Moving iPhoto images to PC

How can I transfer images and videos in iPhoto'11 (in Mac running OS X) to Adobe Photoshop Elements on a PC running Windows 7?

If just having the original files is enough and not the modified file, open the library like <a href="http://homepage.mac.com/toad.hall/.Pictures/Forum/<a href="http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/10045891">ACDSee Pro 1.1.148" target="_blank">this and COPY the Originals folder to the external, FAT formatted, hard drive or flash drive.
This way you will have all of the photos in folders that represent the current Events in iPhoto. Also it will be faster than trying to export, organize and then copy to the external HD.

Thanks but I have no "Put Back" option when right-clicking. When I attempt to open a photo in iPhoto I receive a white exclamation point on a black background. I have restarted my PC since first encountering this problem but have not emptied trash though i appear to be out of memory. Also, iphoto library shows size as 17GB however, each photo shows 0KB. When i attempt to open a photo i receive message "Item <photo filename> is used by Mac OS X and cannot be opened." I can see the images when scrolling in iPhoto but they disappear when the screen is still. THANKS!

IPhoto images missing in Edit window after importing iPhoto albums folder

A friend of mine with new macbook tried to import her iPhoto images from an external hardrive. She move it to her user photo album and then i believe she tried to point to it after launching iphoto. She told me there were some options windows popping up and she does not remember what they said but the current result is that many of her photos do not appear when she clicks on the thumb nails to edit them: said there is a grey field with a questin mark.
My thought was to somehow repoint to the file or dump the .plst file.
Any ideas?

The question mark shows up when the link between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window loses the location of the file it points to.
The most common cause of this is User activity in the iPhoto Library Folder. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss.
As your friend now sees.
Unless your friend nows exactly what changes she has made, I'm afraid the best way to fix this is to start again, importing from your originals folder.

Move iPhoto images back to iPhone

I moved the images first from iPhone to iPhoto. Now that they are edited I want to move them back from iPhoto to iPhone. Is this possible?

To confirm - these are photos that were captured by your iPhone and imported to your Mac by iPhoto?
If so, the answer is yes.
Under the Photos tab for your iPhone sync preferences are your options for transferring photos from your Mac to your iPhone.
Select "Sync photos from:" and select iPhoto is not already selected.
Below this are various options, which must be followed by a sync.
If you create an iPhoto album for these particular photos, along with selecting other iPhoto albums, any changes made to selected iPhoto albums will be reflected on your iPhone when syncing - including adding new photos to these albums, changes made to these photos such as edits, and removing photos from an album or albums.

IMovie 11 not importing iPhoto images

Since installing iLife 11 I can no longer import iPhoto images into my iMovie projects. Here's the detail:
I select a photo from my iPhoto collection using the multimedia navigator in the bottom right-hand corner of iMovie. I drag an icon of the photo into my iMovie project. The icon appears a few seconds later in the project. But when I play the project, the photo is not shown, the previous sequence freezes for the duration of the time that the image was meant to appear. What's wrong?
Similarly, the iMovie function which is supposed to identify iPhoto images corresponding to the event I am working on, does not work.
I have an Intel iMac and the latest versions of Snow Leopard, iMovie and iPhoto (version iLife 11).
I am naively shocked that two iLife programmes do not interact seamlessly.

John - that's an excellent workaround which I've used on the odd occasion. But be aware that if you subsequently move the image from the Desktop to another location, the project may lose track of it (the project links to the image file). But if you do the same after moving the image, Reveal in Finder doesn't work, that is, nothing happens. What I do with problem images in iPhoto is drag them to the Desktop, then open in Preview. From Preview I then Save As a jpeg file (even though it may already be in jpeg format). Finally, I re-import the saved image to iPhoto and use that image in iMovie - secure in the knowledge that I'm unlikely to move it again once stored in iPhoto. Re-saving images in Preview seems to help when they are not playing well with iMovie (or iPhoto for that matter).

IPhoto image description

Recently my PB G4 hard drive crashed but fortunately I had a backup on an external drive. I have imported the iPhoto images (iPhoto 08) from the external drive to a new iMac running OS10.6.2 and iPhoto 09.
The images moved ok to the new iPhoto app however all the event titles, image titles, descriptions, keywords and input information for images and events did not transfer. How do I restore the photo descriptions and events to the new iPhoto 09 app?

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. You don't want to import an library into another library. You lose all of the metadata, albums, slideshows, etc. and gain duplicate files since each original, modified and thumbnail file is imported as it were an original file.
Do you have a backup of the iPhoto Library package? If so then copy it into your User/Pictures folder replacing any library there now and launch iPhoto.

Mosaic has blank spots since moving iphoto to an external drive

Try creating a symbolic link to your library on the EHD and place it in your Pictures folder. The launch iPhoto with the Option key held down, Choose, navigate to the symbolic link in the Pictures folder and select it. Then setup the mosaic again and see if that improves the situation.

Downsize iPhoto images & export them to a folder using Automator?

Please bear with me. I wasn't sure where to post this since I can't find an Automator string in the Discussions window. This is what I'd like to do. I'm making web site using iWeb and I love it. However, when dragging and dropping images into iWeb from the iPhoto media browser, it imports the original iPhoto image into iWeb and not the edited one. This seems stupid to me but there it is. So as some have suggested I thought I'd grab and album and have all the photos in it downsized to 800x(constrained proportion). Can Automator do this? When i poke around in the iPhoto actions in Automator I don't see much. I've searched AutomatorWorld also and can't find anything there. Am I being dim about this?

Moving iPhoto to external drive; have formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), moved the iPhoto library to external drive; when trying to change the library, the iPhoto file on new external is greyed out can't be selected.What went wrong?

Must have done something wrong..
1. formatted external disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - required a partition, but that went fine. Entire new external disk was included in the partition formatted to Mac OS Extneded (journaled).
2. moved iPhoto library to new external disk
3. Holding Option key down, opened iPhoto
4. Choose library feature appeared, however when new library function option appeared and "choose library" selected, the iPhoto folder appearing in the new external drive was greyed out and not able to be selected. Therefore the default library remains the original iphoto library on the Mac.
I've moved the original iphoto library to the trash and then tried to start iPhoto. A message comes up that the iPhoto is in the trash and needs to be pulled out before iPhoto can start (clearly the new iphoto library on the external drive is not being seen.
Can anyone suggest where I went awry? Thanks!

Try trash the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from the HD/Users/ Your Name / library / preferences folder.
(On 10.7 or later: Hold the option (or alt) key while clicking on the Go menu in Finder to access the User Library)
(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)
What's the plist file?
For new users: Every application on your Mac has an accompanying plist file. It records certain User choices. For instance, in your favourite Word Processor it remembers your choice of Default Font, on your Web Browser is remembers things like your choice of Home Page. It even recalls what windows you had open last if your app allows you to pick up from where you left off last. The iPhoto plist file remembers things like the location of the Library, your choice of background colour, whether you are running a Referenced or Managed Library, what preferences you have for autosplitting events and so on. Trashing the plist file forces the app to generate a new one on the next launch, and this restores things to the Factory Defaults. Hence, if you've changed any of these things you'll need to reset them. If you haven't, then no bother. Trashing the plist file is Mac troubleshooting 101.
Then try select it again.

I was able to import photos in iPhoto and Image capture when I was running SL 10.6.8 on my older MacBook.
Did you try quitting everything, restart the Mac and then try again?
Are there any updates at all for the Mac? I was helping one user not all that long ago and there were updates for her Mac software that had nothing to do with the OS and when she downloaded the updates - the iPad was then recognized in iTunes.

What exactly dod you have and have you done?
What version of iPhoto did you have and what version do you now have? Of the OS? If you are upgrading from iphoto '08 or earlier did you download and RUN the iphoto library upgrader?

I just moved iPhoto (9.6) library to EHD from my MBP. I had been running time machine backups. With the library now on an EHD, will time machine run a seamless backup next time i connect (if i allow TM to see other drives)?

I just moved iPhoto library to EHD and removed the iPhoto library on MBP. I have enabled external drives to be accessed on TM. The next time i run a TM backup with the EHD connected, will TM run a seamless backup or will it not like the fact that a backup is now spread across two devices where it used to be on only one?

By default EHDs are excluded for TM backups - you have to go to the TM preferences ==> options and remove them from the excluded list
And you need two disks connected -one for your iPhoto library and one for the TM backup - TM will backup all hard drives that ar not excluded - you do not need multiple TM backup disks

Trying to update iphone from ios4.x to 5.x moved iphoto

Moved Iphoto and Itunes libraries to external drive with 700 GB+ available
(Those applications won't open anything without the drive hooked up-I think those moves are legit.)
when I click the button in itunes that says " a newer version of the iphone software is available...."
it wants to back everything up and I get to this:
The media on this iPhone cannot be backed up because there is not enough free space on this computer to hold all of the backed up files (10.61 GB required, 4.97 GB available). Would you like to continue to update this iPhone?
Those files shouldn't be getting squeezed into my tiny laptop hard drive, they should be effortlessly plopped into the vast expanse of the LaCie external thing.
In a spirit of "what the heck", I just tried it anyway. The stuff is backed up already. It gave me a "startup disk is almost full" message and I aborted the process.
This seems way harder than it should be. What am I doing wrong?

Mac OS X: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup
onto the external drive. I gather that that it isn't so straightforward, I may need to create a "symbolic link"
any good rescources on doing that ?
