Moving OS X server from a PowerPC to an Intel Machine?

I have OS X Server running on a G5 DP 2.5 GHz which looks like it will soon need a new logic board and/or power supply (a costly exercise).
I therefore am looking to get a new G5 (Intel) but was wondering how easy the migration is going to be, can anyone help with the following questions:
1) Will OS X server instal on the Intel (I don't think the Intel version was around when I bought it)??
2) Will migration assistant transfer all the server settings, users etc seamlessly
3) I will be installing the same OS X Server serial number on the new machine (and will delete of the old machine once migration complete), will this be an issue ie will they detect each other? Alternatively, should I migrate onto the installed OS X and then instal OS X server once all teh filews have been transfered?
4) Any other likely issues?

1: no. new box, new architecture, new distro, and I'd tend to expect a new payment made to Apple.
2: seemlessly? Donno. There have been issues with migration assistant reported in the past. There have been occasional cases reported here where migrated users need blow away a plist or three, or have encountered various (other) oddities. I'd certainly not experiment with the only copy of my data.
3: I'd expect different serial numbers here, given you'll certainly need an Intel distro and a distro newer than you have here, and also given the Mac OS X Server release that you'll probably be looking at upgrading to; this given the likely timing of this particular upgrade.
As for licensing, check with a Genius at your local Apple store around your plans and expectations here.
If you're upgrading an existing 10.4.10 Mac OS X client (on Intel) to 10.4.x Mac OS X Server (and not to another release), there's a [variant upgrade procedure|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305537] required; the currently-available Mac OS X Server is a couple of releases back, though there's a documented mechanism to upgrade a newer client to server without loosing the newer pieces and platform support from the client version.
Do ensure your disk backups are good, and current. It's been my experience that a power supply or motherboard failure can stuff up in-flight disk I/O writes; that you can potentially encounter a corruption of a write that is in flight when your server, um, commences its upcoming retirement.
Partition your disk and set up mirroring and such before you migrate and turn the users loose. The usual set-up tasks....
Do look at the price of an Xserve, as it includes an unlimited-client license for Mac OS X Server.

I do not think so, the only modification I have ever heard of like that was for the 2009 Mac Pros being converted to the capabilities of a 2010 Mac Pro. Sorry.
Does anyone else know for sure?

    IS THE SITUATION HOPELESS
I used Target mode to transfer files to a new i7  iMac running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 from an older Dual core Intel machine (EMC 2105) also on 10.6.8. but originally Tiger 10.4. The operation was successful and I ejected the disk icon from the new machine and powered down the old machine. When this was restarted the next day there was a grey screen with flashing Mac symbol alternating with a 'no entry' sign and occasionally a question mark.Keyboard and mouse were unusable so k inserted the original instal disc (No.1 for 10.4. with installer 1.0.4) which came with the machine in 2006 in an attempt to boot from this. The ensuing window said this was not possible and now it cannot be ejected.I have tried everything ! It offers Disk Utility and other options like Terminal but that doesn't work either.I 'repaired disk' and that was pronounced o.k. None of the various keystrokes at start up will work, and the computer will only offer the installer disc continually. The only option would seem to be is to erase the hard drive completely from the disc in the machine.I don't want to do this as there is still material which I need to recover. I think the drive has in some way been corrupted by using it in target mode, and I don't know if there are any other options to try.
Please tell me how to get this disc to eject !

Have you seen this type of problem before? I think it could be a serious issue for anyone in a similar position.
No; but then, I've not had occasion to use TDM. I've been using firerwire drives for over 10 years, both FW400 and FW800, with no issues except a bit of instability using a B&W G3 machine.
TDM should be safe. Using cautious, manual copying of files from the Target machine to the Host machine should not result in unexpected loss of files or damage to the Target drive's directories. It should behave exactly the same as if it were an external (to the Host) firewire drive.
    •  I don't suppose there is anything I can do to 'put back' lost items from a separate Time Machine drive which has an up to date backup on it.
There is probably a way to do that - seems to me that's one of the reasons for a Time Machine volume.
On the other hand, if the Time Machine volume is rigidly linked to the now-absent OS on the original drive, there may be no way to effectively access the files in the TM archive.
I know that using a cloned drive would work well in this instance.
I have no experience with Time Machine, so perhaps someone who has will chime in with suggestions.
With the machine in TDM with the other machine, have you tried running Disk Utility to see if you can effect repairs to the drive?

  • Moving SAP J2EE Server from C: to D: Drive

    hello,
Initially I had installed SAP J2EE in C:\. Later I realized that my C:\ drive is limited in space. I have plenty of diskspace in D:\. Now when I want to apply SAP J2EE patch, I am running into issues with space.
I know it could be done in unix to move stuff without impacting the runtime environment. Is it possibe to do it in Windows. Did anyone ever moved the installation from one drive to the other.
If so, what are the steps invloved ?
    A response will be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Sanjoy.

With the EP 6 release it should be alot easier than with EP 5 (which I did once and never again).
Basically what I think you must do is:
    1. Move all files
    2. Search for c:\usr\... references in config files and convert them to d:\usr\.. (best done manually)
    3. Update any installed services and shortcuts from the start menu
There shouldn't be any (at least not important) data in the registry, but you might do a quick search using regedit just to make sure.

  • Can't copy address book from Tiger PowerPC to Leopard Intel

I have been trying to help a friend who bought a new macbook and is trying to move the contents of his address book across to his new Macbook. I can't find the Vcards on his old computer and don't know how to go about finding them. Would it help if he upgrades his old computer to Leopard?
    Would appreciate any help.

no, I'm not saying that at all. please read my post. it says what you need to copy.
I already tried that but if did not read the V-cards properly perhaps because of the difference between Tiger and Leopard and one having an intel and the other not.
no, that is not a problem.

  • Move pair of 1 TB HDs from G5 PPC to new INTEL Machine?

I have had a workhorse PPC G5 for many years, but software upgrades demand I graduate to an Intel-based machine. Can I simply move the two 1TB Hard Drives from the old machine to a new one or are they incompatible? They are both about a year old.

They are compatible, but the partitioning map or tables (Apple PM) are not and need to be reformatted to GUID is all.
Better in FW case until you copy files you need and reformat before using internally. With 4 internal bays, you'll still have one free.
And skip Applications during Setup (or Migration) Assistant step and you should be fine, and then do fresh installs and avoid having to redo later.

  • Moving a KMS Server and Disabling KMS host caching

I am moving my KMS server from a 2003 server to a 2012 R2 server. I have KMS installed on the new server, the host keys installed, and I have forced several clients to check in to the new server to reach the activation limits. Here are my questions.
At one point (thru a vbs script) we forced quite a few clients to check into the old server. Now we want to make sure all clients check into the new server. Since the clients have cached the old KMS host (some forced and some thru auto discovery), will
disabling KMS host caching on the old server and removing the DNS record force all clients to contact the new server? If not, what is the best way to accomplish this?
    Russ

KMSclients which are configured for default auto-discovery, will re-discover via DNS in the event that they cannot contact the cached or discovered KMShost.
You could also consider adjusting the priority of the DNS records for OLDhost vs. NEWhost, such that the NEWhost has a higher priority. You might also consider disabling DNS auto-publishing for the OLDhost, and then delete the DNS RR for OLDhost.
For those clients which were "forced", if the OLDhost is statically configured in those clients, you'll need to reconfigure those clients, either back to auto-discover or statically repoint to NEWhost (whichever you prefer)
KMS host caching is different to statically configuring clients.
KMS host caching is intended to avoid excessive DNS queries, i.e. the client will cache the host name and only issue a query is that cached host is uncontactable.
A static configuration of the hostname, at the client, completely bypasses/disables the DNSlookup/discovery.

  • Can fonts from a PowerPC 10.4 be moved to a Mac pro 10.7?

Can fonts from a PowerPC-10.4 be moved to a Mac Pro 10.7

If it's a Type 1 PostScript font (that's they only way I have it), you need all of the pieces. For instance, here's Adobe's Avant Garde Gothic:
    Avant Garde Gothic.scr
    AvantGarBol
    AvantGarBolObl
    AvantGarBoo
    AvantGarBooObl
    AvantGarDem
    AvantGarDemObl
    AvantGarExtLig
    AvantGarExtLigObl
    AvantGarMed
    AvantGarMedObl
The first file is the suitcase of screen fonts. The rest are the associated printer fonts. You must have all of them together in the same folder in order for them to work. You can put them in a subfolder of the Fonts folder you put them in.

  • Can access a remote server from all locations except from my house

This is a very weird problem.
My home ISP is Xplornet. This is a rural "fixed wireless" set-up (antenna on the roof connected to the Xplornet modem). The Xplornet modem is connected to a Belkin router. The router connects wirelessly to my laptop.
The remote server (the office server) is connected to an Apple airport. The ISP is Bell, and we have a static IP.
Before we moved, I was with Rogers (cable Internet service). While with Rogers, I could connect remotely to my office server using the AFP protocol.
Now, here's the weird problem: Now that I am with Xplornet, I can connect to my server remotely from any location EXCEPT my house. I can go to a Starbucks and connect to my server. I can go on vacation in the U.S. and use the local WiFi to connect to my server. But I CANNOT connect from my house to the remote server.
I have spoken to Xplornet and they say it's an Apple problem (which is what every non-Apple tech always seems to say). Or, perhaps, they say, it's the local dealer (Sentel Communications).
Sentel says I need to pay for a static IP for my home (Huh?). Why would I need to pay for a static IP at home just so I can connect OUT to a remote server?
Is this somehow related to the Belkin router not letting me "out"?
Any thoughts and advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks for responding, Bob.
Below is the result of my Ping attempt, and port scans. I scanned 548, and 5003, which I use for FileMaker (which works fine from home), I don't use screen sharing. (I can confirm that both 548 and 5003 are open on Airport on the host machine.)
So, from my home (remote) location, here's what I get (IP: 74.xx.xxx.xx):
    --- 74.xx.xxx.xx ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0% packet loss
    round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 57.126/91.371/185.774/45.549 ms
    Scan of port 5003
    Port Scan has started ...
    Port Scanning host: 74.xx.xxx.xx
               Open TCP Port:           5003                    fmpro-internal
    Port Scan has completed ...
    Scan of port 548
    Port Scan has started ...
    Port Scanning host: 74.xx.xxx.xx
    Port Scan has completed ...
So, 5003 is OK, 548 is not. I have to conclude this is related to my home ISP in some way?
Unfortunately, the host server is running 10.3 (don't ask), which is not supported by Logmein. (I do use Logmein for a Windows machine on the same network, and I can connect to one area of the server via the PC, but not to the part I need, which might be the subject of a future thread.)
Regardless, being able to connect to my work server remotely from every location EXCEPT from my home is infuriating.
I just saw this thread about an ISP that has blocked port 548, although I always assumed the ports had to be open on the host side, but maybe not? (I have to confess, I do find the port stuff confusing.)
If my home ISP blocks 548, then I guess that would prevent me from remotely accessing the server from home?
If that is the case, is port 548 the only AFP option?

  • Moving Domain for iWeb from one computer to another

Have moved my website domain from Library in one computer running Leopard into Library in another computer running Lion.
Deleted default Domain in new Library, but when I open iWeb app the empty default Domain opens with nothing in it and returns back to Library folder in new Library. Even when I open Domain with my site directly from Library iWeb opens as a new app without my site. Everytime I delete the default Domain
    it returns.
How do I get the computer to recognise my site Domain in Library of computer running Lion? And to not keep recreating default empty Domain?
I have done this transfer before between 2 computers running Leopard and it works every time.
    Help! Please.....
    Gareth

As previously noted I got my Domain across to new computer running Lion and everything runs just fine
Editing my site hasn't altered except that now after pressing 'Publish', the edited site won't open and I am taken to the site of my Australian Server 'Big Pond' with a message saying that my site doesn't exist.
When I navigate to my site my edits have worked and the page opens normally.
    My site publishing settings are:
    'Publish to Mobile Me'
    Site name - gareth-sansom.com
The site though opens at http://web.me.com/gsansom/ (where it used to automatically open in after pressing Publish)
I have tried changing site name to that in 'Publish to Mobile Me' but then nothing works including publishing.
If I leave Publish to Mobile me as 'gareth-sansom.com' the publishing works, but I can't open my site after the publishing without navigating to it.
    Am I missing something here?

  • Remove Server from /private/Network/Servers?

I'm integrated with a Windows AD Network. We moved this user's home directory to another server but the old server still shows up in /private/Network/Servers and if the woman tries to save something to the old server instead of going to the server (since it doesn't exist anymore) it saves it to the hard drive under /private/network/servers/servername/directory
Reading online I read about something going into "dscl" and changing to /search/mounts or something like that but trying to use the "delete" command in there doesn't work.
    Anything you can tell me?

    Hi,
If you are under All Servers dashboard, you may right click on the server which you want to remove and select “Remove Server”. If you want to remove a server from a Server Group,
you may right click on the server which you want to remove and select “Remove Server from Group”.
Please note, you cannot remove the current server from the All Servers dashboard.

  • Moving calendar to server account

Weirdest thing just happened. I opened the system preference and clicked on Mail Calendars and Contacts. (This was the first time I'd been here since installing Mt Lion and I had iCloud set up already) keychain started asking me for permissions for a couple things to which I said deny because I didn't want to deal with that then. All of the sudden without me doing ANYTHING else calendar pops up and says "Moving calendars to server account..." Aught I didn't ask it to and now my laptop is hung after a few minutes of it looking like it was trying to copy somewhere. What happened and what should I do. Mouse moving very speratically like bearly enough to stay alive and copy bar is grey and not moving really don't want to loose my whole Calendar
