Moving Photoshop catalog from PC to Mac - stalls at 'backup catalog step' - just keeps spinning with no action

I am attempting to move all my Photoshop Elements catalogs from an old PC to a new Mac; followed the online instructions and made good progress converting catalogs to Elements 12 (from 6) until I got to the step of 'backing up catalogs so I can load them on an external heard drive.  That's where Photoshop stalls - just spins and no action.  Any idea how to complete this so I don't lose all those catalogs in the transition?

stop the backup and try repairing and optimizing the catalog in the catalog manager (file>manage catalogs)

As long as your license supports both platforms you should only have to download the Mac version and install/activate using your serial number.  If you need help finding a link to download the file, please indicate the PSE version you need.

If it's not a third party issue, follow the instructions here.
Quit the MAS if it's open.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left then open the Library folder then the Caches folder.
Move the com.apple.appstore and the com.apple.storeagent files from the Caches folder to the Trash
From the same Library folder open the Preferences folder.
Move these files Preferences folder to the Trash: com.apple.appstore.plist and com.apple.storeagent.plist

Just did the updates requested a few days ago and now it will not complete the turn on process??  Please help

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

    Hi mansons67992701,
No purchase is required to install Flash Player.  The offer you're seeing is optional.  There should be a yellow 'Install Now' button on the bottom right of the page. Is the button not displaying?  Please post a screenshot of the page (How to post a screenshot in the forum).

  • Moving my catalogue from windows to mac with photos on network storage

    Hi
I've been using LR for a while and have a catalogue of about 15,000 photos.
I import my camera files to the windows vista machine but periodically move them over to my network attached storage (linux host with USB drives) where I have more space and file backup available.
I want to move the catalogue from the windows PC onto my new Macbook as I'll be moving to that for all my photography work.
So how do I move the catalogue onto the Mac and retain the links to the photographs that are on the external drive.
Would it be easier to move all the files back on to my Vista hard drive and then export the catalog with the negatives or can I export the catalog and somehow relink the files?
I've got Lightroom 2.7 installed on both machines and I can access the network drive where the photos are stored from my MAC
    Thanks
    Colin

    Hey Colin,
Well, I didn't have a problem with that when i moved my main editing from PC to mac.  I just backed up everything onto the fileserver, then loaded it onto the mac.  It opened just fine.  To "find" files again, simply right click on the left hand side menu where it shows the question mark of the missing folder, and it will let you browse to find it.  So finding new drive locations for the top level folder is easy, and the rest fell into place automatically.
I routinely backup my catalog and images onto a portable drive, which I then use to edit on my laptop.
One thing that makes it work, I think, is that I put my catalog files and image files into one subdirectory, and export the whole subdirectory onto the portable.  Then told the PC to always load that portable disk as the same drive letter...  That let me open the laptop LR and tell it where the catalog was, and always works the same.
This may not be what you've asked, and if it isn't, sorry!
    Cheers!

  • Moving iTunes library from PC to Mac using external hard drive

    Hi there,
I recently bought myself a MacBook Air. This is my first Apple computer as I'd always used Windows before. On my old computer (running Vista), I built up a huge iTunes library. I really want to move this over to my Mac but there are two things which are making this a bit more complicated than it needs to be:
    1. I want to keep all of my playlists, play counts, date added etc.
    2. I don't want the songs to be stored on the computer, I want them kept on an external hard drive. So the library will show all the songs but I need to actually have the external hard drive plugged in to play them. Also saves me a **** of a lot of precious Mac space.
I have read a few things about how to do this so I'm a little along the way. I consolidated all my music files on my old computer and copied them over to the Hard Drive. But from here I just can't get it right. Assuming I've done nothing from this point, what would be the next steps you would take to make points 1 and 2 happen? I will try again based on your instructions but if it doesn't work then I come back and specify at what points it isn't working.
I would be ever so grateful for some guidance on this.
    Cheers

Did you close iTunes on your old computer before you tried to copy it?
If that is not the case right click on the itunes Library.itl in finder.
    Usually found in username/Music/iTunes
Select Get info and in the box that appears on the left scroll down to the bottom and check the permissions.
When that is resolved it should just copy over

  • Moving iTunes library from WIN to MAC os X with Parallels desktop

    Hi Everyone,
I just move from PC to MAC ! I would like to synchronize my itunes library (music and appli) with my iPhone / iPad in the new environment. I'm still using Win 7 under Parallels desktop under Mac os.
What is the best solution ?
Best regards and thank you for your attention and answer. Vincent

I don't think you can do this without using the Consolidate function (which requires you to have "Keep iTunes Music folder organised" and "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" checked).
However, if you were willing to accept a slight modification to your present set-up I think something could still be done. First you need to look at this article :
    http://lifehacker.com/software/itunes/geek-to-live--how-to-move-an-itunes-librar y-from-a-pc-to-mac-and-back-242468.php
Assuming you've followed that route, you now have all your WAV files in iTunes. Here you can adapt the Genre tag to sort / create playlists from not only what iTunes puts in there, but your own additional Genre information also (for example I've combined all my Soul R&B and Disco genres by adding the SRBD suffix to each separate genre then using that suffix to pull them all up if I want). I also use the Comment tag to store release date (or in my case, Chart Entry date, but it's the same principle).
Bottom line, I don't think you can exactly replicate your current setup, but I think you can modify it.

Hi I am trying to import photos into iPhoto using two Panasonic cameras both Lumix (DMC TZ3 and DMC FZ30). Worked in the past no problem, I upgrade system when prompted and am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 with iPhoto 9.1.5.  When I attach cable from camera to Mac with the DMC TZ3 I get the spinning ball and nothing else and have to force quite and restart to access iphoto again without the spinning ball, with the DMC FZ30, when I plus in the cable I get an icon on the desktop and can go into iphoto and import the photos that way.  When the photos have been imported I get the spinning ball again and have to restart the Mac to access iphoto without the spinning ball.  Photos do import though.
Can anyone help, a really stupid, non-techie person who has no idea what she is doing, please?
