Moving many mocieclips

I'm new. I'd like to create a file that has 3 groups of
movieclips. Group 1 never moves in the users viewport. Whenever
group 2 moves, group 3 moves as well, but group 3 can also move
independently. I expect to draw all of the mc's by hand instead of
with AS, otherwise I would create them all as children of one mc
and move that. Do I just make 3 groups and move them? Is there a
way to add movieclips to one big clip after they are already drawn?
Just looking for advice on the best terms to google to figure out
how to proceed. Thanks in advance.

Hello Adam,
(In addition to Doug's excellent answer)
When using those move vs copy tips, a small green "+" appears to visually help you drag the way you meant:
- If the green "+" shows, it's a copy.
- If the green "+" doesn't show, it's a move.
"any other tips about how to increase efficiency of the computer?"
Well, hundreds, thousands, many undocumented...
- Exploring your usual keyboard shortcuts and combinations, with the Option key in addition, or with the Command key, or both, or combined with mouse clicks, holds or drags, the Control key too sometimes, quite often unveils a hidden feature that you easily remember in the future because it very often really adds a plus to your efficiency.
About shortcuts, many Apple KB articles:

Try also certain combinations of
Exposé + Tab,
Command-Tab then ~/H/Q (with the ⌘ key hold down),
the right-clicking in the Dock (folders icons...),
the hold-clicking too (Finder's Dock icon),
the Control + F keys keyboard navigation (enable with control-F1),
keyboard navigation by hitting letters (or two or three letters) in menus or in Finder's column view,
etc etc etc...

  • Moving many files to a new directory WITHOUT copying

    Hello,
    I'm trying to increase the efficiency of my iBook G4 by deleting all extraneous/replicated files. In addition to this, I'm trying to organize all the files that remain into sub-directories. Question: How do I move a large amount of files to a different directory without creating copies of those files? Everytime I try to execute something like this, the result is that aliases of all selected files get moved to the new directory, but the original files remain where they were. How do I get around this?
    Also, any other tips about how to increase efficiency of the computer? I have an iBook G4 running 10.3.9 Thanks.

  • Selecting and moving many messages not working - try sorting by message classes

    I posted this a while back, and have an update now.
    I file my sent items.  Call me crazy, but I like to at the end of every quarter, move sent items from that quarter into sub folders.  It's usually 2-4000 items, and ever since I installed OL2010, I have had weird issues when trying to clean my Sent items.
    Example:  Select 2000 items, sorted by date from Sent Items.  Drag and drop to my 2009Q4 folder.  It then prompts me "Creating a new item from the selected items could take some time. Are you sure you want to create a new item from these 2000 items?"
    So I figured possible Ctrl is stuck down or something, so I right click, Move, select the folder.  Same issue.
    I start selecting smaller data sets.  I got to about 50-60 items at a time that I was able to move and not get that message.  I got frustrated and stopped working on it.
    This morning, I decided to re-test this.  Same issue presents itself.  So instead, I sorted by message class.  I was able to select 3800 message items.  The remaining items were messages with attachments, text/mobile messages, and calendar invite responses.
    It appears that some combination of selecting multiple message classes was triggering my issue.  I suspect the newest of them, the mobile messages to be the issue, so I deleted them, and retried, nope, same error, even selecting only the show message class types.   Would like to see this fixed, of course, and will be sending a frown with the link to this thread as well.
    Chris

    I had this problem too.  For me, simply sorting by message class, then finding all the calendar items and moving them first, then going back and doing the rest, allowed me to move them as I liked.   However, its not clear to me that I have
    all message classes (not sure what they all are), so it could be there are other message classes that cause problems when you move "mixed classes".   I do think this is an MS Outlook bug, but not clear anyone has reported it to MS.  ;-<
    You can prove this by simply selecting a calendar item and a msg, and try moving the two.  You will have this issue.
    However, you'd think that MS itself would be a vast user of MS Outlook and if we're discovering this, you'd think MS internal folks are too, so I'm deferring to them to self-resolve.   Until then, I'll just use this workaround.
    Definition of "Message classes" for others reading this...  You may have already inferred, but two examples of "classes" are a normal email (.msg) and a calendar item.  You can sort these by clicking on the "icon" field at the top of your email
    folder, just to the right of the "bell" (Reminders).   Not sure how to put a .JPG in this posting, since a picture would explain this much better than I can using words.

  • Numerical way wanted of moving many keyframes ?

    Hi
    Flash CS5
    I need to move left and right keyframes until I have my animation fine tuned, I have a very long timeline of many scrolls width and having to drag KF's left and right, re scrolling a few times to do so, is a real pain.
    Is there a way of selecting a keyframe in a timeline and entering the new frame number to have it move to that frame ?
    If I have a Classic Tween with a few KF's in it and its guide layer the next row above it , can I shift that entire tween sequence on one row to a position that overlaps that sequence ..and how ?
    I also need to alter magnification on the timeline to lessen all thsi scrolling, again how ?
    Envirographics

    The option to reduce cell size on the timeline is here (but I find it sort of unusable at tiny), in the upper right of the timeline panel:
    You can select all or a portion of a sequence (from the start to the end of a single keyframe) by just double clicking anywhere inside the keyframe.
    To select over multiple keyframes just do as you're doing. Click to select the first frame anywhere you want to start:
    Scroll over to where you want the selection to end, hold shift and click to select the end:
    You're then free to drag that piece anywhere in the rest of your timeline or press cut or copy frames, then drag or paste where you want it.

  • Moving many but not all iPhoto photos between users

    My wife and I share an iMac with separate user accounts. We'd like to move lots of photos from iPhoto in one user account to another. But after we exported original images and video from one account to a shared drive, about a third of the exported images and video failed to import into the other iPhoto account. Is there a better way to do this? Thanks.

    Thanks. The error message I get is "Unreadable files. The following files could not be imported. The files are in an unrecognized format." It's odd, because they are all jpg's, they are all photos taken by iPhone 5's, and they all exported from one user's iTunes library in original format. So I wouldn't expect problems.
    We previously shared a library but for us it might be easier to manage the family photos if we each keep the set of photos that we take in our own user libraries.

  • Moving many albums into just 1 album

    hello all...i have 4 albums i would like to move to just one album and make a slideshow. my problem is, when i select all the pics from one album and drag to new album, no problem. then, when i select all pics from 2nd album and drag, the new imported pics are scattered throughout the new album. i would like to move them and keep them in order. hope this makes sense. any help would be appreciated

    applex2:
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Create the new album and set the sort to manual. Now try dragging each of the other albums in, one at a time and see if the order is kept. That's the only way I know of the achieve it if it is possible.
    The only other way would be to batch sequentially rename each album so that when sorted by title they would be in the order you want. Like the first album rename to A-1.jpg, etc. and the second album to B-1.jpg, etc. When you're done you can batch change the title back to the file name.

  • Itunes/moving many MP3 files in folders into CDR to get more than 80 mins

    A friend recently sent me one CDR containing 7-8 folders of MP3s consisting of about 10 hours of music. He's using a PC. I want to do the same with my Mac. Any suggestions?
    G4 Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Perhaps the whiff of illicit activity has disuaded people from answering this query, but I can assure the powers-that-be that the MP3s in question were composed of personally-recorded material going back some years that was never released (and thankfully never will be). At any rate, the problem is "solved" to the degree that I'll simply use more CDRs instead of constantly checking this message board for replies that do not materialize. If I could delete this post myself I would, but since I can't, I can only ask the man behind the green curtain to pull the plug for me. Thank you.

  • Moving many files to server with 1 or 2 errors in every folder.

    Just wondering, is there a way to move files to another location and to have the OS prompt me with the error for a given file, *but continue ahead with all the other files?*
    Some files have improper names, while others it seems are just too big... like that makes any sense, but it's only happening to files that are 400MB or so or larger.

  • Problem moving folders with Lightroom 4.4 on Mac OS 10.7.5

    I am trying to move a folder of recently edited files from my desktop to an external drive where I keep all my processed files using Lightroom but I keep getting a message that the folder can not be moved.
    If I try to create a new folder on the external drive using Lightroom I get a message saying the folder could not be created.
    This has just happened for the first time. I have never had issues with this in the past and have successfully moved many folders over the years.
    I tried rebooting Lightroom to no avail.
    Any suggestions?

    Make sure you have write permissions on the destination disk. You may need to repair permissions.

  • .mov files and iMovie 9, moved from another Mac

    hi
    I moved many iMovie files from my Mac Pro (using iMovie 6) to an external FW drive. I then connected the ext. drive to my new MBP and launched iMovie 8.0.5. Not only will iMovie 8.0.5 not launch the projects as a movie, an error message states that many files are too large and the s/w quits. The files which I can import look very compressed as well.
    I have just downloaded iMovie 6.0.3 onto my MBP.
    Any suggestions as to what I should do in order to view my projects? Should I launch iMovie 6.0.3 and attempt to import the files there?
    Thanks
    Chuck S.

    Try an import the MOV files into iMovie 09 but make sure you turn OFF Optimize video.
    Try that and see if it works.

  • Massive memory hemorrhage; heap size to go from about 64mb, to 1.3gb usage

    **[SOLVED]**
    Note: I posted this on stackoverflow as well, but a solution was not found.
    Here's the problem:
    [1] http://i.stack.imgur.com/sqqtS.png
    As you can see, the memory usage balloons out of control! I've had to add arguments to the JVM to increase the heapsize just to avoid out of memory errors while I figure out what's going on. Not good!
    ##Basic Application Summary (for context)
    This application is (eventually) going to be used for basic on screen CV and template matching type things for automation purposes. I want to achieve as high of a frame rate as possible for watching the screen, and handle all of the processing via a series of separate consumer threads.
    I quickly found out that the stock Robot class is really terrible speed wise, so I opened up the source, took out all of the duplicated effort and wasted overhead, and rebuilt it as my own class called FastRobot.
    ##The Class' Code:
        public class FastRobot {
             private Rectangle screenRect;
             private GraphicsDevice screen;
             private final Toolkit toolkit;
             private final Robot elRoboto;
             private final RobotPeer peer;
             private final Point gdloc;
             private final DirectColorModel screenCapCM;
             private final int[] bandmasks;
             public FastRobot() throws HeadlessException, AWTException {
                  this.screenRect = new Rectangle(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
                  this.screen = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice();
                  toolkit = Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit();
                  elRoboto = new Robot();
                  peer = ((ComponentFactory)toolkit).createRobot(elRoboto, screen);
                  gdloc = screen.getDefaultConfiguration().getBounds().getLocation();
                  this.screenRect.translate(gdloc.x, gdloc.y);
                  screenCapCM = new DirectColorModel(24,
                            /* red mask */    0x00FF0000,
                            /* green mask */  0x0000FF00,
                            /* blue mask */   0x000000FF);
                  bandmasks = new int[3];
                  bandmasks[0] = screenCapCM.getRedMask();
                  bandmasks[1] = screenCapCM.getGreenMask();
                  bandmasks[2] = screenCapCM.getBlueMask();
                  Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().sync();
             public void autoResetGraphicsEnv() {
                  this.screenRect = new Rectangle(Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().getScreenSize());
                  this.screen = GraphicsEnvironment.getLocalGraphicsEnvironment().getDefaultScreenDevice();
             public void manuallySetGraphicsEnv(Rectangle screenRect, GraphicsDevice screen) {
                  this.screenRect = screenRect;
                  this.screen = screen;
             public BufferedImage createBufferedScreenCapture(int pixels[]) throws HeadlessException, AWTException {
        //          BufferedImage image;
                DataBufferInt buffer;
                WritableRaster raster;
                  pixels = peer.getRGBPixels(screenRect);
                  buffer = new DataBufferInt(pixels, pixels.length);
                  raster = Raster.createPackedRaster(buffer, screenRect.width, screenRect.height, screenRect.width, bandmasks, null);
                  return new BufferedImage(screenCapCM, raster, false, null);
             public int[] createArrayScreenCapture() throws HeadlessException, AWTException {
                       return peer.getRGBPixels(screenRect);
             public WritableRaster createRasterScreenCapture(int pixels[]) throws HeadlessException, AWTException {
             //     BufferedImage image;
                 DataBufferInt buffer;
                 WritableRaster raster;
                  pixels = peer.getRGBPixels(screenRect);
                  buffer = new DataBufferInt(pixels, pixels.length);
                  raster = Raster.createPackedRaster(buffer, screenRect.width, screenRect.height, screenRect.width, bandmasks, null);
             //     SunWritableRaster.makeTrackable(buffer);
                  return raster;
        }In essence, all I've changed from the original is moving many of the allocations from function bodies, and set them as attributes of the class so they're not called every time. Doing this actually had a significant affect on frame rate. Even on my severely under powered laptop, it went from ~4 fps with the stock Robot class, to ~30fps with my FastRobot class.
    ##First Test:
    When I started outofmemory errors in my main program, I set up this very simple test to keep an eye on the FastRobot. Note: this is the code which produced the heap profile above.
        public class TestFBot {
             public static void main(String[] args) {
                  try {
                       FastRobot fbot = new FastRobot();
                       double startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
                       for (int i=0; i < 1000; i++)
                            fbot.createArrayScreenCapture();
                       System.out.println("Time taken: " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime)/1000.);
                  } catch (AWTException e) {
                       e.printStackTrace();
        }##Examined:
    It doesn't do this every time, which is really strange (and frustrating!). In fact, it rarely does it at all with the above code. However, the memory issue becomes easily reproducible if I have multiple for loops back to back.
    #Test 2
        public class TestFBot {
             public static void main(String[] args) {
                  try {
                       FastRobot fbot = new FastRobot();
                       double startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
                       for (int i=0; i < 1000; i++)
                            fbot.createArrayScreenCapture();
                       System.out.println("Time taken: " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime)/1000.);
                       startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
                       for (int i=0; i < 500; i++)
                            fbot.createArrayScreenCapture();
                       System.out.println("Time taken: " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime)/1000.);
                       startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
                       for (int i=0; i < 200; i++)
                            fbot.createArrayScreenCapture();
                       System.out.println("Time taken: " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime)/1000.);
                       startTime = System.currentTimeMillis();
                       for (int i=0; i < 1500; i++)
                            fbot.createArrayScreenCapture();
                       System.out.println("Time taken: " + (System.currentTimeMillis() - startTime)/1000.);
                  } catch (AWTException e) {
                       e.printStackTrace();
        }##Examined
    The out of control heap is now reproducible I'd say about 80% of the time. I've looked all though the profiler, and the thing of most note (I think) is that the garbage collector seemingly stops right as the fourth and final loop begins.
    The output form the above code gave the following times:
    Time taken: 24.282 //Loop1
    Time taken: 11.294 //Loop2
    Time taken: 7.1 //Loop3
    Time taken: 70.739 //Loop4
    Now, if you sum the first three loops, it adds up to 42.676, which suspiciously corresponds to the exact time that the garbage collector stops, and the memory spikes.
    [2] http://i.stack.imgur.com/fSTOs.png
    Now, this is my first rodeo with profiling, not to mention the first time I've ever even thought about garbage collection -- it was always something that just kind of worked magically in the background -- so, I'm unsure what, if anything, I've found out.
    ##Additional Profile Information
    [3] http://i.stack.imgur.com/ENocy.png
    Augusto suggested looking at the memory profile. There are 1500+ `int[]` that are listed as "unreachable, but not yet collected." These are surely the `int[]` arrays that the `peer.getRGBPixels()` creates, but for some reason they're not being destroyed. This additional info, unfortunately, only adds to my confusion, as I'm not sure why the GC wouldn't be collecting them
    ##Profile using small heap argument -Xmx256m:
    At irreputable and Hot Licks suggestion I set the max heap size to something significantly smaller. While this does prevent it from making the 1gb jump in memory usage, it still doesn't explain why the program is ballooning to its max heap size upon entering the 4th iteration.
    [4] http://i.stack.imgur.com/bR3NP.png
    As you can see, the exact issue still exists, it's just been made smaller. ;) The issue with this solution is that the program, for some reason, is still eating through all of the memory it can -- there is also a marked change in fps performance from the first the iterations, which consume very little memory, and the final iteration, which consumes as much memory as it can.
    The question remains why is it ballooning at all?
    ##Results after hitting "Force Garbage Collection" button:
    At jtahlborn's suggestion, I hit the Force Garbage Collection button. It worked beautifully. It goes from 1gb of memory usage, down to the basline of 60mb or so.
    [5] http://i.stack.imgur.com/x4282.png
    So, this seems to be the cure. The question now is, how do I pro grammatically force the GC to do this?
    ##Results after adding local Peer to function's scope:
    At David Waters suggestion, I modified the `createArrayCapture()` function so that it holds a local `Peer` object.
    Unfortunately no change in the memory usage pattern.
    [6] http://i.stack.imgur.com/Ky5vb.png
    Still gets huge on the 3rd or 4th iteration.
    #Memory Pool Analysis:
    ###ScreenShots from the different memory pools

    ##Old Gen:
    [9] http://i.stack.imgur.com/gmfe2.png
    Just about all of the memory usage seems to fall in this pool.
    Note: PS Survivor Space had (apparently) 0 usage
    ##I'm left with several questions:
    (a) does the Garbage Profiler graph mean what I think it means? Or am I confusing correlation with causation? As I said, I'm in an unknown area with these issues.
    (b) If it is the garbage collector... what do I do about it..? Why is it stopping altogether, and then running at a reduced rate for the remainder of the program?
    (c) How do I fix this?
    Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

    Turns out this issue was directly related to the garbage collector. The default one, for whatever reason, would get behind on its collection at points, and thus the memory would balloon out of control, which then, once allocated, became the new normal for the GC to operate at.
    Manually setting the GC to ConcurrentMarkSweep solved this issue completely. After numerous tests, I have been unable to reproduce the memory issue. The garbage collector does an excellent job of keeping on top of these minor collections.

  • What are the folder/file names of PSE12 catalogs?

      I'm curious about what files/folders are created by PSE 12 when setting up the original catalog and then each subsequent catalog.  Also, what files/folders are created for the PSE backup and is there a default folder/file structure tied to the catalog - or is it wholely separate?

    LinusF wrote:
    I "know" about the Program Data ....catalogs/[my catalog] location.  Is there any file necessary to the catalog which is NOT there?
    The catalog folders contain everything that is necessary for the organizer. The only thing you might consider is to take a note of your preferences settings. The backup folders also contain everything necessary; the only difference is that it may take some time to rebuild the 'cache' files automatically after the restore.
    Put another way, I am moving many, many files off my current C: drive in order to install an SSD.  I want to make super sure that I catch everything PSE may have stashed here and there and get it out to "safety" before reformatting this disk.  Thanks for all the help you've been along the line.
    The backup and restore process is highly recommended in your situation, but generally it's not the only way to 'move' catalogs and media libraries. Let's say you have all your media files under a single master folder such as 'My photos', you can use the Folder view (left panel) to drag and drop on another external or internal drive. Your catalog is then updated for the new location.
    - advantage : you can check the transfer immediately
    - drawback : you must be patient...
    That's for transferring your media library, now you can also move your catalog folder, either manually or by using the catalog manager 'move' option.
    So, the backup/restore process is not the only way.
    If you want to keep only your Elements program on the SSD, I would not store the catalogs there, I'd store the catalogs in custom location in your old reformatted internal drive. You'll need an external drive for the backup. Alternatively, you could move library and catalogs to the external drive, and back to the old reformatted drive as explained above. You might even use the external drive for both purposes...

  • How do I move (not backup) purchased Apps?

    Hi there
    I sent this question to Support earlier but they directed me to Applecare for an answer... Hopefully someone here might be able to help - thanks in advance!
    I've been using the Mac App Store since launch. I run my machine with a smallish SSD main drive and a larger hard drive for extra storage. A month ago I moved many of my apps to the hard drive, including 12 items purchased from the app store I don't use often, saving me around 14Gb on my SSD.
    Now, whenever I launch the app store, it wants to download these items (since, I assume, it can't see them in my Applications folder).
    Is there a way for me to point the App store to my other hard drive?
    I had created aliases in my Applications folder to all these anyway, for my own use, but would it help if I researched sym links and used that, or something similar?
    I'd like to keep the space saved on my SSD but still have the App Store recognise, and update if necessary, my apps in their new location.
    Thanks

    Apps must be stored in the Applications folder.
    It's one of the things I like about OS X, that applications are so easily moved around.
    If you haven't run into problems not having Mac OS X native apps in the Applications folder yet, you may. I've seen an untold amount of Safari crash reports where the user moved the Safari app to the Desktop or somewhere else on the drive and Safari would no longer launch without quitting.
    The other thing is, if I do delete them is there a way to stop them trying to download whenever I click "check for available downloads" (or whetever it's called)?
    That's handy if you tried downloading an app that was "paused" and needs to resumed. If there are updates available you'll see a red badge icon where you see Updates top right side of the App Store window or a red badge on the App Store icon in your Dock.
    "Checking for an available download" is not the same as updates.
    You're welcome
