Moving my iPhoto library back to my MacBook Pro

About 6 months ago I had a older MacBook Pro and when my internal HD was getting tight I read how to move my library to an external HD. Now I have a new MacBook Pro with a much bigger HD. I would like to move the entire library back.
I need help to find the best way of doing the move. I don't know if I have to change the location on the Preference to the internal HD.
I am using iPhoto 11
I appreciate any help on this. Thanks

Simply drag the Library from the External to the Internal HD. The Pictures folder is a good idea for a place to put it. Then Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and open it.

  • How can I migrate iPhoto library from an old MacBook Pro to a new one?

When the hard drive on my MacBook Pro 13 needed to be wiped clean, I restored all my files from Time Machine except for my iPhoto files. Not sure why my iPhoto library wasn't restored, but it wasn't, and I can't find it on my Time Capsule. I want to move my partial iPhoto library from my old MacBook Pro to my new one. I understand this is possible by linking them in some way. What is that way?

There are three ways; using File Sharing over a network, transferring them via an external drive, or using FireWire Target Disk mode. If you use file sharing, use the AFP protocol. If you use an external drive, it or a partition or disk image on it needs to be formatted as Mac OS Extended.

  • Any best practices sharing iPhoto library between iMac and MacBook Pro

I have my iPhoto library on my iMac, but I would also like to view and edit keywords, etc on my MacBook Pro.
Any suggestions on how to do this?

    Larry
There are two ways to share, depending on what you mean by 'share'.
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running. On the other machine enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Remember iPhoto must be running on both machies for this to work.
If you want the other user to have the same access to the library as you: to be able to add, edit, organise, keyword etc. then:
    Quit iPhoto ion both machines.
Move the iPhoto Library Folder to an external HD set to ignore permissions
On each machine in turn: Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting dialogue, select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new library location. From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both machines will have full access to the library, in fact, both accounts will 'own' it.
However, there is a catch with this system and it is a significant one. iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.

  • How do I import my old iPhoto library to my new macbook Pro?

I have a new laptop pro and I don't want all my files similar to my old laptops so I didn't use the migration assistant. All I want is iPhoto to be the same on my new laptop as it is on my old laptop.
Is there a way to do this? Can I just grab the iPhoto library folder located in user/pictures/iPhoto Library and drag over to the new mac to copywrite it? or will that still not preserve the faces, places, and event's database?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Caleb

I have a related situation. I recently purchased a new Macbook and like the originator of this post, did not use Migration Assistant to set it up. Also like the originator, I want my iPhoto library to move to my Macbook intact. My old computer is an iMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11. That computer has iPhoto 2.0.1. I dragged my iPhoto Library on to an iPod in disk mode and dragged it from that device onto my new Macbook which is running Snow Leopard and iPhoto '09. I started iPhoto on the Macbook and pointed it to the old iPhoto Library. It started up fine, updated the Library and went through its Faces recognition routine. Super, except that my old machine tells me that my Library holds 4818 images and iPhoto on my new machine counts just 3415 images.
Can someone help me understand the discrepancy and how to rectify? Thank you.

  • I moved my itunes library to my new MacBook Pro from my iMac using an external harddrive following apple's steps. When I plug in my ipod shuffle 4g and try to download voiceover I get The iTunes Library file cannot be saved. An unknown error occured (-54)

I'm just wondering what step I should start with to resolve this. There's probably a library issue but I'm not really sure where to start with that.
I'm pretty sure that the voice over is what is giving the error with itunes because when I try to download it, it won't then the error will pop up after a few moments of itunes trying to download it. Thanks for your support!

Don't know what changed today but it downloaded and installed on the shuffle. So far so good.

  • IPhoto doesn't import after moving iPhoto library back to original (?) spot

    Hello:
Because I needed space on my original drive, I moved iPhoto library to another drive and then moved it back. iPhoto works perfectly well - It automatically loads my photos. But - when I attempt to import from my Canon Digital Rebel, it won't do it, giving a message that these files (all 7 photos in the camera) may be corrupt.
However - the photos do import correctly on my wife's Mac.
I am thinking that I did not put the iPhoto library back in exactly the right spot.
    Where should it go?
Oh - and Happy New Year!

    Hi Iann,
There is really no right spoet as you can place the iPhoto Library folder almost anywhere in your Users folder. The Pictures folder is the default location for the folder.
What I need to know is, when you moved the library to another spot, did you open iPhoto when it was there? And when you moved back to the original spot, did iPhoto open?
When you move the iPhoto Library folder, you must then launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed. iPhoto will then tell you that it can't find the library , and do you want to open another one or create a new one. You must then choose to open another one and navigate to where you moved it, then highlight it in the window, then click "open"

  • I accidentally moved my iphoto library to Macintosh HD in Finder, now it's not working anymore. How can I fix this?

    Hello everyone,
I hope someone can help me.
I wanna copy my pictures to an external hard drive. Therefore I was trying to format my Seagate 1TB external drive (so it works with the Mac), but my Disk utilities is not working as it should (don't know why). I can't open it. If I try "Show packet contents", I do see that it has some kind of content, but I don't know what to do with the content haha. So I was trying different things. Accidentally I moved my iPhoto library to Macintosh HD in Finder (instead of my external drive). Now I have 2 problems: I can't open my iPhoto anymore (can't excess the pictures) and my external hard drive is still not formatted (so I can use it for my MacBook Air 2010)... Who knows whats the best I can do, is there a way to fix this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Hanneke

Solved! I transferred iPhoto library to Trash and just transferred them back to Pictures in Finder. The problem with my external HDD: I just restarted the Mac and suddenly Disk Utilities did work. I don't know what happened, but it works again; me happy

  • I accidentally moved my iPhoto library.  Now it says "folder empty" and I can't find any of my photos anywhere.  HELP!

I was trying to clean up my startup disk and get some space freed up.  I moved a bunch of stuff to my dropbox (temporary measure until I get a backup drive).  I didn't realize my iphoto library is actually in my documents folder.  I copy the whole folder to dropbox, and then delete the contents on my hard drive.  When I go to dropbox and look at my iphoto library, it's empty.  Are my photos just gone?  Can they be recovered?  HELLLLPPP!!!!

By default your iPhoto library is in the pictures folder not the documents folder - you should have it in the pictures folder to avoid errors like this
You probably lost your iPhoto library as generally the iphoto library is corrupted often beyond repair by putting it on DropBox - as a future note NEVER delete any important files until you have verified that you have a good copy  --  and also for the future purchase an external drive formatted Mac OS extended (jourmnaled)  roughly 2 to 2 1/2 times the size of your main drive and start running TimeMachine all the time so you have hourly local backups
If you do not have a backup then all you can do it drag the iPhoto library back form DropBox to the pictures folder and hold down the option key while launching iPhoto and select the library n the pictures folder - if that does not work then you will have to start over - hopefully your Masters folder is intact and has all of you original photos - to start over drag it to the desktop, trash the messed up library and launch iPhoto to create a new library and drag the folders of photos from the Masters folder to iPhoto to import them

  • I moved my iPhoto Library file, now it wont work !

Hi, i was trying to tidy up my Hard Drives folder structure and moved my iPhoto Library file, which was and still is 72mb, but now when i open it, it hasnt got any photos in it ANYWHERE the file size is the same,.
I might be correct in thinking that i havent actually lost the photos that were being displayed in iPhoto, because these are still on my hard drive !.
But what can i do to get iPhoto back to where it was please.
I have even restored the file back to its original location from a backup but that doesnt work either. it is simply saying, i have to upgrade and loose all my photos ????
    tim

went to finder, selected 6 photos and put them in a folder in my Pictures folder.
opened up iPhoto again, the beach ball spun round a bit, but the new folder wasnt to be seen anywhere in iPhoto ?
    Exactly
there is no automatic import - on photos you specifically import either from disk or from a camera are imported to iPhoto
Import them to iPhoto - drag to the iPhoto window or to the iPhoto icon in the dock or in iPhoto file menu ==> import
    And
i have now ticked the box "copy imported items" i then closed down iPhoto
That is good but does not solve the problem for the photos that were imported while this was not checked  --  at this time it is probably best to start over with a new managed library and import all photos again
which brings me nicely to my next query, it looks to me as if ALL the pictures that got initially imported into iPhoto were all in folders. so am i correct in thinking that the pictures in my pictures folder which are NOT in a folder, will or should only be seen in iPhoto if they were in a folder when they were/are imported.
I am not sure what you are saying
But when you import a photo it is iPhoto no matter where it came from - until you import it it is not in iPhoto - finder folders make no difference and have no bearing on iPhoto  --  folders in iPhoto do not hold photos, just other folders or albums
You prebably should take the iPhoto tutorials - that will save a lot of time and frustration

  • HT1229 Moving my IPhoto library to my external hard drive Seagate 1.5TB

My computer is an IMac late 2006. She's been running really slow and erratic. My IPhoto has over 5K photos which may be the culprit.
I have a Seagate External hard drive with 1.5 TB capacity with very little data stored. I would like to move my IPhoto library to my external hard drive, to improve the performance of my computer. I am unable to locate my external hard drive even though it is connected to the IMac. Can some one help?
    Shaiboy48

Suer as long as it is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled)
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
I am not sure what this mean
I am unable to locate my external hard drive even though it is connected to the IMac

  • Woah; my first iMovie '08 project ruined by moving my iPhoto library?

So I made my first project with the new iMovie last night (I actually like it a lot more for making quick movies, but will probably need final cut express to do anything complicated, but I digress...). Finished it, yay, cute little movie, took about an hour to do. All the video came out of my iPhoto library.
So this morning, I notice that my main drive is a little low on space so I moved my iPhoto library (following the iPhoto instructions) to my larger, external drive.
When I fired up iMovie again, it spent an hour regenerating all the video thumbnails, annoying, but dealable.
But now my project video only has the thumbnails. Every clip has a little exclamation point on it, which I assume means it can't find the video clip to back it, which is terribly frustrating since it's still in the same place in the iPhoto library, just in a different place on disk.
So is iMovie writing the absolute file location into the movie project, so if you -ever- move your iPhoto library or change your disk layout your movie becomes useless? That seems like a pretty major oversight. There doesn't seem to be any way to "re-link" the video clips to their new locations or fix this problem. Brilliant.
So I pulled out plutil, and luckily the Project file is a binary plist (scared me for a minute that it was just a binary closed data file). The file locations for the videos are referenced as such:
    <string>~/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Vacation TX-1/MVI_0565.AVI</string>
So that's a -double- pain. not only is it referencing the absolute library location, it's referencing the -old- location within the library. See, I changed the name of that event in iPhoto from "Vacation TX-1" to just "Oregon Vacation", so now within the library the file's in a different spot as well.
So it seems like, unless I'm missing something, if you use a video from iPhoto you can never reorganize that video in iPhoto or change libraries? That seems like a major fix that's needed.
I'm going to try symlinking the library location to the new one, to see if as long as iMovie can find the library it can sort out the renaming. If that doesn't work, then I guess I'll be manually hacking the plist.
Am I missing an easy and obvious way to do this within iMovie?

So, adding the symlink didn't help, still missing. Upgrading to 7.0.1 didn't help.
Plist surgery did help and brought the project back to life, with one minor quirk, my thumbnails in the video editing window were gone. So the "Thumbnails" file in the bundle is a regular plist...it appears to contain the thumbnails themselves, keyed by the filename. I tried changing those paths to match as well, but that didn't do it. They are the absolute paths, with the "~" for homdir expanded. Since I left the "~" alone in the other file and just symlinked it, I wondered if maybe the resolving was different so I changed it to the absolute path of the movie file, but that didn't work either.
so I have two versions of the project, one with thumbnails but unplayable and unexportable, and another that's playable and exportable but no thumbnails. At least I didn't lose my movie.
Still crossing my fingers that I'm just missing the piece of killer-UI for finding moved video clips. Seems like if the they are switching to a video format that relies entirely on external references, including references to private paths within other programs that the user isn't even supposed to be aware of, there needs to be a tool for fixing them up.
Looking at the files, this doesn't just go for iPhoto videos...it seems also apply to stills (although since those get rendered and included in the project bundle that might not be quite as a big a deal as long as you never want to change them) and music/sound effect files.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2), iphoto '11, version 9.4.2

To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229?viewlocale=en_US - I doubt that it will solve your problem, though. You may want to post on the iPhoto forum - that's where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

  • I moved my iPhoto library to a external hard drive to free up space on my iMac per instructions, but the library is still on my iMac so I don't have much room left.  How do I get rid of the all the contents of my library on my iMac so just on backup drive

As per Apple instructions, I moved my iPhoto library to an external hard drive so that I could free up space on my full iMac.  However, I was not told the last step in the process -- How do I get the iPhoto library off my iMac so I free up that memory?

And after deleting the old Library, you should start up iPhoto while holding down the Option key in order to force iPhoto to let you select your iPhoto Library that is on your external hard drive.  If you start up iPhoto the usual way, it will just create a new, blank iPhoto Library in your /users/yourusername/Pictures folder on your iMac's internal hard drive.
