Moving Pictures to External Changes Names

I have a lot of pictures on my Hard Drive and I want to move them to an external to save space. However when I drag the pictures over the names are changed to IMG then a # is there a way I can move them and preserve the names they have?

what format is the external drive formatted in? For instance if the external drive is formatted for dos.(windows) The drive will then not like long names. And it will have issues with any file or folder that has one of the fallowing in it's name: "/\*?:| .
One way around this, is to format the drive for mac. This will erase every thing on the hard drive. if need to, back up the drive first. If you do this the drive will not be use-able with a PC.

  • Moving Pictures to External Hard Drive

I purchased a SimpleDrive External Hard Drive (by SimpleTech) to transfer photos off of my Dell laptop. Since then, we purchased an iMac computer, and I thought it would be compatible with the Mac as well. I uploaded the Mac-based program that came with the drive, but it won't let me drag any pictures (or folders) into the drive when it's plugged in. It says it cannot be modified. Any suggestions on how to get my pictures from my computer to the external hard drive? What I might be missing or doing wrong?
    Thanks!

If it's a large hard drive and it is formatted for Windows, it is probably formatted as NTFS. Although Mac OS X can read and write the older Windows format (FAT32), It can only read NTFS. That is probably why it won't let you drag files and folders to the drive, when connected to a Mac.
If you are going to be using it with the Mac going forward, you should run Disk Utility. Go to the Erase tab, and use the +Volume Format+ of +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. This will obviously erase the drive, so copy off files you want to retain before doing so. That is the native Mac formatting. You will then be able to use the external drive just as you use the internal drive.

  • Moving Pictures from External HDD

I recently bought a new Mac Book Pro. I have quite number of pictures on an external HDD that I wish to move onto my new laptop, then on to my iPhone 5. How do I do this (step by step please)?

I would recommend restarting  your media migration and use Migration Assistant, it's the easiest and quickest method. AppleCare can help you through that, when you call let them know the history so they can help you start with a clean slate. If you have an Apple Store in your area I'd strongly recommend booking an appointment with a Genuis who can walk you through the process. If you want to go to the trouble of bringing your iMac and EHD with you they will also help you.

How do I expand the F folder to expose all files?

  • How to change names of imported pictures

As you all know, cameras give pictures those strange insignificant names 'DSCFD00023', etc.
In the old windows days, my picture importing software allowed me to change the names of these during import, to whatever prefix I chose 'Beach' and then a sequential numbering.
Is this not possible in iPhoto or in the other importing application? I can't seem to do it. It would be a pain to rename every picture manually in the finder...
    thanks

    djkhont
    1. Do not rename pictures in the Finder after importing them. It is strongly advised that you do not move, change or in anyway alter things in the iPhoto Library Folder as this can cause the application to fail and even lead to data loss
    2. If you want to name the pics before importing use a batch renamer like File List: http://www.petermaurer.de/nasi.php?section=filelist (Donation Ware)
    3. Another posibility is to use the Titling option in iPhoto. After you import the pics select them and go Photos -> Batch Change and set an appropriate title. However, titling will not rename the files themselves. However, if you are exporting them using the File -> Export command you have an option to set the title as the File Name.

  • Problems moving folders to external drive on a Mac

I am having the hardest time moving pictures in lightroom to an external drive. I can select pictures and move them one by one, or in bulk, but if I select a folder of pictures and drag and drop them to an external drive, they won't move. It appears they have moved, but when I select the picture, and select show in finder, it shows they are being copied from my MASTER drive with pictures to my SSD boot drive root.
I have an SSD boot, a MASTER with all the pictures, an SSD scratch with the catalog, and an external drive for old pictures all running in Yosemite, Lightroom 5.7, on a Mac Pro.
Is there a way to reset Lightroom settings so I can start from scratch? Or is it possible it could be a permissions error. I tried setting all permissions on all drives to Read & Write for all folders and files with no luck.

You can start from scratch by creating a new catalog from the menu:
    File >> New catalog
Choose a new name for the catalog and save. When the empty calalog launches you are ready to import.
A safer way to move folders is to drag your folder using Finder to the external hard drive. That will make a copy of the folder and files. Then in LR you right-click (or control-click) on the folder name in the left-hand panel and choose update folder location. Navigate to the external drive location and LR will re-link everything automatically. The beauty of this method is that you can ensure everything is OK before deleting the folder from your internal drive.

  • Moving projects between external hard drives lose clips

Sorry for the unclear subject line, but I really can't think of a quippy way to say what the problem is.
Short version--I moved project from external hard drive A to external hard drive B. Worked on A. Worked on B. Moved it back to A (still have copy on B). No longer works on A. Clips show up in the timeline, but on screen is white. Transitions, titles, audio don't work. Still works on B.
    Ideas?
Long version--I'm using 10.3.9 on my old Powerbook. iMovie 6.0.3. I am using Lacie Porsche 250GB external and a Mercury Elite Pro 500 GB hard drives. When I started, the Lacie, which I was using for my speaking career videos, was NOT formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So, while working on another project, I had issues with the infamous Ken Burns bug with pictures.
After consulting with the experts here (thanks Karl), I determined that I must reformat. So, pain and anguish, I moved the various movies off of the Lacie (Drive A) to the Mercury (Drive B). On both, the movies worked fine--all transitions, everything. The Mercury was and is Mac OS Extended (but NOT Journaled).
So, I wipe the Lacie with Disk Utility so it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once finished, I begin the process of moving projects (3 in total) back to the Lacie. Two of the projects are completed works with transitions, audio file, titles and the like. One is just clips in the clip pane, none in the timeline. I moved them all at once.
When I did, I checked them before I would delete them off the Mercury. When I did, both of the completed projects loaded properly--the clips do show in the timeline. But, in the preview window, all I have is a blank white screen. When I play, nothing happens.
I have not erased anything, changed anything, thrown anything away--nothing. And, they still work perfectly on the Mercury (same computer, obviously).
This one really has me stumped. I am really irked that iMovie has apparently become such a messed up program. Worse, this has been out for some time now (I had not used it yet, but I got iLife last year some time). I can't believe there are all these issues all this time later and obviously Apple has done nothing or little to correct these problems. I consider iMovie a real flagship program to model the ease of use and blah blah blah that we all know concerning Apple.
OK, sorry for venting---anyone with any ideas? Did I mess up the drive when I wiped it? Is this merely the program? Something between the fact that the Mercury is NOT Journalled? Any help will, as always, be appreciated.

    Thanks David---
The Permissions are the same for both, on both hard drives.
I have not repaired permissions on either.
I did shut down the computer last night and this AM, upon starting again, had the same problem.
I did attempt a few fixes--I moved the clips from the timeline back to the preview pane. I had one clip already there and it would play perfectly. When I did that, with a clip from the timeline and then moved it back, it would show up and play. But, upon hitting the next clip, it would stop playing at the first transition.
Some of the transitions are from a Third Party (Gee). Remember, though, they played perfectly fine from Drive B. I have not attempted, however, to put the Gee effects into iMovie 6. As I said earlier, I haven't used the program on my computer since the Fall. Now, using 6.0.3, I don't see my GeeThree effects anywhere, nor have I tried to put them in. But, from the Drive B (and originally in the drive A), the movie plays fine even though the added clips are not present for me to use in any new project.

  • Moving pictures from Ovi to standard folders

This probably sounds stupid, but now I have used Ovi Suite to copy my photos from my N95 onto my computer, I cannot seem to do anything with them.  They must be on my computer, as they still show in Ovi Suite when my phone is not plugged in.  But I cannot actually see them anywhere in any folders when I check through Explorer.  The Nokia information says to drag and drop onto a folder, but when I try doing that there is an X over the photo and nothing happens.  If I try to right click "Copy to device" is greyed out, and there is no option "copy to computer".  So I cannot find any way to get the images into a folder where I can work on them with Photoshop, print them etc.  Help!

The Photos transferred from your Phone by OviSuite are usually stored in My Documents\My Pictures under directories with names like 2010-11 [for Photos transferred in Nov 2010].  You may have changed that default directory.
If you can't find those directories you could try searching for the Photos themselves.  When imported by OviSuite he photos thenselves have been named DDMMYYYY001, DDMMYYYY002 etc.  So take a new photo on say 5 Nov 2010, sync the photos to the computer then search for a file named 05112010001.jpg.  Don't worry about the numbering if you have already taken photos on the 5th Nov 2010.  Even if the test photo is the 100th taken that day there will be a 05112101001.jpg on your computer.
This is all based on OviSuite 2.2.1.23.

  • After specifying the external host name under outlook anywhere, users pop up for password

    Dear All,
I have installed and configured exchange 2013 as a fresh installation on server 2012 and it worked fine till i changed
specifying the external host name under outlook anywhere(in exchange ECP -> Server -> server -> W12R2-Email2013).
My internal domain is starnavigator.lk and we have several accepted domains listed. but all the staff checked web mail through
mail.leoburnett.lk internally and externally. even now web mail is working fine.
After i added external host name as mail.leoburnett.lk
all the internal PCs start to pop up for user name and password and its not  connecting.
even if I reversed back the settings, still prompt for user name and password. also auto discover cant locate the settings. if i configure the settings manually, i t works for first time and after restarting outlook, again prompt for name and password.Any
    any advice or solution please??
    Thx,
    Dulana

Run this tool and post the result (only errors)
    https://testconnectivity.microsoft.com/
After configuring outlook manually, run Test E-Mail Autoconfiguration and Connection Status and post the result.
Editing just an URL for OA shouldn't cause any issue.
    Did you restarted IIS Service?

  • Bug in 2.1:  Moving pictures leaves stale thumbnail

This used to happen a lot with the original Lightroom Beta, but
rarely happened after the 2.1 RC.
It has happened three times with 2.1 final when moving pictures from a folder into a sibling, aka from:
    g:\pics\unpro into
    g:\pics\misc
But it doesn't always happen. Same symptom as before - the thumbnails don't get refreshed unless you restart lightroom.
It hasn't happened yet when moving pictures to a different drive.
    - Frank

It happened again and I did some experimentation.
It does not always happen, but it is repeatable. I've now
    reproduced it about 8 times.
Move one picture from one folder to another. Repeat until it happens.
I did a 'Relaunch and Rebuild' and then restarted Lightroom, and I had to move about 20 pictures (one by one) before it reoccurred.
What I am doing is dragging a picture from G:\pics\unpro into g:\pics\steve. I haven't done any changes to the pictures, I'm just organizing them a bit.
When the problem occurs, I notice the following:
I can see the moved picture in both folders, as if I had copied the picture, rather than moved it. Once I restart lightroom it is only in the correct folder.
On the disk, the picture is correctly in the new folder, and does
not exist in the original folder.
Let me know if you want me to try anything else.

  • External OWA name - certificate / CAS Array?

    I am implementing Exchange environment.
    Single Exchange server (MBX/CAS/HUB) - exchsrv.intdom.com.
I have purchased a public certificate and configured my external DNS and SRV to webmail.extdom.com. Public cert contains webmail.extdom.com, and autodiscover addresses.
webmail.extdom.com points to IP address of firewall which performs NAT to allow me to point to internal Exchange services for OWA, OA etc.
Does webmail.extdom.com need to match anything internally (it is already configured in the external URLs for each service) in addition to this e.g. do I need to create a CAS array even though I have a single server?
Does webmail.extdom.com need to be referenced anywhere else internally for the purpose of certificates.

    Hi,
As far as I know, when we install Exchange server, a self-signed certificate including the server name is automatically installed and the internal URLs of web services are configured with the server name.
Thus, we can change the URLs with the external host name and it doesn’t matter if you don’t change them.
Additionally, it’s recommended to create CAS array even though there is only one CAS server in your environment :

  • Moving picture messages

    Hi,
I have a Nokia N95 8GB. I have tried to download a moving picture msg from jamster but for some reason it doesnt move on my screen.. just it still like a wallpaper.
do i need to change any settings?

You can do a couple of things, you need the Communication Centre in PC Suite for both.
The first is to simple mark all messages (CTRL+A) then copy them (CTRL+C). You can then paste them into any folder on your PC hard drive - they will be individual ".vmg" files that can be opened in the Communication Centre.
The second is to mark all messages then click File>Export - the messgaes will be exported into a ".csv" file that can be opened in programs like Microsoft Excel. You can export the inbox, sent items and drafts messages this way, but not as a single file, you have to do each box separately.

you would need to setup a VPN and tunnel into your office.

  • Moving Content to External Hard Drive and Using New Computers

Before doing this, I want to make sure I know how to do all of it:
We are going to buy two new laptops, and retire the old one. I want to move all of my iTunes content from the old laptop to an external hard drive attached to an Airport Extreme. I then want to be able to share the content between the two computers. I know how to do this, and plan to move the library data base files to the external hard drive, as well.
However, I also want to be able to continue synching all of the content to the Apple TV. To what should the Apple TV be synched after the content is moved to the external hard-drive and the old computer is replaced by two new computers? How is that done under the circumstances? And, in the meantime, will the Apple TV lose all of its content and need to be re-synched entirely from scratch, or will it continue recognizing the current iTunes library as moved to the external hard drive?
    Thanks!

This is an option, although as a note of caution; depending on how regularly you modify your library this could become a little bit of a chore. The option is likely a good one in many cases but not all.
In my own case I considered using an old mac as my media server in the sense mentioned by tmartine. (I do a bit of experimental stuff and need to restart my mac quite often, I also have 5 Apple tv's and a library which is too large to do anything but stream, my family don't take too kindly to my frequent restarts and I find myself waiting until the early hours).
However I also modify my itunes library on a daily basis, I buy quite a bit of stuff and also add my own movies regularly, as well as make several recordings a day through my eyetv, all this new content would need to be manually added to my (server) library (and deleted manually), I felt this would be too many extra things for me to do and so my personal preference is to have my itunes library on my main computer as the primary library.
