Moving library and playlists to a new computer?

Is there an easier way to transfer everything to a new computer? Purchases from iTunes are easy enough, but I've also got all of the music that I've burned from discs, and gotten from Napster (From when they were subscription music site, not when they were a file sharing site! ). All in all thats 700+ songs I need to transfer, not to mention the 50+ playlists I have.... Any help would be very much appreciated!

The easiest way is to backup your library to an external drive, then restore that backup to the new machine.
See this User Tip for a suitable backup tool. As long as all the media is inside the iTunes Media folder which in turn is inside the main iTunes folder then the library can be restored to any location with enough room. If the media has been split out into one or more alternate locations then to successfully restore the library all the media must be restored to identical paths to those it was backed up from. You can use the same tool to restore the library to the new machine.
After confirming that your library is working properly on your new machine you should deauthorize the old one if you no longer need to access protected content on it.

I am trying to move my library and playlists to a new computer by burning to CD's. However, I followed the directions by going to File and then Library - then they said to go to burn CD(s) - I DO NOT have that option for some reason. How do I do this? I have done the library sharing thing but I am getting rid of my primary computer and am afraid I will lose the library.

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
Then hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
and select the Library that you moved.  That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.
Your first option didn't work because you imported one Library to another. Every version and thumbnail is imported like a distinct photo, you lose all your Albums, Keywords etc., the link between Original and Previews is destroyed, the non-destructive editing feature is ruined and so on. In summary: it's mess.
Your second option didn't work because you simply referenced her library on the old machine.

  • MOVING LIBRARY AND PLAYLIST TO A NEW PC

I had my music library i an external hard disk, where i have even a backup copy of it.
Now I changed my pc and I would like to use the same library and playlist on the new pc, can somebody tell me how to do it?
I have already got the songs on the new itunes, but not the playlist.
    Thank you very much

Apart from copying the actual music files themselves across on to your new computer, the files you need to copy across in order to maintain your playlists are called "iTunes Library" and "iTunes Music Library.xml".
Not sure where the relevant files are stored under Windows, but on a Mac, the files are located at:
    Username >
    Music >
    iTunes >
Just do a search for the file called "iTunes Music Library.xml", see where it is on your current machine, and then copy that file and all the other files in that folder across to the same place on your new machine.

  • HT4527 Pb with Home share moving music and playlist transfers to new computer

I am trying to move my music library and playlists from my old computer (which I want to get rid of once I get my files transfered) to my new computer.  After searching and reading, it seemed Home Sharing would be easiest method.  I shared my library between my old and new computer.  The help screen indicated you had to then save the shared list to the new computer if you want to deactivate the sharing feature (and not use other computer).
When I tried to copy music I'd shared onto new computer, it appears to work until I go to play the music on the computer.  Then all the songs cut off about a minute from the end.  How do I fix this problem?
Playlists: With the playlists, I followed the directions and exported my playlists to a memory stick and then imported them onto the new computer via itunes.  The playlists all show up, but when I play music from the playlist it only plays the first 15 seconds of the song and then moves onto the next song.  How do I fix this problem?
Thanks for any insight, directions anyone can share.  I have a PC with Windows 7

With a Mac, you'd connect the iPhone to the Mac using the USB cable and then launch iPhoto or whatever other photo/movie application you like, and then import the videos from the phone. You should be able to do the same with your PC; use whatever video importer you like, it should treat the iPhone like any other camera.
You can also use this iOS app, but it will only work pictures and with fairly short videos.

  • How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?

How do I move both my contents and playlists to my new computer?  I have tried the suggestions in previous posts of copying the library and music folders into the itunes folder on my new pc.  I don't have the option to file>library>import anything.  The only thing that transfers, even on home sharing is purchased music.  No music loaded from CD's and no playlists.

  • The same itunes Library and playlists on the same computer with two systems

I want to have the same itunes library and playlists on the same computer with the two different Os 10.3.9 and 10.4.9 each one on the different disk. without copy this in the itunes folder (because my library its 30Gb)
I have the same user name on the Os. I use the same version of itunes in both systems
I use my ipod to play the library but its not the best solution (i lost my library in ipod twice because I confused from what os was synchronized)

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
Amalgamate the two iTunes libraries. Then load iTunes and hold down the Option/Alt ⌥ key and then choose "Choose Library" and then point both copies of iTunes to use the combined iTunes library.

  • HT1329 Moving movies and tv shows to new computer.

If I move my iTunes library to another computer using my iPod in disk mode, will it move my movies and tv shows as well? Any help would be appreciated.

They should be under the same iTunes folder as your music, in 'TV Shows' and 'Movies' sub-folders - you can find the exact location by doing 'get-info' (control-I) on one of them and the file location should be shown on the bottom of the Summary tab, or just right-click on a film or tv show and select 'Show In Windows Explorer' from the pop-up.
You can then copy them to a CD, DVD, flash drive or external drive and copy them onto your new computer and into iTunes (films and TV shows can be copied to a DVD for backup purposes but you won't be able to play them in a normal DVD player). If you have a wifi network in your house you might also be able to copy them via home sharing over your network (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527), but depending on how many films and tv shows there are it might be quicker via a disk or external/flash drive.

  • Moving library from external HD to new computer

I currently use iPhoto 5.0.4 on my iBook. The entire library has been backed up onto an external hard drive. I intend to get a new computer (probably an iMac) soon, and I will want to move the entire library onto the new computer, either from the external HD or the iBook itself.
Since the new computer's library will be empty, is it possible to just copy the existing "iPhoto Library" folder onto the new computer in the Pictures folder? (I'm assuming there's a Pictures folder.) Will iPhoto '09 handle/convert it as necessary or will there be a follow-up step? Do I also need to copy the com.apple.iphoto.plist file?
If the answer to the first question is no, what do I need to do to maintain the integrity of the library as it's set up? I am aware film rolls will be converted to Events, but don't know if the film rolls will stay in place if I simply use an import command to bring in the entire library.

Since the new computer's library will be empty, is it possible to just copy the existing "iPhoto Library" folder onto the new computer in the Pictures folder?
Yes. That's the recommended method. When iPhoto is launched it will look in the Pictures folder, open and convert the library to the new format. Just be sure to have a backup copy of the older library version just in case.
If you have any film rolls that are identified by Roll #xx they will be converted to an event with the illuminating titled of "untitled event". So if you get the chance, rename those rolls to a description that will describe the contents so the new events will have the same name.

  • Advice for moving to, and updating Aperture on, new computer?

I am moving to a new MacBook Pro with Retina Display, from a 6-year-old MacBook Pro. I'm looking for tips to make the transition smoother.
I will be upgrading to the newest version of Aperture. I currently have Aperture 3.4.5. Everything is all on my laptop. The Aperture file is 938 MB, and is SLOW! It's barely usable as it is.
I will be using TimeCapsule to transfer files. My current OS is 10.7.5.
Should I update Aperture before I move it? Should I move it, and then update it? Should I (somehow!) "disconnect" the files from the program and then reconnect them after they are transferred?
I'd like to make this transition as painless as possible!
Thanks for any advice you can give me.

    1. You can't update Aperture past 3.4.5 from 10.8.5 or earlier. You need to move it and then perform the update.
    2. See #1.
    3. No. Just keep a backup of them.
    4. If you got Aperture from a DVD and the new computer's running Yosemite, you'll probably need to contact Apple to perform the update.

  • My computer crashed.  I want to retrieve my library and transfer to my new computer.  How do I do this?  Can I salvage my library?

My old computer crashed.  I have not been able to add any tunes to my iPod because my entire library was on my old "dead" computer.  Can I salvage my library and put it on my new laptop?  How do I do this?

You can download purchased items from I tunes. Other music like from ripped CD's will be gone unless you backed them up.

  • Moving Firefox and Thunderbird to a new computer

I'm getting a new (Windows 8.1) computer. I want to be able to use Firefox and Thunderbird just as I left them on the old (Windows 7) computer. Is this the right way to do it:
    1. Backup both (to a removable disk) on the old computer with Mozbackup.
    2. Download and install both on the new computer. Download and install Mozbackup of the new computer.
    3. Restore from the removable disk using Mozbackup on the new computer.
    Is this the right idea?

Sync is entirely different than using Mozbackup. Plus, Sync isn't available for Thunderbird.

  • I want to transfer my library and all of the settings and playlists to my new computer

I am interested in moving my entire library from one PC to another.  I want to keep all of my playlists and settings (ratings) so I don't have to do them again.  I have an external drive and have followed all of the steps from itunes four seperate times.  I can move the library, but none of the settings or playlist transfer.

This forum is for questions from those managing sites on iTunes U, Apple's service for colleges and universities to post educational material in the iTunes Store. You'll be most likely to get help with this issue if you ask in the general iTunes for Windows forums.

I have iTunes on my PC and want to move it all over to my Mac. How do I do this? I read the info about using my iPod to move the library from one computer to another, but it does not mention about moving the playlists. Do those get "lost" ?

  • Moving LR and pics to a new computer/HD, most efficient/painless way...

Hello people of the Adobe LR forum!
The primary HD on my computer is crapping out (after only 6 mos!), and it's the same HD in which all my pictures reside as well as my LR install.
What is the recommend way to transfer my images and all of my precious LR metadata image develop information to another HD? All of my pictures are in one big catalogue.
I read through the Help but couldn't really find anything that clearly addressed this.
If I install LR on a new primary HD, copy over the folders of images, and then open of my catalogue, will that work? Is it critical that my .lrcat file and "Lightroom" folder remain in the same relative file location to the RAW pictures/folders?
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Minh

Yes, you can copy everything directly over and it will work. It is time consuming if you have a large library, but not at all painful. To avoid "finding" your photos in Lr later you will want to keep the folder structure the same.
