Moving iTunes from Mac to Windows 8

I have decided to change from a Mac mini to a PC in my living room so I can also use it for gaming, I'm trying to move my iTunes library to this PC using the method that has always worked (consolidating to a external HDD, copying the itl file and then holding shift when starting iTunes to load the old library). However, while all my media is seen, the file paths are incorrect. I thought this would be a simple matte rto use find-replace when editing the XML file, but every time I reload iTunes seems to revert or change the file paths (for example, I changed everything to D:/Music/Album etc, but when iTunes loads it's changed everything to D:/iTunes Media/Muisc/Album)
Any suggestions?

So I kept fiddling and found that I also had to change the path the library is associated with in Preferences - Advanced. While this has fixed a lot of the library, there are still 971 files that can't be located (even though they are were they are meant to be) and all my iTunes Extras files still have the old path...
Is there a way to fix the files in bulk? Every time I change the XML file, iTunes reverts the missing files to the old path.

Moving software from Mac to Windows

I took the easy way out & had Windows set up by the Apple retailer when the computer was purchased; however I now need to install new hardware in the Windows environment. When the CD containing the drivers, etc. is inserted, its icon is shown on Mac's desktop & it also appears in the Finder window. So far so good.
However, try as I might, I just cannot find the way to move these program files over to Windows, or have Windows open the .exe installation file, etc. (Ordinary files moved across to a Windows application, such as a spreadsheet, have never presented any problems!). It is a total block!
Advice greatly appreciated.

The answer to that is.......DESPERATION!
When I loaded the software/drivers CD, it came up with the install menu, reached the "copying electronic registration files - 98%", then froze with not the slightest trace of Windows. I tried what I could but that install screen came back to haunt me; it took half an hour of help from the Apple Support Team to restore things to normal functioning.
So I just wondered if there was another way around the installation problem? Alternatively, as I was trying to use the same hardware linked to both the Mac & a PC (it works on the latter &, if the manufacturer can be believed, should on the former) to which Apple expressed doubts, perhaps the simple solution would be to invest in a new Mac dedicated piece of hardware.

Moving Music From Mac to Windows

I have all my music on my iPod mini and my iMac G5. The problem is that my parents gave me my dad's old Sotec laptop operating Windows XP for my birthday.
I want to transfer my music from my iPod to my new Windows laptop. I've read on the Apple website that this won't work because my iPod is Mac-formatted. Are there are any software programs out there or alternative methods that can help me do this?
I can burn a CD, but I'd like another method, if possible.
Also, please do not send answers to the [email protected] address because it doesn't work anymore.

Why not just keep everything on the G5? There may be a third party software program out there that will allow you to rip a Mac Formatted iPod onto a Windows library...but I don't know. Try a google search. There are many third party software programs out there that let you rip iPod onto iTunes, but as far as I know, they are either for Mac or for PC.

Using external hard drive for itunes from mac to windows

Hello, I have an external hard drive for my itunes music connected to a G4. I just bought a laptop (windows) and would like to connect the external drive to it so it will read my music from the external hard drive. How can i do that?

You will lose all data when you reformat so you must copy it elsewhere temporarily, as for the format go to: Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>Erase, in the format dropdown select MSDOS (FAT) and in the name dropdown, type a name.
Copy your data back to it and it will be accessible to windows and osx

Moving Itunes from XP to Windows 7

How do I move my entire itunes library and playlists from XP to 7? I tried replacing the Itunes folderin 7 with my XP itunes folder and everything shows up but all the files show missing when I try to play them. It seems this is due to different mapping of the file structures. How can I do this...Please help!

I have downloaded iTunes 9 (64 bit) to my new laptop now, and I managed to get it to find one song in my library. Short of telling it to find every single one of my 1000 or so songs and videos individually, is there an easy way to get the new laptop to find the files on the external drive? I've been searching through the knowledge base and keep seeing posts and information about backing up the library and so on, but nothing about switching from one OS to another. I tried what was posted above, but found the linked article very long and it didn't seem to cover what I'm trying to do.
I'd really like to be able to get this done so I can sync my iPod again on a machine that will be able to recognize a USB 2.0 port for what it is and not as two USB 1.0 ports (my old laptop has issues).

Need Help moving from mac to Windows

I did search the forum, but could not find it, so I thought I will ask.
I have to move from PowerBook to a Windows XP machine. (I see lots of threads moving from mac to windows but not otherway around).
How do I move the iTunes music. I want to keep the ratings, don't want to redo the ratings for 1000+ songs.
If it was previously asked and answered, please point me towards that thread.

Sorry for the redundant post. I had problem doing this, and was able to make it work. The trick was renaming the file iTunes Library to iTunes Library.itl (with the extension).
Once I did that, it works well.

Is transfer from Mac to Windows via external HD possible?

I have been using my mums macbook pro and now I'm moving to town for school and only have a HP laptop can I transfer my music over to an external HD from mac to windows and authorise as well? I will visit often and want to have my purchased itunes music on both. If I buy a song on my HP will it update the mac one automatically or do I need to use my external HD every time? And lastly if it does update automatically, what about music not purchased on itunes, will it transfer those as well? I am a mac noob so please keep your answers easy

Connect the external drive to the MacBook Pro
Copy the entire iTunes folder from the MacBook Pro to the external drive.
Open the iTunes folder on the external drive
Rename the file iTunes Library as iTunes Library.itl
Delete the files iTunes Music Library.xml and iTunes Library Genius.itdb
Connect the external drive to the HP laptop
Install iTunes if you haven't already, close it if running
Click the icon to start iTunes and immediately press and continue to hold down the shift key until asked to choose or create a library
Click Choose, navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and select the file iTunes Library.itl
Authorise the laptop to your iTunes account
If you are based in the US then music purchases made on one machine can be set to automatically download to your other libraries and any iOS devices. The rest of the world, at present, is limited to downloading apps and iBooks purchased from the store. Coming soon is iCloud which will, for a fee, also allow non-store-purchased music to be backed up and synced to your computers or iOS devices via the cloud.

Use iTunes on the PC to restore the iPod, or install XPlay on the PC without changing the format. Restoring the iPod will erase everything on it.

Moving Itunes From one computer to another

HI,
Can anyone offer advice for moving Itunes from one laptop to another? The original laptop that has my itunes on it, has broke, it froze and will not operate. Rather that lose all my purchased music and playlists i would like to swap it to another laptop. Can anyone advise if this will be possible and how to do it? Both laptops have windows XP installed

I am having a similar problem- when I record from Itunes to a cd it only works in "Data cd" format in the advanced tab. That's okay, but when I re-insert the cd and try to import it, it doesn't show anything- it plays in Itunes okay. There aren't any little boxes to check for selecting any songs and if I try to use the import function, it shows as blank.(file type shows as .txt) I am using Itunes 6- would Itunes 7 help this?

Yes, I too fell in love at first sight with the nano, and will be giving my mini to my boyfriend (who got it for me in the first place). He uses PCs and Windows.
I did a search on reformatting the mini from Mac to Windows but all the answers seemed to involve installing the iPod for Windows software. I don't seem to have this anymore, and Apple helpfully doesn't provide it for download.
Sooo...how is my boyfriend to reformat my mini for PC? Will just plugging it into a machine loaded with iTunes for Windows do it?

Download the latest version of iTunes and the iPod software updater onto the PC. Install iTunes, then the iPod software updater. Then run the iPod software updater, connect the mini when told, and choose to restore.

Copying files from Mac to Windows-invalid file names

Unfortunately, my boss likes Windows more than Macs, so we have puchased some new Dell computers to replace older G4 Macs.
I'm having trouble copying existing files from a Mac (OS 10.4)to the shared drive on the Windows XP computer. I'm getting an error message:
"You can't copy the item 'filename' because the name is too long or includes characters that the disk can't display." Sometimes it doesn't give a filename, it gives a similar message "Some items couldn't be copied..."
I assume the person has used some "illegal" file names such as "Meeting minutes 10/7/07" Or maybe we have too many folders inside of folders.
QUESTION: Is there a correct/better way to copy large quantites of files/folders from Mac to Windows? Or is there a program that will look at the Mac files and alert me to wrong or too long files names?
Other ideas to copy these files?

You can use a freeware utility like Renamer4Mac or BatchRename'em both of which have built-in filters that will rename files for Windows compatibility.
Thank you... This sounded to me like it would fix the problem, so I downloaded both and looked at them. However, the manual/help file is very sparse, so I don't know if it will do what I want to and how it would do it.
1. I couldn't find any option in either program to: Look at all files in selected folder, and list any invalid file names for Windows.
2. There doesn't seem to be an option to "rename files without bad Windows characters" or "Remove invalid for Windows characters"
I just couldn't find any explanation of how it was offering to rename the files. I can't rename all files to sequential names, that would make it hard to find a file later.

If you want a cross-platform solution that doesn't require the use of third-party software, use an external drive with hardware encryption. The device will have either a physical key or a numeric keypad. I don't have a specific recommendation.

Mapping fonts from Mac to Windows in CS4

What is the most efficient process to map fonts in multiple documents opened from Mac to Windows?
Currently we are working on 600+ documents that we need to convert to Windows from Mac. Every time we open a new document, the missing fonts dialog comes up. We replace the fonts. However, it appears there's no provision to automatically do this for every new opened document without manually going through this process each time!
Couldn't find any reference to this issue in Help, KB, forum. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

OK guys, here's where we are now: apparently there's no way to batch process multiple documents without going each time through the "missing fonts" dialog. However, we were able to make this process as short as possible by using "load character styles" for each document when opened.
And it's possible to do this across the network.
Going through "load character styles" and synchronizing two documents [the saved one and the latest opened one], we are able to at least map the fonts consistently from doc to doc. This operation is still time consuming, especially considering the large number of docs we have to process.
I'm going to look into the scripting option if there's a way to automate this process.
The same synchronization process could be done by using the "book" option. But that involves again manually adding documents to the book one-by-one.
