Moving picture from laptop hard drive to larger external hard drive

I am not changing anything in my system.  I am using windows 7 and will continue to.  No change in elements version (10).  Please give me a step by step instructions on how to move my pictures from my computer hard drive to an external hard drive (this will NOT be a back up) but the primary locaton for my pictures.  I will keep elements program on my computer and when I want to work on my pictures or download more pictures from my camera  I will connect to the external hard drive.

A few questions
When I drag and drop my pictures am I looking at my pictures in elements organizer?
No, there are two ways to see your folders in PSE11 and PSE12 :
By default, it's the 'My Pictures' view. It shows a flat list of all the folders containing images registered in the catalog; all the folder of the last level, without the tree organization. You may have missed (like many, many users...) the 'Pictures' view which you obtain in clicking on the small yellow icon in the title bar of 'My Pictures'. You are shown all your folders and subfolders, all your different drives. It's very close to the folder view of Windows explorer, and you can do most of the operations you would do in the explorer.
You'll understand better if you take the time to play with the 'Pictures' view, where you can collapse or expand subfolders, or right click to show 'display all folders' when they are collapsed.
Let's say you have all your pictures under the default 'Pictures' folder of Win7. You should see the list of your drives in the lower part of the same left panel.
I suppose you don't want to change the default 'Pictures' location in Win7. If your external drive has the letter F:, you'll create a new master folder : 'F:/My Pictures bis' for instance. To test the process, you'll select one of your folders under Pictures, drag and drop on F:/My Pictures bis. Then you can check the result by viewing your pictures in different order, by testing your tags, albums etc. All should work exactly the same as before as long as your external drive is plugged in. (If it is not, you'll get 'missing files' warnings which will disappear if you plug in your external drive).
When you are satisfied with the process, you can move other folders (their subfolders will follow).
You could move only the upper level 'Pictures' folder of Win7 in a single step, but you'll feel more secure by doing this in several moves, since moving a big amount of files takes a long time (not longer than a move via the explorer,  moving a library of 150 GB like mine requires maybe 2 hours...)
Since you are on Win7, be sure to give all the access rigths to your external drive...
Another Windows trick : the catalog will remember and register the letter drive, F: in our example.
If you plug-in another  accessory in the meantime and the drive is now assigned G:, you'll have problem.
The best way to avoid such a case would be to assign a letter like M: so that your external drive will be recognized in all cases.

For some reason, my computer will not let me drop my pictures from the Iphoto location to my external hard drive.

The drive is formatted for Windows. To write to it from a Mac, you will either have to reformat it or install third-party software to enable writing to an NTFS volume (not recommended.)

I'm trying to transfer my pictures from my iPhoto library to my external hard drive. I dragged the iPhoto Library folder into the drive and after waiting a while it says "Error Code -36 The finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'iPhoto Library' could not be read or written". I need to free up space asap, what should i do??

Yes, the Old Master file has a folder for each year where I find all photos from that specific year. I am attaching a screen shot of the file.
In the meantime i have managed to download all photos (it did not download any video files though in mpg, avi, 3gp, m4v,mp4 and mov format) to a new iphoto library. Unfortunately the photos are quite mixed and often doubled up. I ma considering to purchase iphoto library which checks all duplicates in iphoto. this will save me a lot of time. What do you think?

  • Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk

I have a Network Drive where I'm used to putted all my iMovie08 files.
I'm start using iMovie09 and i'm no longer able to have my *files/library in a network drive*. Did apple remove this functionality? If this is true this is unbelievable because now a days everything goes to network storage. On iTunes i can have my library virtually anywhere. I need to have the same behavior when i'm using iMovie.
    Can someone help me?
    with my best regards,

Copying or moving video from your Event Library to an external hard disk
If you want to save space on your computer’s hard disk, you can move your stored video in your Event Library to a compatible external hard disk connected to your computer with a FireWire or USB 2.0 cable.
You can also copy Events to another hard disk. You might do this, for example, if you want to create a duplicate copy of your video library or an Event on a friend’s hard disk.
NOTE:When using an external hard disk with iMovie, make sure it has been formatted as Mac OS Extended (Journaled).

    - If i understood correctly, the solution you propose will replace completely my hard disk library with NAS location.
    - What i need (because when i'm travelling i dont have my NAS) is to have both. My hard disk library and the ability to copy/move (drag & drop within iMovies09 ) events and projects to my NAS at my description as i use to do on iMovies08.
And yes all my NAS locations appears with and yellow flag on iMovies09.
    best regards,
    Paulo

  • How do I put all my music and pictures from my macbook air to an external hard drive ?

My macbook air is already full - I transfered everything from my desktop as soon as I got home with my new laptop.  As it is already full, I would like to put all my pictures and all my music on a external hard drive.  I am unsure how to do that.  I've 'slide' the file to the external hard drive, but now, my computer is bizarre.  If I'm in iphoto, I can see photos, but they then dissapear, etc.  It's just bizarre and I feel this is not normal.

To transfer your music to an external drive see this knowledgebase article from Apple. For iPhoto, see this article. This is doable but the downsides are (1) you can only use iTunes or iPhoto when you are connected to your external drive. If you forget and launch the program without the drive connected you'll see nothing. Even worse, if you aren't careful (2) you might forget and download photos or music while the external drive isn't connected and then you have a mess.

  • Moving pictures from laptop to iPad

Trying to move pictures from laptop to the iPad. Made the mistake of putting them here in the first place, but now I have the adapter to connect to my tv so we can show pictures to folks on a bigger screen.

Another way. You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)

  • Can I download music and pictures from 2 different MacBooks onto one external hard drive?

I have looked around for the community, but have not found an answer here.  Both my wife and I have 2 seperate MacBooks, but we wanted to put all of my pictures and music and all of her music and pictures onto one external hard drive.  I read on another board that we can, but only if we purchase a Mini.  Is it possible to do that without having to purchase a Mini?  Or is purchasing a Mini the only way to be able to do that?  Thanks in advance for any replies!

There is no reason that you cannot use a common external HDD for your communal data.  Naturally you would have to disconnect it from one MBP and then connect it to the other when you wish to access the data or perform a download.
Any compatible external HDD will do, but make certain that you format it in Disk Utility to Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    Ciao.

  • Moving pictures from laptop to EHD, keeping photoshop elements 10 on laptop need more space

I have asked this question in another forum and came so close to getting a resolution but the person was not familar with photoshop elements 10.
He suggested a drag and drop method but could not give me any specific step by step directions.
    Can anyone help me?
Please read my previous question posted I believe it was Sept 25 or close to that time.

    Thank you for your response.
Can you explain step by step how to drag and drop within the elements organizer.
The directions that I was given by someone in my previous post was for later elements.  I have elements 10.
Does anyone have any help with making sure pictures do not get corrupted in the transfer?  I have a lot of pictures to transfer to the new EHD and do not want to have to go through my pictures one by one on my back up to find the picture and get on the new EHD
I have only had nightmares when changing to an updated version of PSE or to a new computer even though I have followed the directions on the photoshop web site.  I am so so afraid that this will be an even bigger nightmare  because I can find no step by step directions on how to do this.

  • Recently moved itunes/iphoto libraies to new, larger external hard drive...

Had large itunes/iphoto libraries that had resided on an external hard drive connected to my imac. These were backing up to a time capsule. Recently moved both libraries to a new, larger external hard drive. When Time Machine goes to back up, it is now trying to back up everything again, not just anything that is new. This is about 300 GB of music/movies/photos that were already backed up, and it is now trying to completely backup all this again. 2 300 GB backups will take up a lot of my TC. Should I just let it go? Do I have a possible issue with space? Just want to be sure I do the right thing....

  • HT1751 i bought a new, larger external hard drive. copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive. iTunes will not start or run unless old hard drive plugged in.??

I bought a new, larger external hard drive. I have my iTunes library on the external drive instead of C: drive, Using Windows 7.
I copied my itunes library from the old drive to the new one, changed the libarary location in Edit/Preferences/Advanced to the new drive.

If I disconnect the old drive iTunes shuts down.
    Any ideas. ??

    Hello kskip,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your new external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the new external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your old one:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your new external drive.

  • Exporting music from my Itune program to an external hard drive

I have a large external hard drive built by iomega. I have about 500 gigs of music in the AIFF format. I would like to burn new music from CDs or from Itunes and export it to the external hard drive.
I want this external hard drive to be my main library. As I add and move music to my Ipod, I want to use Itunes on by laptop.
    How can I do that?
How can I make sure that the music that I download is in the AIFF format?
    Thank You

If you go to the "Advanced" section of the iTunes preferences, you can specify a location for your media folder. That's where new music goes. If you want to copy your current music to that folder, after you specify it in the preferences screen, you can select "Library" - "Organize" from the "File" menu (in iTunes 9) and then click on the organize button. That will copy music to your new external drive. Once it's done that, you can go back in Explorer and (a) confirm you r music was copied like you wanted it to; and (b) remove the music from your laptop's hard drive, now that it's on your external drive.
How can I make sure that the music that I download is in the AIFF format?
If you mean music that you extract from your CDs, go to the "General" section of "Preferences" and click on "Import Settings".
If you mean the music that you purchase from iTunes Store or other online services, you'll have to use whatever file format they offer. You can convert it to other formats, but you'll possibly lose quality when you do that (and you certainly won't gain quality).

Is it a USB hard drive?  USB hard drives have the problem of not giving full speed if they are hooked up on the same bus as keyboards and mice.  Double check your profiler to make sure that is not a problem.  If it is Firewire, make sure there aren't other firewire devices in use at the same time.  I recommend not only keeping a Time Machine backup, but also a clone, and if you do use Time Machine, to make sure the Time Machine drive or partition is at least twice the size of the original drive.
