Moving Internal Drives from a G4 to a G5?
I have a G4that I use for audio editing, but it's dying on me, and I want to upgrade to a G5. But from what I've read, the G5 can only use SATA internal drives. My G4 has two large internal drives, one 250GB for my system files, and general document files, and one 400GB for my audio files. I believe they're both internal SCSI drives connected to a 133 PCI card that I installed (without it, the machine could not read "large" drives). If I buy a used G5, will I be able to use those drives in the G5? Or will I need all new drives to put in it?
Oh boy, I love SCSI, but unless that card works in the G5 you're out of luck, but that beeing said I think, (hope), they might be IDE/ATA drives, then you could put them in Firewire cases to use them, but IDE/ATA Firewire cases are drying up fast, here's one...

Moving a drive from a NAS200 Question
Im thinking of moving from a NAS200 to one of the newer models with Gigabit. Can I move the drives from the NAS200 to the newer models without having to reformat?
Jorge
Solved!
Go to Solution.Hi Jorge,
Moving a drive from NAS200 to NMH will reformat the drive because they are using a different file system. You should back-up your data first before moving the drive. Check out this linksys article: KB17899 - Swapping Hard Disk Drives between NAS200 and NMH Series Media Hub.
Hope this helps.
If everyone needs to believe in something, I believe I'll have another beer.. -
Internal drives from my older Macpro keeping my new 8 core from booting
I am upgrading from an older dual core Macpro to a new 8 core and found that if I install any of the internal drives from my older Macpro in the new 8 core the computer won't boot. The drives just have data on them no applications of operating software. The older boot drive won't let the 8 core boot either if its installed.
Anyone know if this is to be expected and if so why? I will have to copy 3 - 1 TB drives if they can't be directly used in the new computer.
ThanksI've seen a severe corrupt directory cause Macs to refuse to boot from any drive, even from CD/DVDs making it hard to repair and requiring a USB/FW case to repair/format or recovery files.
During startup the system has to scan for valid boot drives even though startup disk tells it where to try to boot from.
Also yours by default boots in 64-bit mode.
Once you have the files you need copied over, why not just reformat and clone your current system. -
How to keep an internal drive from being mounted on startup?
Other than opening the box and disconnecting them physically, how do I keep an internal drive from being mounted at startup? I have two problems:
1) despite having an SSD drive marked as the startup drive, I think one of my other drives is being considered first - startup takes a long time and it shows the gray circle with a line through it, before acquiescing into booting (rapidly and nicely) from the SSD drive. How do I make it ignore the other drives and go right for this?
2) when the system boots up, if I don't immediately dismount the internal drives (which I don't need most of the time), Time Machine and Spotlight begin going over them.
other than physically removing them, anything I can do in some OS X boot script to keep those drives from being mounted?Ok, I followed your directions (including de-seleccting and re-selecting the SSD as boot disk from System Preferences). Console: there was nothing under System Diagnostic Reports, but here's what the All Messages logs said after the Boot_Time that demonstrated my issue (3 min wait, then gray circle with a line through it, then finally rapid boot off the SSD). Is there anything here that shows what the heck it's doing before it actually boots off the SSD?

Prevent internal drive from mounting at startup
How do I easily prevent an internal hard drive from mounting at startup?
The machine has two internal drives and I want the upper drive to not mount unless needed. Both are bootable but lower is chosen as the startup drive.
Thanks for any help.
G5 dual 2.5 ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)Take it out and put it in a removable FW + SATA case.
There is little need or reason to have it not mount. If it is backup or emergency drive, external would be preferable... and put internal drive bay to some other use. -
Cloning an internal drive from an external bootable copy
Hope this makes sense...
I work in an edit facility using Avid that's only recommended to use with 10.5.5 and some of our machines run 10.5.8. My thought was to create a bootable external disk image from one of our "good" edit computers and then wipe the hard drive of a 10.5.8 machine, replacing it with the 10.5.5 image. Is this possible or will it muck up the towers I'm replacing with the external disk image? As long as these other computers do not require a later version of OS X, then it's quite possible. The two basic steps are:
1. Repair the hard drive and permissions of the HDD you are going to clone.
2. Clone the drive to the external drive.
3. Boot each target computer from the external drive; Restore the clone from external to internal.
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. Select the language. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select the internal HDD from the sidebar and click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. Click on the Repair Permissions button.
a. Select the External volume from the sidebar.
b. Click on the Restore tab in Disk Utility's main window.
c. Check the box labeled "Erase destination."
d. Select the External volume from the sidebar and drag it to the "Destination" entry field.
e. Select the Internal volume from the sidebar and drag it to the "Source" entry field.
f. Click on the Restore button.
Use the external clone to boot one of the target computers. Repeat the above steps but reverse the "Source" and "Destination" fields. "Source" becomes the External volume and "Destination" becomes the target computer. -
Booting from external, need to stop bad internal drive from trying to mount
I have an Intel iMac with a bad internal drive. It won't mount, but makes several clicks every few seconds trying to access the drive. Eventually I will take it in for repair, but I don't want to be without it for several days and it is working fine with the external drive.
It's not a huge problem, but the clicking gets annoying. Does anyone have suggestions on how I can disable the drive or prevent the computer from trying to access it? I don't want to physically disable it unless it is a simple procedure. I'm hoping there is a software solution via OS X or Terminal commands.
I should say that I found some instructions to prevent a drive from mounting, but it requires the drive's UUID which I can't get unless it mounts. Also, I don't know if this will stop the clicking. Anyway, here are the instructions. Perhaps there is a way to do something similar without knowing the UUID or by knowing the UUID of the working drives? I appreciate any help.
1. Open Disk Utility
2. Select the bad drive, then click the Info button
3. Copy the Universal Unique Identifier (UUID) code
4. Open a Terminal window and type: sudo pico /etc/fstab
5. Enter your password
6. Enter the line below (using your own UUID):
UUID=CDB15826-88A3-36AC-8009-3E71355F0B18 none hfs rw,noauto
(taken from http://www.macseven.com/files/20070719how_to_prevent_a_drive_volume_frommounting.html)I don't know if it can be done using software solution (I think not). It's possible to remove the drive physically but it is rather tricky. see this thread for instructions

Can I use the internal drives from my PPC on a mac pro for storage?
Hi guys, I have a PPC dual G5 2.0 with 2 internal HD serial ATA (both). Im getting a mac pro today (mac pro 2.66 dual intel xenon) and I was wondering if I can use my drives in the new mac to have more space. Im not trying to have both osx 10.4 and 10.6 on the same machine, just storage. Also, do RAM memory will work?
Thanks guys!If you check OWC, www.macsales.com you can get an idea of ram prices and internal hard drive prices for that machine. OWC specializes in Macs and has an outstanding reputation for customer support.
With terra byte drive prices down at $100 or so, it is hard to justify the older, smaller, slower drives...you will just get frustrated -
Moving hard drive from iMac G5 to eMac 700Mhz
Hi,
Hard drive in my eMac failed recently and on the top of that iMac G5 logic board stopped working (known problem). Now I wonder if I could move over iMac's hard drive (and Airport card) with 10.4 on it to my eMac. Is that possible? Or do I have to format it or clone it before move etc? How that can be done and what are my options here?
Thanks in advanceThanks for clarifying on hard drives. I know emac hard drive is failing so I will replace that regardless. I just wonder what will be the best method to do that (I don't want use external drive for it). Regarding iMac G5 logic board; I have never seen that guide of Jim Warholic and I am appreciated for it. I have checked logic board but I am not sure if there is a problem with any of capacitors. What I have found is one of them look a bit bulge in compare to others; see pics here:

Mac Pro 2.66 internal drives in a Mac Pro 64bit i7?
Is it possible to just unmount my internal drives from my workhorse Mac Pro 2.66 Dual Core Intel Xeon tower and mount in my new 8C Xeon 2X2.4g 64bit tower?
Thanks in advance!Director wrote:

Thanks in advance!
It's not clear if your workhorse is an original, or at least early Mac Pro and you new Mac Pro is the 2010 version, but if so, be aware that the drive sleds the internal drives are in are not the same. I don't know what would happen if you tried that swap but I doubt it'd be good for the new Mac Pro.
The drive itself could be transferred from the old sled to the new sled and it would fit but, if the new Mac Pro is, indeed, a 2010, it won't boot because 10.6.4 is the minimum OS needed. You could, however, use it for Setup Assistant or Migration Assistant purposes. -
Can I install internal HD from PowerMac G4 in my Mac Pro?
I have an old, Quicksilver PowerMac G4. After purchasing a Mac Pro, I want to use the internal storage from the old one as a backup system for the new one. Can I physically install the my 3 internal drives from the G4 into the 3 open slots on my Mac Pro? I know nothing about how the architecture of internal drives have changed since I bought them in 2004 (I'm assuming a LOT). I'd rather not keep the G4 sitting in my office, taking up space, and I thought this might be the best way to go about utilizing that HD space (I have about 280GB).
the first SATA were just a PATA with Marvel bridge slapped on and were not native SATA.
Perpendicular came later.
So it went from 60 to 75 and then to 105MB/sec and now outstrips even that.
15K SCSI went from 60 to 75 to 90 (the Maxtor Atlas 15K II was a nice little drive that gave the Cheetah a run for it).
As Maxtor was improving and Seagate was having terrible drive firmware issues it was however too late for Maxtor that had lost market confidence.
The "deathstar" was due to use of non-Lucent DSP but there too even though later models were fine and the 180 GXPs were golden, IBM first shed PC business and then IBM Hitachi business.
I never cared for Seagate beyond their Cheetah line, switched to Maxtor and while never had great luck with IBM Ultrastar SCSI their PATA and SATA were fine by me. And avoided the 75GXP Deathstars.
Yes a lot of change but I would go so far and to simplify as just the switch to SATA is all. -
Format extra internal drive in maverick
Hi everyone,
I have been running Maverick now for a couple of months, I have my system files on the drives the machines came with, i have work files on a 2TB drive which i have installed as an extra drive. This drive was already running on the computer before i upgraded to Maverick.
We had a power cut and my UPS did not start unfortunately. Now i cannot acces my internal drive from my mac, however i can see the drive from another computer on my network. I have been able to back up all the work over the network, i now want to format the drive on my mac but disk utility does not support the instruction, does not unmount the drive for format.
Any suggestions on what i need to do to fix this?
Kind regardsPut the drive in external HDD case and connect it to Mac Pro or other Computer and see if it's mounted.

I am moving from PC to Mac. My PC has two internal drives and I have a 3Tb external. What is best way to move the data from the internal drives to Mac and the best way to make the external drive read write without losing data
Paragon even has non-destriuctive conversion utility if you do want to change drive.
Hard to imagine using 3TB that isn't NTFS. Mac uses GPT for default partition type as well as HFS+

I'm moving an internal hard drive from an old computer to a new computer. (My new compute runs Windows 8.1) How do I transfer the catalog data to my new computer so the Organizer of Photoshop Elements 6 will find the data on the hard that has been moved to the new computer? Is this possible or do I have to use the procedure of copying the catalog along with the photos to a back up hard drive and then restore them on the new computer?
The 'normal' procedure is to do a PSE organizer backup (not a copy or a backup from external tools) to an external drive, then a restore to the new location.
The advantage is that you have a backup of both catalog and media files and you don't have all disconnected files, which would happen with external backup tools. Also, if you restore with a more recent elements version, the catalog will be automatically updated to the new format.
The drawback in your situation is that you'll have either to overwrite all your files or restore to a custom location, creating a duplicate photo library (which supposes you have enough free space).
It would be possible to simply use the organizer in the old PC to move the catalog to a new 'custom' folder just under your C: root drive. The catalog would be accessible once the drive will be installed in the new PC. Then you would have all files 'disconnected' due to the fact that all your media files are now on a drive with a different letter. Reconnecting a whole library is a hard job with PSE6, less so with PSE11/PSE12.
If the idea of fiddling with the sqlite database with external sqlite manager tools is ok for you, I can describe the process more in detail. You only copy your catalog folder (as suggested above) to another location. Instead of trying the 'reconnection' way, you install the sqlite utility on the new computer. When the old drive is installed in the new computer, you simply edit a given record in the catalog database, catalog.psedb, and start the organizer with your copied catalog by simply double clicking the 'catalog.psedb' file.
Even if the last solution is much, much quicker, I would still create a new PSE backup : you have never too much safety . -
Capturing dv from camcorder on powerbook internal drive then moving to exte
I plan on installing FCE HD in an OS 10.4.6 Sandbox partition on my 667MHz Powerbook G4 Ti DVI w/ a 60 GB 7200 rpm HD w/ a 13GB Scratch partition.
Since the PB has a single Firewire port, can I capture video from my camera through that FW port to the internal drive Scratch partition and then transfer that file (or files: I have a bunch of footage) to an external FW drive for further work, again using the single FW port for the initial transfer and then editing, etc.? Can I use USB 2.0 for the transfers after capture?
Any special considerations in doing this? Things I haven’t thought of? :–)
Powerbook G4 Ti DVI 667 MHz Mac OS X (10.4.6) 60 GB 7200 rpm internal HD, 1 GB ram, Dell 24" monitorA Sandbox partition is one generated by SuperDuper! to allow an independent, second OS on a drive. Mine has been working fine and allows me to run new software, including OS updates without affecting the Main partition with it's 'master' set of 'original' applications (the Sandbox uses aliases of the apps on Main). If the new OS or app works, then it can be installed on the Main partition with less danger of unexpected problems. By running from the Sandbox, corruption of the Main partition is less likely.
Why is a scratch partition on the internal drive 'not really a good plan'? Is your caveat for real time capture only, as here or with audio capture, where the disk may be given other, higher priority, tasks by the OS, dropping frames? Hadn't thought of that. The Scratch volume appears to work fine for Photoshop, etc. And I would think it would for post-capture editing in FCE.
'You can daisy chain the camera through the FW drive to the computer. This works with most cameras'. Perhaps I am crying before I am bitten. I have seen posts elsewhere (places I can't recover now!) that recommend using 2 separate FW busses (i.e., adding a FW cardbus to my PB) for the camcorder and the capturing disk, saying that chaining the 2 is likely to cause dropped frames. (My camcorder is an original Optura so it may not play anyway. But that is something else again.)
'USB is not supported by Apple for use with video applications'. Does this include USB 2.0? And I have not seen eSATA mentioned anywhere. ???
