Moving pictures to different libraries on iPhoto?

I have been useing iPhoto for three years completely unaware that i could create a second library. i take a lot of pictures, and i have 14,607 pictures all in one library and its become far too confusing to handle. i just created a new library yesterday. i need to move some events from my old one into the new one. after hours of attempting to move them i came to the conclusion that there was no way and i eventually downloaded the free "iPhoto Buddy". it seems alot of people use this. i see how it allows me to acces different libraries easily, but does it supply me with a way to move events from one library to the other? is there ANY way to do this?
i have tried exporting/importing them, but this is far too complicated. it will take me weeks to reorganize it all. am i missing something?

To move groups, albums or events, of photos between libraries and keep keywords, titles, comments, and other metadata intact the only option is to use the paid version of  iPhoto Library Manager.
Otherwise you could export those photos you want to move out of library A to a folder and import that folder into library B.  All you would get are the photos and none of the metadata.

  • Moving pictures between different aperture libraries

I have an imac which has my current aperture library. I would like to have a mac air for travel purposes and then be able to place all of the pictures in my mac air into my main library on the mac air on my return. Can I do this if yes how?
    Thanks

The "export as library" function is probably just what you want. Export part of your library as a new library, put it on the Macbook Air, work on it away from home, merge it back in, and remove it from your Macbook Air.

The link I included before is a little bit of a heated debate concerning this topic, but you can get familiar with the (unusually long) page from the manual in the above link.

  • Moving photos between different versions of iPhoto

Is there a way to move photos from my MBP running Maverick with iPhoto 9.5.1 to my iMac running Snow Leopard with iPhoto 9.1.5(I haven't been able to update the iMac as it lives on a sailboat where high speed internet is unavailable).
I tried using iPhoto manager and it doesn't work.

Copy them on a Flash drive and load them the next time you go.

  • Why is my picture library in finder different than in IPhoto

i want to drag my picture library in finder to an external drive.  But when i compare the pictures in finder it does not have all of the folders i have set up in iphoto

    Hello ccfr1234,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
If you are seeing different photos in another iPhoto Library on your computer than what you're used to, then you likely have opened another library which is on your computer.  To see the iPhoto Libraries stored on your computer, please follow the directions below.
    To switch between photo libraries:
    Quit iPhoto.
Hold down the Option key as you open iPhoto.
Select the library you want to switch to.
    Click Choose.
iPhoto '11: Create a new iPhoto library or switch between libraries
    Take care,

  • Projects on iPhoto on different libraries

    so that's the thing:
i have been using couple of different libraries to manage my photos.
finally, having had some problems managing everything at its best, i decided to start over again and have all my pictures in one library stored on my internal hard drive. i've created projects and purchased books and cards from iphoto with my previous libraries.
how do i import these projects into my new library i'm creating now?
    iPhoto 11 (9.2.1)
    Mac Os X Lion (10.7.3)
    thanks
    franOz
i found a discussion that says it is not possible to merge the projects.
    is there anything new?
    Message was edited by: franoz

There is no built-in functionality in iPhoto to merge Libraries:
You can export your events one-by-one from the smaller libraries to folders on your hard drive and import those folders as events inro your main library, but this will not prserve your books and slide shows.
You can buy the paid version of to iPhoto Library Manager   to merge your libraries. This also will not transfer books from to second library to the first during merge (afaik) but it has an option to avoid duplicates, and you will not have to merge one project at a time, see eg. this discussion: merge iphoto libraries with iphoto library manager

  • Sync two iPhones with two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries script

I'm sure this is answered elsewhere, but I was not able to find a solution to this easily. My wife "L" and I, "J" have iPhones, also different tastes in music, and wanted a way to not have all of our own pictures filling up our default iPhoto library. So we first set up two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Two diffrent contact libraries would be nice, but contact groups worked okay for this. But then everytime we would sync, it meant opening both iTunes and iPhoto while holding the option key then selecting which library depending on which phone was going to be pluged in. Believe me, you only need to have "Automatically sync" turned on and plug in the wrong iPhone before all sorts of problems arise!
Let me state, I am not fluent with AppleScript, but rather I found bits and pieces close to what I wanted here and there on the www and kept playing until it worked. This works flawlessly everytime on our MacBook, and, unless your initials are J & L and there are only two of you, you will have to change some letters here and there throughout the script to make it work for your situation. Think of this as a rough draft and start to play. I'm sure there is a simpler way to write this script, so to all the real authors, please re-write!
So we have two libraries for iTunes and iPhoto. One set of libraries named J's iTunes library and J's iPhoto library, and another two named L's iTunes library and L's iPhoto library. I wanted to create one app that would close the current libraries, and open the correct ones (or return to our default libraries) depending on what iPhone was to be synced. Using AppleScript Editor and saving the script as an application, this is what I came up with:
display dialog "Do you want to continue to set iTunes and iPhoto libraries?" buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue"
    tell application "iPhoto" to quit
    tell application "iTunes" to quit
set Y to the button returned of (display dialog "Which libraries do you want to use?" buttons {"L's", "Reset to Defaults", "J's"} default button "Reset to Defaults")
if Y = "Reset to Defaults" then set Y to "i"
    if Y = "L's" then set Y to "l"
    if Y = "J's" then set Y to "j"
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
      delay 1
              tell application "iPhoto"
      activate
      delay 3
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
              tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
              end tell
    end tell
    delay 2
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
              tell application "iTunes"
      activate
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
      keystroke return
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
    end tell
if Y = "i" then tell application "iTunes" to quit
if Y = "i" then tell application "iPhoto" to quit

    Hi, thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately this does not work because iTunes still keeps one account with the store active regardless which library I open. So when I switch the account in the store it will be switched for both libraries. That means that I can not separate the iPhone applications and all the other specific sync parameters.
I thought about using my wife's account on the Mac and pointing iTunes to the new library - the problem here is that then the iPhoto library is not accessible any more......
I can't really believe that there is no solution from Apple - I mean there must be more couples and families out there with 2 and more iPhones syncing with one iTunes / iPhoto etc libraries.
Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

In updating iPhoto 7.1.5 to 9.4.3 I have four different Libraries.  Is there a problem in updating all four Libraries from 7.1.5?

No.  Once you have upgraded iPhoto to 9.4.3 launch it with the Option key held down and select each library in order.  iPhoto will convert the  library to the new version.
As always, be sure you have a backup copy of each library before proceeding.

  • 2 different libraries - possible?

    Hi,
Is it now possible to maintain 2 different libraries?
I want to seperate family photos from work photos. I'm a graphic designer and I have a very big stock of royalty free pictures. And I don't want to mix them. Storing family pictures in a seperate Album is not enough.

Yes, with iPhoto Library Manager. You can copy events from one library to another and keep all the metadata intact.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Photo Libraries (in iPhoto 2.0.1)

I am trying to help transfer photos to an external drive to free up start-up disk space.
To open iPhoto, it had to create a new Library which is Library_2. There is also a Library_1 and Library_10 that seems to have the most folders by years (going back to 2004).
    Now there are 2 goals:
1)setting up one Library that will hold all photos , in the respective "year" folders, under all the different Libraries I mentioned, and
2)setting up a means to transfer photos to the external drive.
Maybe #2 should be #1, becasue once those pictures are transferred, and disk space is free, then we could start from scratch with the iPhoto application on the hard drive OS. Only question is, when we want to open photos from the external drive, how will that work .
    Thanks for any assistance.

  • Moved pictures to trash.Have I lost everything?

I was trying to tidy my computer and create more space by deleting loads of files I no longer needed. At the time, I didn't realise that the iphoto heart and brain was kept in 'pictures' and moved all pictures content to trash, thinking it was just copies of pictures I already had in iphoto (4). When I realised what I'd done, I moved the stuff back out of trash and into pictures again. I can't move it into iphoto. I've tried to import pictures back in and the blue stripy line just keeps striping and it says 'working'. I can't open any of the libraries. I've lost about 3,000 images. i can't even begin to describe how sick I feel. It's like I've just crashed a new car.
And no I didn't back up. And I know it's stupid. Will iphoto even work again?

If you've moved subfolders out of the iPhoto Library folder, then you will have created a bit of a mess, but it's not entirely fatal. At worst, you'll lose keyword and album associations.
Drag everything back inside the iPhoto Library folder (in the Pictures folder). Now start iPhoto while holding the option+shift keys until you're asked to confirm that you want to rebuild the photo library. Then click "Save" in the subsequent dialog, and go have a snack. When you come back, iPhoto should have at least sorted out your original images.

  • HELP!! I had two libraries in iPhoto, Photos imported the wrong one, and now I have lost 10,000  photos. How can I get them back??

I originally had two libraries in iPhoto, my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why. Anyway, I updated to OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.3 with the new 'photos' app. It asked me to choose one of the libraries and evidently I assume I must have chosen the wrong one. It only imported 322 random photos, not the 10,000+ we had in iPhoto. I can no longer find these photos or the other library anywhere, it appears to have been deleted. I have tried 'alt' clicking the icon which used to open a 'choose library' box, but this no longer works in photos or iPhoto. I have no idea where it has gone and it contains precious memories over the years including the birth of our children. Can someone please help???

Where is your iPhoto library stored?
my wife and I share two iMacs at different locations but we wanted to share the photos and it was set up this way Apple Geniuses at the store I have no idea why.
Since you are sharing it between two Macs, is the library on an external drive or a NAS, or another remotely mounted volume?
If the library is not on a directly connected disk, formatted MacOS Extended, move the original iPhoto Library to a directly connected, correctly disk.
And the try first the iPhoto Library First Aid Tools on that library.  Repair the permissions, and repair the database in iPhoto.  Then try to migrate again to Photos.
To repair hold down the  alt/option and the command key simultaneously while double clicking the iPhoto Library to launch the iPhoto Library First Aid tools. Hold down both keys firmly and long enough, until the First Aid panel will appear.
The select "Repair Permissions". And then repeat, but select "Repair Database"
But make a current backup of your iPhoto Library before you try this.

  • Moving picture from laptop hard drive to larger external hard drive

I am not changing anything in my system.  I am using windows 7 and will continue to.  No change in elements version (10).  Please give me a step by step instructions on how to move my pictures from my computer hard drive to an external hard drive (this will NOT be a back up) but the primary locaton for my pictures.  I will keep elements program on my computer and when I want to work on my pictures or download more pictures from my camera  I will connect to the external hard drive.

    A few questions
When I drag and drop my pictures am I looking at my pictures in elements organizer?
No, there are two ways to see your folders in PSE11 and PSE12 :
By default, it's the 'My Pictures' view. It shows a flat list of all the folders containing images registered in the catalog; all the folder of the last level, without the tree organization. You may have missed (like many, many users...) the 'Pictures' view which you obtain in clicking on the small yellow icon in the title bar of 'My Pictures'. You are shown all your folders and subfolders, all your different drives. It's very close to the folder view of Windows explorer, and you can do most of the operations you would do in the explorer.
You'll understand better if you take the time to play with the 'Pictures' view, where you can collapse or expand subfolders, or right click to show 'display all folders' when they are collapsed.
Let's say you have all your pictures under the default 'Pictures' folder of Win7. You should see the list of your drives in the lower part of the same left panel.
I suppose you don't want to change the default 'Pictures' location in Win7. If your external drive has the letter F:, you'll create a new master folder : 'F:/My Pictures bis' for instance. To test the process, you'll select one of your folders under Pictures, drag and drop on F:/My Pictures bis. Then you can check the result by viewing your pictures in different order, by testing your tags, albums etc. All should work exactly the same as before as long as your external drive is plugged in. (If it is not, you'll get 'missing files' warnings which will disappear if you plug in your external drive).
When you are satisfied with the process, you can move other folders (their subfolders will follow).
You could move only the upper level 'Pictures' folder of Win7 in a single step, but you'll feel more secure by doing this in several moves, since moving a big amount of files takes a long time (not longer than a move via the explorer,  moving a library of 150 GB like mine requires maybe 2 hours...)
Since you are on Win7, be sure to give all the access rigths to your external drive...
Another Windows trick : the catalog will remember and register the letter drive, F: in our example.
If you plug-in another  accessory in the meantime and the drive is now assigned G:, you'll have problem.
The best way to avoid such a case would be to assign a letter like M: so that your external drive will be recognized in all cases.

  • TS4108 how do I transfer photos in photo stream to a different file in iPhoto to clear up space in iCloud?

Hw do I transfer photos from photo stream to a different file in iphoto so I can clear up space in icloud?

Photo stream photos don't use your personal iCloud account storage so deleting or moving them will not free up any space in your account.
That said, if you still want to move them from photo stream in iPhoto, import them to your library by control-clicking on the photo and choosing Import.  You can set iPhoto to automatically import photo stream photos to your library by going to iPhoto>Preferneces>iCloud and checking Automatic Import:

  • Every new picture I add to an iPhoto album appears in a new "untitled album" - why?

I created an Album specifically for syncing with my iPhone. Every time I add a new picture to that album, iPhoto creates a nested "untitled album" for each picture. Thus I have "untitled album," "untitled album 1," etc. All I want is a single Album where I can selectively add photos for moving to the iPhone. I'm using iPhoto 11, iPhone 4s, iTunes 10.5.

As a test  launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it? If it doesn't then your current library is damaged and needs to be repaired. Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start with
Option #3, followed by #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
