Moving mail to new account

How do i move my mail and accounts from an old user account to a new user account I've created?
Mac Mail Leopard 10.5.2

Use the Import command under the File Menu. Once you have identified the mailboxes you want to import, it will create a new Mailbox called Imports. There you can sort your messages out as you like. If you get the message that a folder already exists, I would use the option to keep the old as well. It clearly marks which is the old folder and which is the new.

  • Will not send mail from new account

(I don't see a category for "mail" program on the discussions.)
I have a new account, but cannot get it to send mail from it. I get the message to try a different server, but no server works.
    Thanks

    Hi Mimi,
I reported your topic to have it moved to the Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier > Mail & Address Book forum.
    It should be moved shortly.
In the meantime, it would help if you could post back with which OS version you are using (ie. OSX 10.3.9 ?) and who your ISP is (Internet Service Provider).

  • Moved User to new account.  How to connect to old Time Machine backup.

Hello.  I've just upgraded my wife's macbook pro to Mavericks.  There was an issue with the install and we couldn't launch programs.  I noticed that while logged in as Guest everything worked, so after many other futile attempts I created a new user and moved all her docs, etc. to the new user.  I've renamed her old account and changed her new one to her previous name.  All appears to work and everyone is happy.  Except Time Machine.  She now has a bcakup for an account she no longer uses and no backup for the account she does.  Is there a way to connect the new account to the old backup so as to retain all the historical data?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike

Time Machine backs up the whole computer, not just one account, so unless some hardware was changed or you erased the internal hard drive, I think Time Machine should continue to work. What are you seeing that indicates it's not backing up?
If it's indeed not working, see Pondini's excellent website for everything having to do with Time Machine: http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
One page that might be particularly applicable to your situation is: http://pondini.org/TM/19.html

    Hello,
Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
More information about reinstalling Firefox can be found [[Troubleshoot and diagnose Firefox problems#w_5-reinstall-firefox|here]].
<b>WARNING:</b> Do not run Firefox's uninstaller or use a third party remover as part of this process, because that could permanently delete your Firefox data, including but not limited to, extensions, cache, cookies, bookmarks, personal settings and saved passwords. <u>These cannot be easily recovered unless they have been backed up to an external device!</u>
Please report back to say if this helped you!
    Thank you.

  • Moving mail to new mac

I used migration assistant to move files to new mac.  Most moved just fine.  Mail appears to have moved, but there are no mailboxes showing and the mail app is empty of any mail.
Support suggested I repair the keychain, copy mail, and copy preferences.  All seemed straight forward, except the com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile had zero bytes.  There was no com.apple.mail.plist , just the one with the .lockfile extension and no contents.
Is there any way I can unlock and rebuild that file or otherwise recover my mail on the new mac?
    help

There is a way to do this manually by digging for the mbox files in your ~/Library/Mail/* folders, copying them to your new machine, and importing the data into mail.
Unless you've done something like this before, you may want to wait for someone with a less technical solution before trying my option.  But you should know that it's possible, even if it's not easy.
If you want to give it a shot, let me know and I'll write up some steps to follow.  Be forewarned, though, that it will require commands in terminal...

  • Mail app - new account won't download all the messages

    Hi,
I setup a new email account on Mail and it downloaded 250 of my emails, but then it stops at March 23rd. If I log onto yahoo, all the new emails are there and it was working fine when I was using Thunderbird.
In fact, under mail activity, if I click on get mail it says it's downloading 161 more emails, but it never displays in the inbox. And if I click on the Get Info for that mailbox, it actually shows all my new emails under "Messages on Server".
Is there a way to get the messages to be retrieved under the inbox? I've tried deleting the account and re-adding it, but it keeps stopping at the same date. I've also added two other email accounts and those downloaded fine (also POP accounts).

    Hi, Welcome!

  • Moving iTunes to new account, new disk location, exclamation marks

I have been using an iTunes storage that was copied (rsync) from one computer with one user to another computer with another user. Using ACL's I had made certain that both users could access the library and that worked.
But somehow my last couple of actions have damaged this setup and I don't know how and I don't know how to get a working setup back.
The setup normally was that ~/Music/iTunes for users was a symlink to /Users/Shared/iTunes. Thought it says shared, it is just used by that one user. I have located that on /Users/Shared because the home directories are protected with FileVault and I did not want to burden FileVault with the entire iTunes library. This worked fine.
On the laptop (which was my main iTunes workhorse) I had a rsync command to sync my iTunes stuff to a server (as backup) as Portable Home DIrectories would not sync it as it was located outside the home directory. This worked for years.
Now, instead I want to move this library to another dedicated server account (music) which is then shared to the laptop/desktops using Home Sharing. This I created and it worked. A few weeks ago I migrated from an old 10.5 Server to a new 10.6 Server and it still worked.
Now, yesterday, I decided to clean stuff up. Originally I had been using my self-compiled rsync that could handle extended attributes (from the official rsync distribution). But I noticed that some songs were not synced to the server. So, I tried Apple's own rsync and that did better, it synced all kinds of files that were missing on the server end. I used ditto and rsync to move stuff around on my machines with the goal to have the iTunes folder on /Users/Shared/iTunes owned by user music but through ACL's also accessible for other users in case I had to move stuff there from other machines.
Now, today I started up iTunes as user music on the Server and though my whole library is visible and all my playlists and smart playlists and settings are there, every song has an exclamation mark because iTunes cannot find it. If I locate the individual songs it works fine, but then iTunes cannot find the rest on the basis of that. And locating thousands of tracks by hand is not an option.
Starting over again also seems problematic. I can start again, but them I lose all my playlists and smart playlists etc.
Any tips on what might work to get this broken setup repaired?

    This solved my problem:
    - Remove rsynced iTunes directory and re-rsync from other computer
(This this not help, but maybe without it the rest would not have helped)
    - Remove iTunes Preferences
    - Restart iTunes
(Now it worked again, I had to make a few fixes)
    - Deauthorize and reauthorize computer
    - Reconnect to iTunes Store account
    - Reset preferences

  • Transfer account balance to new account

My wife inadvertently created a 2nd iTunes account, the 1st account still has a gift card balance, how can I get that credit moved to the new account.

    You cannot.
Remove your info from the new account and continue to use the old account.

  • I have Mail with 5 accounts. The problem is that one of them is constantly active, that is with the moving wheel showing a search for new mails.

I have Mail with 5 accounts. The problem is that one of them is constantly active, that is, with the moving wheel showing a search for new mails, while the others accounts are not active.

    hello
Would not take the moving wheel as indication that account is active. There could be other reasons for it. From the menu Window, choose 'connection doctor' that will show you how each account has connected. Next, from the Window menu choose 'activity veiwer' that will show you exactly what activity is causing the moving wheel.

  • Opening new user account- how can I moved mail and contacts?

I would like to open a new user account on my mac and move (or copy) a few things to the new account. I would like to move the mail including all the mails stored, the contacts, some of the folders etc. Is it possible? How can it be done?
    Thanks, Alon

No. Not the main Library folder. Make absolutely sure you are in the Home Library folder and not the main Library folder.
Your Home Library folder is hidden in Lion. To get to it, in the Finder menu, select GO and hold the option key down. Select Library in the submenu. The Finder window will open in your Home Library. This is where your user prefs are stored.
Once there, you will see the Preferences folder. Open it up, select all items within it and move them to the trash. You will need to restart in order for the new Finder preferences to be recreated.
Once you restart, then you will be back to the default preferences to the system and all applications. And yes, it will affect all settings including your Dock, just as logging into a new user. You will have to reset everything there also.
If you wish to do a selective method, instead of deleting all preferences, try deleting the one associated with your problem. Screen saver problems should be affected by the system preferences, so try deleting this:
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist.lockfile
Note that when you delete system file preferences, a restart will be required. For applications, just quit the application before trashing preference files.

  • Can't add a new account to mail

    Hello all,
Hope to get some help with this annoying and frustrating situation.
I need to create a gmail account in mail v4.5 because I'll be moving from my current location and prefer not to have to access gamil through safari.
I am prevented to get the new account to be online, no matter how many times I try to do this.
First there was an issue with mail not being able to verify gmail's certificate; I thought I overcame this by clickung on view certificate aan accepting it.
Then, all gmail account settings settings were input following gamil help pages; whether I set the account to be an IMAP (as recommended by gmail) or a POP account, mail could not get the account online: it keeps being offline.
I deleted the account just created and created a new one with the same result.
Mail gives me this alert: Logging in to the Gmail IMAP server “imap.gmail.com” failed. Make sure the user name and password you entered are correct, then click Continue. If the information isn’t correct, you cannot receive messages.
Both user name and password are correct, but useless. Nevertheless, I click on "continue" and the result is the same.
There is no problem with network; I can get online with safari, and firefox.
I just don't know what to do, and no help from google is possible, at least not for this issue; help for gmail through a browser is plentiful though, but trying to ask something that is not on the menu as set by google is totally impossible.
    Does anyone have a solution?
I'll be very thankful for any help I can get.
    Regards

That is the only one; there are no incoming and no outgoing ports to be able to set a number into a box: I don't see SMTP ports, nor SMTP-SSL ports.
Yes, you do. But you can't access them until after you first setup the account; then you get to select Mail's Preferences->Accounts->Account Information tab and use the 'Server Settings…' button to set those options. Here's a screen shot of that window:
It is sort of a vicious circle as I cannot actually setup the account completely. Nevertheless, I insisted and these are screenshots of what mail shows:
Account information is the same as shown on my previous response screenshots: POP
As you can see, I used the default ports, but the final result was exactly the same: gmail does not go online.
(BTW, I don't know why 2 gmail accounts are shown when there is only one I want to activate: I keep deleting those which do not work.)
When I try to send a message using gmail, I get the "Enter password for account...", I check "Remember this password in my keychain", click OK, and get the same again and agin; gmail stays offline.
This I read on Mail Help:
If the mail server rejects your user name and password
There can be several reasons why your user name and password aren’t accepted by a mail server.
    Try these solutions:
Make sure you’re typing your mail account password, and not your Mac OS X user account password or email service provider password (if these passwords are different).
Passwords are case-sensitive. Make sure you’re entering uppercase and lowercase characters where needed.
Verify your account name and password in Mail preferences (choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts). If your email service provider offers web mail (email access via a web browser), try using your account name and password to access web mail. If your account name and password look correct but you can’t access web mail using them, or you don’t have web mail, contact your provider to confirm the information.
I can access gmail from a browser with the same password I use in trying to set up gmail on mail, so this is not the problem.
What about the cerrtificate whose identity mail cannot verify?
Could it possibly be related to a problem with the OS in my computer?
Possibly, but without knowing what those problems were, I couldn't say with any degree of accuracy.
computer boot time too long: over 50 seconds for the apple logo to show up, then another 10 seconds for the wheel to spin; total time about 1 minute 50 seconds; this doesn't happen when booting from an external FW HD
sleep does not start when i click it; must click up to 3 times for the computer to go to sleep
mail notifications, and other default actions set by me —such as ignore when a blank CD is inserted— do not respond
beach ball spin in many applications, sometimes even in Finder; I've installed more memory a bout a week ago to a total of 8GB but beachball still happens as if nothing had changed
fonts settings keep changing; followed Kurt Lang's recommendations for keeping fonts to the minimum OS X requires, plus some that I want to use; I get them all back on
    some folders disappeared
I get "recovered file folders" after starting a new session
these conditions happen with my account and with a guest account
an over 50GB folder that I had to copy from the internal to the external FW HD on one occasion (because a back up of the internal HD would have replicated the problems on the external) gave me a totally empty folder after about one hour spent "copying" nothing at all.
I removed Mail and all its associated files, and reinstalled it from the install DVD.
Don't do that. It will not solve any problem, but it will take lots of time.
    OK, in the future.
I don't have any further information you may need.
    Again, thank you so much.

  • I deleted something and now Mail wants me to set up a new account

    hello
I don't remember exactly what happened but I was on a site that somehow opened my mail . I must have clicked on something . I noted the time it happened and went to finder and deleted everything that was created or modified at that time --days go by --(I use my eMac mainly for mail) and when I tried to open Mail on my powerbook I am welcomed and asked to start a new account . I checked the User>library>Mail and all the mailboxes and mail are still there .
I still have everything in the trash and one of the files had mail in the name so I dragged it into the hard drive thinking it would know where to go (you can tell I'm a real computer wiz;) I don't know where it went but it didn't help .
    Here is what I deleted and is in the Trash;
    lots of numbers.cache
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    isync.administrative
    isctay7186-2.wmv
    MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2
com.apple.mail.plist is just sitting on the hard drive and doesn't know where to go.
I hope to learn something here . Anything that anyone can tell me about these files would be interesting . I hope to solve this and give points to my helper

Did you re-create your account or accounts and/or import any mailboxes from the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail?
If not, quit the Mail.app and using the Finder go to Home > Library > Preferences.
Move the old com.apple.mail.plist file (that is just sitting on the hard drive and doesn't know where to go, ;-)) within the Preferences folder for your Home directory.
Since you launched the Mail.app after moving this com.apple.mail.plist file out of the Preferences folder, more than likely a new com.apple.mail.plist file has been created. If so, moving the old com.apple.mail.plist file back within your Preferences folder will replace the new preference file created.
Launch Mail and everything should be restored as before.
The com.apple.mail.plist file stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences.
The MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file is the file that tracks messages downloaded from the server for a POP type account and your settings for removing messages from the server when downloaded. This file is located within the POP account named folder (named by the user name and incoming mail server for the account) at the first level within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail and if you have multiple POP type accounts created in the Mail.app, the same file name is located within each POP account named folder.
This file isn't important and can be deleted.
When removing this file from within a POP account named folder (which should be done with the Mail.app quit), a new MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file will be created automatically by Mail when re-launching Mail and any messages already downloaded by this account that remain on the server will be downloaded again.
If you have selected to remove messages from the server when downloaded by the account (which is available at Mail > Preferences > Accounts under the Advanced tab for the account preferences), deleting this file will have no effect.
For future reference, you need to be careful about what you remove and from where unless you know the ramifications before doing so.

  • Moving to the new BT Mail system

    Hi,
I have just received an email today and it looks like I will be moving to the new BT Mail system shortly.  So I am trying to ensure that I am all set up for it, but have two related questions I have not been able to find answers to ...
    1. I do not currently use the Yahoo web-pages, but my e-mail is instead forwarded to another account where it is merged with all my other e-mail from various accounts. Will this forwarding be carried over to the new system, or must I set it up again?
    2. The T&Cs worringly says that I must look at the BT Email webpage, otherwise my account will be suspended. What is actually meant by this as there are also instructions for collecting the email via IMAP and POP for PC programs or on a mobile device. How will people using email forwarding or a separate program/mobile be affected?
    With thanks
    Andrew

  • Moving Mail, Address Book and Keychains from Old Computer to New Computer

My issue: Moving mail, address book and keychains from Panther (old machine) to Leopard (new machine). Old machine (500mh G4 power pc) will not connect directly via firewire to new machine (iMac intel). So, I have to move the files manually via a firewire hard drive.
I am looking for a document that will tell me exactly which files to move. Can someone please help me find this document? Thank you. Dale
P.S. I have no issues with installing Leopard. I only need to move the mail, address book and keychains from old to new machine. No .mac account is available.

for address book: go to your old mac, launch ab, and go to file>export and export your contacts as vcards, select all cards before that, then bring that export file to the new mac, and launch ab there, then go to file>import as vcards and you should be set as far as contacts are, but not as far as groups if you have extensive groups. that would be the safe option. the other option is to go to homefolder/library/application support/address book and move that folder to the new mac. the only question i have is... is the database structure and files the same between panther and leopard, which is why i suggest the first option of import/export of vcards.
for mail, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/mail and move that mail folder to the new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
for keychain, in your old panther go to homefolder/library/keychain, you want to bring the file that is in that folder to your new mac. make a copy of that folder, then move one copy to the same location in the new mac.
once that is done, you may have to do some more steps with mail, once you launch mail, such as importing mailboxes. let me know if that is the case.
    hope this helps
