Moving Project Files

Hi, I'm trying to de-clutter my projects.  I would like to take an existing project and save it as a new project and transfer ONLY the audio files that are on the arrange screen onto a new project folder.  I have multiple takes of drum, bass, guitar and vocals.  I've been splicing the best parts of those takes together.  But I have GBs of audio files that I'd like to store on an external hard drive.  Is there a way to do this.  If not, no worries.  Thank you.

Hi
Check out the File:Project:Consolidate function.

  • Help moving project file

I want to move a project file from one FCP 6.0.2 to another FCP 6.0.2. All the media is on an external drive and will be automatically relinked.
Does anyone have any experience with this? General advise, knowledge, issues would be very aprpeciated.
    Best regards,
    Martin

Should be a problem at all; it may not automatically relink, but even so, it will be easy; at worst, you will be notifed of offline media when opening the project on the other system. When prompted to relink, you will probably only have to relink one file, and the rest will relink automatically.
At best, you will have to relink nothing, just open the project normally, as long as your new machine sees the external media drive before launching FCP.

  • Cannot open existing Project File - General Error

I recently copied some FCP 4.5 projects from one drive to another (drag and drop) due to drive space issues. I did NOT use media manager to do this. I did not delete any files before I went back to try and open the project in the original location. Instead of the project loading, I got the "General Error" message. I could not open the newly copied version either. I deleted all rendered files I could find, no luck. My scratch discs are not located in one area (since some have been moved too), and I wonder if the links have gotten scattered. Does this have anything to do with this problem? If one moves an existing project's scratch disk files to another location, will it cause this problem? Any help will be appreciated. My deadline approaches quickly.

Moving project files shouldn't mess things up, unless you've updated FCP version.
I see you're on Tiger...have you been able to work FCP 4.5 projects on that OS/QT, in the past?
Moving the scratch files will drop the link, but you should be able to 'reconnect media' to get them back, provided you can get your project files to open.
Have you tried opening an autosave version of the project files in question?

  • I moved the project files and now I can't get them back into iMovie 11

I was working on a project but I ran out of disk space before I could finish it. Now, for this very purpose, I have an external hard drive with plenty of space on it. So I tried moving the folder with all my project files onto the external hd, and now iMovie can't find my project anymore. With iMovie '06 it was as simple as hitting "save as" and saving the project to the external hd, but I guess that's not complicated enough for the new version. Now I can't get into my project. I even try clicking on the actual project file, and it goes to iMovie as if the project was about to open, but nothing happens. So I fear I wasted a lot of time working on that project only to have to start all over because I ran out of disk space.
Someone please tell me there's a way to get the project files open again. Thanks

that is a simple one and should be a routine after purchasing a new drive (in a Mac-only environment!):
    • on your Mac, Apps/Utilities you'll find Disk 'Utility'
    • on the left lane, you'll notice your connected hard drive(s)
    • select it, click on the 'erase' tab
    • NOTE: FORMATTING A DRIVE MEANS ERASING ALL CONTENT ON THAT DRIVE!
that's why you should do it as step#1 after purchasing a new drive

Do some testing to get your method working right with some less than important footage.
Copy/paste files where you want then.
Use the FCE Reconnect feature to tell FCE where the newly copied files reside.
Make sure the new location and files are working as expected with your Projects.
Delete the original files if no longer required.

1 - without specifics I have no idea how to help
2 - the question was "are you trying to use them in iPhoto? " - it sounds like you are - to do so you will have to export them from Aperature and import into iPhoto
3 - for information on how to use them in Aperature then you need to ask about how to use Aperature in the Aperature forum as it does not involve iPhoto

  • HT1026 Moved iMovie files to an external HD- Now have a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles.

I have foolishly moved my files to an external HD without following this advice. Now I'm left with a project full of 'Source clip cant be found' yellow triangles. Am I seriously going to have to start again or can I move them back somehow? They are from a variety of events and having tried moving some of them back into the imovie events folders using finder, I'm having no luck. Any help?!?

The other thread I found is here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1908460&tstart=15
I had some initial success after moving my projects and events on to the ext drive. iMovie reconnected the missing source clips and all of my projects played fine, with music and video intact. Hooray!
However I opened iMovie last night only to discover the source clips missing again. The music and photo stills are fine, it's just the iPhoto video. When I pass the cursor over the ! it tells me it is looking for the files on my HD even though they no longer exist there as I chose the MOVE option, not the COPY.
    Agh!
I also tried the consolidate media option which tells me not all of the clips and events are on my ext drive (funny that they were yesterday) but when I click the option to move them, nothing happens.
Do you still have a copy of the events on your ext drive? Can you try copying them over again?

  • Moved projects to new disc, get "Where is the File?"

    Hi,
I moved from an XP system with PE 7 to Windows 7. That didn't work out well so I upgraded to PE 10 and got the 64 bit version.
On the previous computer, I had my projects on the "E:" drive, a secondary hard disk, and I also had an "F:" disk. On the new one, the only hard disk is the "C:" drive and I put the folders from E and F on C.
So where I had files called:
    "E:\Marketing\Video\Project A"
    I have:
    "C:\E\Marketing\Video\Project A"
InDesign and Illustrator are smart enough to recognize the change and find the links. But not PE. I have to do a search on each file name when it asks where they are, and they are not all in the same folder.
Is there a way to search/replace these links? Or another, easier way? I have lots of projects and don't look forward to fixing all the links one at a time.
    Thanks,
    Joe

Well, there's a better way to do it than  you did it, Joe. If you'd have used the program's Project Archiver feature, you could have moved all your files over without losing the links betwen them.
    But oh well.
When you open an old project file for the first time it will ask for help locating the media files. Once you browse to one, the program should see all of the others in that folder and add them automatically. If they're in a bunch of different folders, however, you'll have to track them down one at a time, unfortunately.
BTW, you aren't opening projects created by earlier versions of the program in version 10, are you? That may possibly work if the projects were created in version 9. 9 and 10 are pretty close. But generally, if you open a project created in an older version of the program with a newer version of the program, you get buggy behavior and sometimes total corruption.
So if you're doing that, make sure you keep a copy of the original project file some place so that you can go back to it with an older version of the program is things start going wacky.

  • 2 complete FCE projects, files moved or missing, and memory full----help!

    I have a
    MacBook Pro version 10.4.10
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory: 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    and purchased the FCE HD.
After completing FCE projects-exporting to iMovie-sharing it over to iDVD-and burn to DVD, I was and is still in a blur from what happens next.
When I tried to create another FCE project, it said low disc space, so I purchased a 160GB Seagate, and attempted to copy the finished FCE projects into the Seagate, but when I try and open the project so I'm certain if I need to go back and edit or burn another DVD, it will be there, then it says there are files missing, or error code 1309.
I then got nervous, read through the FCE .pdf for assistance, started moving files around, trying to copy whatever over to the external. Now, when I try and open the existing project, I can't
I may be over cautious, but because of it, I've used up all my memory. Now, I can't open the projects because I've moved the files around.
Right now, I am at a halt. Can anyone help me please, is there a way for me to reorganize my files so that I can open my existing FCE project as the final product, and then archive and move to the external drive, and still be able to open, edit, and burn again? I'm trying to clear the memory from harddrive so I can work on add'l FCE projects.
When I check Disk Utility for my Macintosh HD, the capacity is 148.7GB, and my available is 479.7 MB.
The 160GB Seagate's capacity is 149.0 GB, and the available is 93.0GB.
    Thank you for any assistance.

When you purchased the Seagate, did you format it Mac OS Extended?
    -Go into Disk Utility
    -Select the disk
-Make sure all your files are off the drive before you do this:
-Change Format to Mac OS Extended.

  • Re-interpreted footage metadata is lost when moving Premiere Pro CC 2014 project file to different computer

    Hi guys,
I believe this is just a bug in Premiere Pro CC 2014 (and other versions in the past), but I wanted to make sure it was on the PP team's plate for the next update, since it's detrimental to a workflow that include more than one computer or more than one editor on a project.
My team shoots a lot of footage in slow-motion (for instance, 59.94 for 23.976). Premiere's process to conform this footage is great. Modify -> Interpret Footage -> Assume this frame rate: "23.976".
Unfortunately, when we move this project file to another system, even if we are using a hard-drive that is synced to have the exact same source media files with the exact same file structure, we lose the footage interpretation metadata. Premiere Pro CC thinks this footage is 59.94 again, and our sequences are in shambles. All clips where the interpretation metadata is lost have "zebra pin stripes" on them wherever they exist in our sequences.
We have to manually re-interpret the footage, and then sometimes manually re-select in and out points. This is a work-around that enables us to push forward, but it's a barrier that makes collaborative editing extremely challenging and opens up rampant possibility for error. It's hard to locate every clip we need to re-interpret in some of our more complex projects, and even harder to avoid re-interpreting the wrong clips.
Looking forward to a resolution to this problem.

Guys I solved my own problem - thought I'd share with you how in case anyone else is having this problem -
    I came across this thread
Premiere Pro CC error message and crash
    which had the suggestion -
"Do tou have after effects installed? If yes, please try to import the main sequence into it and then export it as premier pro project from file/export ootion and then try to open that in premiere pro."
This didn't work for me too but I did try and import my existing project into a new project and copy all the files over. Works fine now.
I don't know if I will have the same issue again tomorrow so I'm going to render out a super high res video before I close premiere just in case

  • PSE 9 Organizer Slide show can't find the slide show project files after moving from XP to Windows 7

A bad computer virus forced us to move all our files and programs from XP to Windows 7.  The PSE Editor seems to be working properly, but the Organizer Slide Show can't find the project files.  The structure of each of the 15 slide shows (blank slides) is there and any text I had added, but the pictures and music are missing.  Our computer Tech is not too familiar with PSE and may not have the files in the right spot.  Evidently XP and Windows 7 are organized a little differently and use different names.  He still has all the PSE files from our old hard drive in a folder and probably just needs to know where to put them.

+Windows Vista has different file locations than Windows XP+
This is the problem - the iTunes ITL file from XP is using XP paths, which don't exist in Vista. Here are some directions that have worked for others:
    - Copy your entire iTunes folder --- not just the iTunes Music folder but basically everything under "My Documents" - to external storage
    - Copy those files to your "Music" folder on your Vista system. The end result should be that you have "Documents\Music\iTunes" on Vista, where you had "My Documents\My Music\iTunes" on XP
    - Put a fresh install of iTunes on the Vista system.
    - When you run iTunes for the first time, hold down the Shift key. If it asks you to select a library file, pick the one you just transferred over.
    - The end result should be your library, including all ratings, play counts and play lists, sitting on the new system.

  • Xcode Java - Moving the project file

A problem that has bugged me for a while...
If I create a new Java application using Xcode and later move the entire project file to another location, the references to the "aboutBox.java" and similar files retain the original paths. Thus, the project can not longer find them. I've tried a number of things to correct this but with no success. It seems so simple; there must be an easy way to accomplish it.
    Can anyone help me?

In rereading my question, I don't think I was very clear.
Of course I can make the project "movable" by changing the path for every file in it to be "Relative to Project" using using "get info". What I can't figure out is how to do this for the entire project in one step without have to change all of the files individually.
There must be a way. Anybody?

  • Moving an iMovie project file for editing on a different iMac

Does anyone know if an iMovie project file started on one iMac can be saved to a usb drive or dvd/cd to be opened on another iMac computer to continue editing? What I have done before is go to: movies>iMovie projects>selected file and save the selected file to a usb drive. I also save the pictures and voice overs/music files that I used with the iMovie project on the same usb drive. However, when I open the iMovie project file on another iMac all of the work that I had previously done is not there. I end up starting all over. I would like to start my project at home and do any finishing touches on the second iMac in order to decrease the time I have to spend at the second location. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

When you move files to your second iMac, they need to be in the EXACT location. If you have your videos and photos in a folder on your desktop named "Movie Stuff," and you just throw them into a folder in documents called "Stuff" on your second iMac, iMovie will not recognize the files. You need to create the same path as the first iMac. In this case, you would have to make a folder called "Movie Stuff" on your second iMac's desktop, and move the files there.
    Hope this helped!

  • MS Project Very Slow and Project Files Large when Using Shared Resource Pool

    Hello,
We are using MS Project 2010 Professional in our organization and using a shared resource pool so we can easily identify resource conflicts.  When we started this process many months ago the resource pool worked great.  Now that we have nearly
all of our projects (~40) using the resource pool, it has become essentially unusable.  Each project file that is sharing the resource pool is 12 MB or greater in file size, and most of the project files contain less than 100 lines.  Saving any file
takes ~4 minutes.  As a result, many of the resource managers and project managers are starting to avoid using MS Project which is undermining our original intent.
Any thoughts on what we could try to regain the usability, make the file sizes smaller, improve save times, etc.?  Will MS Project Server fix all of these issues?
    Thanks,
    Josh

If any of your PMs renamed, moved or over-wrote their project file whilst linked to the Resource Pool or a master, then the file may well have corrupted itself or the pool or both. With 40 files, you can guarantee one or more PMs will do one of the above,
so file corruption is a when, not if (2days or 2 years or more).
For 40 projects Project Server or any solution that copies data to a database so the resource data can be consolidated is needed. Project Server is not a simple application, it's a full server and requires proper training and processes to add value. And
it needs configuring by someone who knows what they're doing!
In the mean time try unattaching all project files from the pool, then create a new blank pool and re-attach.You will also need to File, Save as to repair each project file if needed. For bad corruption save as to a .xml format then re-import to a blank
    project.
Or, create a new master each time by inserting all projects into a new blank project, but deselecting the Link option. All tasks are then copied and the resource data consolidated. Record a macro to make creating this very quick and easy (provided your network
    isn't too slow).
