Moving over from LR4 to LR5

I have just bought a Panasonic GH4 and now LR4 won't support my RAW files.
What steps do I need to take
Do I need to Purchase LR5 and the latest Versions
Or can I just download it for free
What do I need to do with all my files in LR4 and how do I Transfer them over to LR.
If someone could give a proper workflow with this it would be appreciated as I am only a hobbyist.
Thanks

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 was first supported in Lightroom 5.5.
Unfortunately, support is never retrospectively added to older versions so you're faced with two choices:
Purchase the upgrade to Lightroom 5 (currently on version 5.7)
Pay and download here: Products, or
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all GH4 Raw files to DNG format then open the DNG files in Lightroom 4.

When importing catalogue from lr4 to new install of lr5, are there any traps for the unwary?

Just to be clear, your title speaks of "moving", there is no moving of photos involved in this process.
Your text speaks of "importing", there is no importing of catalog or importing of photos in this process.
Your LR4 catalog will be upgraded the first time you launch LR5, that's really all there is to it (you probably have to click Yes or OK when Lightroom asks if you want to upgrade)

You can't install 9.2.1 or earlier on any Mac that is only Mac OS X bootable. In fact you need to use the restore disks which came with those Macs to install 9.2.2 on those Macs. 8.6 is only possible to install on Macs which came with 8.6 or earlier. The 9.1 disk may be useful for your 1999 PowerMac G4, but won't be of any use for a 2006 Powerbook G4.

  • Lightroom catalog corrupt and unrepairable after migrating from LR4 to LR5. Can I send the compresse

My Lightroom catalog is corrupt and unrepairable after I migrated it from LR4 to LR5.  The only way I can use this catalog is by copy/pasting/renaming it.  Only after I do that, is Lightroom able to open the catalog.  When I close LR and allow the catalog to be backed up, the LR informs me that the catalog is corrupt and it fails to repair it.
Can I compress the catalog and send directly to Adobe for inspection?
    Thanks,
    Tim

Upgraded from LR4 to LR5.7. Apparently successful download on iMac27" 5K running OS X10.2. Collections that were clear in LR4 appear badly blurred when opened in LR5.7.  What's wrong?

    Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions.
John: I back up the catalogue (and optimize/check its integrity) every time I quit Lightroom - which is why excluding it from Time Machine isn't the end of the world. I did rename the catalogue early on in my troubleshooting process - as you say, I didn't like the fact I felt out of control of it.
I tried synchronizing a folder that had some flags: when I'd done there were three flags in the folder. (I have unclicked - and clicked and then unclicked - the 'unsaved metadata' checkbox in View Options: as I say, Lightroom shouldn't be displaying these flags at all.)
Rob: Thanks for understanding why I'm fretting! I've checked my XMP sidecars, as you suggest, and they have read and write privileges. I then checked the last-modified date on the XMPs that came up with flags after I'd synchronized that folder. One of them displayed the time I'd just synchronized the folder (it's one I haven't worked on apart from applying a blanket preset in LR2, and then a blanket update to PV2012 in LR4, as I've done to all the images I haven't yet worked on individually); the other two showed the time (I presume) I worked on them yesterday. I selected these three and applied command-S: they then showed, correctly, that they'd been modified a minute before. So far, that folder's now flag-free. (As I said in my original post, the flags sometimes do seem to vanish if I save enough times - and they're unpredictable, not necessarily appearing on the same images in a collection or folder as before I do I group save/clear conflict.)
Mollysnoot: I don't see how the Mac OS would be doing this (although who knows - I'm not a software expert). I don't have any other programs open that can modify images. And since these flags can reappear instantly when I've dealt with the conflict - before I've had time to take a breath, even - I don't think they represent any actual modifications.

  • Any tips for upgrading from LR4 to LR5

I am just about to attempt my upgrade from LR4 (student edition) to full-fledged LR5.   Any hints or tips on how to redirect LR4 directories, etc. to LR5?   Other tips for the install?   (Obviously, I've backed up my computer prior to starting.)
    Thanks!
    Rick

Your "full-fledged" Lightroom 5 will be no different than the student version of Lightroom 5, because there is only one Lightroom program. You'll have new features in Lightroom 5, of course. But don't expect anything extraordinary because there is no difference. All you have to do is install Lightroom 5. Since it is an upgrade, it will look for that serial number from your Lightroom 4, and then you will have to enter the new serial number for Lightroom 5. When Lightroom starts it will find your previous catalog and will offer to upgrade it to the appropriate format. The original Lightroom 4 catalog will be left as it was, and completely usable by Lightroom 4. After the upgrade process completes you should be able to see all the images and all the work that you did in Lightroom 4, but you will be using the new program. It's a very straightforward process.

  • Please help. Why aren't my hyperlinks moving over from one document to another?

Firstly I'm using Adobe InDesign 5.5
I have document A, which has over 50 pages.
Then document B, with over 40 pages.
All the pages on document B, I want to 'move' over to document A, so document A will now have 90 pages and I'll no longer need document B. The issue is, when I move the pages over, the hyperlinks I have throughout document B don't move over (which there are over 30 hyperlinks on certain sections of certain pages).
Now it seems like the only 'slow/safe' process of doing this, is to copy page 1&2 of Document B, and then 'paste in place' on document A, and then go back to B and copy pages 3&4. this is a long process...considering I have over 2,500 pages to get through.
Why aren't the hyperlinks moving over? When I go back to document A, I click on the hyperlink tab and it's blank.
It's really annoying and I'm trying to figure out why this is even happening and can't find any solution online.

You should save both documents before doing that with Save as into the same folder, so thel links will not change.
I would recommend to package your files after doing that.

  • Problems after upgrading catalog from LR4 to LR5

After upgrading a LR 4 catalog to LR5, I moved some files around between sub folders.  I then went to sync up the parent folder.  The dialog box said that I would be importing 12,000 photos and deleting 12,000 missing photos.  My folder structure for a ctalog is a parent folder named for the year and the sub folders with the date and shoot description.  I was synchronizing the parent (year) folder.  When it finished, the folder structure was correct and the photos were in their new(correct) folders.  However, all of my LR4 adjustments that had been made in LR4 were gone.  There was no history either.  It was like I was importing for the first time.
I upgraded the original catalog again and the photos were in the original locations just like the first time I upgraded.  I tried to sync an individual folder and it imported 50 new files and deleted 50 missing files.  Again the LR adjustments were gone.  Any suggestions on how to sync an upgraded catalog without losing my prior version adjustments?
    Mac OS X 10.9.2
    LR 5.3

Yes, synchronizing is not the tool you should be using in this case, when you move photos from one folder to another. The proper method is to reconnect your photos in Lightroom after you moved them via: http://www.computer-darkroom.com/lr2_find_folder/find-folder.htm. But your current catalog has lost its edit information, so this will not help on your current catalog. So ...
I hope you have a backup of the catalog file before you did the synchronization, or otherwise you will have to upgrade your LR4 catalog again. Open one of those and then reconnect as in the link.
As side advice, perhaps you might want to consider using an organizing technique that does NOT require moving phtoos/folders from here to there. You might want to consider using organizing and searching via keywords and captions and other metadata, which does not require moving photos, and does not require re-linking photos, and gives you the ability to place photos in more than one "category" (keyword), rather than with folders where a photo can be in at most one "category" (folder)

  • How to switch from LR4 to LR5

I bought LR5 box to update my 4 version. I could not get it to download. So I went to the trial version. I downloaded but it did not update my 4 version to 5 and I can not find it on my desk top. Can someone PLEASE help me figure this out how to get the 5 version to take over my 4 and all my presets and photos transfered. Thanks. frustrated grandma!

lr 5 will not replace your lr 4.  you can, if you want, you can use both at the same time on the same computer.
if you don't need both, you can uninstall lr4, but don't do that until everything is working in lr5 and you've mirgrated your lr 4 catalog and presets and whatever else.
check if lr 5 is installed.  if you have windows click start>control panel>programs>uninistall a program and search for adobe lightroom 5.  it will be just below lr 4 if it's installed.
if it's not installed, find your downloaded installation file(s) and install lr 5.

  • Published folder migration from LR4 to LR5

I have a published folder with about 400 photos in LR4 that I would like to bring over to LR5. How is this done?

OK, before trying to upgrade again, do a File > Open Catalog and point to the upgraded catalogue - it will usually have a -2 as below.
Does this catalogue show the published folder? If so, job done.
What I suspect is that if you did an Import from Another Catalog, LR would have needed to make an upgraded catalogue. It would then bring over the photos - but without the published folder data. Now, when you try to upgrade properly, that upgraded catalogue is still sitting next to your Lr4 catalogue and is causing the error message. But it is actually a perfectly-good Lr5 catalogue, the same as if you'd done an upgrade rather than import.
Once you're back on track, I would recommend cleaning up your catalogues in Explorer/Finder and becoming more familiar with what they are. For instance, I'd rename 4test-2.lrcat as Lr5 Master.lrcat and 4test-2 Previews.lrdata as Lr5 Master Previews.lrdata.

  • Error: Unable to Update Catalog while upgrading catalog from lr4 to lr5

I just recently installed Lightroom 5 from my new Creative Cloud account.  While accessing for the first time, it asks me to upgrade the lr4 catalog to lr5.  Everytime I run the process, I eceive the following message below.
I tried optimizing the lr4 catalog, but that diddn't work.  I saw another post saying to try upgrading the lr4 backup catalog, but that didn't work also.
Any suggestions?  Please help since I a newer user to Lightroom.
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Try this:
Make sure this checkbox is checked in the System/Sharing preference pane:
If it is, uncheck it and then recheck and try ordering again.
