Moving new Macbook Pro HD to old Macbook

Hey everyone,
I've used this site quite a bit over the years to fix various issues I've had with my mac's.  I've been trying to research my current question, and it seems like it shouldn't be an issue but since I'm not as mac savvy as the people on this board I wanted to throw it out there to a) make sure it can be done and b) it's not a bad idea for some reason that I'm not considering.
The hard drive on my old 13" 2006 Black Macbook (Macbook 2,1) crashed last November and I decided to buy a new 13" macbook pro (MD101LL/A).
I decided to see if I could get the old one up and running again and bought a new WD Blue 320gb HD and was able to get it going and installed mac os x lion on it with out any problems (I'd upgraded the RAM to 2.5gb a couple years back).
But I was thinking today, instead of spending $50 on a new HD for my old macbook, what if I took the HD out of my new macbook (500 gb 5400rpms) and put installed it in my old macbook and instead bought a new WD 750gb 7200rpm for my new macbook for an extra $25.  I don't use my macs for anything intensive, not video editing or graphic design but seems to be a small incremental price to pay for a much faster HD.  The main reason I want to get my old computer running again is for travelling or when I take it with me out & about... this way I dont have to worry about breaking/losing/someone stealing my new one.
Also, I just updated my os x to mavericks but doesn't look like it's compatible with my old macbook... Any way to revert and go back to mountain lion?
Would my old macbook be compatible with the new one's HD?
The 500gb HD is currently partitioned with bootcamp but I'm assuming that wouldn't be an issue?
Assuming I can make this swap, is the best way to transfer my data to install the HD in my old macbook and just transfer over what I need?  Is there an easy way (program, app) to move the basic stuff like music, videos, pictures?
Thanks everyone!

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • Can I run two 2560x1440 monitors (dual link DVI) on a new Mac Pro?

I have two Monoprice Zero-G IPS monitors, which can run at resolutions of 2560x1440 using a dual-link DVI adapter.  This is what I am currently using on my old 2008 Mac Pro.
If i get a new model Mac Pro, could I continue this arrangement at the max resolution by using two Thunderbolt/Minidisplay port to Dual link DVI adapters (and, I assume, using two of the USB ports as I do now)?
Frankly, I dont need the power of a new Mac Pro but my old one is long in the tooth.  I'd get a retina Macbook and use it as my desktop, but I cant think of any way to run both monitors at full resolution on the Macbook Pro.  I dont want to run them at HDMI resolution.
    Thanks in advance!

Adapters go from $9 to $54, the latter having heat-sink which is not needed in an open cMP.
Some support both as in either or but not two at the same time, SATA interface on the PCIe afapter, or an M.2 type
While other PCIe "solutions" exist they are not OS independent or machine, the XP941 suffers from none of those concerns as it is bootable in all Mac Pro 1,1 thru 5,1, and is the only one for 200-7 models (and 2008 are iffy) so you can 'take it with you' if you move to a new cMP.
Old controller, you need two SSDs in RAID0 to get 900MB/sec writes.
Does not appear to be any of the real issues of PCIe slot and bus master, outside of you would exclude the 1x slot in the 2006 of course!
The hardest part? getting these tiny M.2 blades, which are ~ 1" x 3.25" and have a tiny screw,  on the PCIe adapter.
250GB SSD today are ~$120 + many do want SATA III PCIe (to get 550MB/sec and allow continued use of 4 x SATA II drive bays) runs ~$80-299. In some cases you then need a 2nd SSD. So if you want speed (vs size) then $240 + $100 and the $300 for XP941 256GB isn't bad.
Finally, look for an Apple blade on ebay if running Yosemite - they vary, some are 2x (slow) M.2s and you want 4x but any are probably 700MB/sec and cost $400-700. No need with Apple part to worry about TRIM.
Comparing 128GB SATA II $83 + $15 adapter vs PCIe XP941 128GB $140 + $24 is a 'toss-up' in cost but not performance, and one frees up drive bay and uses PCIe slot. (Generally 250GB are faster and better, the 128GB use to have 135MB/sec writes and $40 extras for 550MB and double storage makes sense, you never want an SSD to get down to 20% free, and you want to have 11% set aside for over-provisioning).
So in a way you can get 1000MB/sec like nMP for $175-300 in any Mac Pro, and new faster blades are on the horizon offering 1400MB/sec.
Kind of amazing, that M.2 support is in that old EFI all along waiting

  • 23" Apple Cinema HD Display with a new Mac Pro

I just replaced my old G5 Power Mac with a new Mac Pro. The old 23" Cinema HD monitor does not have the same connectors.
Apple no longer makes the ADC-DVI adaptor that I need.
    Any solutions? Thank you.

eBay search in Computers and Networking for: ADC DVI -(ATI, card, GeForce, Radeon, NVidia, Belkin)
Remember that a simple adapter will not supply the needed POWER to run the display. Other brands will work if they supply the power as well as adapt.

  • How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

How do I import an iPhoto Library  (V.7.1.5) created on my old MacBook (10. 6.8) into my new Macbook pro (10.9.1) running iPhoto 9.5.1? I tried copying onto memory stick and moving to new mac, but new iPhoto doesn't recognise the library.

So what exactly did you copy over? If it's a 12 gig iPhoto Library then it sounds like the files are there. Perhaps the copy went wrong along the way.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Moving iTunes and iPhone from an old PC to a new MacBook Pro

Hi, I am having some real problems. I have recently bought a new Macbook Pro to replace my old Windows PC. I am having no trouble moving all of documents and music from the old PC however I am completely stuck for what to do in transferring my iTunes and iPhone 4 content AND information onto the new itunes. I have consolidated the music files on the old pc but havent copied anything yet.
What I am looking to do is to be able to sync the iPhone to the new Mac without any of the information on the iphone being erased. Is this possible without having to pay for third party software? I have a WiFi network which both of the computers are connected to. I am also able to use an external harddrive.
I have already transferred the purchases from my account onto the new mac but a lot off my music isnt from the itunes store but is from various CD's.
I am really lost on what to do and I am even considering writing down all my contacts, lol. However, i do have all of my current iPhone info such as contacts and calender sync'd with iCloud if this helps.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Matt

  • Moving my Iphone to a new MacBook Pro from an old MacBook Pro

My husband just bought me a new MacBook Pro. I currently sync my Iphone to an older model MacBook Pro. How do I go about moving my Iphone to the new computer? I was going to take my 2 computers (the new one and the old one) into Apple so they could do the data migration. Is that something that they do when they move over Itunes along with my other things, or is it something I could do ahead of time?
    Thanks-

You can use migration assistant to move everything over yourself.

You can get a thunderbolt to firewire adapter. You can then get a firewire 400 to 800 cable and put the old computer in target mode. Then you can follow these instructions.

Choose migrate from other disk or volume.

  • Moving iPhotos from Old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro!

How do I move my entire iPhotos Application from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro? I want to keep all my albums and slideshows intact. Is this possible? I'm going from a MacBook Pro OS 10.5.8, iPhoto 7.5.1 to MacBook Pro OS 10.9.1 iPhoto 9.5.1

Migration Assistant has a poor record with iPhoto Libraries, unfortunately.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • HT5037 Difficulty moving old iPhoto library from 2008 (not sure which version of iPhoto it is) to new macbook pro running OSX Mavericks.

I tried downloading AND RUNNING the upgrader and I'm stuck in an infinite loop.  After running the upgrader from the utilities folder, it looks like things are working.  Then a window pops up asking me to launch iphoto to complete the upgrade.  After launching iphoto, iphoto goes back to the original error message that I need to download the upgrader.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the upgrader multiple times to no avail.  I've also tried dragging my iphoto library from the external hard drive it is housed on to many different areas before trying to launch the upgrader, none of them worked.  The external hard drive format is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). I also tried dragging the iphoto library folder in the pictures file onto my new Macbook right next to my new iphoto library folder.  This allowed me to open up iphoto (Yay!) but of course, none of the photos from my old iphoto library were in their, even when the old library was selected.
I've read what seems like hundreds of posts on this same issue, but can't seem to find a solution that works for me.  I want to simply transfer my iphoto library from an external hard drive (my old macbook just crashed, so this is the only option) to my new macbook, keeping the albums, slideshows, and organization intact.
I would appreciate any help or feedback.  Thank you in advance for reading this!

Get info then check permissions then add your curent user name (it was probably different on old Mac) and give your username full read/write permissions.

  • Using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook

When using Migration Assistant to move files from old PC laptop to new MacBook Pro, that has Windows 8 installed containing Outlook, will emails, contacts and calendar entries be moved to Outlook on the new MacBook or into Mail, Contacts and Calendar?

I doubt they will. But then I'm not sure as I used a migration program once about 18 years ago and totally FUBARed the system I had at that time and I've never used one again.
For me the reason to have a new system is to start fresh. Installing only program that I now use and manually copying data over from the older system.
Not sure your older version of Outlook, and the outlook mail boxes, are compatible with Office/Outlook for Mac 2011.
A better place to ask this question would be on the MS Office for Mac forums.
Hope it all works out for you.

Get a third-party utility such as Phone to Mac - Pod to Mac. See also, Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store and How to dowload purchased music.
