Moving Old MB Pro 256SSD to New MB Pro w/750GB 5400, Best Method?

Hi,
I just purchased a new late 2011 15" Macbook Pro to replace my mid-2009 15" Macbook Pro. Both computers are running the latest Lion 10.7.2 software. I'd like to swap my 256GB SSD for the 750GB HD. What is the best method to do this?
New MBP specs:
2.4GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7
4GB 1333MHz
750GB 5400-rpm1
Intel HD Graphics 3000
AMD Radeon HD 6770M with 1GB GDDR5
Glossy Screen
Old MBP specs
3.06 GHz Core 2 Duo
Intel Core i7
8GB 1067MHz DDR3
256GB Solid State Hard Drive
NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT 512MB
High Resolution Matte Screen

OSX Lion on your SSD should boot your new MacBook Pro. You can just swap the drives and see what happens.
Alternatively, you can test this by booting from a clone of your SSD or starting up your old MacBook Pro in Target Disk mode and booting your new MacBook Pro from your old MacBook Pro.

Use setup assistant which is offered when you setup your new Mac.  It will transfer information from a Time Machine backup, Clone or another Mac.
It's best to do this during setup to avoid issues with duplicate IDs.

  • Moving Old TM Backups to a New Hard Drive

    HI,
Unfortunately my 6 month old ext back up HD (Co to remain nameless) has died! I've managed to recover the TM backup folder and most of my media files with Disk Warrior.
I have tried to use Disk Utility 'Restore' to image the old drive to the new drive but this creating a host of problems (which I suspected 'imaged' the faulty drive data across). I have reformatted the new drive to fix this.
How can I get the back up folder across to the new drive?
    Any help greatly appreciated!
    Cheers

I don't think this will work. you really have to clone the drive but doing so will mess up the directory structure as you've found out. you can try one or 3rd party cloners like CCCloner or Superduper. they do file by file copy rather than block by block as the restore function does but i have serious doubts this will work either.

How can I get this old BT email address linked up to my new account, and stop the £1.60 a month extra I'm having to pay?
    Would appreciate if anyone knows.

  • Moving Old iMac info over to New iMac

I have backup from my old iMac and would like to put that into my New iMac.  The WD external hard drive does show up on the new iMac's desk top. Now what?
    Thank you for help.

If you made the backup by drag-copying files, drag them to the desired locations on the new iMac's internal drive.
If the backup was made by Time Machine or is a bootable clone, choose Utilities from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Migration Assistant, and transfer the data from it. Migrating a home folder will create a new user account on the computer; alternatively, you can restore home folder items from a bootable clone as if they were drag-copied to the external drive.
If it's another type of backup, check the documentation for the product which made it.

  • Moving iPhotos from Old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro!

How do I move my entire iPhotos Application from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro? I want to keep all my albums and slideshows intact. Is this possible? I'm going from a MacBook Pro OS 10.5.8, iPhoto 7.5.1 to MacBook Pro OS 10.9.1 iPhoto 9.5.1

Migration Assistant has a poor record with iPhoto Libraries, unfortunately.
To move an iPhoto Library to a new machine:
Link the two Macs together: there are several ways to do this: Wireless Network,Firewire Target Disk Mode, Ethernet, or even just copy the Library to an external HD and then on to the new machine...
But however you do choose to link the two machines...
Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

Everything seemed to work fine after moving everything over from my old MacBook Pro at first but I cannot run Outlook 2011 for Mac.  The logo displays briefly and then the app closes.  It never really even gets anything loaded other than the little logo.

  • I moved Creative Suite 5 to a new computer, deactivated on the old, activated on the new, but only Illustrator and Photoshop will open. The rest of the suite will not open. How do I fix this?

I moved Creative Suite 5 from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Air and followed the instructions for deactivating on the old and activating on the new but only Photoshop and Illustrator will work. I need to also access InDesign, Acrobat, Dreamweaver and Fireworks. Is there a way to fix this? Problem with the MacBook Air is that is doesn't have a disc drive so I had to transfer via external hard drive.
    Cheers.

The problem is that you need to install CS5 from an installation file or installation disc. You can't just copy files because there are lots of supplementary files that don't get put in the right location.
You'll need to use the Adobe Cleaner to remove all the stuff on your new computer:
Use the CC Cleaner Tool to solve installation problems | CC, CS3-CS6
Then download an installer for CS5:

I just bought a MBA and I need to move my photos and itunes to an external hard drive (from my old MacBook Pro) because they won't fit on the Air.  I got the photos moved fine and I followed an online tutorial to move the necessary files for itunes, but it didn't work.  The files copied fine, but when I tell iTunes on the Air to look at the external drive for the library, it doesn't find anything.  What I copied was the entire iTunes Media folder.  So, how do I move the necessary iTunes files from my old Pro to a external drive so I can access them from my new Air?  Whew!

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

Moving Acrobat X Pro from old MacBook Pro to new one, entry of serial number required, can't find it.  What to do?

    Hi,
You might need to deactivate Acrobat on your old MAC, then install it on your new system and then activate it with your serial number:
Please refer this link and get your serial number:

No eSATA to USB. Just a SATA/IDE to USB adapter. Google SATA/IDE to USB adapter and you will get tons of links to buy them. Most likely your local computer electronics store has them, although they might be more expensive buying locally than online.
I have several. You can get either USB 2, which what I recommend, or USB 3. USB is backward compatible so a USB 3 adapter will work on a USB 2 port and a USB 2 adapter will work on a USB 3 port. Backward compatible in both directions.
I suggest a USB 2 type because there have been some problems with certain USB 3 devices, the USB 3 interface used isn't all that good in those certain devices. USB 3 is still fairly new where as USB 2 has been around for over 10 years.

  • How do I transfer files from my old MacBook Pro to my New MacBook Pro?

I am trying to transfer some files, not all, from my old MacBook Pro to my new MacBook Pro. I have tried to use Migration Assistant, but it doesn't let me choose what I want to transfer (only generic things like "users" and "files and folders"). I have tried to use Firewire. Now here is the funny thing. When I put my old mac in target mode it doesn't appear on my new mac anywhere. But, when I put my new mac in target mode, it pops right up on the dashboard and in finder. The problem is I have tried using my new mac as the target and just place the files into the icon, but the don't stay after I eject. I get a prompt that says downloading and when all files and apps are transferred I turn off my new mac then turn it back on and nothing. I've done search after search and repeated this process 3 times and nothing. Am I doing something wrong? Please help.

Time Machine will not "overwrite". New back ups are added to what is there, without erasing.
Connect the Time Machine back up, double click on the icon and navigate through its contents - the back ups are chronological, so you just select the date then go through the contents just like on any other drive. You can select any files you want and drag and drop on the new Mac's desktop (or anywhere else).
