Moving Playlists out of a Folder

I accidentally moved some playlists into a folder.  Now I can't move them out and back in the list of other playlists.  Do I have no choice but to recreate the whole playlists?

Use the Playlists view , or enable the Sidebar. Drag & drop the playlist onto either the word Playlists or
the Library area at the top of the list of depending on which view you are in.

PS, Are you still using Windows 98? Don't think there is an iPhone compatible version of iTunes to run on that.

  • I have smart playlists combined in a folder that I use to make playlists to fit on devices. Lately the folder isn't updating with the playlists inside it, so the folder shows songs that aren't in any of its playlists. Can anyone help?

I'm using the latest iTunes on Windows 8. Since upgrading to iTunes 12 my old system of smart playlists within folders have not worked properly. I used to have a folder containing three folders with smart playlists in them, but I had to abandon this and copy all the smart playlists into one folder, as the nested structure didn't seem to update anymore. This worked for a couple of months (even though it was less convenient and didn't exactly accomplish what I had been able to do on iTunes 11 and earlier).
More recently, however, I've found that the folder in the simplified structure also doesn't work properly. The smart playlists are set up to remove songs after they were played, but now the folder seems to retain some songs even after they've disappeared from the playlist that included them. It seems to be building up 'ghosts' of songs that were played and were then supposed to disappear as per the smart playlist setup. I tried copying all the playlists out of the folder, but ended up with the folder 'properties' showing that it contained a number of songs, even when it was empty.
I also noticed that I'm unable to reference the folder in the conditions of any new playlists I set up - I get the error message that the folder relies on smart playlists that cannot be updated. In response to this I reviewed all the playlists, but saw no errors.
    Anybody else have this problem?

It may be best to recreate the folder and the smart playlists from scratch.

I redirected iTunes to an external drive and moved my iTunes library and folder, but my hard drive is still low on space.  How can I be sure that my music is all on the external HD ONLY, especially with the new iCloud technology?  It doesn't look like I created any more space by doing this, AND I totally lost all my iTunes playlists.  I'm not sure if because I added old library materials manually if this messed up my playlists, or if the new location is just not reading my moved library.  In any case, I followed step by step instructions and found a few holes and thought I'd just "figure it out" but I guess I'm not as smart as I thought since I'm still scratching my head many hours later.
    Thanks for any support ;-)

Quick answer if you use iTunes' default preferences settings:  Copy the entire iTunes folder (and in doing so all its subfolders and files) intact to the other drive.  Open iTunes and immediately hold down the option (alt) key (shift on Windows) so you get a prompt to select a library, then guide it to the 'iTunes Library.itl' file in the moved iTunes folder.
If this is to a new computer and you put the copied iTunes folder in the default location of Macintosh HD > Users > *User Name* > Music  then you don't even need to start with the option key held down, iTunes will automatically look for it there.  (Make sure there isn't anything already in the iTunes folder there that you want to keep since you will be replacing it with the one you are moving.)

Here's the feedback I just submitted:
Subject: Library organization bug in iTunes 12.0.1.26 for Windows x64
I Have Feedback About: Software or Hardware Compatibility
    Comments:
    Hi,
I have my iTunes library organized into subfolders (Music, Movies, TV Shows, and so on). When I add new video media to iTunes, either by "drag and drop," or placing a file into the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder, the new media file is placed in the "Home Videos" folder. Then, after changing the metadata using the "Get Info" mechanism, the metadata is updated; however, the file is not moved out of the "Home Videos" folder. A new folder is created properly under "Movies" or "TV Shows" (depending on the type), yet iTunes isn't taking the final step of moving the file into that folder.
I've validated this behavior on two different Windows systems.
iTunes 12.0.1.26 running on OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) moves the files properly, so this issue looks to be specific to the Windows version.

I have tried to download Mavericks on my 2010 iMac(10.6.8), but nothing happens, not even the install app downloads, also I tried to download chrome, I moved it to the applications folder and when I opened the folder it wasn't there. I have a 1tb hard drive that is mostly empty. By the way I just got this imac used from a reseller.

Mavericks downloads into the Applications folder, where you can install it.   Some Mac App Store Troubleshooting information and how to resume a download that was interrupted; some of the information here might get you an answer.   Failing that, try contacting Apple Support.

  • I want to create a playlist on an old iPod Nano (I think it's from the second generation), but the computer it was originally linked to via iTunes died years ago.  How can I make a playlist out of existing songs on the iPod?

    Hello there,
I have an old iPod nano which I think is from the second generation (model number A1199 if that helps) with software at the latest version it can accept, 1.1.3.  I wish to make a playlist out of the songs currently on the iPod, but I can't see any easy way to do that from the iPod itself.  The next logical thought is to do it through iTunes, but the iTunes that was originally synced to the iPod died several years ago now, so I can't access that to make a playlist through (it's a very old iPod).  I do have iTunes currently on this computer, but that's synced with my iPhone and stores different songs which I don't want to be mixed with those from the old iPod (due to the mostly nostalgic nature of the iPod songs).  Is there any way I can either create a new playlist from the iPod itself, or through iTunes without having to sync?  Also note that most of the songs on the old iPod were uploaded to iTunes from CDs and so aren't connected with any iTunes Login.
Thanks for any help you can give.  Also, I sorta need to create this playlist ASAP so any advice you could give would be much appreciated
    ~Imamadmad

The old iTunes library was lost with the old PC.  However, it all that music and content is still on your iPod there are many ways you can extract this content from the iPod and import it back into iTunes.
Your iPod is designed to sync with only one iTunes library at a time.  It will recognize the iTunes library on the new PC as a new library.  If you sync the iPod with this new library, all content will be erased from the iPod and replaced with what is in the new library.  So what you will want to do is copy everything from the iPod to your new iTunes library on your PC first.
See this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different methods and software available to assist you with the task of copying content from your iPod back to your PC and into iTunes.

  • How can you take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in.

As the title says I need help on how to take a photo from one event and put it in another, without dragging to desktop and dragging back into iPhoto and moving it to the event folder I want it in. Right now when I want to move a picture from one event to another I drag it to my desktop then delete it from iPhoto then I drag it back into iPhoto and put where I want it.An example would be taking a photo from the Christmas event and add it to a specific person event.  Can I do that within the events section without all the dragging. Also is there anyway I can remove duplicates from iPhoto without going through each and every file. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Apple doesn't make it easy to do what you want.  However, here's how I do it.
Select the photo you want to move and create a new Event for it via the Event ➙ Create Event menu option.
In the Event mode select the new Event with the one picture and drag it onto the Event you want to move the photo to.

  • Moving a message to a folder corrupts the folder

Any time I move a message from one folder to another, the destination folder apparently becomes corrupted. I say this because I can "repair" the folder and that works - until I move another message into it.
Symptoms: I can see the message header in the message list pane, but cannot see any content in the message pane, nor does any content appear if I open the message in a tab. Sometimes repairing the folder once brings the message back, but the view is raw data (with header information and html tags); in this case, repairing it a second time fixes that problem. The message does automatically show as "read" after the requisite time period. Compacting the folder has resulted in the loss of the message completely (though only from the folder; it was still in the archive).
I have deleted the global-messages-db.sqlite file and recreated the index - no change.
Running Thunderbird 24.5.0 on Ubuntu 12.04.4, 3.2.0-64-generic kernel. My main e-mail source is an imap account. Apparently the problem does not exist when receiving mail in a pop account (at least I haven't been able to recreate it with minimal testing).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

So... i can NOT move a message (received via IMAP) to a folder without corrupting the folder (sometimes I can see the message header, sometimes not, but the message body comes up blank). So before moving a message to a folder I have to "repair" the folder, then move the message, then "repair" the folder again. Having to do that for any and every e-mail message I want to save is becoming... tedious.
One suggestion was to compact the folders; that happens automatically. Just to be sure, I've compacted a folder and then moved a message in - same problem.
Another was to make the folders smaller, so I moved a lot of messages (literally thousands, bordering on ten thousand or more) to the "Local Folders" section - no help there either.
The article in the answer from finitarry suggested using a tool to break the folder into 500 message chunks (so I could look for the corruption). Perhaps I misread the article, but it seemed to be looking for the raw files - hence my listing of the file structure for my profile. I have no idea which one to use for that. Editing text files - not a problem, and I do have an editor that will handle large files (vim).
If there is a way to export everything (and keep the folder structure) I can move all of the messages to Local Folders, export, and then import (assuming there is a chance that would fix things).

  • How to find out when a folder or a file has been renamed?

I need to find out when a folder and some files have been renamed.
This happened when Mac OS X was 10.6 (Leopard Snow), now the Max OS X is Lion.
I use standard HFS+ filesystem format.
In Lion apparently there is a file property "Date Added" that change if a file is renamed, but the same property seems to be unused (e.g. -/-) before Lion.
I have Time Machine backups that help me to know that rename happened within a certain week, but I was looking for something more accurate (at least day accuracy).
If file system metadata can't help, I'm wondering if there is some log that track the first time spotlight indexed a specific file.
    Thank you
    /Andrea

Maybe you could keep tabs of the file size. If the file size grows (which it will do each time the writing process flushes that files output buffer), then the file was written to.
What I'd like to know is if there is some way to monitor the entire drive for changes and respond to stuff like that. I know that the Win32 API provides services that monitor the file system for changes, but I don't know if other OS's do... or if Java provides an interface to those features.

  • I would like to move the Tv show folder to an external HD. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes music folder?

I would like to move the TV Shows folder from my iMac's HD to an external HD to free up some space. Can I do this without moving the entire iTunes Library folder? If so, can my other devices like iPads and Apple TV find the moved TV shows folder?

All kinds of things are possible with iTunes, but few of them are easy.  Yes, you can isolate TV shows on a different drive.  The degree of complexity depends upon how much work and learning you are interested in doing.  The easiest solution is to delete them all from iTunes but do not let iTunes delete the actual media files.  Then go to the folder where TV shows are located and copy that folder to a different drive.  Now hold down the option key and drag them back to iTunes so it adds them again.  Using the option key means the file doesn't get copied to iTunes' main media folder.  However, since these are being added as new files it means you risk losing some information entered about them such as personal ratings, date added, date last played, etc.  There are ways of retaining this data but that's where you really have to learn how to do workarounds with iTunes.
I have never seen an AppleTV, nor used an iPhone but my understanding is these devices do not directly use the files, they do so through iTunes.  As long as the entries can be found in iTunes then they should be accessible by other devices.

  • TS3989 My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

My photos on my iPhone 4 are on my camera roll and in my photo stream, but my recent photos have not moved to my photo stream folder on my computer (windows 7).  What can I do?

At 1.3GB available, your storage space is getting very thin no matter what you do further.  As long as you have the photo's in the camera roll saved on your computer you can delete them.  Just make sure first that they are in your photo software.  If updating in iTunes, just backup/sync first, then update, and that will save the camera roll in the backup as well.
At only 1.3GB you eventually are going to find yourself unable to install or update some app, or unable to take any new pictures, or some other limitation that will force you to free up space anyway.  So now, before updating, sounds like a good time to make sure everything is backed up or stored somewhere else, and clean house a bit, then update.
