Moving music files from one PC to another

Can anyone help here?
I moved my music library from one PC to a new one (using the iPod in the regular flash disk mode).
I don't know what settings I pressed, consolidate library or something, but now I have phantom duplicates of every tune in my iTunes library, i.e. I have double the songs but one of each copy has an exclamation mark by the left hand side and when you click on it, it tells me "the song could not be used because the original file cannot be found ... " I want to delete these phantom songs but cannot sort them so would need to delete them one by one.
What on earth has gone wrong here? What can I do to remove all the phantom songs without deletely one by one (I have 2,000 songs).
Thanks,
Dan

Hi Dan,
Firstly, see if this helps: View -> Show Duplicates.
Hope this helps!

I don't see anything in Help that shows when you already have transfered all the files over.  Why would it want to erase and sync when I already have all the music folder copied over?  I didn't have an issue when I had another technician copy from one laptop to another.  Home sharing is also on but not being recognized.

I suspect you only migrated the media folder instead of the complete working library. Either review the transfer process and copy over the entire iTunes folder from your old profile's music folder or see Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

  • Moving the files from one directory to another.

It seems that this would be simple but I am not able to do it easily. I just want to move files from one directory to another directory. I tried the file class renameTo as in the following...
    File fFrom = new File("C:\\uhin\\batch\\outgoing");
    File fTo = new File("C:\\uhin\\batch\\outgoing\\back");
    fFrom.renameTo(fTo);
but this doesn't seem to work. I have tried deleting the directory and then recreating it but this doesn't seem to work as in.
    fTo.delete();
    fTo.mkdir();
    any ideas ?
    thanks
    kris.

That code you have there tries to rename the directory from C:\uhin\batch\outgoing to C:\uhin\batch\outgoing\back. I'm not sure if you can rename directories in general, but even if you can that particular renaming wouldn't work.
However you didn't want to rename the directory in any case. You need to use a File method called listFiles (if I recall correctly... check the API documentation) which returns an array of File objects, representing all the files in that directory. Then loop through that array, and for each File in it, (1) create a new File object with the new name, and (2) call renameTo() to rename the file.

  • Moving user files from one server to another.

    Hi everyone
I would need your help to help me migrate the user files of around 300 persons to a new server.
Is there a tool that could help me doing that?
    Here is the situation:
I have an old 2003 server with all the user accounts. We are using the shares to manage rights.
We want to migrate all these accounts to a 2008 R2 server using NTFS rights.
    So:
is there a tool that could:
    - copy the files and put NTFS right automatically with the username (%username%) as owner for each user personal folder.
    - change the path of the personal folder in each account in AD to the new server.
    - Make them automatically members of a specific group (We use that group to exclude these users from the old login script that would've map to old server instead.)
is there anyone who could help me with this issue?
    Thank you very much!
    Dag

    Hi Dag,
You can use robocopy to copy user files NTFS permissions from one server to another server and use /COPY:O to copy the owner information.
For robocopy command, I would like to suggest you refer to the below article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc733145(v=ws.10).aspx
Robocopy will not help copy Share permissions but only NTFS permissions. So if the drive letter will not be changed, you can backup and restore the Share permission with steps here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/125996
Then you can refer to the article below to change the path of the personal folder in each account in AD:
    Change a user's home directory

  • Moving music library from one computer to another

I need to rephrase my question: Is there a way to transfer my itunes library from one computer (that is being discarded) to my new computer that already has an itunes library on it? we have a new computer that my son put his library on, but we want to combine our libraries and use just the one computer to sync our music on each of our ipods. Thanks.

You can copy the music directly from the iPods. If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    TuneJack Windows Only
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iGadget Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • Moving music library from one account to another

Quick Question....my wife put a bunch of music on our I mac but on my account. I would prefer to keep her stuff separate like music and pics. Does anyone know if you can simply transfer the libraries music and pictures that she has put under my account to her user name

Are you referring to a Mac OS X user account, or an iTunes Store account? If you're referring to an iTunes Store account, there's no way to transfer a purchase from one iTunes Store account to another. If you're referring to a Mac OS X user account, though (presuming that you each have your own separate iTunes libraries), just copy the music from your OSX user account to hers. You can do this in several ways, but the easiest is probably to just drag the music files to the Users -> Shared folder (you can drag them right from the iTunes window), then log into her user account and drag the files into the iTunes window. Once you're certain that the tracks have copied successfully and play in iTunes, you can then delete them from your iTunes library.

  • Moving RAW files from one drive to another without loosing all your work in Lightroom

I am posting this for two reasons, the first is I have been trying to figure out how to get my raw files off my hard drive & onto my external hardrive for ages, as my laptop is filling up & slowing down with the huge files my new camera captures. I have been researching this & have found it hard to find a clear answer to my particular problem using Windows 7 not a Mac.
After loosing some files in Lightroom when I moved them within Explorer instead of Lightroom, & being unable to figure out how to add a new drive in the Library module in Lightroom to move them to, I wanted to make sure I got it right when I moved the lot of them. I finally figured out a way, it might be round about, but it got it done without any trouble.
This is how I moved my files:
In Windows Explorer I moved one folder which Lightroom uses, from my laptop to the drive I want to store them all on from now on.
Then in Lightroom, under 'Library' (along the top, eg 'File' 'Edit' 'Library' etc) I selected 'Find missing photos' & led Lightroom to the new location. Now my external hd as well as my laptop hd was listed under 'Folders'  (on the Left hand side of the screen along with 'Navigator' 'Catalog' 'Folders' etc) in the Library module.
After that it was simple. Just a matter of dragging & dropping from my C drive (laptop)to my G drive (external hd) while in Lightroom; Library module. This way Lightroom keeps track of where the files are stored & nothing is lost.
From now on I will be importing raw files from my camera to my external hd & working on them all from there.
If anyone has a simpler way please share it. I am very new at this & don't profess to be an expert. So any advice would be greatly appreciated
The second reason for this post is that I'd like to know how to make sure that the adjustments made in Lightroom are stored on the external hd as well, incase anything happens to the laptop?
Is exporting the catalogue what I need to do?
Or can I back up the Lightroom adjustments to my external hd somehow?
OR when I moved the raw files did this information move with them?
I understand that my raw files are the original unaltered files & that the changes made in Lightroom are recorded seperately & applied in Lightroom itself..... Well, that's what I think I know about how it all works after a few months of using it, so please forgive me if I'm missing something & I'll be very happy to be enlightened if you'd be so kind
Happy New Year to you all!

All the adjustments are stored in the catalog (not in the file). So you want to back it up, and the external is a good place. In the catalog settings (Edit > Catalog Settings > General) there is an option to set a regular backup schedule, and you'll be asked where you want to put it.
The backup is just a regular copy of the catalog, and you can simply launch Lightroom from that, by double-clicking it.
The image files themselves should also be backed up of course, but that's outside Lightroom.

  • Moving DBF Files from one computer to another

Hi, I was looking for some help with an issue I have come across. I had SQL Developer on my Desktop with 13 different tables and up to 6 months worth of data. Yesterday when starting the desktop I got the dreaded read/write error message and the compute is not starting up now.
I have now managed to take the hard drive out and I have managed to get into the files as an external drive on my laptop. What I am looking to do is to hopefully transfer the database files from the external drive to my laptop.
I have installed SQL Developer and also installed OracleXE112 on the laptop and I have located dbf files on the external drive but when I overwrite the same files on my laptop I get a listener error. What is the best way to get all my tables back? If somebody could please advise, would really appreciate it some help.
    Thanks in advance.

Hemant, my old drive (k drive now) has around 21 gb of data within the following area:
    K:\oraclexe\app\oracle\oradata\XE
    with the files
    control.dbf
    sysaux.dbf
    system.dbf
    temp.dbf
    undotbs1.dbf
    users.dbf
So I thought I could copy these files and replace the same files I have on my c drive, but its not as simple as that lol.
I have from cmd, connected to rman on the k drive but when I try and connect to the target database I get the following error:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
I dont no if its reading the tnsname.ora from the c drive or the one from the k drive...

  • I had to transferr my music files from one computer to another by directly copying the files from the hard drive to a new drive.  Itunes recognized the files and I was able to load in new songs.  The new songs won't sync with ipod.  Ideas?

To copy the files I had to remove the hard drive and direct copy them to an expansion drive on another machine.  ITunes recognized the copied files and operates correctly on the computer.  I was able to download additional songs to ITunes on the computer without problem.  The IPod however will not recognize the new songs, does an abreviated sync process and gives a message that the IPod cannot sync because files are being used by another application.  It is also does not want to accept the disconnect command.  Any suggestions on how to solve the sync problem?

how did you save the songs? can you play the songs? have you restarted the computer?

  • How to transfer music files from one computer to another

    Hello,
I have home sharing enabled on both my mac and pc. I can't figure out for the life of me how to actually transfer
songs from my mac to my pc with home sharing enabled. How do you do this?
Step by step process please. I have the latest versions of Itunes installed on both machines.

    Hello clissmann,
For the step by step of transfer music over using Home Sharing, take a look at the first article below. If you are stuck or having issues, then you may want to use another alternative like an external hard drive to copy that information over. The second article can help you out with that if you go that route.

  • Moving mail files from one Mac to another

I have my most complete Mail files on my MacBook, with e-mails going back several years. I want to copy all this data into Mail on my Mac Pro. Both computers are running OS 10.5.7.
Can these files be transferred through MobileMe? It would be a very large transfer.
Can I move the files with a thumb drive? Where is the data located? In the Mail application?
    Thanks in advance!

quit mail on both computers and copy the folder /users/username/library/mail and the file /users/username/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist from the first computer to the second. then start Mail on the second computer and it will look exactly as it did on the first one.

  • Moving Mail files from One Computer to Another

I had to swap out my wife's laptop while her primary machine was in the shop. Now that the primary is fixed, I need to move all her files back to it. But I am having a heckuva time.
Using Mail's "Import Mailboxes" function, the relevant Mail folders (in the Users/Library folder of the secondary computer) display the red "minus" sign, which means the primary computer doesn't have permission to use them.
However, when I go to the secondary, open Get Info on those folders and give "Everyone" Read & Write access... it does not solve the problem.
    What gives?
Same sort of thing happens when I just try to drag the folders over.
Primary computer is an iBook G4 running OSX 10.5. Secondary computer (from which I am trying to get the files) is an iBook G3 running 10.4

    Man, what a hassle.
First... the account on each computer has the same username AND short name. Yet, when "Read & Write" is entered in the Get Info box for all of the involved folders, I still can't access them from the G4.
One thing I tried was to duplicate the Mail Folder and the plist to a separate partition on the hard drive... figuring I could just move them over. At first this did not work because I still was denied access.
THEN, I connected (via share) to the G3 with a different account name (mine, not my wife's). Note that I was still logged in to the G4 with her name... but when I clicked on the "connect" button to access, the G3, I logged in with my name.
Suddenly, all those duped folders on the partition were accessible. So I duped them over to the G4 in the appropriate places.
At first I got a message saying Mail could not start because it keeps info on where it stores things in the MAIL folder, but that folder was inaccessible to me. It told me to change the permissions in Get Info. This I did, and then everything appeared as it should.
So... I got it done.... but I still want to know why Wife Account on one computer could not access things in the identical Wife Account on the other computer.

  • Moving "responses" file from one machine to another.

I created a distributed form using Adobe Acrobat Pro and Acrobat.com and the data collection works correctly. However when I try to move the responses PDF to another machine it loses the ability to update.
Is there a fix for this or are you only able to receive responses on the machine that created the form?

The forms were created in Adobe LiveCycle Designer ES on Windows XP SP3. I have attempted to distribute the forms from both LiveCycle and Adobe Acrobat 9 (though it looks like the distribution process works the same regardless of the program that starts it). I selected Acrobat.com to manage my responses and Acrobat 9 created a FileName_responses.PDF and FileName_distributed.PDF file.
The distributed form works perfectly and allows users to input information and submit the form online.
The responses file is able to collect data and update with new information. However once I move the responses file to my laptop (it was created on my desktop) and open it in Adobe Acrobat 9 the responses file no longer automatically updates when I open it and I'm not able to click "Update" as it is grayed out.
The file does not show as a distributed form in the tracker window despite being logged into Adobe Acrobat 9 with the same Acrobat.com login information as my desktop.
The file is not in the same directory structure on both machines as they have different Windows user names and both files are placed on the Desktop.
I'm not sure what method of submission I'm using other than Acrobat.com via the web using a submit button in the PDF.
    Thanks for the help.
