Moving iTunes Libraries and Album Art

I’m running iTunes on a Windows desktop and have about 700 albums. I’ve manually added album art to about 100 of these. I have a need to determine the BPM of all my songs so I can group them accordingly. I’m using Tangerine to do this. It is a Mac-only app (and is fantastic!) so I port my entire iTunes folder from the desktop to a MacBook via a USB drive. When I view the library on the Mac, it doesn’t show the album art for those 100 albums, nor does it do so when I move the iTunes folder back to the Windows desktop after Tangerine has updated the BPM values.
What can I do to keep this album art?
Thanks, MERunner

Make sure your ID3 tags are v2.3. iTunes default imports as v2.2.
Just highlight the songs, right click > Convert ID3 tags.
Also, you need to add the artwork to the ID3 tag of each file. iTunes by default puts it in a folder on each PC to save space, by just having one artwork file per album, not per song.

  • New iTunes update and album art question

I like the new look/features of iTunes but the option where it will add album art to your songs, does that only apply to songs in your library or will it update the ones already on your iPod? I am trying to see if there is a way but no luck yet. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Not as far as I know, apple "Thinks" the songs you have on the ipod are on iTUnes so there not really pushing for a feature like that.
You can add them nback to the PC and back them up, or use the backups you have

  • My iPod 4G, after reset and iOS 6 install, now has only some album art after syncing music. Even music directly downloaded from iTunes is missing album art. (I'm using iTunes 11.0.1 on Windows Vista)

My iPod 4G, after a reset and iOS6 install, after I recopied and synced music, is missing most album art. Even songs directly downloaded from iTunes are missing album art. I'm using iTunes 11.0.1 on Windows Vista. My iPod isn't full. Whenever I go to "On This iPod" and add album art and sync, nothing happens. Please help :/

    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync all music and resync
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

I am running iTunes on an IBM compatible system running Windows XP with a relatively small hard disk (70gb). I have 4 kids with 4 IPOD Touches, multiple IPOD Nanos, etc. Their apps and album art are eating up the hard disk space. I changed the Media Folder through Edit, Prferences, Advances, iTunes Media Folder to an external hard disk. The new music downloads and purchases go there but the apps and other items do not. How do I get the apps and other iTunes software and downloads to go to the external hard disk

There is no built in function to make this happen.
    Your options are:
    Upgrade the existing hard drive.
Try creating a link for the app folder on the external drive... this may or may not work.
Realistically, a larger hard drive is a better solution, then use the external drive for keeping a backup of the ENTIRE iTunes folder and any other personal data on the system.

  • Question on Lost Tags and Album Art

O.K., I mentioned in another thread that my iTunes library suddenly vanished, but I have been able to “Add file to library” to get everything back in there. Unfortunately, a lot of my album art and my tagging went back to the way it was before I modified it. If I open iTunes again and find nothing there (seems unfortunately to be common) and have to add the folder back in, is there anyway to do that with all the tags and album art in tact?

    Hi Ken,
If this is what I think you are referring to Ken, then don't worry, all is not lost.
This has happened to me once or twice in the past when either installing a new version of iTunes or when I have re-linked my iPod to my other computer.
One thing to check first though:
If you open iTunes and look in your Library and select any track you like (you don’t kneed to play it) and make sure that you have the 'Show or Hide Song Artwork' tab at the bottom left of iTunes (its the fourth one in) selected, can you see the Artwork for your track?
I know you are concerned about the artwork on your iPod, but this is important, if it is showing that’s great. If not, it might just be switched off. If you look at the grey bar that makes the top of the Artwork box that views the image, does it say 'Selected Song' or 'Now Playing'? If it is the latter, then with your mouse just click on it and your Artwork for that track should appear.
Makes sure this is the case for a few others, and if so, your artwork is not lost and can easily be put back on to your iPod.
Now Make sure your iPod is connected and showing in the Sources list on the right of iTunes.
Now go into the iPod options menu by going to the Edit menu and selecting the bottom option 'Preferences' and then opening the iPod tab. You will see an option to show your artwork on your iPod. Select this then click OK out of the Preferences and do an update.
iTunes will then say its updating your iPod, and when it has confirmed that your music is updated, it will then import all your artwork back into your iPod and it should then be present when you use your iPod.
Depending how many tracks you have on your iPod and in iTunes, this might take quite some time. For me last time without about 4 tracks on an AMD Athlone this took about 40 minutes.
I hope this is of help.

  • Want to erase and install & reinstall iTunes libraries and some documents

My iMac G4 Flat Panel is 9gb shy of being totally full and performance really suffers as a result. I want to erase the drive and install Leopard (I just bought a new disk).
What is the best way(s)/procedures to backup my iTunes libraries and some documents so that I can reinstall them on the newly formatted drive?
After paying for the Leopard disk, I don't want to buy any other programs to do the backup. I have been backing up the drive to an external using Backup.

    Steven,
Backup is a fine application, but it typically targets specific items to be backed up. Meaning, that it is not necessarily entirely comprehensive. At least not in the context of migrating from one installation to another.
One of the concepts present in OS X is the idea that everything that makes your account "yours," all of your data, settings, history, etc., is entirely contained within your HOME folder. By moving that HOME folder into any new installation, you essentially transplant your entire experience as a user into the new location. In many cases, this works so well that, if someone did it behind your back while "swapping" computers with you, you would never know the difference. That's how it works, in theory.
In practice, there are usually some minor things that pop up in such a transfer, but these are all minor in the extreme. One might end up with a "question mark" or two in one's Dock, resulting from the absence of a linked application in the new installation. The question mark can be removed, or the application in question can be installed, so these things are easy enough to fix.
Your situation is complicated somewhat by the fact that you want to "whittle down" what you restore to the new installation. The assumption I make, based on your posts, is that you have only the one account, and your single HOME folder contains enough data to consume most of your disk space. OK, you can handle this several ways...
You could cover all bases by making one complete backup of your HOME folder as it is now, then begin "whittling down" what you have now before wiping your drive and reinstalling. This would give you the opportunity to reduce your disk space consumption while still working within your HOME folder; testing what you do, as it were, and with the knowledge that your deletions are not irreversible. When you find the right balance between what you can delete and what you must keep, you can make an additional backup of your reduced HOME folder (provided you have enough space on your external drive).
Or, you could make a complete backup of your HOME folder, as it exists now, then go ahead and format/reinstall. You would then have to decide what you will move from the backup into your new account. Part of this process is knowing just where to place transferred items for everything to work properly. As far as simple files are concerned, it wouldn't make any difference where you place them. Items contained in libraries, however, might be quite complicated to move, unless you simply moved the entire libraries in question. In these cases, the libraries themselves must be transferred to the correct locations. It's not an insurmountable problem, but it does complicate matters a bit.
Finally, you could backup and restore the HOME folder as it currently exists. Typically, the process of formatting and reinstalling, then restoring user data, results in a more compact installation. Over time, any installation accrues some fragmented free space, and this effectively reduces the storage capacity of a volume. As much as or more than 10% of the size of the volume can be recovered this way. In any case, your new installation will be smaller than the old to some degree, even with all of your user data restored. Once you get to this point, you could begin reducing the amount of data you have stored, just as in option #1 above, and again safe in the knowledge that nothing you delete is irrecoverable.
rsync is powerful. While it is easy to use, it has many options and is therefore complex to learn. Its "man pages" might be considered daunting. I could provide a copy and paste command for you to run which would make a complete backup of your HOME folder, provided I knew the path to a destination. The exact name of your external drive, along with any nested folders therein you might want to use as a destination, would suffice.
If you want to read more about rsync yourself, open Terminal and type "man rsync," then press <RETURN>. The "man" application will scroll line by line by using the arrow keys, and page by page by pressing the spacebar. Press "q" to quit the man application.

  • ITunes not Finding Album Art (Which Does Exist)

For reasons that I have been unable to ascertain, iTunes cannot find album art for some albums that I have ripped. The art does exist on iTunes--I've done a search and checked. The song text matches; the album title appears to match; but iTunes politely informs me "Artwork could not be found."
This is not due to the fact that these are songs I have ripped myself; iTunes has found plenty of other album art for tunes I've ripped myself. Something else is going on. A couple of examples for folks to chew on:
Godzilla - Blue Öyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper: The Best Of Blue Öyster Cult
Mirror In The Bathroom - The English Beat - Beat This! The Best of the English Beat
    Freeze-Frame - J. Geils Band - Freeze Frame
The Healer - John Lee Hooker - The Healer
There are plenty of others; that's just a sample. Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Have moved iTunes library and it is no longer 'seen' by iTunes

I have had to copy my iTunes library to an external hard drive (space constraints on laptop forced the issue) and I have also updated my preferences to point to this new location ([Edit] / [Preferences] / [Advanced]) but when I then took the option to consolidate the library ([Advanced] / [Consolidate library]) all that happens is that all the tracks in iTunes show an exclamation mark ( ! ) against them as iTunes has not recognised the new location. (I can however browse to the new location by right clicking against all tracks individually and navigating to the new location, but that is a non starter for all of the songs in the library. To compound the issue when I tried to make the old library location valid once more (as I have not yet deleted it from its old location), I got the same issue ( ! ) when I tried to consolidate the library again.
I am now in the privileged position of have 2 fully populated iTunes libraries and I am unable to consolidate and use either of them. Help, please.

    A Couple of questions..
Is the location shown under preferences/Advanced/General still showing the correct location?
Is the check boxes under this checked or unchecked?

What size if the Library as indicated in the Finder?  If it's large enough to be holding your photos then your photos are probably still in there but the library is damaged.  If the tags you used indicate iLife 11 then try the following:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
If the above falils to recover your photos continue with this:
Starting over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1. Open the library package like this.
    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    3. Drag the subfolders of the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window a few at a time.
This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.
Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • I recently moved my itunes library. Itunes deleted a lot of artist and album info and album art. Now it won't let me edit the info to correct it. Any advice on to correct this?

I recently bought a new Asus laptop and moved my itunes to it. All of my files are stored on an external hard drive. In the process of importing my files into itunes on the new laptop, some artist and album info has been deleted. A lot of album art is missing as well. I attempted to correct the missing info, but now itunes won't let me edit any track, artist or album info. Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.

You can't use your account's balance for gifting, you can only use a credit card - your balance can only be used to buy content for yourself. Until you pay what you owe iTunes then you won't be able to download any items from the store on that account.
If you haven't got a valid credit card then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they can cancel the gift or take what you owe them from your balance: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

  • Itunes and album art

I recently started importing my cds to itunes. Then I used the 'Get Album Artwork'. it worked fine for all accept one album that it separated into 4 different albums with the same album artwork and 4 different album titles. Is there any easy, quick way to combine all the songs back into the appropriate album. Or do I have to delete the albums, then import the album again and manually add the album art?
    Thanks, Denise

When you say four different album titles, do you literally mean that each track has a different title...or just that the songs aren't grouped together?
If you're having trouble getting album tracks to group together, have a look at this document:

  • ITunes 11 - metadata and album art incorrect when sharing to iPad

I just upgraded to iTunes 11. I'm accessing my shared iTunes library from a Macbook Pro on my new iPad using an Apple wireless router.  Neither the album art on song metadata is matching the displayed artist/album/song. Apple products from the beginning of the chain to the end. All was fine until I upgraded to iTunes 11. I thought Apple delayed the release to "get it right"? Anyone else having the same issue?

Home sarin with iPad has been messed up since iOS 6 and was hoping iTunes 11 would solve it. Seemed Italy it had bu the next time I selected the shared library, it's still messed up and out of order.

  • Very Strange and nasty iTunes (not iPod) Album Art Problem

    Hi,
I have the latest version of iTunes for Windows and I have never noticed this before on a previous version, but when I try to add album art to most (over 90%) of songs, the addition won't stay if I select another song.
Even worse, if I try to add art while the song is playing, not only will the addition dissappear, the song corrupts in the process. It's as if the jpeg file is inserted into the audio data itself, as the song will grow by a number of seconds (the growth consists of skips and repeats.)
I'm using iTunes with Windows Media Center. I have iTunes maintain my music folder, while Media Player / MCE monitors nothing. I also have a Media Center Extender setup (an Xbox360) that accesses my music as well (through the media player / MCE database.)
None of my music files are tagged as read-only. I have a suspicion that the cause of the problem may be along similar lines (file permissions, access, etc.) but nothing I've
tried works (including resetting all file permissions.)
In addition, none of the iTunes Art Importers work. In using the most popular one (iTunes Art Importer,) the program crashes to a .NET/CLR debugger when I try to import art. Looking at the stack trace, it appears as if the error concerns DLL access.
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated, as this is a pretty horrible bug (as it has ruined several songs.)

Use the SHIFT-Launch iTunes method to get iTunes waiting for a library. Stick the iPod in disk mode and connect to the computer. Browse *My Computer* and right-click on the drive for the iPod, click Properties, then click Tools. Under Error-checking, click *Check Now*. Under Check disk options, select *Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors* (Optional - takes ages but a good idea if you've reason to suspect physical damage). Click Start. Mac users should run *Disk Utility / Repair Disk* for the equivalent process. This should find and correct any errors in the logical & physical structures of your iPod's hard drive which may be causing the problem. When the process is complete disconnect the iPod and then reset it (hold Menu+Select ). Cancel the waiting iTunes dialog and then try to connect in the normal way.
If that still doesn't work you could try Erase your iPod - The Super Fix for most iPod Problems. Basically a low level format of the iPod’s hard drive to get around whatever problems are stopping iTunes from working with it.
Have you tried connecting the iPod to another computer to see if the issues is focused on the iPod or iTunes?
