Moving Library To A New Computer

How do I move my Itunes Library from one computer to another while keeping all playlists and tags intact? Keep in mind that the computer with the music is running itunes 7.5 and the computer I would like to move it to is running itunes 8.0.2. Also, the music files are currently on an external hard drive and i'd like to keep them on that same external hard drive with the new computer. Can someone please help??? Thanks so much

Did you ever get the answer to your question here? Or have you figured out a solution? I just bought a new MacBook for my wife, and I would like to move her library from her old PC to the new MacBook. I know how to copy the music, I just don't want to lose all the playlists, etc.

I have a new computer running Windows 7, going through the fun of moving my itunes library, the old PC DVD drive keeps crashing mid burn, so wondering if the possibility is there to reinstall the library from the Western Digital external backup device I had on the old computer, I sort of think it should be easy to point itunes to that device as the backup device and then reinstall. Is it as simple as that? Has anyone else done this as it is really like moving the files via an ipod as a hard disk?

You can de-authorise your old computer and authorise the new one at any time.
In fact they can both be authorised at the same time if you like.
You are allowed to have 5 computers authorised at any one time.

Moving a library to a new computer when you don't have the old computer

Hi,
I want to set up my ipod library on a new computer but I don't have the old one. Is this possible?
I used my work computer to set up my ipod mini and have since changed jobs. I only have the ipod and want to associate my new work computer with the library that exists on the ipod mini.
I can't seem to find any information that deals with this situation. Any ideas/help?

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Due to a divorce all my music is on my iTunes and iPod. I had to buy a new computer and want to transfer my Library to the new computer. How can I do this without using an external drive and use new computer just like I do the old one? Thanks.

I dont want to have to use an external drive every time I want to listen to my music. How can I do this and have the same basic iTunes setup as before? HELP!

You might consider itunes match for moving CDs you've copied into your itunes library if you dont have a way to use home sharing.
iTunes match is an optional service offered by apple that costs about $25 a year. It scans your music library and if it finds music that is already in apple's itunes catalog it'll automatically "unlock"/"store" these in the cloud for you. Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings: Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive. Open iTunes and immediately hold down the Option (alt) key (shift on Windows), then guide it to the iTunes Library.itl file in the moved iTunes folder.

I have three versions of itunes backed up between 2 different external hard drives and a macbook pro. I recently got a new macbook pro and want to consolidate all music into one library on my new computer. How can I do this?

Because each library is named "iTunes Music" anytime I go to bring one library on to the same external harddrive as another it asks me if I want to REPLACE one library with the other. I don't want to do this because each file has different variations of music files. Ideally, I'd like all three "iTunes Music" music files to live on the same computer or at least the same external harddrive. Thanks for the help!

If you had backed up and restored your library properly you should have ended up with the playlists too. Did you import the media folder from the backup drive into a new library rather than restoring the entire iTunes folder?

I've tried Home Sharing but it doesn't allow me to transfer my old library to my new computer, it just allows me to listen to the songs from it. I recenlty bought a new computer, a Windows one and my old computer was a Mac. I am trying to move my itunes library to my new computer, however, I do not know how to do this. I downloaded itunes on my new HP and I have logged in to itunes and have authorized this computer on the account. I cannot seem to find any of my songs or how to bring them up in my itunes account. It depends on what you mean by "died".
If the old computer is a Mac, you can try starting it up in "Target Disk Mode" - it doesn't attempt to start up like a computer, it pretends to be an external hard drive so it might work even if your old computer still has power (even if it's otherwise unusable). You then use a firewire cable (or or firewire to thunderbolt adapter) to plug the old computer into the new one, and can copy the music off the old hard drive.

Or, if you're handy with a screwdriver, open up the old computer and take the old hard drive out. How easy that is depends on what model computer it is. You can then pop the hard drive into an "external enclosure" (about $20 from any computer parts store), plug that into your new computer's USB port and copy away - and you even get to keep using the old hard drive as an external hard drive. But that's assuming it really is the computer that "died" and not the hard drive itself.
Finally, if it's the hard drive in the old computer that died, but the computer itself is still good, you can try using a utility like DiskWarrior or TechTools Pro to try to recover the old hard drive, then use one of the above methods.
