Moving library and coping files

Greetings all. I am a new Apple convert. I am using Aperture 2.14 and have a large library ~ 65gigs. I want to move the entire thing to an external drive, but do not want to lose any files. Can I just copy the Aperture library from my Mac HD to the external, then go into preferences to re-direct Aperture?
Also, if you have the time, how do I copy individual files from the library to another drive for porting to a friend's computer?
Thanks!

This should work fine - and you can test it w/o getting rid of your old library as well. One suggestion make sure your drive is formatted as HFS (Mac OS X) not FAT.
To get single images just use export version and choose a format and size for the selected images.

The sample library only has been available with the boxed version of Aperture sold from the Apple Store; that version is no longer available; but with the App Store version you got yourself the much better bargain, far less expensive and a less restrictive licence agreement.
You can easily use your own images to do the Tutorials.

  • I click on "add to library" and the file shows up in my iTunes media file, but not in my iTunes.

I click on "add to library" and the file shows up in my iTunes media file, but not in my iTunes.

That didn't work - I'm so confused - it just doesn't make sense.  How could it be there, but not show up on itunes???

  • Backing up library and referenced files

I download my images to an external F800 hard drive and organize them in folders labeled with the dates in which the download took place.
I manage them in aperture as referenced files.
I just got a second external hard drive for back up purposes. What is the best way to back up my library and referenced files?. My external hard drive allows daisy-chaining.
Sorry if this is too simple a question, but before doing something wrong I rather ask.
thanks for the patience and will to reply,
    best
    Mauricio

Backup the Aperture Library to your new drive using Aperture's Vault feature. Backup the folders of Masters by Finder-copying the folders to the new drive immediately after the folders are created. That should be a nice clean workflow.
Don't forget some type of off site backup to deal with the possibility of fire or theft.

  • Does arch install library and header files into system when using abs?

In traditional make way, when compiling a package, I must install some library or header file or tool packages to satisfy its depends, but after compilation, I do "make install", and run it. At runtime, library and header file and tool packages are not needed....
This make a lot of unuseful packages are left in the system.....
In arch linux , when I using abs to make a package, does these packages are left in the system ?
How abs separates the compile-time depends and the runtime depends ????

I think the best method is file dependence , not package dependence.....
Software is arranged by package. but its dependence is file. When Install a package, pacman check its file dependence, and install the packages which include those files....
If a  not explicit installed package 's file does not required by any other packages , it can be removed automatically !
In this situation ,pacman can find packages that not needed after compilation, and remove them.

After installing the current update for the Mac I noticed that all my pictures, Itunes library and some apps and other files disapeared from the computer.  Anyone know any voodoo to bring them back?

  • MOVING LIBRARY AND PLAYLIST TO A NEW PC

I had my music library i an external hard disk, where i have even a backup copy of it.
Now I changed my pc and I would like to use the same library and playlist on the new pc, can somebody tell me how to do it?
I have already got the songs on the new itunes, but not the playlist.
    Thank you very much

Apart from copying the actual music files themselves across on to your new computer, the files you need to copy across in order to maintain your playlists are called "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml".
Not sure where the relevant files are stored under Windows, but on a Mac, the files are located at:
    Username >
    Music >
    iTunes >
Just do a search for the file called "iTunes Music Library.xml", see where it is on your current machine, and then copy that file and all the other files in that folder across to the same place on your new machine.

  • Moving projects and associated files around, Possible?

I was asked to work on a project for a add agency directly from their office, now the projects where saved on the boot up drive, it barely has space, i want to move the files unto a external drive but inside a proper folder structure i can understand, seems like FCP so far only saves files on a chosen scratch disk, is there a way to save the files on a disk and inside a folder?

Sure.  You can simply select a project in the Project Library area and choose File menu > Move Project, or File menu > Duplicate Project, depending on your specific needs.

  • Moving lrcat and lrdata files to another drive

I am running Lightroom 4 and keep all my photos on an external drive, (LaCie), backing them up to another external, (Big LaCie), but the lrdata and lrcat files are held on my start-up disk, (Mac SSD), for some reason and this is now so full that it is slowing up / stopping the whole computer.
(The Backups folder in the picture above simply holds backups of the data and cat files).
Obviously, I think, it would be best to move the data and cat files to the external disk LC but I am worried to do this and then find that these files will not be found by LR.
Please can someone tell me how I should resolve this issue while my computer still works? Cheers.

The catalogue file can be moved but if you're moving it to an external drive I'd add a word of caution.
It will almost certainly slow the running of LR down unless you've got a fast link external drive.  There's noting to stop you copying it to the external drive as an experiment.  I'd rename it whilst copying as you don't get confused as to which is which.  You only need to copy the lrcat file.  LR will rebuild the previews file.
Personally I'd look at other files that can be moved (starting with the LR backup files, as they shouldn't be on the same drive as your main catalog anyway in case that drive dies and you lose both the live catalog and all your backups...in case you're not backing up the backups somewhere else too).   After that I'd move any files that are data/media from the SSD...Movies, Music Documents etc.
As for why the catalog is on your SSD, well that's where it will run fastest from (though differences vary from system to system).  I have a separate SSD just for my LR catalog.

  • Moved library and lost iOS application files

I moved my iTunes libraries using iTunes 10. Using the "change file location" function and the "Organize Library" function. I needed to move them out of my user folders to a more central location accessible by all users.
I had to do it in two steps because I have 50GB of media but didn't have an extra 50GB of space on my macbook drive. So I moved it once to an external firewire drive. Then deleted the files off my main drive to free up the space. Then I moved them back to my macbook drive, again using the built in iTunes functionality.
Everything worked fine for my music and movies and video. But my applications didn't move. And now I am not sure how to fix it.
When I select Applications on the left in iTunes 10, it shows the icons of all the applications I have - but there is a little exclamation point on each icon that indicates iTunes can't actually find the files. If I click on an icon it wants me to locate the files - but I don't actually have them any more.
I have synced my iPhones with no problems, all the apps are still on the iphones.
My problem is I just upgraded an iPod touch to 4.1 and I need to update all of it's apps but since iTunes can't find any of the files, it won't update them on the iPod.
I have 130 applications purchased with three separate Apple Accounts, and installed on two iPhones and one iPod Touch. There is a bug (already logged and accepted) in the iOS that it won't let you update all your apps on an iDevice if they were purchased with separate accounts - it gets into a goofy "validate account" loop that never gets resolved. So the only option until that bug is fixed is to update them using iTunes on my macbook - then when you sync the iDevice they get the updated applications.
It looks like my only solution may be to go and "buy" each app (download) again individually - but that will be extremely tedious, and a pain for me to remember which account purchased which app... And for 130 apps, having to "search", and "find", and "buy" each one and having to do it logging out and in to each itunes account will be annoying.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I wish there was a "re-download apps" functionality in iTunes.
Thanks if anyone has any ideas...

I have an idea. not sure how well it work.
I've noticed that when I connect my phone to a different
computer is tells me I have apps on the phone that are not
in itunes, and would I like to copy them into itunes.
    so here is my idea.
    quit itunes
    rename the itunes folder
start itunes - it will create a new itunes folder
plug in your iphone, hope it asks you if you'd like to copy apps into itunes
(don't sync your phone else you might lose everything on it)
If this works, it should generate a folder called Mobile Applications.
Copy this folder into your old renamed itunes folder.
Delete the temporary itunes folder, rename the old one back, and all should be well. Maybe.
I wouldn't do this without having a good backup, and I also wouldn't do it without first looking carefully to see if you can find your existing Mobile Applications folder.

  • Moved library and now iTunes will not update

I moved my library to a thumb drive because it was getting too big for my harddrive.  This worked without fail until I filled up that drive, too.  I got a bigger one and moved everything there. This was about a month ago.  Everything was working fine until this morning when iTunes prompted me to update.  The update will not install because it is apparently trying to access the no longer extant E drive.  iTunes is now on F.
    I am running Windows 7 64 bit.
This is my first post to a forum and I am not terribly tech savvy so I apologize in advance for any misunderstandings.

Option 1 - The entire iTunes folder is on drive F:
Press and hold down shift as you launch iTunes, keep holding until asked to choose or create a library, click choose, browse to the iTunes and open the file iTunes Library.itl inside it.
Option 2 - Only the media folder is on F:
Press the WinLogoKey+R on your keyboard.
Type in Diskmgmt.msc and press enter.
Right-click on drive F: and select Change Drive Letter and Paths...
Click Change and change it to E: - if something is already using E change that first to G: or H: or...
    iTunes should now work.
In either case, get another disk and start backing up.

  • Can I connect a NAS-based library and music files to an outboard DAC via ethernet

I am running iTunes via a Drobo Transporter NAS through an Airport Express using the analog output but would like to send the digital signal via ethernet to an outboard DAC. Is this possible? I haven't been able to get it to work. I am running a 2009 Macbook Pro 17", OS X 10.9.5, iTunes 11.4, Airport Extreme as router, ethernet connected to Airport Express. My network: internet from microwave tower to Airport Extreme via ethernet connection. Airport Extreme connected to 5-port switch which connects via ethernet to Transporter, outboard DAC, and Airport Express. My music files and iTunes library are on the Transporter.

Thanks, Niel! As it turned out, I had a LaCie rugged drive at my place which had both Firewire 400 and Firewire 800 connections and cables. So I hooked it up to the old iBook, pulled my sister's stuff onto it as instructed in the ppc to intel thread, and then hooked it up to the Macbook Pro. Problem solved! - almost. We did have two issues:
    1. My sister has a lot of music - more than 12 gigs were on the iBook's hard drive, but only about 6 made it onto the Macbook Pro. Why is that? I also got a message, when I was trying to move the music folder from the old library onto the new one, that OS X needed this folder and it couldn't be modified. Again, why is that? How, then, do you move files from a PPC to a machine running Lion? Again, a lot of her music files did make it over, but not all of them.
    2. All her photos did seem to come over - in duplicate, maybe even in triplicate. That is so annoying! The same thing happened to me when I was migrating between my old eMac G4 and my iMac G5. Why on earth does iPhoto do this, and how can we make it stop?!
But we did manage to get a lot of her stuff onto the new machine. When we get the adapter, she'll be able to add the files that are on the Verbatim drive. You've been very helpful!

  • Moved Library and Lost All Songs

I have a Windows XP laptop and an external HD. The goal is to have my whole CD library imported to the external HD using ITunes. However, I import the CD's at work to my laptop HD because I can't carry the external around. So, when I copy and then move the location from laptop to external, then delete the original copy from my laptop, it doesn't get mapped, and then I would have to go through song by song to edit info and find change where it's newly located. Can I do it differently so that this doesn't happen (maybe MOVE in Windows Explorer instead of COPY)? If there is a way to prevent this in the future, is there anything I can do about the stuff that's already misplaced? Thanks. B

    Hi Benjamin -
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You may have better luck in the iTunes for Windows area, but in the Mac version, in the file menu, there is an option for "Add to Library" If you chose the music folder on your external hard drive, it would find all of the files located there and add them to your music library. You could continue to do this each time you copy music to that folder without having duplicate entries in the library.
Also, if you try to play a song and it can't be found, I believe iTunes will prompt you to find the location. If this happens, it might find the rest of the files that are associated with that file. (Try the suggestion above first, though) if the file has already been imported, but can't be found, and you add a file that is identical to the missing file, it will recognize it as that song and change the link.
    Good luck!

  • Moving library and playlists to a new computer?

Is there an easier way to transfer everything to a new computer? Purchases from iTunes are easy enough, but I've also got all of the music that I've burned from discs, and gotten from Napster (From when they were subscription music site, not when they were a file sharing site! ). All in all thats 700+ songs I need to transfer, not to mention the 50+ playlists I have.... Any help would be very much appreciated!

The easiest way is to backup your library to an external drive, then restore that backup to the new machine.
See this User Tip for a suitable backup tool. As long as all the media is inside the iTunes Media folder which in turn is inside the main iTunes folder then the library can be restored to any location with enough room. If the media has been split out into one or more alternate locations then to successfully restore the library all the media must be restored to identical paths to those it was backed up from. You can use the same tool to restore the library to the new machine.
After confirming that your library is working properly on your new machine you should deauthorize the old one if you no longer need to access protected content on it.
