Moving Lightroom to Laptop

If I never had Lightroom on my laptop, only on my desktop, and I'm purchasing an upgrade from Lightroom3 to 4 on my desktop....can I still install just Lightroom 4 on my laptop for my travels? I understand I cannot use both at the same time. But, I'm leaving the country for several months, and I'd like LIghtroom 4. I just hate to buy the upgrade if it's not going to work on my laptop.

Yes I’m sure it will work. The serial number will cover two installations. The upgrade is in fact the full product; you simply have to confirm your ownership of LR3. So it may be best to install first on the desktop and then add for the first time to the laptop.

I am moving lightroom to a new computer. The   installed program is refusing my serial number. What to I do?

Then all I can suggest is that you double check your serial number. If you registered your software you can check your account on Adobe and double check to make sure you have the number right.

  • Moving lightroom to a new laptop

Hi all im looking to buy a new laptop and i want to move lightroom to the new one is there any way to do this

Yes. Uninstall Lightroom on your old machine and Install Lightroom on the new laptop.
Uninstalling won't delete your catalog files.
Then copy your catalog files (.lrcat, .lrdata) to your new laptop.
By default the files are located in a folder called Lightroom in your Pictures Folder.

    Q. How to permanently delete folders and pics from laptop hard drive after exporting to external hard drive? I need laptop disk space!

Instead of exporting, move the photos to the external HD by moving them in your operating system and then reconnecting in Lightroom.

  • Workflow question: moving photos from laptop to external in same catalog

    Hi,
I was hoping to change my workflow a bit and would appreciate some advice. Currently, I do all work on my Macbook attached to an external monitor, keyboard and firewire external drive. I have a single catalog that encompasses all photos on that external. New photos go from CF card to an 'unfiled' directory on the external. After keywording, rating, deleting and processing, those files get moved to the appropriate folder (people/places/things with their subdirectories).
I would like instead to load photos directly to the Macbook hard drive and have that be the 'unfiled' directory. When I'm done with the above workflow, I would then connect the external and, ideally, move the photos directly to those folders (within Lightroom). I know I can do this by running separate catalogs and doing an export/import function. I was hoping to be able to do this as seamlessly as I do now. Is it possible to do all of this within the one 'main' catalog that serves both the Macbook hard drive as the 'unfiled' directory and all other folders on the external? By the way, that catalog file currently resides on the external.
    Thanks!
    E

    Eric-
    Thanks for the post.
What I do now as far as organization is to dump the photos into directories based on location (ie state/city) or, more importantly, kids name/year/month. I would prefer to keep that level of organization in addition to my keywords.
I'm also realizing it's pretty stupid for me to keep the catalog file on the external. I'll move it to the Macbook now (I can just do that with the finder, right?) and am wondering, can I comfortably run the one catalog with it pointing to a 'laptop' folder when not connected to the external (and show the 'external drive folders' in red) and then have it properly find and read the folders on the external when reattached??
    Thanks again,
    E

  • Moving photos from laptop to external hard drive

I have many photos on my laptop and have a catalog set up through Lightroom 3.5.  I decided the best way to store the photos is to keep them on an external hard drive so that I may work on them easily from any computer on my network. (laptop is frequently shut off)   Is there a way to maintain /import/export/ edit the current catalog so that it works with the photos on the external drive? I would really hate to have to do the catalog with all the keywords all over again.

You can copy or move the catalog file (*.LRCAT) to the external HD by using your operating system (Windows or Mac Finder). Then, once moved, double-click on it to open it. All your catalog information (keywords, other metadata, edits) will be available.
The only concern (for Windows users, I have no idea if this is true for Mac) is that the external HD must have the same letter on each computer you attach it to. In other words, if it is drive E: on your computer today, it must be drive E: on all computers. Changing drive letters is relatively easy in Windows; if you need to know how to do that, let us know.

  • Professional workflow lightroom and laptop

Has anyone established a workflow for jobs using new lightroom catalogues for each shoot on a laptop and returning to the studio to download the new catalogues on the "home base" computer? This has been my procedure but it's time to clean up the home base computer and there are a bewildering number of Lightroom catalogues that I want to coordinate and store on my internal RAID array. I guess I could establish a master Lightroom catalogue and keep each job as a collection? Has anyone else successfully dealt with this situation? Obviously we can't keep the full Lightroom catalogue on a laptop. Thanks John Peden

Depends on what you mean by "Obviously we can't keep the full Lightroom catalogue on a laptop."
If you mean the original files, previews and catalog, then no, it won't really work.
If you mean just the catalog and previews, then keeping them on a portable device is very doable. Heck, you can get a 16GB USB stick for $70 these days, and that will hold a plenty large catalog.
Just put your originals on the RAID drive, where both your laptop and your desktop systems can see them via a share.
Keep your catalogs on a portable drive that you can move between laptop and desktop. Have the catalogs always replicate the folder structure of the originals, and if you actually need access to an original, just point LR to the right place to find that photo.
One thing you NEVER want to do is to keep reimporting into different catalogs... if you have more than one catalog referencing the same original then you need to find the catalog that is correct and cleanup the rest. Lightroom offers very clean and good facilities for moving stuff between catalogs, you just need to remember to delete the items from a catalog when you are moving them to a different catalog.

  • 2-3 old ipod touch is no longer syncing to itunes library, which was recently moved to new laptop.

Recently moved my library of music, audiobooks, and podcasts to new laptop with Windows 8, at which time I upgraded my itunes software as well. My 2-3 year old ipod touch is no longer syncing properly. Audiobooks and podcasts are fine (after much effort), but all of two songs out of an extensive music library are the only ones syncing. I see them in my library on the new computer and have managed to sync them to my iphone 5 as well. Ipod touch appears to have ample file storage space left. What gives? Is the i-pod touch already useless with the latest Itunes software? Operator error? Hardware problem? I don't know what to think. Have been using ipods for years without this issue.

  • Problems Installing trial Lightroom on laptop w/Vista

    Hello,
I just purchased a new laptop and I downloaded the trial version of Lightroom.  I saved the exe file to my desktop.  I am now attempting to extract it.  I am trying to extract to c:Program Files, but receive the following message:
" A problem occured while extracting some files.  Check available space on your computer and the write privileges on the destination folder."
Does anyone know if it cannot go in this file, where it should be put?  I know I have available space on my hard drive - I checked - available space is 250GB.  Any help you can give is very appreciated!  Thanks

You should never extract to "C:\Program Files". Ideally, you extract
to a temporary directory, and then run the extracted installer from
    there.

Ah, but have you checked the write privileges of the destination
folder (the other half of the message)?
Try again, but extract to a temp directory, and run the installer from there.

  • Moving lightroom library onto new PC

    Hi there
I have an extensive lightroom library on my laptop and have just bought a new PC operating Windows Vista as my laptop was out of hard disk. I have installed Lightroom 1.3 onto the new PC and now want to move my existing library in. I have backed up my existing library onto a separate external hard drive, and then connected this to the new PC. For some reason although my laptop runs the old library off the external hard drive with no problem the new PC will not do this and says there are no photos in the library when I open lightroom off the external hard drive.
Any ideas how to get my pictures onto the new machine? I don't want 2 libraries! Both machines are running 1.3.
    Thanks!
    Jenni

The new PC is probably opening a default library. Look at the Preferences and set them so you're asked to choose which library to open.

  • Syncing Lightroom between laptop and desktop

I  did large, two day studio shoot last week.
I do the majority of  my work on my desktop, and for the first time I used a laptop for this  shoot.
I used an exteranl hard drive that I plugged into the laptop, and I kept my catalog and all my images on that external hard drive. I shot tethered directing into Lightroom. I did a little  work at the shoot, changing things in the develop module, cropping, and  adding metadata.
Now, I'm at home, I've got my external hard  drive still plugged into my laptop, and on my  laptop I selected all my images and chose 'Save Metadata to file'  (command S) so all my changes would transfer.
A window popped up that said 'One or more of these  photos has been changed in an external application. Should Lightroom  overwrite the Settings on disk??' I then have the option of hitting  'cancel' or 'Overwrite Settings'.
I'm confused by this as I have  only amended these images in Lightroom. If I say 'Overwrite Settings',  will I loose information? For example, every image has been cropped, but  I would like to be able to retain access to the full image, and I'm  nervous if I hit overwrite settings I'll lose this.
    Am I being crazy?
    Ellen

    Ellen,
This is a long-standing bug that seems to get better but never completely go away.  There is probably one or two images that LR "thinks" have been changed from somewhere outside of LR and when you select all images it is just telling you that at least one is in this state.  Unfortunately there is no way I know of to sort or automatically isolate images with potential metadata conflicts except to browse the grid display looking for conflicting icons.
I usually select less than all (say 40 or 50 at a time) and keep saving until I isolate the image or images that is in question such that I save data to all the other images that are not in conflict first, then attack the error images one at at time.  In all cases though, I end up overwriting the data since I trust the database of LR to have stored the most correct data.  I just want to know what images were at risk so I can review them immediately after overwriting the data to make sure indeed they are alright.  I generally use a temporary quick collection to isolate them.
The good news is I have never had a result that required me to go back in and re-develop an image.  The bad news is I still am not comfortable hitting "overwrite" after selecting all images and just letting it rip.  Hmmm ...

  • Moving Lightroom Library & database

I have been using Lightroom 1.0 on my laptop, with the library & ldrb file held on an external hard drive. The external drive was set as drive I on the laptop.
I now want to use that library on my pc, have added the external HD to pc & configed as drive I. When trying to open that library from Lightroom on the pc I am getting the following error message:
    Runtime Error:
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\Lightroom\Lightroom.exe
    Abnormal Program Error
If I open an existing Lightroom library on the pc it opens OK.
Advice on how to be able to use the Library on the external hard drive on the pc would be apperciated.
Both Laptop & pc Are using WinXP Pro.
    Many thanks
    Tom

Tom - sorry to read that you are still having difficulties. As I said previously, this is exactly the same setup that I have and with me it runs perfectly. I would possibly suggest that you plug-in your EHD to the PC but DO NOT open LR. Then via explorer locate the EHD's lrdb file. By double-clicking on this LR should open - if not then it could be that the file is corrupt. I can't think of anything else to suggest - sorry.
Edit: Should just add that I can't help feeling that your problem is somehow related to you having re-assigned the drive letter as otherwise our setup is the same as previously mentioned.

  • Moving Lightroom to a new computer

This question arises from my use of Lightroom, but the answer might apply to all licensed Adobe products. I have CS2, Elements 4, and Lightroom for the MAC.
I have just acquired an Intel-based iMac running OS 10.5.1. I want to move all my photography applications to the new computer. What is the best method, considering that I am moving them from a PowerPC processor system (Powerbook G4) to an Intel iMac?
Should I reinstall from scratch? Is there some restriction on having it on two computers? If so, I want each program on my new computer and am willing to remove it from the old one. Can I move the .app file from one computer to the new one, or must I re-install?

    Robert-
I would first backup everything and then launch "Migration Assistant" from your Utilities folder, and launch the PPC in Target mode (hold down the T key on boot)- it's easy from there.
This should work fine on your new *Mac* [MAC stands for something else]. You could E-mail me for any Mac advice; post here for LR stuff. [email protected]
I don't know if your version of Elements or CS2 are Universal (meaning they will run on both PPC and Intel chips) or not, but give it a go, as I suspect they are. If not, just delete and install fresh.
