Moving iPhoto from internal hard drive to external hard drive

My computer is almost full, so bought a new external hard drive to move my iPhoto to.  Here is the problem.
I followed the directions on quitting iPhoto and by going into the Pictures folder, I copied to the external hard drive.  That worked just fine.
I tested the pictures and videos on the external and work.  Same events, amount of pictures, movies, etc.
So I went into my internal iPhoto and deleted one event (not an important one thankfully).  I then went into my external hard drive and opened up iPhoto.  The event was also deleted there.  Why?
I only have one library for the photos.  I also have version 8.1.2.
How can I delete the photos on my internal to free up space on my computer, but have it not affect the photo library on the external hard drive?  The only reason I purchased an external hard drive was to move my photos from my internal and free up much needed space.
Did I do something wrong, or miss a step?  If somebody can help me in "very easy" instructions on how to fix this problem, I would greatly appreciate it!  I am not a computer whiz, so need the instructions given to me very simply.
Thank you!

This is really quite simple.
There are two possibilities here only:
1. You keep opening the same Library.
or
2. You failed to make a copy at all.
Stop doing this:
I am opening both by double clicking on my internal or my external
Do this instead:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You will see two Libraries Listed.
If you don't then you didn't copy it properly.
If you do, then select the internal Library. Make a deletion.
Then repeat:
Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
This time select the external. Is the change reflected there?

  • Moving Iphoto and Go Pro videos to external hard drive to free up memory on my MAC

    Hi,
My Mac memory is nearly full, mostly from Go Pro Videos and photos, I have dragged my iphoto library to my 1TB external hard drive but when I go to delete from my iphoto library it also deletes from the iphoto on the external hard drive? I am looking to keep Iphoto and Go Pro vids on my external to free up space on the MAC, but want to access and edit them as normal when the external hard drive is plugged in?
    Many thanks

    Hi klatham15,
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you want to move your iPhoto Library to your external hard drive so you can remove it from your internal drive and free up internal hard drive space.
Please make sure you have followed the steps in this article and "re-linked" iPhoto to the new location.

Of course when it is properly pointing to the external hard drive, deleting content from iPhoto will delete it from the external drive.
    Take care,

How is your external drive formatted? Use Disk Utility to check the volume format. If it is NTFS, you will need to reformat the HDD as exFAT in order to retain universal compatibility (RW to it on both Mac and Windows).

  • If I move the oldest 2/3 of my iPhoto library to an external hard drive, will I still be able to access those older photos? I assume that I will be able to select the source (internal hard drive or external hard drive)?

Yes, if you have a second library.
Here's one way to do what you want:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
Now you have two full versions of the Library.
    3. On the Internal library, trash the Events you don't want there
Now you have a full copy of the Library on the External and a smaller subset on the Internal
    Some Notes:
As a general rule: when deleting photos do them in batches of about 100 at a time. iPhoto can baulk at trashing large numbers at one go.
You can choose which Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
You can keep the Library on the external updated with new imports using iPhoto Library Manager

  • I moved files off my computer to an external hard drive now time machine won't back up like it used to.  It says there is not enough room.

My hard drive was completely full (mostly with pictures) so I moved several years worth of photos from the hard drive to an external hard drive I regularly use with the laptop. (Basically my master copies of all my photos back to 1997)  I have always had Time Machine set up to back up both the laptop AND that external drive.  It's always worked seamlessly until I moved those files.  Time Machine has been full for a while now and regularly gives me a message that the oldest files will be deleted.  That's fine.
I don't understand why moving files from the laptop to the external hd would now cause the following message (not an exact quote): Time Capsule cannot complete backup.  You need 233 gb to backup and time capsule only has 107 gb available. If time capsule was already set to backup up both the laptop and the external hd, why would moving those photos from one hd to the other cause a space issue?  It should equal out.   And now when I look at the files on the time capsule, it only shows me a recent backup and a partial incomplete backup.  None of the older backups are visible anymore. I have not deleted anything directly from the time capsule so I'm thinking somehow the index got damaged.  How can I fix this?  The error message says to change the settings but I really don't know what settings to change.  Help!!

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • How do I copy an iPhoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive?

I'm running out of space on my external hard drive, so I was advised to buy one with triple the amount of space.  So, I need to copy my current iphoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive.  I thought I could just drag and drop it in, but that doesn't seem to be working.

Make sure the external drive is formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and then drag the iPhoto Library to that drive using the Finder.
Then double click the library in its new location to open it in iPhoto. Test it thoroughly, if it is working, before deleting the original library on the internal drive.
To check the format of the drive, see (it says Aperture, but the same applies to iPhoto):  Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture

  • How do it import from my camera to an external hard drive?

I am working on a Mac and have a new Nikon D7100. I am fairly new to Lightroom and am using Lightroom 5. I am having problems importing photos from the camera to an external hard drive. I am able to import directly to my internal hard drive but when I try to import to the external one I receive an error stating, "The following files were not imported because they could not be read. (44)" and then a list of all the images I am trying to import. I have checked my external drive and there does not seem to be any issues with it. Any experience you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks DJ! I didn't know this could be an issue but I see now my external drive is read only on my Mac.

  • Downloading files from PC to Mac via external hard drive

I have already downloaded the files from my PC to an external hard drive. I have connected that external hard drive to my iMac and am attempting to bring those files onto my iMac, but don't know how. Can anyone help? I have it connected, but it seems to be showing up at my Time Machine Backup and I can locate any of the files from my PC.

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
here are several ways to migrate your PC files http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2518
but it seems to be showing up at my Time Machine Backup and I can locate any of the files from my PC
I am not sure if I understand that one correctly.
Does your external harddisk comes up as a Time Machine backup in OSX ?
Or is Time Machine asking if you want to use that external harddisk for backup ?
    Regards
    Stefan

  • HT1751 when i have moved all of my data to an external hard drive should i delete all of the library files on my laptop/PC

i have moved all of my data to an external hard drive should i then delete the copies on my laptop

What are you actually trying to accomplish? Backing up the library, or moving it?
If backing up don't delete anything.
If moving did you move the library files as well? Ideally you would copy the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive then shift-start iTunes to connect to the relocated library. This method makes it easier to move the library to a new drive or computer later and keeps everything together for backing up. Rather than delete everything rename the iTunes or iTunes Media folder first (depending on which approach you took) and make sure the library still works before deleting.

  • I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive. What kind of hard drive do I purchase.  There is not a lot of data to be transferred.

I have an old Mac Tower.  I need to move data from the unit to an external hard drive.  What kind of of hard drive must I purchase so that it works with the Tower?  There is not a lot to transfer.

    MG,
What we might need to do is to change the question.  What computer do you plan to use the data on in the future?  For example, if you have a newer tower, just move the hard drive to the new tower.  If you want to use the data, what about an ethernet LAN to get the data over?  If you want to archive the data, how do you store the second drive?  What are your plans for the first drive?  If the new software will not recognize the old file type, the data must be exported.  Just getting files to another hard drive will not finish your journey.
As Allan said, knowing the exact model and year of your tower is important.  My suggestion is to find a user group near you.  Please post back with more information, including the name of a large city near you.
For example, our user group just experimented with a 1983 Apple IIc that predates the Mac.  It started right up, read files from 1984  and saved them from a 5.25" floppy to a 3.5" floppy.  That 3.5 floppy will go into a platinum G3 which will read PRODOS files using Apple File Exchange.  That G3, with a USB card, will allow saving the files to a USB flash drive.  But, somewhere along the way, some software has to read the file and convert it to data that is useable by current software.

More information would help. How is the external connected? Does the external appear on your Desktop? Has the external been formatted for a Mac? What method do you use to transfer files? When you try to move a file to the external, what does happen?

  • I cannot get files from my desktop to my external hard drive

Does anyone have any information on why my external hard drive would not be allowing me to move files from my computer to my external hard drive?  I have a Seagate Free Agent external hard drive.  It has 1TB of space that is no where near being used.  It will show up on the desktop when I plug it in, but i cannot move anything to it.  Also, I have a few movies on the external hard drive that I cannot view for some reason.  Does anyone have any input on why that could be?  It gives me the pop up window that says "a required codec isn't available."  Any onformation will be very helpful.  Thank you in advance for your help.
