Moving mail to new mac

I used migration assistant to move files to new mac.  Most moved just fine.  Mail appears to have moved, but there are no mailboxes showing and the mail app is empty of any mail.
Support suggested I repair the keychain, copy mail, and copy preferences.  All seemed straight forward, except the com.apple.mail.plist.lockfile had zero bytes.  There was no com.apple.mail.plist , just the one with the .lockfile extension and no contents.
Is there any way I can unlock and rebuild that file or otherwise recover my mail on the new mac?
help

There is a way to do this manually by digging for the mbox files in your ~/Library/Mail/* folders, copying them to your new machine, and importing the data into mail.
Unless you've done something like this before, you may want to wait for someone with a less technical solution before trying my option.  But you should know that it's possible, even if it's not easy.
If you want to give it a shot, let me know and I'll write up some steps to follow.  Be forewarned, though, that it will require commands in terminal...

  • Moved to a new Mac - iTunes Media horro

    Hi,
this drives me crazy: I moved to a new mac and can not get my iTunes to work.
iTunes just does not find my media files.
My old setup on a PowerMacG4 was:
folder iTunes with libraries in my home folder, but the music was on another volume
So inside the "iTunes Music Library.xml" (thats how it is named in the old iTunes) there is the entry
    <key>Music Folder</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/blabla/Musik/</string>
pointing to the folder on the volume where my media files are.
Every media file has an entry in the xml, where the key "Location" points to the exact folder the file is located, e.g.
    <key>Location</key><string>file://localhost/Volumes/blabla/Musik/Alexandra/Die%2 0Legende%20einer%20Sa%CC%88ngerin/Mein%20Freund,%20der%20Baum.MP3</string>
I used "Migration Assistant" to move data from old disks to the new mac. Having connected the old volume blabla new iTunes found the files.
Having renamed the volume blabla iTunes still found the files and replaced all Location references. Magic?
So i copied all the media to my new mac to a new location and told iTunes (prefernece location of iTunes media) where my media files are.
Does not work. It still believes the file are on volume blabla. It never looks into te files copied to the new location!
Hmmm, so i looked inside the "iTunes Library.xml": The "Music Folder" is set correctly, but the files location points to the old volume.
Doing a replace for all locations in the xml doesn't work either, probably the itl-file holds the same information?
If i start iTunes again, it ovewrites all my changes made to the xml.
Not giving up yet, because I have read that if the itl is invalid, it gets rebuild from the xml i zap the itl and start itunes again. -> no more media files in the library.
I do not understand where iTunes stores its information, why there are two Library files (itl and xml) and which one is leading.
Please: how can i get itunes to recognize my media files.
This is the worst interface I've ever seen. I only want to move my media files and iTunes just does not let me do it :-(

The iTunes Library.itl file holds the key information. The .xml file is for third party support. If you have access to a working version of the library on the old machine then you can use the process in this thread to make your split library portable. Since the media has already been copied over you would then just need to copy the library files again while putting everything into the correct layout.
If that isn't possible it may be that you can trigger iTunes into fixing your broken links. Having set the media folder to the correct path in preferences, highlight a single broken tracks and attempt to Get Info. When iTunes complains the tracks is missing use the option to locate the track. iTunes should offer to attempt to fix other broken links based on the path to this one.

  • Moving to a new mac, what is the painless way to transfer contents of one m

Moving to a new mac and I'm pretty sure about how to go about doing it but thought I'd ask. Can I connect a firewire cable from old mac to new mac, connect network wise and take the home folder from the old computer and place it in the new home folder of my new mac? will this copy all my info from my old mac to my new mac and place everything in it's appropriate folder? Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you use the built-in application called Migration Assistant to transfer you data.
The first time you start up your new Mac, a screen will prompt you as to whether you'd like to transfer your data from your old mac. At that point you start up the old mac in target mode and connect it via Firewire to the new Mac. Then just follow the directions to transfer your data.
You can also choose to do the transfer at a later time. The Migration Assistant is always available in the /Applications/Utilities folder.
I strongly recommend against simply transfering your home folder from one computer to the other.

  • Problems moving mailboxes to new Mac

I decided not to use the Migration assistant when I got my new Mac Pro - I installed all the software from scratch to make a nice clean installation. However, to move all of my mail across I simply copied the Mail and Mail Downloads folders from Library. I have the user folder and the hard drive named the same on my new Mac as on my old one.
It certainly looked like it had worked fine. But a few days on, I was trying to search for an old email which contained a font I needed, and discovered that the email was completely blank - and all others in the same mailbox were also completely blank. Oddly, the attachment was actually present in the Mail Downloads folder - but I'm concerned that the emails aren't actually there.
Fortunately the content is all still present on my old computer - so what is the best way to move all of my mail to my new Mac? Please note that I have about 4 inboxes for different email accounts, and some of my mail gets automatically moved to various mailboxes in the 'on my mac' section.

I copied the Mail and Mail Downloads folders again, and this time I also copied com.apple.mail.plist and com.apple.mail.searchhistory.plist. It now seems to be all there, I cannot spot anything missing. Are there any more files (preferences etc) that I should have copied?

    Hello, Zimmer1956.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
This sounds like iTunes may not be directed to where your music library is located.  Here are the steps that will walk you through directing iTunes to the imported iTunes library.

    hi there,
I am experiencing a similar problem.
All of a sudden my spotlight stopped working.
It did that after I have tried in many ways to make NTFS-3G work, to recognize an external HD configured in NTFS.
    I have read all below.
In Activity Monitor MDS does not show.
When I launch Spotless a big red signal shows "SPOTLIGHT IS NOT ACTIVE".
"Master Indexing Status" is in RED and shows a message "Spotlight Content Indexing is Inactive".
I have tried to backup hostconfig file, but it shows SPOTLIGHT -YES- normally.
I really don't know what to try.
    Please help.
    Thanks

  • Moving CS6 to new MAC with download product

    Hi
We have CS5 on Mac then purchased upgrade to CS6 now need to move to new Mac. Both files were down loaded from internet. How do we do this.
    Regards
    John Gamble

    Hi JOHN41057,
    Welcome to Adobe Forum.
Please download & install the CS6 version, you can the product download from
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/policy-pricing/cs6-product-downloads.html
While installing , it will ask you to insert the CS6 serial number, after that it will ask you to insert the previous version qualifying serial number, at this time you need to enter the CS5 serial number & it will be installed & activated.
You do not need to install the CS5 on the new computer, you can directly install CS6.
Please let us know if it worked.

  • Missing songs from playlists after moving to a new mac

Bought a new imac 5k. On my old Mac (Pro) I saved the library.xml file in order to save all my playlists (about 70), rather than save each individual playlist file (which would have taken too long.)
Moved the library.xml file to my imac, "added to playlist", and it brought over all my old playlists. Cool, right?
Nope. Many of them are missing songs now. I wrote down how many songs wee in each playlist on the Mac Pro before cleaning it out, and the same new playlist on my imac has a wrong/smaller song count.
Now, I have to try and figure out which ones I'm missing? Ugh. Why didn't ALL of the the sings on each playlist transfer over? Any idea how to fix this? Running Yosemite 10.10.1.

You can't install Adobe applications by copying from a backup.
Start by cleaning out all the CS apps using Adobe Cleaner Tool:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download a new installer from here:

  • Moving to a New Mac

Greetings all. I am a fairly recent convert to Mac. I got an iMac about six months ago, loved it so much I got a Macbook Air for travel. This is about the Macbook Air. I have a great installation on my iMac, including Parallels with Windows 7. All very stable. As a Windows user I would have never dreamed of getting a new pc and not doing a full clean install of the OS and all applications. It just would have been too risky.
When I got the Macbook Air I started it up and was asked if I wanted to move data and/or applications from Time Machine to this one. It really gave me pause but I figured, go ahead. In about 10 minutes Migration Assistant had moved ALL the existing applications from the iMac INCLUDING Parallels AND Windows to the Macbook Air. I was almost in shock. And Windows worked too. So did my bookkeeping application on Windows, which is a complex database application.
So why am I boring everyone with this story? Well, I have had a few unwelcome events where the Air freezes up after coming out of sleep mode. Just a few wierdnesses. As there's no real school for Mac users I thought I'd ask you if what I did is "normal operations" and if it is wise to do so. Would I have been better off to go through the whole reinstall of all the applications, including Parallels and Windows? Or is there nothing to worry about?
    Thanks for any good advice.
    GL

Thanks baltwo. That's a good article you referred me to. Basically, that's exactly what I did. So I have some confidence now that the issues probably have less to do with the install than simply minor quirks relating to sleep mode.
It amazes me how simple doing this was compared to the equivalent process with Windows! Instead of six hours invested, it only took about an hour.

  • Since moving to a new MAC Firefox asks permsion to use various font whilst loading - how can I stop this?

I moved over to a new Apple Mac using a time machine back up. Since then when ever I use Firefox it stops and asks if it's ok to use a font located on an external hardrive. How can I stop this?

I tried reloading FF but had the same problem but maybe I need to completely eradicate any trace of FF first - is there a way of doing this.
I've already moved back to Safari but there are a couple of sites I have to use that don't work properly so I have to revert to FF

  • Moving mail to new account

How do i move my mail and accounts from an old user account to a new user account I've created?
    Mac Mail Leopard 10.5.2

Use the Import command under the File Menu. Once you have identified the mailboxes you want to import, it will create a new Mailbox called Imports. There you can sort your messages out as you like. If you get the message that a folder already exists, I would use the option to keep the old as well. It clearly marks which is the old folder and which is the new.

  • Setting up i mail on new mac

I'm trying to set up a mail account with i mail but I'm not having much luck.
I usually use yahoo mail and the account provided with my ISP but would like to have a mac account too.
When I try to sign up I see the screen that tells me I'l be guided throught the setup process..
I click continue , my name is displayed in the Full Name field.
Where do I get my user name? - I haven't signed up for a .Mac Account yet so I suppose this is why I can't access this.
But if I try to set up POP or Exchange account I can't sign in and not quite sure what to do. Do I use my yahoo mail as the e mail address? Do I set u a new one?
    Puzzled but hopeful

    Hi wizbing
Not sure where you have got with this. It sounds like we have a similar situation - except I have configured my accounts. I have 3 or 4 with my ISP and I am currently using the .Mac mail on the trial basis (although will soon expire). And I have the free Yahoo one which I just leave on the browser.
Let's say for example you have BT. For me the easiest way to add my BT accounts to mail would be go to Mail, Preferences.
Click on Accounts. You get a column on the left for accounts, from memory there is a default mac one there, but I wouldn't swear to that. I have starred the info that is critical - where you need to get it right.
Click on the plus button at the bottom of the left hand column to create a new account. In the new window headed general info, you need to specifiy account type. It will probably be a POP account. For account description, you need to write something like my favourite BT account or whatever you want as this is not critical. Your full name will prob come as it does on mac, but you can change that as well to whatever you want to come up on emails that you send, eg Wizbing, or Howling Wolf, or John. Then your email address, *0870 [email protected]* whatever it is.
Click continue and move onto next window and complete the incoming server, eg pop3.bt.net (if you were using imap then you would have that as your incoming server). The user name will come up for you as it is the first bit of your email address, and then add your password which you are using for that account. Click continue, and the computer will check the connection to the pop server. If you've got something wrong it will tell you, eg if you have written popp3, it won't connect. If you've got it right, it will move onto the next window which is outgoing server. It will bring a mac one up by default, change that to smtp.bt.net, it should then bring up your user name again. I ticked the authentication box, add the password and it checks the connection to the smtp server.
You then get an account summary. Click continue and you should get conclusion a new account has been created. Flushed with your success you can then go on to create another account!
Seriously it is easy, although it took me some fiddling just because I was new to it and I happen to be using a European ISP (non-English speaking) so I was grappling with that as well. The key is to make sure you have got the two servers right, if you aren't sure, then obviously ring your provider to find them, and check it's a pop account. Sorry this has been long, but I wasn't sure how much you knew so thought it was easier to go through the whole process. I will be probably be barred from here now!

  • Importing pc outlook express contacts into mail on new mac

    Hello,
I've been looking thru the support archives and can't find anything current on this issue (archived stuff is 2009). Is there any easy way to import your contact info from pc outlook express to mail 4.5 on a new macbook pro? I'm not sure which version the outlook express is, (it's my father-in-law's machine) he just made the switch to a mac. He is not very computer savy, hence the reason I am posting the question... I have looked at o2mac and was wondering if it can be done easily without purchasing an outside application... I have a brother-in-law who is working on the problem but he is soo pc oriented that he cannot find himself around the mac without thinking in pc-mode so I'm now trying to help (I'm AM a mac person...) but not outlook! He says that when he tries to import it comes in all gobbley-gooked (his words)....
    Any help appreciated!

Install Mozilla Thunderbird onto the PC.
    http://www.mozillamessaging.com/en-US/
On the PC import whatever you need, mails, contacts from Outlook Express
From Thunderbird export contacts as LDIF. Copy the file over to your Mac and import it in Address Book.
