Moving library from one computer to another, music on external hard drive

Purchased 60GB iPod and imported approx. 50 GB of music into the library/iPod on Laptop 1. The music sits on an external hard drive (100mb). Laptop 1 only has 20gb drive. Everything was working fine, was able to import CD's listen to music everything that an iPod owner can do.
Laptop 1 no longer recongnizes the music in the folders on the external hard drive. It sees the music folders (titles) but when you click on the folder it is empty- no songs inside the folder.
Laptop 2 - hook up the external hard drive to it. Can see the music/songs within the folders. So laptop 1 can't see the music, yet laptop 2 can.
The iTunes music library is sitting on laptop 1 - how do I get the library over to laptop 2? I can not use the iPod as a hard drive, since the iPod will try to go to the music folder (external)and get the music so it can "transfer" to laptop 2. When I put the iPod into "hard drive" mode it goes to the external hard drive and can't find the music/songs. It does not see the music within the folders.
Both laptop 1 and 2 have 20gb hard drives. The external hard drive is 80gb, with only 23gb still available. I just upgraded laptop 1 from iTunes 5.0 to 7.0. I could use the new functionality to back up onto CD/DVD IF it could see the music/songs on the external hard drive.
All the documentation I've read would work for me IF laptop 1 recognized the music/songs on the external drive. Since it does not does anyone have some ideas to help me get the iPod library from laptop 1 to laptop 2, not using the iPod as the hard drive?
Thank you for any input.

I've got the same type question. Is it possible to transfer my purchased songs from a computer at work via a flash drive? The firewall at work will not allow me to share files with my home computer, however, the computers at work download the songs I buy in about 15 seconds, my slow a** dial up at home takes over 15 minutes per song. I think this is still considered stealing, but I'm not sharing the songs with anyone, I just want to download them at work, then transfer them to my main home computer iTunes library.

  • Moving Library from one computer to another

    Hi,
I know I can share my library from one computer to another via a network, which I am doing. My issue is that I cannot do anything with the music on the computer that is sharing. I am wondering if there is a way to get the entire library from one computer to another. I have a Mac and a PC. I would like my library on both systems instead of just one. I need to be able to update ipods, create playlists, burn music etc... from both computers. Is that possible?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Transferring external iTune library from one computer to another

I am having great difficulty in changing my external iTunes library from my old MBP laptop to my new iMac 5k.
My entire iTunes library is stored on an external drive and can be accessed directly with my MBP. When I started up iTunes on my new iMac, it created a new empty library in the MUSIC folder. What I want to do is connect my new iMac to the external library directly. I can see it when I turn on HOME SHARING but only when iTunes is running on my MBP, which is useless since my MBP will now be seldom used. I have of course on the iMac, changed the library location in the advanced preferences to the external location, to no avail. I do not want to keep any media files on the iMac for capacity reasons.
To compound the problem, I cannot seem to sync my new iPhone 6+ to the original external library, only the new empty one!
Surely this ought to be a simple job, transferring an external iTunes library from one computer to another! Am I missing something obvious here?

Wow, what a quick response! Thanks, Limnos. I guess it was bleeding' obvious, and I should have thought of it before. Such a simple solution!
On a related matter, I also have just realised that the iTunes iOS backups are saved on the internal computer drive in a folder called MOBILESYNC rather than on an external drive, thus chewing up a lot of capacity on my SSD. Others reading this response may be interested to know that it is easy to have iTunes save the iOS backups to any external drive using a symbolic link in this directory. Go to

However, note that iBooks will NOT let you use this work-around, pathetic app that it is.

  • Moving Events and Projects from one location to another on the same hard drive.

    Hello.
I've searched in the FCP X User Manual, on this forum and in Google, but have found no explanation of how to do this, so I'm posting this here in hopes that someone in our community will be able to help.
I've previously stored my FCP X Events and Projects folders on an external 3TB hard drive, because there is more room on it than on the internal 1TB hard drive, but, since then, I've worked with other media apps, for video, photography and audio, the files for which are also stored on the external hard drive, and this has created a bit of clutter with no folder structure to keep it tidy.
I like an organised file structure on my system, to keep it uncluttered, easy to navigate and efficient to use, so I put all the files for my photography, video and audio apps into their own folders, which are, in turn, stored in their appropriate folders for Audio, Photography and Video, and those three folders are stored in a folder called Media, and then I directed each app to its own files.
The only app with which this has been a problem is FCP X. While there is a way of relocating projects and events from within FCP X, it allows the user to move them from one hard drive to another, and not, as I want, from one place to another on the same hard drive.
I'm not sure if it matters, but perhaps it's relevant to mention before the next paragraph that the files that had previously been imported as events are, to save hard-drive space, stored in the events folder as shortcuts to the original files, which are stored elsewhere on the drive, rather than as duplicates of those files.
In Finder, I copied the Events and Projects folders to their intended new locations and tried in the app to link the events and projects to their new Finder location. It seemed to have worked, until I moved the original folders to the Trash. On re-opening FCP X, it was clear that the linking hadn't worked. I returned the original folders from the Trash to their original location, but that didn't entirely reverse the problem. I noticed also that, in the original and duplicated Events folders, the shortcuts had lost their links to the original files stored elswehere on the drive.
Fortunately I had run a backup before starting, so I restored the original folders and the app from the backup, and all was back to normal.
I'd be grateful if anyone could advise me on whether or not it's possible to move FCP X events and projects from one place to another on the same hard drive with the app's compliance.
    Thank you.

  • Moving music library from one computer to another

I need to rephrase my question: Is there a way to transfer my itunes library from one computer (that is being discarded) to my new computer that already has an itunes library on it? we have a new computer that my son put his library on, but we want to combine our libraries and use just the one computer to sync our music on each of our ipods. Thanks.

You can copy the music directly from the iPods. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Do I have to be on the internet to import library from one computer to another ?

Do I have to be on the internet to import library from one PC to another ?

What library? Do you mean you iTunes Library? If so, then no, you don't have to be on the Internet. You only have to copy the library to an external disk, then restore it on the other computer.
Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
    Also, see:
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
Note if you have iOS devices and haven't moved your contacts and calendar items across then you should create one dummy entry of each in your new profile and iTunes should  merge the existing data from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library or a backup then then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Transfering itunes library from one computer to another

Can you transfer / copy itunes and all songs in library from one PC to another PC (only one IPOD in use

I am having problems trasferring my itunes library from my PC to my laptop. I transferred all the downloaded music, "MY MUSIC" from one computer to the other, and the laptop's itunes picked those songs up. When I connected my ipod to my lap top, when selecting "transfer purchased music", itunes only imports the music that I have purchased at the itunes store. ** What I can't get imported to my laptop are the 500 CDs (5000 songs) that I downloaded onto my PC's itunes.

  • Getting iTunes Library from one computer to another

I recently got s a new computer so my sister was given my old one. I'd like to know teh easiest way to transfer iTunes from one computer to another. I have to do this twice, once from my old to my new, and from her old to my old.
    thanks for the help

WHat you need to do, so everything is easy, is first consolidate the library in iTunes. What this does is takes every song currently listed in iTunes and COPY"S it to the My Mucis/iTUnes/iTunes Music folder.
Once this is done you will copy the "iTUnes" folder to an external harddrive. this folder contains the important
"iTunes Library" file with the rating, playcount, playlist and the "iTunes Music" folder with your songs.
This is all covered at this link using an iPod to transfer (You can still use this artical for an external drive) http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300173

  • Moving photoshop from one computer to another

i am moving Photoshop - creative design suite 5.5 from one computer to another.  It has already been uninstalled from this computer.  the install program is asking the upgrade code.  the challenge code will be told when someone answers.

You have not explained your issue very clearly.  What problem are you having installing CS5.5 on another machine?
If CS5.5 was an upgrade from a previous version you purchased you will need the serial number for the previous version in order to confirm that the upgrade is valid.

    HI,
Can anyone offer advice for moving Itunes from one laptop to another? The original laptop that has my itunes on it, has broke, it froze and will not operate. Rather that lose all my purchased music and playlists i would like to swap it to another laptop. Can anyone advise if this will be possible and how to do it? Both laptops have windows XP installed
    thanks

    Hi
I am having a similar problem- when I record from Itunes to a cd it only works in "Data cd" format in the advanced tab. That's okay, but when I re-insert the cd and try to import it, it doesn't show anything- it plays in Itunes okay. There aren't any little boxes to check for selecting any songs and if I try to use the import function, it shows as blank.(file type shows as .txt) I am using Itunes 6- would Itunes 7 help this?
thanks- I have a lot of music to transfer and this is a problem.
