Moving project btwn hd's

good evening
have a question that I cannot find elsewhere here...I for some stupid reason moved quite a large 2 hr project onto a USB external hd when i was done with it.
Now I have to go back and re-edit some of it.
Would it be better to move all the info and project file back to my external firewire drive? If so, what is the safest way to do this?
I saved everything onto the USB--render files, etc.
Thanks for any advice

Yes, don't use the USB disk for rendering.
If you copy all your FCE data and media (Capture Scratch folder first of all, but also Render files, etc.) into their same location on the firewire disk, that they had before moving to the USB, you probably won't even need to reconnect.
If names are somewhat changed, when opening again the project you'll be asked to reconnect: just select the new location for any file to be reconnected.
If render files are missing, just re-render again the project. Personally I prefer not to restore render files but to render again all the project.
In any case the main point is to restore +all captured media+ and +all imported media+ (pictures, audio, imported clips): all other support files, like audio and video render files, thumbnails, waveforms are rebuilt by FCE if needed.

  • Slow Moving Project Stock

    Hi,
My problem is to find out slow moving project stocks. Report MC46 shows only slow moving normal stocks and project stock is not included in this.
    Thanks

    Hi Gaurav Shah,
If you are procuring for project stock means, the material is for direct consumption.I think its not logical to see it in terms of "slow moving stock" category.
Hope I am right and it will be useful and give you some insights.

  • Moved Project To Knew Computer After Everything Is Named-Drive Formatting?

Did search, and seems to be a common problem, but there are a little differences. In the past, when moving project, after starting, everything just showed up. This time, the red lines everywhere. Tried renaming file to clip and vice-versa, and nothing. Double-checked and have all the media. I thought the pathway pointers were imbedded, maybe not. Do have sub-clips. Did hear some talk about how the original media(P2 DV)is saved, can affect it. Was original saved to portable firewire drive that is Fat 32 to capture P2 in the field for Macbook pro. New media drive is extended. Any help is appreciated.

Assuming that you have canvas and/or viewer set to "image" not "wireframe" the only thing I can say is that you double check again that you have the most updated version for Motion or a version that your FCP version would expect to connect with. I have seen other people experiencing this, the answer could be the awkward worst case scenario you want to avoid or simply an update inadvertently missed. Rather difficult to establish without investigating further within your actual workstation.

  • Trouble moving projects from one computer to another

In the prospect of clearing up space, I am moving projects from my hard drive to an external.  In order to make sure things are moving properly I open up a project from the external onto another computer, different from the one I moved the projects off of.  When I open up the project, part of the original footage (.MTS file) does not show up in the timeline.  The blue rectangle that represents the footage is striped.  When I open up the exact same project onto the original computer from the external everything is fine.
Also, when I was opening up a project from the external to the other computer the "Locate Media" pop up appears wanting me to link all the media, but all the media has been checked off, as if all the media has already been found.  Why does it do this?
    Thanks,
    Josh

    Hi Josh,
Check this out: Moving projects to another computer: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/premierepro/cs/using/WS1BF3BAAB-A930-44e3-8DFA-50D5C58A1A1Aa.h tml#WS3D22F379-B6C7-4d8c-9548-26AA3E1EA74F
Likely you have some of the MTS file structure missing. The best way to move projects, IMHO, is to use the Project Manager.

  • Moving projects to an external hard drive in FCPX?

Hello, in previous versions of Final Cut Pro 10 was no problem moving projects to an external hard drive. In the latest version I do not get this. Anybody have any tips?
    Regards Marius

    File>Open Library>New.
Set the location of your new library in the save dialog.
In the Libraries pane, drag the event that contains your project into the new library. It will make a copy. Or use the Move or Copy commands from the File menu.

  • Intel Macs & G5s: Problems when moving projects between them

An earlier post* suggesting complete compatibility between the latest FCP in a G5 and in an Intel Mac may be in error.
We are experiencing continuing crashes using our Intel Mac when we work on projects that were originally either imported or partially rendered in the G5.
It has gotten to the point where we feel we must keep projects completely isolated from each other: Either it is a "G5 project" or it is an "Intel Mac" project. Moving projects back and forth between the two leads to problems such as:
The Intel Mac does not recognize any renders done in the G5...
The Intel Mac crashes when rendering 'G5' projects...
The Intel mac crashes when compressor goes to work to export sequences to mpeg...
The G5 works fine with Intel Mac-originated material: It is only in the Intel Mac where we have these problems.
Both systems are up-to-the minute on their OS, security updates, and FCP versions. We are using variously 720p/30 from the JVC GY-100UA and 1080i/30 from the Sony Z1U.
    Our questions are:
Is anyone else experiencing similar problems moving projects between a G5 and an Intel Mac?
Is anyone moving projects between the two platforms and experiencing NO problems at all? That information would be just as valuable, and very welcome.
Apple FCP development team: Is our experience unique or have you had other reports like this? Any idea what could be causing our problems -- and what we can do to fix them?

    Scott,
    Welcome to the discussions!
I have had no problems moving my G5 projects over to my MP.
You can not move render files between machines.
When you changed systems, did you use Migration Assistant to transfer your files over to your new Mac Pro? You might need to install from the disks in order to achieve native Intel performance. See if you installed Final Cut 5.1 on your G5 then it installed the PPC code... if you put that drive into your Mac Pro or used Migration Assistant to move the app over it is still the PPC code... When you install from the installation disk, Installer determines what system you are installing on (PPC or Intel) and that's what it installs. This goes for all of your "Universal Binary" apps...
In the System Profiler app. under Software/Applications
Final Cut Pro "kind" should be Universal on your MP.
The FCP development team do not read these posts, only users do.

  • Moving projects between external hard drives lose clips

Sorry for the unclear subject line, but I really can't think of a quippy way to say what the problem is.
Short version--I moved project from external hard drive A to external hard drive B. Worked on A. Worked on B. Moved it back to A (still have copy on B). No longer works on A. Clips show up in the timeline, but on screen is white. Transitions, titles, audio don't work. Still works on B.
    Ideas?
Long version--I'm using 10.3.9 on my old Powerbook. iMovie 6.0.3. I am using Lacie Porsche 250GB external and a Mercury Elite Pro 500 GB hard drives. When I started, the Lacie, which I was using for my speaking career videos, was NOT formatted for Mac OS Extended (Journaled). So, while working on another project, I had issues with the infamous Ken Burns bug with pictures.
After consulting with the experts here (thanks Karl), I determined that I must reformat. So, pain and anguish, I moved the various movies off of the Lacie (Drive A) to the Mercury (Drive B). On both, the movies worked fine--all transitions, everything. The Mercury was and is Mac OS Extended (but NOT Journaled).
So, I wipe the Lacie with Disk Utility so it is Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Once finished, I begin the process of moving projects (3 in total) back to the Lacie. Two of the projects are completed works with transitions, audio file, titles and the like. One is just clips in the clip pane, none in the timeline. I moved them all at once.
When I did, I checked them before I would delete them off the Mercury. When I did, both of the completed projects loaded properly--the clips do show in the timeline. But, in the preview window, all I have is a blank white screen. When I play, nothing happens.
I have not erased anything, changed anything, thrown anything away--nothing. And, they still work perfectly on the Mercury (same computer, obviously).
This one really has me stumped. I am really irked that iMovie has apparently become such a messed up program. Worse, this has been out for some time now (I had not used it yet, but I got iLife last year some time). I can't believe there are all these issues all this time later and obviously Apple has done nothing or little to correct these problems. I consider iMovie a real flagship program to model the ease of use and blah blah blah that we all know concerning Apple.
OK, sorry for venting---anyone with any ideas? Did I mess up the drive when I wiped it? Is this merely the program? Something between the fact that the Mercury is NOT Journalled? Any help will, as always, be appreciated.

    Thanks David---
The Permissions are the same for both, on both hard drives.
I have not repaired permissions on either.
I did shut down the computer last night and this AM, upon starting again, had the same problem.
I did attempt a few fixes--I moved the clips from the timeline back to the preview pane. I had one clip already there and it would play perfectly. When I did that, with a clip from the timeline and then moved it back, it would show up and play. But, upon hitting the next clip, it would stop playing at the first transition.
Some of the transitions are from a Third Party (Gee). Remember, though, they played perfectly fine from Drive B. I have not attempted, however, to put the Gee effects into iMovie 6. As I said earlier, I haven't used the program on my computer since the Fall. Now, using 6.0.3, I don't see my GeeThree effects anywhere, nor have I tried to put them in. But, from the Drive B (and originally in the drive A), the movie plays fine even though the added clips are not present for me to use in any new project.

  • IMovie Can't Find Moved Projects

I am trying to move all of my iMovie Files (events folder and projects folder) from an external drive to my internal drive. I have moved the event files successfully from within iMovie. But I don't know how to move the project files. I tried moving them manually, but now iMovie doesn't see the projects anymore.

How did you move the projects folder to an external drive in the first place, if it was with the use of a symlink then you should be able to copy your projects folder back to its default location (in your movies folder) and delete the symlink.

  • Moving project breaks merged clips...

    Hello,
This is a complex and difficult problem to describe by writing, apologies if it's not clear. I've been working for several months on a large project that was shot double system: video imported as Pro Res (shot in HDV) and audio (recorded on DAT) that was transfered to aiff files. So I had 43 cassettes of video (with each shot automaticall being it's own clip - as it was HDV) and then 13 one hour aiff files of the DAT audio. In FCP I broke down each video clip and synced it with it's audio and created merged clips. I had trouble while creating the merged clips as detailed in this thread (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1818825&tstart=0). Originally the merged clips when opened has the audio and video totally out of sync and were useless, and when I went back and made the reel names match between the DAT aiff files and the video, then the re-merged the clips they were in sync. So everything has been okay since then.
Now, after working for months on one computer, I moved the entire project to another computer. I copied all of the files from the old computer into the new computer so the files and everything are the same. But upon opening the project on the new computer everything is offline and I need to re-connect all of the media. However when I do reconnect it all, now all of my merged clips (there are atleast 2000 of them) are all out of sync again (of note, when I reconnect I always get the error message "reel names doesn't match" and I choose "continue" as when ever I choose "try again" it wont reconnect the media). Is there any other way around this issue other than having to go back and spend another 3 weeks laboriously manually changing the reel names of and re-re-mergeing each of the thousands of indivdual merged clips (in order to have them be useable, in-sync merged clips)? Even if I do this, I know that in a few weeks I will be bringing the project back to the orginal computer, and again everything will be off line and then I'll have to once again change reel names for each clip, and re-re-re-merged them to get it all working again. Does anyone have any ideas or insights into this issue? Has anyone else atleast had to deal with this issue? Thanks!

It sounds like when you moved the material, you simply copied the folders instead of using Media Manager.
Preventing your problems is why MM exists. While MM may have it's detractors (I've been one of them), it has been improved in the more current FCP versions.
Read very carefully through the section in the Manual that covers it then use it to create a transportable copy of your project.

  • Bug in 10.1: Moving projects to events

I converted a bunch of projects after installing 10.1, which now appear under Updated Projects. I am now trying to move each of the updated projects to its corresponding event, which appears to be the way that the new 10.1 libraries are meant to be organized.
I can just drag and drop small projects, containing say 20 min or less footage, to different projects fairly quickly. However, once I start to drag a project containing an hour or more of DV or HD footage, the spinning ball appears. I literally have to drag the spinning ball to the target event, and apply a weight onto my mouse so that it continues to be pressed down. I then have to leave my computer for several minutes, sometimes 10 minutes or longer, until the spinning ball returns to a normal mouse cursor, and the project actually gets moved to its event. This is ridiculous.

    Hi !
I found out where the problem is. On startup Default setting is checked in this is problem. When you uncheck this option, encoding list is not repopulated. So you have force it (by closing Preferences window down and opening it again) and then it works. Coworker of mine disovered this quite accidentally. This should be fixed, by either populating list always, or repopulating list after option is checked. I suppose first option would be better.

  • Close FPGA VI Reference breaks when moving project...

I created a cRIO project with an FPGA target, and assigned the output of Open FPGA Reference to an indicator.
When I moved the project to a different computer, the wire to the indicator broke, so I selected "Bind to Typedef..." on the Open FPGA Reference node, replaced the indicator, reconnected all the local variables from old indicator to the new one, and deleted the old one. So far so good.
But now, when I move the project to a different computer, the wire to the Close FPGA VI Reference breaks.
If I delete and replace the broken wire whenever I open the project on the new computer, everything's fine. Am I stuck with that? It could be worse, I guess, but I'd like to fix this for real. Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Ron,
I do not believe that there are any other workarounds for this behavior.  I've been attempting to fix this myself in another way, but it seems that due to the simplistic nature of the close reference vi, it is not possible to go about this in another way when distributing applications.  I will try to see if we can make a product suggestion for this in the future releases of the software.

  • Video changes when moving project over to CC (2014.2)

I have just moved across a project from Premiere Pro CC to Premiere Pro CC (2014.2).
A notice popped up to say that the file had to be converted, after doing so, alot of the footage and sub clips are not actually what i have edited, it is from different times of the video?

thanks i appreciate the advice, however that's where the problem originally lies. After perhaps prematurely clearing to cache database to free up space before i had finished the project, it now get's stuck whilst trying to conform. This time it has got stuck whilst auto saving which i will now turn off, however i am worried i will have to wait a very long time untill all the video conform as this is a big project with a large number of video files.

  • Titles don't show after moving project

Anyone got any ideas?  I created a slideshow in PE7 with titles.  Worked fine and I rendered it to a WMV file.  I then moved the project to a different PC (same OS and version of PE) by copying the raw footage, the project folders and prel file.  The project opens fine on the new PC and behaves normally in all respects except that the titles are not visible when playing the slideshow within PE.  They are there on the second video track as well as the asset list and can be moved and edited normally.  While in edit mode (double click the title), they show superimposed over the slide as expected, but as soon as I drop out of edit mode and play the slideshow, they go invisible again.  Video level in the titles is at 100%.
A second project (video instead of a slide show) was also moved at the same time and in the same way.  It also incorporates titles and they ARE visible when the project is played in PE.
Did I perhaps miss copying a file that is not stored with the rest of the project?
    Paul
PS:  What is with the "points" system?  When I created this post I was asked if it was a question.  Since it was, I said YES.  Then I saw when I posted it that I get one correct answer for 10 points or two helpful answers for 5 points.  Huh?  Or is it the other way around... I can GIVE 10 points for a correct answer?  Did I miss the "rules" somewhere?  Or are the points meaningless and I should just ignore them?
Note that it said I had 15 minutes to unmark the post as a question, but I can't find anywhere to do that.  No, wait.... I found it and un-marked it.  Turns out that part of the verbiage that said I had 15 minutes to unmark the post as a question was a non-underlined link.  Not visible as a link unless you hover over it.  Un-marking the post as a question doesn't seem to have done anyting to the post..... so what is the point of the points?
Not liking the new and "improved" forum much yet.  Too slow and too confusing.
    Message was edited by: paulgoelz

Hmmmm.... I was not aware that titles could be enabled or disabled.  I'll have to look.  That would certainly fit the symptoms.
If by opacity you mean the video level line, yes it is at 100%.
As for exporting titles, there are quire a few.... too cumbersome to one at a time.
FWIW, I had this typed up before lunch but when I posted it, the process froze.  I finally gave up and closed the browser and went to lunch.  Fortunately, I have gotten in the habit of hitting <CTL> C before posting so after lunch I was able to paste the text into a new reply window.  Let's see if it works this time......
I appreciate that this forum is here but I have to say that I don't read it anywhere near as often as I used to because it is so painfully slow.  I still think it is a Java thing.... when it is slow and unresponsive, CPU is maxed out.  Definitely not acceptable for a page that is after all mostly static text.  But I have to say that is par for the course in my experience with PE.  Sorry, I just could NOT resist.....
No on the points... I unmarked it as a question thinking (falsely, it turns out) that there might be a points "budget" and I was only allowed so many.  I have seen that on other support forums.
Maybe I'll go to a lesser used forum and create a second identity and then answer my own questions and rack up points.  How silly.

  • Moving Project

I'm moving my Help project with many baggage files from one
machine to another with different directories. How do I handle the
file references in the project, or do I have to be concerned about
that? Does Robo7 take care of that?
    Thanks

Hi SSWoods and welcome to the RH community.
Are you referring to links to other help topics that exist
inside the project? If so, it doesn't matter where you place the
project files so long as the same RH project folder structure is
used - it will if you just copy and paste in Windows
    Explorer.

  • Moving Projects; Duplicating Events- Problem

Hi, I know that I can copy events and projects from an internal drive to external storage device by dragging them to the connected drive; moving them by holding down the command key while dragging.
The problem I'm having is that events that are referenced by multiple projects are being copied each time i copy over a project that references the event resulting in multiple instances of the event on the external drive. If I copy the first project and then copy a different project, i'm told that "clips used in the project are not the hard disk..." But the event with the clips ARE already there on the external drive. (I can tell they're there because if I select the project on the external drive and then select the event in the Event Library, there's a little red line on the clip indicating that's it's been used in the selected project)
    Am I missing something here?
    Thanks for any help
    Chris

Thanks so much for responding! That all makes sense, and I was concerned about editing from the server directly because of bottlenecking, so I will continue to have my current project on my local drive and then move it later.
Can you clarify this for me:
"create a sparse disk image on the server, mount it"
Does that mean I create a "shortcut" on my desktop to the area in the server where it goes and then archive my projects to it?
One more question, when I hide my events/files as you show in your screenshot, isn't it still housing my footage on my local drive and therefore eating up space?
A  disk image is a special kind of file that you can double click and mount as if it were a hard disk.
The word "sparse" means that it will grow only as you add content to it. So you can create a sparse disk image with size, say, 50GB, but if you only add files that occupy 1GB, that's the space it will take on disk; it will grow as needed to accomodate more files (assuming the actual disk where the image resides has available space, of course). You create disk images in Disk Utility.
You probably have used disk images a lot without maybe realizing it. The dmg files that contain installers for many applications are disk images.
Regarding the hidden events: yes, if they are still on the drive they will still occupy space. If the matter is freeing space on the drive, this will not help; but if the matter is making FCP X work faster and use less memory, it will.
And you could just as well take the events and "hide" them in a different drive.
