Moving Mail 5.2 from OSX 10.7.4 to OSX 10.8.2

I ugraded to a new iMac from my MacPro. My MacPro was using Mail 5.2, the new iMac has the new Mail (since it'snot set up yet I can't access the version number).
I can't figure out how to move all my email/folders/tags etc. to the new computer. I copied the [user]/library/mail folder and replaced the empty folder on my iMac with the one from my MacPro . Upon opening Mail on the iMac it behaves as if no info is there, prompts me to start from scratch with a new account.
Please help.

It's version 6.2 in Mountain Lion.
In Mail menu you need to File>Import Mailboxes and navigate to the Mail folder on your MacPro. The iMac and the MacPro should be connected via firewire and the MacPro in target disk mode.

  • Should cancelled mailbox moves result in any moved mail data removed from target server?

I was moving mailboxes from 1 DB to another. 3 out of 120 were left running for 12 hours; they were the biggest ones and it was very slow to process the items. There were also reports of slowness on the server so I had no choice but to cancel the moves.
My question is should cancelled mailbox moves result in any moved mail data being removed from the target database? It doesn't appear that my disk as increased in space again so I'm wondering if it's there as whitespace maybe? There is an event logged to say
the mailbox has been deleted from the target.
Would appreciate if someone can clear this up and possibly explain exactly what occurs during this type of scenario.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
Thank you for your kindly remind.
In Exchange 2000, 2003 and 2007 mailboxes become unavailable during movement, when a mailbox move takes place, the mailbox isn't actually moved, it's just copied to the destination location. Once that copy has finished, AD is updated to point to the new location
and the old mailbox is deleted from the source EDB file.
The most different between Exchange 2010 and legacy version in move mailbox is that allows end-users to be online in their email accounts. On completing the move users just needs to reopen their Outlook clients.
Mailbox Move Requests are a new feature set of Exchange 2010 and requires running a series of Cmdlets to perform asynchronous online mailbox moves with the help of a service agent called Mailbox Replication Service (MRS). MRS is available on all Exchange 2010
    Client Access Servers.

  • What is the best way to migrate mail from OSX 10.4.11 (Tiger) to OSX 10.7 (Lion)

    Greetings,
Does anyone have experience migrating mail boxes from OSX 10.4 to OSX 10.7?
I have an old 1.5 Ghz PowerPC G4 laptop with a lot of email (about 8 years worth). I just purchased a new Mac Mini with OSX 10.7 Lion and I'd like to migrate 2 groups of files, mail and photos. I figure the mail might be the most difficult, hence this request for information.
I have read where you can run a migration assistant for OS 10.5 and 10.6 to OSX 10.7 but there are only a few articles about the earlier OS.
Also, I would like to migrate ONLY the mail box into an existing user account. I would rather not migrate older files and applications that I have on the older PC.
Can anyone point me to articles about doing this?
    Thank you,
    Tim Kern

    Hi Linc,
    Thank you for yout suggestion.
Export the import makes sense. Do you know of any "How to..." articles for exporting from Tiger?
    Thanks again,

  • I am having trouble moving mail and and firefox profiles to Macbook from Powerbook

I just inherited a cool late 2008 aluminum Macbook with Lion.  But I can't seem to get my Mail to move over or my Firefox preferences.  I tried the steps for moving mail:  copying and pasting the keychain, mail and mail preferences files.  Nothing happened. I've started now to set up the old way (ie setting up the accounts as if they were new) but know this is not a good idea.
Trying to get something to work, I tried to move over my Firefox profile by copying the file into the same place on the new computer as old. Nothing.
In both Mail and Firefox, I can see the new files, but they aren't being read.
Stupidly, I did not copy the old files before I pasted the new.
Should I just start over and reload Lion??
    I'm so frustrated!
    Thanks for any help.
    Anne

I also see that it seems to be moving all of the mail over from my gmail account.  I didn't mean to move everything out of gmail to this computer!  Now what do I do??

  • Moving mail from Outlook Express to iMac

I've seen postings regarding moving mail over to Entourage and eventually the Mac Mail program. However, I'd like to keep using my Outlook Express through my ISP (comcast). Is this not possible if I'm using an iMac? I haven't bought the iMac yet because I'm afraid of losing all my saved emails, plus having to change my email address from a comcast.net account to mac.com would be a nightmare. Can anyone shed some light on this? Thanks!

  • Problem moving Mail from old to new iMac

I followed instructions about moving Mail--with all mail folders and old emails intact--from my old PowerPC iMac to my new Intel 3.20 MHz iMac. I copied the folder "Mail" inside my user library and the "plist" file from Preferences onto my thumb drive from the old computer, then uploaded these files onto the new one. I was able to easily replace the "plist" file with the onscreen prompt (Do you want to replace?), but the Mail folder went into the Library folder as a duplicate only. So, I tried to delete the original and unused Mail folder, but everytime I sent to the trash and empty the trash, it magically reappears, so that my old emails don't show up when I open the Mail program. I know the files are there--but how do I make my new iMac recognize them and how do I delete the empty Mail folder that was on the new computer originally to avoid confusion? Thanks for any advice you can give.

You may need to rename the copy to be simply Mail. This is best done having first removed any Mail folder on the new Mac, but this should work as well.

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps

  • Moving Mail Users from a Local Directory to Open Directory

    Hi,
We have been running a standalone mail server for a few years. We have recently upgraded to 10.5 for all of our servers. We have also been running an Open Directory server for the last year or so. Now I am trying to move my email users from the Local Directory on the Mail server to the LDAP server. Obviously we do not want to change account names, so I find I need to delete the local user and then enable the user through the LDAP. This works fine, but I need to bring the original IMAP files/folders forward.
My question is what is the best practice? I thought backing up the Mail folder in each user's Library and reimporting it would work, but it won't take the IMAP mbox (I can see all the .emlx files in the backup of the user's Mail folder).
So again, I had a user called user1 in my mail server Local directory say server1. I also have an Open Directory server2 with the same username on it. I have bound server1 to server2. I can see the server2 (OD) accounts on the server1 (mail). I then need to delete user1 from Local server1 directory in order to enable mail to user1 from the OD. This does work, but again, I need bring the mail files/folders to the new OD account on server1.
    thanks,
    mike

    Tony,
Let me check of the migration manual, thank you!
I really thought this was going to easier than this. The current accounts are IMAP, and therefore when I "hook up" the new OD account, which doesn't really need anything done on the client side because it is the same username and password and server as the current Local account. When it syncs, the old emails on the IMAP account in the user's Mail program clear since the new OD account is empty on the server.
I just really thought duplicating the Mail folder in the client's home Library would allow me to import the emails back in. I have tried highlighting the mailboxes (Inbox, and personal folders), archiving them, and then reimporting seemed to work, but I need to beat it up before I start working on live accounts. One account I did try lets me read the emails from the user, but when I try dragging them to the IMAP folders from the import folder, I get a NULL character problem on IMAP append error. NOT to chase that, but it was something else that tripped me up.
You do bring up a good point, I think the accounts were originally setup as POP and IMAP. I'll chase some ideas about that.
Let me play around, you've been great considering my awful explanation of this different situation.
    thanks again,
    mike

  • Moving Mail from Mac Pro to MB Pro

I am going to access email only on my laptop from now on. I am still rather new to Mac and need to know how to move all of my mail to the MB Pro. That means all messages, sent and received, and archived folders. Is this possible?

Since both are Intel Macs, you can do the following:
With the Mail.app quit on the Mac Pro and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place it where you'll have access to it by the MB Pro.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Copy the com.apple.mail.plist file and do the same with this file.
With the Mail.app quit on the MB Pro, place the copy of the Mail folder from the Mac Pro at Home > Library. If there is an existing Mail folder in your Library folder on the MB Pro, this will replace it.
Do the same with the com.apple.mail.plist file from the Mac Pro placing it at Home > Library > Preferences on the MB Pro.
Launch Mail on the MB Pro and all Mail.app data and settings will be identical to the Mail.app on the Mac Pro.
The only problem you may have is with Permissions but if your user short name for your Home folder/directory is the same on both Macs, this shouldn't be an issue.

  • OSX Mail not checking for new mail on wake from Sleep.

Since upgrading to 10.6.4, my iMac no longer checks for new mail when waking from sleep. I have to manually Get Mail, and then it keeps up to date as normal. RSS feeds get updated fine. I am using MobileMe mail.
Any ideas? I have restarted Mail and rebooted the computer. Nothing obvious in the logs.

I think you will find this is a product of the use of the IDLE command. When the computer is asleep, but you have not quit Mail and logged off, the MobileMe server try to contact the Mail app to "push" emails. Not finding any response from Mail, the account is logged off. Quitting Mail and relaunching should restore -- does it?
You can test this by deselecting to use IDLE in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced.
Most people, who leave Mail running, would only allow the display to sleep and not the computer.

  • Apple Mail (v6.6, Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up mail threads - why, and what can I do?

    Dear community,
I am having a weird synchronisation problem. My Mail (v6.6) on my MacBook Air (Mac OSX v10.8.5) mixes up random email threads after I read emails on my iPhone (5C).
    E. g. there is an email thread with Frank. Frank writes a new email that I read on my iPhone. Shortly after, I open Mail on my MacBook, so that Frank’s email is downloaded there as well, displayed as "read" and added to the existing thread with Frank. However, although still being named "Frank", showing the current date and reference, in fact it is an email of Fritz from two years ago, having nothing at all to do with the thread with Frank.
Synchronising with the iPhone with USB has no effect, although the emails remain correctly displayed on the iPhone. On my MacBook’s Mail, the email from Fritz keeps to exist a second time at the time and place where it is supposed to be. Frank's email that has been replaced incorrectly, seems to be lost.
I don’t have to explain how unfortunate such random email shuffling is. I shall be thankful for any support and hints. Many thanks,
    Ray Taras

Make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your
         User/Home()/Library/ Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
         User/Home()/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

  • How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?

How can I use LDAP searching from OSX Lion Server to Mozilla Thunderbird?  We have a super awesome contacts server that works great for our Mac users.  About 30% of our company are on PCs, and I would like to use the Mozilla Thunderbird mail client for them.  I see that in Thunderbird I can set up LDAP searching, and would like to have this feature point to our contacts server.  I've tried several different settings, and looked all over the web, but could not find the proper way to configure this.  Does anyone know if this can be done, or if not, would have a better suggestion?  Thank you for your time!!

try double clicking keychain acces should launch and ask if you want to install login, system, System roots
A dialog box will launch asking where to install the cert since your configuring a vpn I would put the certificate it in system.

  • Mail.app is COPYING instead of MOVING mail to folders (using IMAP)

    Hi there,
I hope I can keep this simple, I'll go by the steps leading to my propblem:
    1.
I've been using POP3 mail for a long time, mainly with Outlook on PC's and now that I have made the godly switch to Apple I've been using Mail.app for a couple months. I host my domains at GoDaddy.com and they offer decent mail servers including webmail, etc. Since I'm checking mail on multiple platforms (iPhone, iPad, MacBook and webmail) I decided to start using IMAP instead of POP3. GoDaddy set that up form me in seconds and I got IMAP working on Mail.app in no time (yes, I deleted the old POP accounts and started from zero creating new IMAP accounts).
    2.
I've learned to keep mail filing easy so I have just two folders: "Inbox" and "archive". My inbox is... well... my inbox. If a mail is in my inbox it's because it's either a brand new unread mail or it is read and I'm keeping it there because action needs to be take upon it. Once action has been taken and I want to save the mail for future reference I just archive it.  If I want to retreive mail I just make a search across all folders. Of course I also have the trash folder, sent items, junk, etc.
    3. THE PROBLEM
As seen on the subject line, Mail.app is COPYING instead of MOVING mail to the IMAP server based folders. So when I click on archive, or manualy drag a mail to the "archive" folder it places a copy there but the email is still visible in the inbox on all my devices. I have tried creating other IMAP folders and giving them different names such as "saved mail" or "old mail" and still I get the same problem. To prove the problem is on the Mail.app side I loged into my webmail and moved messages to the "archive" folder from there, and guess what... it worked. The messages did not show up in the inbox of any of my devices any more.
PLEASE PLEASE HELP.... I'm talking about three email addresses which receive tons of business related mail every day... I'm flooded in mail.
THANKS in advance for your help!
    Kinds regards,
    Willem

    Thanks wjosten,
I had already tried that. I even created a keyboard shortcut to do so. It doesn't work! As soon as I close down Mail.app and start it up again, the messages are back in the inbox.

  • Getting "Error in sieve filter" message with each incoming mail and cannot recieve or send mail to or from iCloud account apart from Apple emails!! Please help!

Since approx 7am GMT I've been getting "Error in sieve filter" message with each incoming mail, worse though, since about 12 noon I cannot recieve or send mail to or from my iCloud account apart from I've been getting  emails from Apple (ie I've just received a welcome one from Apple Support Communities...)!! I've had this account for years, never had a problem - it can't be the OSX Mail server because the problem is the same when I log directly into iCloud. I've tried sending emails from my Hotmail account to my iCloud account (a .mac) and just get undeliverable messages back. I'm really in the s**t now at work. : (  I just set up a Smart TV yesterday with a wireless dongle - that's the only thing I've done out of the ordinary. I've spoken to Sky who are my ISP and they say all's fine with them (although the router kept kicking my off the internet this morning which was strange...). Router seems fine now though.  I'm really hoping someone here can help!!
    Many thanks!!

Do you think once Apple sort this out I'll get my missing emails back?
