have the password enabled, then it won't, even if I put the password in.
    2.  There are 3 hard drives showing on the desk top, with the space divided between them.
    3.  I've been trying to download an old version of flash, but it never finishes and says it can't write the file or something like that.  I kind of think it has to do with the file being to large and since the hard drive is divided, it won't fit.
Let me know if anybody can help and thank you for your time....

Your old iMac can only connect to a WEP network, and yours is probably WPA.  As far as the partitions are concerned, if you don't need any any of the data on it, use your Panther disc and erase and fomat it as one partition.

  • Can't connect iMac/Leopard with Mac Mini/Tiger and vice versa

This one has got me tearing my hair out.
I have an Intel iMac running Leopard and a Mac Mini running Tiger on the same Ethernet network. Both run (adjacent) fixed IP addresses with common subnet mask and gateway. Both access the Internet fine through a single router. But can I share files between the two?
Neither has firewall turned on while file sharing is enabled. I can see each Mac from the other but when I try connecting first I get 'The server may not exist or is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again.' Then on clicking OK I get 'This file server is running on your machine. Please access the volumes and files locally.'
If I try connecting from Finder using Go - Connect To Server I get this error message 'The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in "afp://MacMininame" could not be read or written.'
Although I'm running Leopard on the iMac now, this also used to happen when I ran Tiger too.
    Many thanks - GeoffT.

    Fixed it!
I have Parallels installed on the iMac and it creates two virtual network adapters (Guest-Host and NAT) in System Preferences/Network. For some reason I'd foolishly contrived to manually configure the Nat adapter to the same IP address as the Mac Mini, hence the point-back to the iMac every time.
Guess we're all allowed the occasional foul up.....

  • IMac 18" G4 Flat Panel - Tiger 10.4.9 Install Crashing

Newbie to this forum coz I've never had a problem with my iMac since I bought it new all those years ago. I got Final Cut Pro as a gift and needed to upgrade from 10.2.8 as supplied with my iMac to 10.4 according to the FCP instructions, so I duly bought 10.4.9 generic which I am trying to install.
As soon as the machine restarts with the OS install disk 1 in the drive it crashed with a kernel error telling me something about not finding Power PC 6.1?
According the the Apple website this OS should install on this machine. The iMac is an 18" flat panel with 768MB RAM and 60GB of free disk space, Power PC G4 1Ghz.
Since the OS install discs are generic and not specifically for one type of computer in particular, can anyone suggest what may be the root of the problem and how to fix it?
    Look forward.

  • How do I upgrade my imac g4 to OS X Tiger

I have recently been donated a 2003 (800Hz) imac G4, which had never been connected to the internet until now! It is not exactly perfect but after a bit of on line reseach I discovered that I need to buy OS X Tiger installation disks to upgrade.
On ebay etc it seems that I can buy a secondhand CDrom considerably cheaper than the DVD although the mac does have a DVD drive and I understand the CDrom is for earlier versions. Will it make any difference which type I buy?

  • IMac 27" and OS X Tiger, does it work?

    Hello Experts,
    I´m forced to use 10.4.11
    Don´t ask why.
Is it possible for me to move my HD from my 1TB Alu Imac 24" 2.8 to this new mac?
I´m planning to buy the 3.06 C2Duo, so basically the same CPU as I´m using today.
    Are the graphic drivers working?

Although not supported by Apple, some people claim to be running Leopard on the iMac (late 2009) machines but not aware of anyone running Tiger. If you are no longer planning on using your 24" iMac, do you have the option of putting that drive in an enclosure and trying to boot from a Tiger external drive when needed rather than replace the new iMac's internal drive?
