Moving photos from iPhoto 6.0.2 to desktop or other files

When I select a photo and drag it to the desktop a small green circle with a white plus sign appears in the photo and when I release the mouse the photo is copied to the desktop. In random instances when I try to select and drag a phot to the desktop a small white circle with a diagonal slash in the circle (i.e. like a No-smoking, etc. symbol) appears in the photo and it will not allow me to drag and drop the photo. I have to restart the computer and then I am able to reselect the photo and drag and drop it. Anyone else having this problem or any suggestions on what I need to do to avoid having this problem? Thanks for any help!

Trevor:
Try the fix I suggested in my post above. That's because Disk Utility only works on files/applications that have receipts in the HD/Library/Receipts folder and not on the User folders. So if you run BatChmod on your iPhoto Library folder it may set things straight.
Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Moving Photos from IPhoto to the Picture Library

I'm a heavy IPhoto user and have over 9000 photos in it. The main reason I moved to IPhoto8 was its greater capacity. But I now find that IPhoto runs much more slowly and I constantly need to close IPhoto and start again. Before I add the thousand or so photos from our recent travels, I would like to move some of these photos out of IPhoto into my Photo Library on my Imac. Is this the best way to free up capacity? If so, how do I do it? I'd also appreciate any other hints on managing IPhoto capacity. Would adding extra RAM make a real difference? (I already have 1GB of Memory on my Imac.) Apologies if these are obvious questions.......

Essentially, I'm trying to find a way to avoid having IPhoto slow to the point of stopping while I'm working on my photos. When this happens, I close IPhoto and start again. This works fine, until the program slows and stops the next time.
The problem has only arisen since I have had between 8000-9000 photos on IPhoto8 (Initially I used the previous version and upgraded to IPhoto 8 to gain additional capacity). Most photos have been adjusted (exposure, cropping enhanced etc) and I've usually added titles and other details. I was surprised when this problem occurred, as I knew that capacity shouldn't be a problem with IPhoto8.
I have only used about half my available disk space, so that isn't the problem. This is why I thought of increasing the RAM.
Can I delete photos from IPhotos and retain them in the Picture Library? In the short term, this seems to be a possible "work around".
    Any other suggestions?

  • Moving photos from iPhoto in macbook pro to new iMac

We recently got a new iMac.  Pumped to move photos from 13" Macbook Pro to huge iMac, right?  Well this has been quite a crazy effort!  So far, here is what I have tried unsuccessfully:
    1) Moving iPhoto library (from the icon) to external hard drive and then moving that file onto the computer.  I cannot get it to move from the hard drive into my photo folder on the iMac.  I tried to just click it and upload the pictures but then only about half of a size of each photo shows up and is really screwed up.
    2) Tried by bluetooth (93gb).  Just froze up the Macbook Pro program trying to do that.
    3) Tried sharing wireless connection
    4) Tried hooking up an ethernet cord between the two.
What I run into over and over is that I cannot click and drag the iPhoto Library icon over to my iMac.
So any ideas?  Initially did all photo files over but it made two and three copies of each of them and my research of this has said to use the iPhoto Library icon.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

I may have just figured out part of the problem.  I was having trouble dragging files and discovered others were having the same problems through these forums.  Restarted the computer and bam...I can drag the file now!  Thought I was going to go crazy.  We'll see if this works ultimately.
    Thanks Larry

  • Moving photos from iPhoto to NAS Device

    Hello.
I'm having a difficult time copying photos from my library and then transferring them to my NAS device once I've edited my photos in iPhoto. It seems as though I can only transfer/move the iPhoto library file and not my actual photos. I use iPhoto 11 to edit photos and then would like to move those edited photos to my NAS device so I can view these photos on all my network computers. I have a new Macbook Pro Retina Display and my NAS device is a Synology ds212J. This device is a media server so I can view these photos on my tv and other connected devices. Does anyone know how I can accomplish the above? I'm new to the Mac environment and need some help with this problem. I'm sure there has to be a fix for this as it seems so seemless for my Windows computers to do the same.
    Thanks much.

    Think of it this way:
Open a file in a photo editor - say Photoshop, Acorn, Graphic Converter, whatever...
    Fix Red eye.
    Save.
What happens? The file containing the photo is edited. The Modification date is changed. There's no way back to the photo before the fixing of the red eye.
Try do that in iPhoto (or similar apps: Picasa, Ligthroom, Aperture)
Open a file... Well you can't. You have to import it to a database first. So, that done, now you view the photo.
Fix red eye. Okay. There's no 'Save' you just move to the next picture.
Now look at the file you imported. Notice anything about the modification date? It hasn't changed. Open the file in another app. Notice anything? Like the Red-eye isn't fixed...
iPhoto will never edit the original file. It's called version control. It means that you can always revert back to the original. It preserves the original like a film shooter preseves the negative.
You don't want that. You want to edit the original. So, use a photo editor, something that edits the original file, uses no database and works the way you want.
In order of price here are some suggestions:
    Seashore (free)
    The Gimp (free)
    Graphic Coverter ($45 approx)
    Acorn ($50 approx)
    Pixelmator ($50 approx)
    Photoshop Elements ($75 approx)
There are many, many other options. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store.

  • Moving photos from iphoto to a flash drive

Not sure what I'm doing here but I have a flash drive taht I am trying to move pictures from iphoto to. I'm still in Windows world I guess and am looking for the flash drive on the left side so i can drag and drop the photos into it but I don't see it anywhere. What am I doing wrong?? thanks.
    Rob

usually for me, things appear on the top right desktop. Or, click on finder> file, new finer window and if Finder pref's are set to show HD, then the thing should show there- ( from finder>file drop down> create new folder and drag the pics to that... AFTER  clicking on the thing so that is waiting for you

  • Moving photos from iPhoto to Dreamweaver?

We have been using iPhoto, together with Pixelmator, to process and store the art photos that we want to post to our website. Of course all the Dreamweaver reference books assume one is starting with Photoshop.
Exporting from iPhoto directly to Dreamweaver is awkward (thumbnails need to be resized, etc). Presumably we should first export the photos to some Adobe program.
We would want to be able to manipulate the photos in various ways, such as occasionally some resizing or cropping, overlaying a "sold" sign in the corner of some of the photos, etc., but would not need to do major editing.
This would be followed by export of thumbnails and full photos to Dreamweaver.
Which of the many Adobe programs would be best, as well as user-friendly, for such tasks?

I recommend Photoshop for optimizing photos.
The actions panel allows you to record a series of commands (scale, crop, adjust levels, etc...).  Then using the automate feature, you can batch process a whole folder of photos while you're getting coffee.  Photoshop Extended.

  • Moving photos from iPhoto to Bridge

Is there a good way to change from using iPhoto to Bridge on a mac? I tried creating a folder for Bridge and copying all the existing photos over, but it's a big mess. Each photo from 2013 went into it's own folder with labels that mean nothing. Help!

Is there a good way to change from using iPhoto to Bridge on a mac?
That depends on what you would define as good.
In basic the difference between iPhoto and Bridge is that iPhoto is a library based application storing different data and versions in a package file that by default show no subfolders, only a file (size depending on amount of photo's containing) called 'iPhoto Library' by default stored in your pictures folder.
Bridge is a browser that shows you the content of your disk, it can add metadata (file info, labels, rating etc) as well as rename the files. It enables you to move or copy them to other folders or locations. But for editing it needs other application which you can reach (primarily Photoshop) using the menu tools and choose PS / function you want or just open in ACR or PS.
The two are acting totally different but have the same goal, sorting and keeping overview of your images (or in case of Bridge also other files and folders).
If you are happy with the limited options iPhoto has for editing stay with it, it has also a pretty good function for faces and places, both are not able in Bridge.
But if you need more editing and sorting options switch to Bridge and PS.
The quickest way in my opinion is to go to Finder and open two windows. In one create a main folder where you can point Bridge to (using the folder panel) and in the other select the folder  Pictures/iPhoto-library.
With your right mouse button click on this file you get a menu with the option to show the package content. click on that and a new window opens with the content of the iPhoto library in folders.
In latest versions there is a folder called 'masters' If I remember it also used to be called originals in previous versions. In this folder are your original files stored in folders per year you have shot them in. (these folders have a lot of subfolders but for now forget about this).
Copy those year folders (copy, don't move because then you loose them from iPhoto which you should only do when all is save and you are only working in Bridge so keep them as back up in iPhoto for now)
Then point Bridge to a year folder in your new created folder as per above. You will get a bunch of folders so now use menu view / show items from subfolders to open all the subfolders with their images and let Bridge build its cache first.
You can use the sort option as you like and if you wish you can also batch rename the images with the shot date in front (yyyymmdd) and a sequence number (menu tools / batch rename, explore the many options first).
You can choose to move all the images of 2013 to the main 2013 folder to bypass the subfolder tree, etc etc, many options.
Be sure to have a proper back up of your files before starting to experiment.
Sadly enough labels are always application specific and seldom interchangeable and iPhoto uses a separate database to store the ratings in so they are not written to the file itself and you loose also ratings.
The other option is to sort all labels / ratings in iPhoto, then select the photos per rating and use the export option (choose original for export option) to predestinated folders (per rating) and then apply those ratings again in Bridge.

  • Moving photos from iphoto to EHD & deleting from iMac

Okay, simple question here (i'm hoping for a simple answer!I
I am really confused.  All i want to do is move my iphoto photos onto my external hard-drive (and be able to access them individually through preview or whatever in the future, not back through iphoto).   I want to delete them off my internal hard-drive so that I have more space.  From what I am reading on discussion boards, when you move the iphoto library over it kind of moves it over as a whole and when I access it again it pulls it all back up through iphoto.  I don't need to do that. I just want to store the photos as if they were photos I would pull off the internet and stick em in a folder on the desktop (if this makes sense) .... I don't want it to be saved as a LIBRARY on the EHD, just all the individual photos.
I hope I am making sense here....
So anyway, my question is basic -  How do I move the PHOTOS to an EHD and delete them off the IHD and "start fresh" with nothing in my iphoto...
I thought if I looked in the file i'd find a list of ALL the images that were imported and stored into iphoto and that I could SELECT all and go - but apparently it's more complicated than that.   If I move that "iphoto library" file onto an EHD, when I go to access them on there are they going to pull up through iphoto or just as photos in a folder and I can individually click on them through there?
Sorry i'm all over the place with this question I just wanna make sure I understand correctly - if anything I will just head up to apple and ask someone
    Thanks!

If you plan on not using iPhoto in the future you can do the following:
1 - open the iPhoto Library package with the Finder:
Locate the Originals folder (or the Master's folder if you're using iPhoto 9 (11) and drag it to the EHD. This folder contains all of your original files in subfolders representing the Events they were in in iPhoto.  They will be grouped together as they were imported.
Once you are sure that you have all of the photos in the Originals/Masters folder on the EHD you can drag your iPhoto Library package to the trash and empty it.
NOTE:  you will lose any keyword, titles and comments you have added to those photos in iPhoto.

  • Moving photos from iPhoto 9.4.3. to  iPhoto 9.5.1

I have photos in iPhoto on an old hard drive; there were saved with iPhoto 9.4.3. I want to move them to a new laptop that has iPhoto 9.5.1 but I am unable to open the old library on the new laptop. I seem to need an update that I can't access. Any ideas of how I can extract the photos and save them on the new hard drive? (I have the old hard drive connected externally at the moment.)

You should be able to copy the iPhoto Library to the new laptop and open it directly with 9.5.1 -- the following has instructions on how to open a new library: iPhoto '11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries

  • How to export photos from iPhoto to external hard drive keeping Events structure (files and titles)

    Hello!
I’ve been looking for a Automator application that does this for quite a while now.
Basically I want to have an Automator application that saves a copy of my iPhoto pictures in a folder, inside Finder. Like a backup. Later on, I can save those “folders and files” on my external hard drive.
What I want it to do is this:
    1) Export photos from a selected Album or Event on iPhoto. Using as title: “Event name” – “number” (I mean the number of the file: 1, 2, 3 …)
    2) Save them in a folder in Finder that I want.
    3) Organize the photos in different folders, the same way they are in iPhoto.
The idea I had, was that it would do this automatically every time I launch iPhoto, as if it was synchronizing the photos into that folder.
And then, every time I connect my hard drive, it copies these “real” folders into my hard drive.
Is that possible? If yes, could you help me creating it, or tell me how I can do so myself, or where to download something like it?
Thank you a lot! Kind regards,
    xanacarfran2008

Is this waht you want to do?
It's built into the File Export function of iPhoto 9 (11).  Select what every photos you want and use that option to put each photo in a folder with the Event title it came from as in this test of six randomly picked photos:

  • I can no longer drag and drop my photos from iPhoto to external drive or desktop :(

My husband was using the laptop and I'm afraid he may have deleted the original pictures on the hard drive.  I can see the thumbnails of all of my pictures but I can't do anything with them.  I also have the photos in Photoshop Elements and only see a ? on the thumbnail.  When I try to reconnect it says it can't find the file.
I am new to using a Mac as well as any of the software so I'm at a loss as to what to do.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

YOu're not looking in the right palce. That's inside the iPhoto Application.
You need to look inside the iPhoto Library
    As I sid above:
Go to your Pictures Folder and find the iPhoto Library there

  • Upgraded to Photo from iPhoto had 2 libraries can't find other

I had a problem with my Macbook pro and took it to a repair center.  They had to remove iPhoto and reinstall.  When they did there were 2 libraries.   One did not have all my projects and I have been working to get organized before Photo.   I did the latest update to Yosemite last night and this morning Photo was there.   Asked which library I wanted to use and I chose original.  I looked for the other and cannot find. That one has my Photo stream.   I really  need these.
It was my understanding that iPhoto was going to be still available.  How do I get these back?

Just like you'd change libraries in iPhoto.  Launch Photos with the Option key held down and select the correct iPhoto Library in the next window that you want to convert.

  • How can I export a RAW photo from iphoto to anywhere without it changing into a jpg?

How can I export a RAW photo from iphoto to anywhere (PSE, or desktop) without it changing into a jpg???

See if any of this info will help:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.  3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 9 the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
NOTE: If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window".  That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu).  This way you get the best of both worlds.

I recently moved all my photos from iphoto to Aperture. I had several iphoto books and cards in my project file. When everything was moved to Aperture I can't find any of the books or card projects. Are they gone or can they be restored?

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto
