Moving many files to a new directory WITHOUT copying

Hello,
I'm trying to increase the efficiency of my iBook G4 by deleting all extraneous/replicated files. In addition to this, I'm trying to organize all the files that remain into sub-directories. Question: How do I move a large amount of files to a different directory without creating copies of those files? Everytime I try to execute something like this, the result is that aliases of all selected files get moved to the new directory, but the original files remain where they were. How do I get around this?
Also, any other tips about how to increase efficiency of the computer? I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 Thanks.

Hello Adam,
(In addition to Doug's excellent answer)
When using those move vs copy tips, a small green "+" appears to visually help you drag the way you meant:
- If the green "+" shows, it's a copy.
- If the green "+" doesn't show, it's a move.
"any other tips about how to increase efficiency of the computer?"
Well, hundreds, thousands, many undocumented...
- Exploring your usual keyboard shortcuts and combinations, with the Option key in addition, or with the Command key, or both, or combined with mouse clicks, holds or drags, the Control key too sometimes, quite often unveils a hidden feature that you easily remember in the future because it very often really adds a plus to your efficiency.
About shortcuts, many Apple KB articles:
- (KB article #75459) Mac OS X keyboard shortcuts
- (KB article #153415) Shortcuts for starting up
- (KB article #153412) Shortcuts for freezes
- (KB article #106567) Mac OS: Apple Pro Keyboard Shortcuts for Shut Down and Restart
- (KB article #152140) Setting custom keyboard shortcuts for applications
and one very nicely summed:
- (Dave’s Picks) Magical Macintosh Key Sequences
Try also certain combinations of
Exposé + Tab,
Command-Tab then ~/H/Q (with the ⌘ key hold down),
the right-clicking in the Dock (folders icons...),
the hold-clicking too (Finder's Dock icon),
the Control + F keys keyboard navigation (enable with control-F1),
keyboard navigation by hitting letters (or two or three letters) in menus or in Finder's column view,
etc etc etc...
Enjoy the exporation!
Mac OS X, a wealth of such features...

  • I moved by iTunes files to an external drive because I was changing computers. I then moved the files to the new computer. My iPod is not linking with the files on the computer.  What can I do?

I moved my iTunes files from my old computer to an external hard drive.  I then moved those files to the new computer. My computer and iPad are not linking up (recognizing each other?).  I installed the latest version of iTunes onto the new computer to see if that would help.  It did not--I got the message that an iPad can only be linked up with one computer and the new download would not work with this iPod.  So the iTunes' library and my iPod are not connecting, and I have no way of installing or removing new songs onto my iPad.  What should I do to correct this?

Sorry, I had a typo.  The last sentence should have read "iPod" (iPad):  So the iTunes' library and my iPod are not connecting, and I have no way of installing or removing new songs onto my iPod.  What should I do to correct this?

    Thanks.
So your source server is shadowed (well technically the source volume).
But the TARGET volume is not shadowed?
Basically there's a few ways you can do this, but they all have their downfalls:
    1) Use a workstation with the Novell Client. It will see the source as a single volume and copy the data from both primary/shadow (since the NCP view sees them as "one") and paste them to the target. Obviously file rights aren't preserved, and neither are quotas, and it can be slow since it's routing through the workstation. But it will get the DATA over.
    2) Use the miggui, but with caution. There ARE ways (not supported AFAIK). If you choose this route, I can send you some of the details via PM. It does pose a small risk in that, while you temporary expose both volumes on the Primary, (so miggui can see the data), if you make any trustee changes, it'll hose things. I think it also requires that your TARGET have a shadow setup. But my memory is old. It will get quotas/trustees, and is relatively quick. We did many migrations this way to new hardware without issue (just had to be VERY careful that nobody was changing file rights during the exposing of the volume temporarily).
    3) Use your DST to shift everything BACK to the primary and then break (disable the DST/Shadow) and use miggui so that primary -> primary (ie, there's no shadowing on source or target). Obviously you need enough free disk space which you may not have. It will get quotas/trustees though.
Others may have other ideas, but this is what I could come up with.

  • Moving dreamweaver 8 to a new computer (without CD)

I am trying to move dreamweaver 8 and the accompanying site files to a new computer, but I can't find my installation CD.  Is there a way to install the program on a new computer without the CD?  What would I need to copy?
    Any thoughts?

    No
Part of the install process is writing information to the Windoze Registry
If you know how to edit the Registry, you might be able to manually copy all of the entries from the old computer to the new computer... but do that wrong, and your new computer may stop working (and, since you clearly didn't know what the install does, I wouldn't advise that you try to manually edit the Registry)
As said... you must have a CD to install... as long as you didn't also lose your install key
If you do find a CD to borrow... make a copy and do as I advise here (I think the law allows you to make a copy, as long as you are using your own install key when you use the copied CD... but, as I am not a lawyer, you may need to verify that)

  • How to import multiple XML files into one inDesign document without copy/paste ?

I use InDesign CS6, and I have several XML files with the same structure. Only the data are different.
I created  an Indesign layout with some tagged placeholder frames on merge mode, for automated layout.
Today for each XML file I have to create a new InDesign document to import the XML. Everything works fine. Then in order to have all Indesign layouts one after the other into a single Indesign layout, I have to use the copy/paste function.
I mean for example, copy the contents of all documents to the first one. Or add pages of other documents to the first one, then delete spaces between each page.
So my question is the following:
How to repeat this process without copy/paste function, knowing that the
number of XML files could be unknown.
Thank you very much for your answer.

Yes, effectively I would like to catalogue the files into one collection so i can save as one PDF and Print as one.:)
I know I could save each AI as a pdf them then merge the pdf's together in acrobat, but I have nearly 100 files so would feel more comfortable seeing them all together before print / saving.
My concern is that if I insert them in Ai, will the file resolution reduce? and will the ai still be editable and would it update the indesign file?
    Thanks for the quick reply

  • How do I collect and organize files into a new folder without breaking the links to my media?

I'm new to premiere pro, and learned that I probably should have figured out where to organize all of my files from the beginning, but in the post production phase, I have a bunch of audio and image files sitting all over my desktop, and I'm afraid that if I move them, I'll break the links to all of my media. Files I edited in CS6 Photoshop and Audition are of special concern (considering they get automatically routed to my desktop).
Does anyone know how I can collect all of the files and media that were imported into my project, and and archive them into a folder without breaking the project's links to the original media? Perhaps there's a way to copy all of the files and move them into that folder, so that when I move the originals, I'll still maintain all of the links in the copied version?
I tried using the project manager tool, but received an "unknown error message" each time I ran it.
Any organizational insight would be much appreciated!

  • Too many files/folders in a directory poor performance

We have an XServe running 10.6.2 with a large Fibre Channel Raid from ACNC. One of the shares is used for archive and has a lot of files/folders in it and as such takes a while to display and search. Is there any way to speed this up other than the obvious of not keeping so many in one directory? I am getting resistance to breaking it up into subfolders though that obviously is the best solution. What is the level at which performance degrades? Any documentation or info on this? Thanks!

While all file systems support large numbers of files in a directory, any directory system performance degrades as the number of files increases. The actual number may vary from file system to file system (e.g. UFS, HFS+, NTFS, EXT2/3/4... the list goes on) but it's always there.
In pure technical terms, the performance starts to degrade on single-digit (typically 4 - 10) number of files since past that the directory index exceeds a single block on disk but the difference between reading one block and two isn't noticeable to the average human. In practical terms, on most direct-attached storage you'll see a performance drop at around 10,000 files. By 20,000 it's noticeable.
These numbers can be far worse over a network connection since it has to be read by the server before it can be passed over the network and re-parsed by the client.
There isn't much of an option other than to strip the directories down.

  • Sharing a set of music files among multiple Apple IDs (without copying!)

In my family, we have 4 people, all with their own Apple IDs, and all with their own PCs, iTunes libraries, etc.
I also have an extensive set of music in my iTunes library which is ripped from the family CD collection. I'd like to share that with everyone, preferably without everyone having to keep their own copy (it's about 40GB of data). Home sharing on my iTunes only seems to let me see the music on my iPod (i.e. against my Apple ID). Actually, given that I do have some songs purchased specifically against my Apple ID, I may need to share them separately from those anyway (I've never looked into the details of what I'm allowed to do as far as sharing content I've purchased - it's never been relevant until now).
Home NAS devices apparently have "iTunes Server" facilities - I assume they let you do something like this? But is there any way of doing the same with a plain old PC?

Probably.  See #3 in Using Disk Utility.
Also, the "Alternative Method" mentions using a disk image.  My experience with disk images is limited to those temporary "disks" used when installing new software that are erased when put in the trash or the computer restarts.  Is there such thing as a perminent disk image?
Yes.  You can create and keep them anywhere.  They're kind of like a disk-within-a-disk.  They have their own format, directories, etc.  For example, some folks use encrypted disk images for their sensitive files.
    There are a few considerations:
Only one user can access it at a time, so if you use Fast User Switching and one user has it open, others won't be able to use it.
You'll need to put it in each user's Login Items so it will be mounted at login, per the article.
The contents will not be backed-up while it's mounted.
(But, in many cases the iPhoto Library won't be backed-up by Time Machine while the iPhoto app is open, no matter where it is.)

  • Moving a functional jsp and jar file to new directory breaks import?

Simply put - how can I "move" or "copy" a functional JSP directory from the root of my site to a subdirectory
of the same site and have it continue to work?
    here are the details:
I have a site where the functional JSP content resides like so ...
    c:\site\itworkshere\thetestfile.jsp
    c:\site\itworkshere\WEB-INF\web.xml
    c:\site\itworkshere\lib\thejarfile.jar
    c:\site\itworkshere\classes\props.properties
but when I copy the"itworkshere" directory to c:\site\newdirectory\itworkshere
and try to load thetestfile.jsp page in my browser, I get ...
thetestfile$jsp.java:6: Package com.corporatename.module.io not found in import.
I know that the module.io classes are in thejarfile.jar, but for some reason, now that I've put the files
in a new directory, the import is failing (simple import directive in thetestfile.jsp) And - yes - the .jar
file is there in the new subdirectory.
I am a newbie with jsp and just need to copy the files to new location and have them continue to work.
Do I have to recompile the .jar with some sort of adjustments? I poked around and I don't see any assumptions about the directory structure in the build. The behavior leads me to believe that the build is assuming something
about its location in the directory tree.
Hope this question is clear and I appreciate any direction you can provide to steer me where to look/modify
the necessary changes so I can move the .jsp's and .jar and not break them.

Thanks for the suggestions and insights. I have made some progress.
a context path of "/newdirectory/itworkshere" and a docBase of "./newdirectory/itworkshere" has resolved
    the .jsp include problem.
However this seems a bit counter-intuitive to me considering that the default root context which is "" stands
at the appBase which in my case is C:\Site. Since the default does not explicitly refer to the "itworkshere" directory,
I'd expect that the newly added Context element would not have to either ---- BUT --- it does require that I include "itworkshere" in the context path and docBase (where I would expect ./newdirectory would have been sufficient since the default works that way) ... am I missing something?
Now I havethe next odd behavior - the Servlet which resides in "itworkshere\WEB-INF\lib" is not loading when I put the appropriate URL in --> /newdirectory/itworkshere/DataCrunchingServlet
I checked the web.xml file and it has the appropriate servlet-name and url-pattern (relative references)
Furthermore I did a test where I simply rename the original working instance directory and again --- the URL is failing to find the servlet!!! (and yes I stopped/started Tomcat) It is as if the servlet can only be found in the originally installed scenario.
I am extremely puzzled that the behaviors seem to indicate an assumption about the path structure, but the web.xml file is set up correctly.
    Help help!!! and Thank you.l

  • AppleScript: copy a file to a new location, changing its name

I want to copy a selected file to a new location and change its name, both location and name adjustable by the user. It would seem natural to me (a neophyte) to use the Duplicate and Choose File Name commands to do this, so this is the module I came up with:
    tell application "Finder"
              set myFile to the selection
set textsAlias to alias "Campidoglio:Users:jeffreyjdean:Dropbox:Tinctoris:Editing Software:TextToJS:texts:"
set fileForConversion to choose file name default name "shortname.txt" default location textsAlias
              try
duplicate document file myFile to fileForConversion with replacing
              on error
display dialog "Error: Unable to save file."
              end try
    end tell
This doesn't work. The error dialog comes up and this is the result report:
    tell application "Finder"
      get selection
      --> {document file "12 De inventione et usu musice.txt" of folder "Edited texts" of folder "Desktop" of folder "jeffreyjdean" of folder "Users" of startup disk}
choose file name default name "shortname.txt" default location alias "Campidoglio:Users:jeffreyjdean:Dropbox:Tinctoris:Editing Software:TextToJS:texts:"
      --> file "Campidoglio:Users:jeffreyjdean:Dropbox:Tinctoris:Editing Software:TextToJS:texts:shortname.txt"
      -- 'core'\'clon'{ 'insh':'furl'("file://localhost/Users/jeffreyjdean/Dropbox/Tinctoris/Editing%20 Software/TextToJS/texts/shortname.txt"), 'alrp':'true'("true"), '----':'obj '{ 'form':'indx', 'want':'docf', 'seld':[ 'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'docf', 'seld':'utxt'("12 De inventione et usu musice.txt"), 'from':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'cfol', 'seld':'utxt'("Edited texts"), 'from':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'cfol', 'seld':'utxt'("Desktop"), 'from':'obj '{ 'form':'name', 'want':'cfol', 's…
--> error number -1700 from {document file "12 De inventione et usu musice.txt" of folder "Edited texts" of folder "Desktop" of folder "jeffreyjdean" of folder "Users" of startup disk} to integer
display dialog "Error: Unable to save file."
      --> {button returned:"OK"}
    end tell
    Result:
    {button returned:"OK"}
Why is it telling me it can't duplicate a file to an integer? According to the AS Language Guide, the result of Choose File Name is "The selected location, as a file." How does this become an integer in my script?
That may be a side show. What I really want to work out is how to achieve the aim stated at the beginning: take a selected file (that part is working OK) and duplicate it to an arbitrary location with an arbitrary new name, decided by the user. What's the best way to go about this?
    TIA,
    Jeff
Message was edited by: Jeffrey Dean

I think you're misinterpreting the error message.
It's not complaining about your 'Choose File Name', per se.
There are two problems with your script.
    First, you:
              set myFile to the selection
As far as the Finder is concerned, 'selection' is a list. It's always a list, even if only one item is selected - heck, it's still a list if no files are selected... just an empty list.
So that's the first thing the script is complaining about - you are using a list that you're trying to coerce to a file. Can't happen.
You have a couple of options here, depending on what you want to do.
You can tell the Finder to duplicate a list - it will simply duplicate all the files in the list. It has no problem with that, although you're going to run into problems when you try to set the file name(s). This highlights one of the design flaws with your script - how do you know the user only has one thing selected? At the very least you should check how many items are selected and react accordingly.
The other option is to iterate through the list, duplicating each file in turn. Again, it's not clear what you want/expect the outcome to be here - since you include 'with replacing', you'd likely end up with one file (the last one in the list) as being the named file and all other duplicates lost.
The third option is to expect there to be one item selected, and just act upon the first one - thereby ignoring multiple selections, although it's undefined as to which item is 'first' in the list.
    Your call.
Once you get over the issue of identifying what you want to duplicate, the second issue with your script is how you're calling duplicate. You cannot duplicate one file to another file name. The duplicate command expects (demands?) a directory as the 'to' parameter, not a file name.
In other words, you can duplicate a file to a new directory. You cannot duplicate it to a new file name - at least not in one step. In order to do that you need to duplicate the file, then change its name (or use a shell script to do it 'under the hood').
This is complicated by the fact that it's the rename that requires you to check for duplicates, which you have to do manually.
So given the above, and assuming you expect/want one item to be selected, your script should look more like:
    tell application "Finder"
set myFile to item 1 of (get selection) -- ignore multiple selections
set textsAlias to alias "Campidoglio:Users:jeffreyjdean:Dropbox:Tinctoris:Editing Software:TextToJS:texts:"
set fileForConversion to choose file name default name "shortname.txt" default location textsAlias
set fDir to do shell script "/usr/bin/dirname " & POSIX path of fileForConversion
set fName to do shell script "/usr/bin/basename " & POSIX path of fileForConversion
              try
set newFile to duplicate myFile to POSIX file fDir with replacing
if (exists file fName of folder fDir) then
delete file fName of folder fDir
                        end if
set name of newFile to fName
              on error
display dialog "Error: Unable to save file."
              end try
    end tell
Incidentally, this is something that could be much more easily done with a shell command, since the shell isn't as sensitive about file paths and data types.

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?
