Moving pictures & catalog to newly installed second hard drive

Hi!
I just checked John's file (http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos_1) on moving files. My friend, a real non-technical guy, had a second drive installed on his computer. Up to now he only had one physical drive with C: and D: logical drives. All his pictures are sitting on the D: drive and there is nothing else on that drive.
I am supporting him remotely in Vancouver, BC from Austria (with logmein.com).
The new drive, 500 GB, is formatted and the chap installing it gave it the drive letter J:
My questions:
1) I change the drive letter D: to say X:, change the new drive's letter to D: and then do a disk copy from from X: to D: will this work?
2) Have my friend do a normal backup to his external USB drive and then do a restore with "Restore to original folder location" to the new J: drive and he uses from now on J: drive. Check that the Preferences are set correctly.
3) Simply move with Organizer all files to the new J: drive, leaving the catalog on the D: drive.
4) Any other good ideas? My friend has about 9,000 pictures on the file, probably quite a few disconnected ones.
Thanks and have a nice day!
Alexander
(Waiting for October 9th and PSE 8 as announced on Amazon. Surely John you soon will have another long list of items to add to your index! GGGGG!)

Alexander,
Using Display > Folder Location view to move the photo folders is the most straightforward way of moving the photos to a new drive, as described in the FAQ you referenced:
http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/photoshopelements-6-7-faq.htm#_Move_your_photos
The question remains of what to do with the catalog folder:
1. Is it on the C drive (where it usually resides) or the D drive?
2. If it's on the C drive, there's no harm in leaving it there -- it uses relatively little space.
3. If it's on the D drive, and your friend doesn't mind leaving it there, then leave it there.
4. If your friend really wants to move it from the D drive (e.g. so he can free up that drive and use some partitioning tool to merge D back into C), then he'll need to move the catalog folder:
a. If he's on PSE 7, he can safely move the catalog folder using File > Catalog > Move.
b. If he's on PSE 6 and he doesn't have any projects (e.g. slideshows) or files archived to DVD/CD, he can safely move the catalog folder using File > Catalog > Move.
c. Otherwise, he'll have to use the backup/restore method (rather than Display > Folder Location view) to get the catalog folder moved along with the photos to the J drive.

    Hi,
You need two cables, one is a sata cable:
    http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30305659/706331346/StarTech-com-6in-SATA-to-Right-Angle-SATA-Serial-AT...
This cable is only for data and connects the hdd to the SATA connector on the motherboard.
The other cable is for power:
    http://www.itpartsdirect.com/startech-15-24cm-4-pin-molex-to-sata-power-cable-adaptor.html
This connects the hdd to the PSU.
You can also buy a combo cable like this:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00064GBT4/?tag=hydra0b-21&hvadid=9550951989&ref=asc_df_B00064GBT4
All you have to do now is to connect the hdd and that's it. Make sure that the primary drive with the operating system is connected to the primary SATA connector (I think there are numbers 1, 2, 3..)

  • Can I install second hard drive on PC?

Hi. I just wondered whether I can install a second hard drive on my PC.
The present Sata hard drive has 640 GB capacity.
If there is a spare port for a second hard drive, is there a maximum capcity limit?
And would any make of Sata 3.5" hard drive be suitable? I would be grateful for any advice.

  • Problems installing second hard drive and second DVD recorder

I have tried about every combination of tricks to install a second hard drive.  I want to add a 250GB, WD IDE hard drive to my 3000J 115 7387A32 on the IDE channel.  I have set up the bios then added the drive and the reverse but cannot get computer to boot in either case.  It locks on the first screen where is says hit Enter to.... Enter makes the text go away, but nothing after. I am trying to install it as a single drive on the secondary IDE channel.
I know the HD is good as I removed it from another computer.  It does have Win XP on it.  I will format it using Vista IF I can get it installed.
Basically, I am having the same problems within stalling the second DVD, which is SATA.

Your initial hard drive should be jumpered as Master. When you install a second hard drive it must be jumpered Slave. There should be a diagram on the case of the HD showing the jumper locations.

    Hi,
Your PC has a hard drive cage that will accomodate two drives.  This HP How-to document starting at Removing a Drive a hard drive will show you the process for removing the hard drive cage.
If you still want to use the Expansion Bay then you will need a 5.25" to 3.5" adapter bracket. NewEgg.com would carry such a bracket.  You will also need a SATA data cable.  This HP How-to article will give you an idea on how to use the Expansion Bay for a 5.25" device.  Check up by the existing optical drinve for a spare SATA power connector.  If one is not available then you will need to use a SATA power splitter.

  • How do I make a newly installed IDE hard drive become my start up drive?

I bought a 120GB Maxtor hard drive and installed it correctly in my G4 Sawtooth. I shut down and restarted. A screen prompt telling me it can't read a disc asks me to initialize it so I did just that. The second hard drive is now on my desk top. I used disc utility to erase and format it Apple Partition Map as Mac OS Extended journaled. I would like to make this new 120GB drive the start up drive and erase the other Maxtor 27GB drive to make it a slave. Is this too much to do? Should i just leave it with the 27GB drive as the start up drive and retain the 120GB drive as a back up slave drive. Any pointers? I was told to format the drive then mirror copy it. I don't know how to do that operation, I am really quite new to this. Please advise.

You need to rejumper the drives - new one to Master, old one to Slave. See Power Macintosh G3 and G4: IDE Master and Slave Support and Configuration
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=24342
Use the System>Startup Disk preference window to designate the new drive as the startup drive.
For backup/clone (mirror), you can use the freeware CarbonCopy Cloner @ http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html , or the freeware SuperDuper @ http://www.shirt-pocket.com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html , or the freeware IBackup @ http://www.grapefruit.ch/iBackup/index.html , or the Restore function of Disk Utility included in OS X.

  • Problems installing second hard drive in HP Pavilion M7-1015dx laptop.

I just bought a new HP Pavilion M7-1015dx. I have successfully installed an SSD drive as the primary hard drive and now I want to use the 1tb hard drive that the computer came with as data and install it in the second hard drive bay. I have a cable that I used from my old HP DV7 when I had a second hard drive but I am having issues with my M7-1015dx laptop.
When I plug the sata cable into the second connector on the laptop and attach my hard drive (I have tried several hard drives) and go to power the laptop on, the power light just blinks a few times. Now I know there is something wrong for I just purchased the laptop two days ago... I got the idea to try the cable that I used to plug into the second connect to check and see if I plugged it into the first and I got the same issue, power light blinking. So I am wondering if it is the cable... is this possible? Are there different rated sata cables? I also tried the cable the came with my new laptop to make sure that it just wasn't the second port - I tried plugging it in to the second port with a hard drive attached and the laptop this time turned on but asked for a bootable disk because it requires boot disk to be in the 1st hard drive bay connection which I knew. I just want to give all the information so that I can get this fixed.
    Please help me

    Hey Brother-Brad,
I'm sorry you're running into issues installing a second hard drive. Your issue may not be the cable. Do you have a working hard drive installed currently with Window on it?
    If so,
    1. In Windows, Click the Start button.
    2. Type 'hard disk'
    3. Click on 'Create and format hard disk partitions' (aka Disk Management)
    4. Look at Disk 0 listed at the bottom in the middle. Does it say Basic or Dynamic?
    5. If it says Basic, right-click it and select Convert to Dynamic.
Hard drives must be set as Dynamic for dual hard drives to be recognized.
Let me know the results when you get a chance

  • How to install second hard drive in Satellite A200-1BW?

I see my new Satellite A200-1BW has two hard drive bays,on looking into the second bay I cannot see how a second drive can be fitted as the plug in socket appears to be missing.
What parts do i need to fit to fit a second drive as they are held in stock by my local computer outlet and are quite cheap, can anybody advise me on part numbers etc of the bits I need.
    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi,
there are many different models of your machine on the market and some of them have a second drive, some of them not. If you bought a model with one drive then you will only be able to install ONE drive because your model was only intended to have one drive.
And even if you solder a connector to it or attach it in any other way then you dont know if the bios supports the second drive.
My suggestion on it: obtain a USB-HDD and store your data on that drive. Would be making more sense then spending a lot of time on investigation to find out that your mainboard is not able to handle a second drive.
    Cheers

  • Installing second hard drive - boot problem

I have a Maxtor SATA hard drive that I had installed in my G5. It is use only for client project files - no operating system or programs have ever been installed on this drive. It worked great in my G5. I recently upgraded to an Intel Mac Pro and so I pulled the drive and installed it. With the drive installed it won't even boot. All it does is keep repeating the start-up chime. I tried it in several of the open bays and it did the same thing every time. When I pull it back out, it boots without a problem and when I put it back in the G5 it is recognized without a problem. Any thoughts of what could be the problem and solution? I really need to get this back, as I mentioned it contains all my client projects.
    Thanks.

Disk Utility - Erase (drive, not volume) and make sure it is now GPT/GUID and not old Apple Partition Table format.
Even though it is data only, there can and are some problems (the older it was last formatted the more so perhaps).
Just pull the data off if needed. Handy to have a FW drive case for SATA laying around.
Migrating OS and apps from G5 to Intel is full of potential pitfalls.
Depending on the drive age, size, performance, I'd probably go for a WD Caviar 640GB $75 to transfer files onto, and then wipe the Maxtor and use it for an emergency backup drive off which you can run Disk Warrior and such.

  • Newly installed additional hard drive - queries??

This is a similar question asked recently!
My G4 has become unstable somewhat ever since I added the extra HD. I checked the cable and jumper formation and they seemed ok.
I have now removed the HD and the stability has returned.
But I am a bit mythed to why the unstability had occured?
    One question please...
The Master HD is using OSX 10.3.9.
Does the Slave HD have to be exactly the same?
Because I am not sure if the Slave is at OSX 10.3 or 10.3.9

HI! I wrote that because although I always put the master on the end Apple doesn't think it makes any difference as per THIS Apple Doc which states
"It makes no difference which connector on the ATA/IDE cable is used in a standard ATA/IDE setup because the jumpers control master and slave status, not the cable. As long as one device is jumpered as master and the other as slave, any two ATA/IDE or ATAPI devices should work together on a single channel."

  • Cannot find a mounting to install a second hard drive in my Qosmio x70-A

I have looked all over the internet and have gotten no where in my search for a mounting for the secondary hard drive bay in my laptop.  Anybody know where I can get one?
Also I've included pictures of the secondary drive bay and the primary bay.  From the looks of it I can't use the same type of mounting in the secondary bay as in the primary.

I have the same issue, and have found Toshiba support to be completely unacceptable on this.
After getting bumped around from sales to tech to sales because "we don't answer that question, you have to talk to the other guy", I finally got a "straight" answer from sales:
"Sir, we DO NOT sell that part, and therefore I CANNOT tell you a part or model number for the part you may need to install that second hard drive. The only thing you can do is talk to our parts supplier over at National Parts (1 800 524 8338) and ask them to provide you with the model numer or sell you the part."
At this point, I was annoyed, but thought that at least with a straight answer I could proceed.
After a very short hold time with National Parts, a very kind associate answered the phone and listened to my tale of woe. Unfortunately, she was unable to help and said:
"Unfortunately, sir, I have listed that while there is no caddy for the second hard drive slot on you X70-A specific model, there is supposed to be a mounting bracket. Unfortunately, we have been trying for MONTHS to have Toshiba give us the part number, spec, or any other information other than 'mounting bracket', and therefore I'm afraid we have neither a part to sell you nor a part number for you to go looking for one".
At this point annoyance is full-blown anger. How is it possible for Toshiba to make something that should be SO SIMPLE so VERY VERY VERY complicated and impossible.
"Sorry, if you didn't want to spring for the dual drives when you bought it, you're hosed forever sucker." Does not seem like an excellent customer service strategy.
This was the FIRST Toshiba I'd ever decided to spend my hard-earned money on, and now it's a machine I can't upgrade because they can't get their act together with their parts supplier or in-house over a 3 dollar bracket?
    UNACCEPTABLE.
The pictures the original poster shows are exactly what I have, no need to add more o fthe same.
    ANY help, Toshiba?

I bought an HP Pavilion 500 - 319na desktop in summer and want to install a 2nd hard drive. There are spare connections on the board and the power cable to the internal hard drive has a spare connection. From what I read it needs to be SATA 3. I have read conflicting advice on this board.  Some say yes, some say no.
OK, there seems to be only one bay (a poor oversight by HP) but provided I find a way of securing another drive is there any reason why it should not work.
From what I read it should be max 2Tb's.
I want a definitive answer please!

As I said to you in the other cross posting (desktop hardware):
You can obtain 3.5" hard drive cage from here for $11 shipped.  Granted it has a 120mm fan and space for 4 drives, but for the price, you can mod/cut all you want.
Now your other issue/question:  You will want a SataIII 6GB/sec drive 2TB, 7200 RPM.

  • Hello, I have a G5 PPC. I want to install a copy of Entourage on the second hard drive. Can I do that or will it create problems for the processor?

    Hi everyone
I had a very old intel iMac from late 2006 which was dying now dead. I just managed to copy the Entourage folder onto an external hard drive before the iMac gave up the ghost. But I could not open the Entourage copy on the G5 PPC. each time i tried to do so the PPC copy of Entourage would open instead.I have emails on the PPC copy and do not want to lose them. I was wondering if it would be possible to install another copy of Entourage on the second hard drive? I was hoping that by doing that I could access the information from the iMac which has been copied to an external hard drive.
Any help would be very very welcome.

I don't think MS lets you install Entourage outside of an active system folder. However, you can install a fresh copy of Entourage on the G5's hard drive (if you have Office 2008 or lower), then use Entrouge's Import command to move the data files from the old hard drive.
We're done this several times as we've upgraded either computers or Entourage.
However, I think that, before you act, you should also ask in Microsoft's user forums here:

They are excellent and often an employee of their Macintosh unit will assist in answering.
