It should be straightforward. You can get Aperture to move all your files for you by ctrl+clickling on each project and selecting 'Relocate masters for project'.
Alternatively, you could manually copy the master files from your existing disk to the new disk and then use the Referenced File Manager to tell it where they are.
I recommend the first, and also recommend that before you begin, you make a backup either by using the vault, or by copying your entire Aperture library (in the Pictures folder). If you have a backup, you can go about the whole process with no fear.

  • Moving Aperture libraries while keeping iMovie project video links intact.

I am in the process of moving my Aperture libraries off my internal drive to an external drive.  The problem I found is that by do so, my iMovie projects that were using video clips from the Aperture libraries now have broken source links.  I have all my video clips managd by Aperture, not referenced.
The way I moved the libraries was simply drap the library files to the new desitination.  I can see the original clips in iMovie's event library after the move and thumbnails are generated; but my project links are not updated.
My question is that is there a proper way doing this correctly so my iMovie project links are still intact after the move?  Thank you in advance for your helps.

I have exactly the same question as the OP. I've been into digital photography for a while, and have been using Aperture for a short time, but have JUST started to shoot some video for fun. Video goes into my Aperture library, but I'm just using iMovie to mess around with the video. I export short clips to YouTube for the family to view. Eventually, I'll put these projects on DVDs and I know I'll have to delete them from the Aperture library for space reasons.
How are people handling this? Should I just move the video directly to an external hard drive, for example?
    Thanks.

  • Adobe Bridge 4 vs Iphoto 09 using referenced libraries

I've always used iphoto with referenced libraries, usually with no problem with an external HD with my imac. The reason: I don't want to consume my HD with hundreds of photos and video files and large photoshop files. Here's what I would like to do. I recently purchased Apple's new time capsule, and would like to do the following, store all these media files on the time capsule, with iphoto's library on my imac's HD and referencing those media files on the time capsule, wirelessly. My question is, would adobe bridge be a better way to view and track these media files rather than using iphoto? Any insight with either programs would be appreciated.
I do like using iphoto for creating web galleries with mobileme, and the occasional phonebook. In those instances, I usually copy over the files to my hd and copy them into iphoto so there are no corruption issues.
Oh, and the other reason to storing these files on the time capsule is so that my husband's pc laptop and my mac laptop (powerpc G5) would have access to these files too.

    1. You know that's not a supported use for a Time Capsule, right? And folks who have tried storing items other than Back Ups on there have had permissions issues etc.
    2. Running a Referenced Library is fraught with problems +should anything go wrong+. This is particularly the case where the Library and the files are stored on different volumes. If the path changes in any way you will need to resolve each alias individually. There is no need to have all the photos referenced if you want to store them on an external drive. You can easily run a Managed library from an external disk.
    3. I'm not sure what, if anythign, Bridge would bring to the set up. It's a file browser and not a Photo Organiser. You might want to post on an Adobe forum for more on Bridge. The one thing I will tell you is that the "file management" capabilities of Bridge make it lethal to photos also managed by iPhoto.

  • Problem with referenced libraries (after flash 5.5 trial install/uninstall)

I've been using flash builder 4 & flash cs5 with on problems.
I unstalled flash 5.5 trial version to have a play around, then uninstalled it. I also changed the flex sdk version flash builder was using so I could export and test stageVideo.
Now when making Flash Professional Project in flash builder ( and selectiong and selecting the main fla), the referenced libraries are not imported to the project, and all old predicts ( which have referenced librares and used to work) are looking for swc's held in the 'Adobe Flash CS5.5' folder, and so none of the code hinting is working.
    Help please

    Hi MoTor,
You would need to uninstall existing Flash Builder 4.5 on your machine and then install Flash Builder 4.6 in trial mode.
During installation, it doesn't accept the serial number of Master Collection. So, just install it in trial mode and make sure that the you select the same language as that of your Master Collection, during FB installation.
Now launch FB and it would then accept Master Collection CS 5.5 serial number.

  • WPF+MAF - addin referenced libraries are not loaded?

Hi! I'm new to Add-in framework. Now I'm trying to create WPF addin that returns UserControl (according to https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb909849(v=vs.110).aspx).
The problem is that when I try to get user control from addin, Exceptions are thrown:
    1. The first exception was "Cannot find resource named '<name>'. Resource names are case sensitive.". All the resources are stored in separate library and it worked fine when I did the same with MEF (before MAF)
    2. OK, I've removed all StaticResources and then I got another exception: "{"Could not load file or assembly 'Infralution.Localization.Wpf, PublicKeyToken=547ccae517a004b5' or one of its dependencies."}". This lib is used for localization.
Note: all needed libraries are in the same folder as the addin is
Are addin referenced libraries not loaded? Or where was I mistaken?

Yes, I had downloaded it (before writing my application) and tried to start it, but it does not work. Today I've tried it again and it still does not work.
    1. VS says there are no System.Xaml references at all projects (fixed)
    2. NullReferenceException is thrown at StackChanged event invokation - added check for null (fixed)
Now, when the solution is built, there are 6 warnings at AddInStore.Rebuild(path). The first says: "While examining an assembly for pipeline segments, got a TypeLoaderException" and there is
no the exception per se. (I could attach image, but it will be useless, because I have VS Express and not english ui language). So, 0 addins are found.

  • Syncing 2 referenced libraries ?

    Hi guys,
I would appreciate some advice on how to keep 2 independent referenced libraries in sync with each other. My setup is as follows -
1 iMac in my office with my entire photo library referenced from the iMac HD.
1 portable hard disk with its own referenced photo library. The library sits on the portable HD, the referenced photo structure is synchronized with the iMac using Deltawalker or Chronosync.
1 Macbook Pro with a library referencing the masters on the portable HD.
I do most of my work on the iMac, including ingesting and editing. I would also like the flexibility to use my MBP the same way when at home or on the road. Keeping whatever photos I ingest or delete in sync is not a problem, Chronosync does it for me.
I would like to know how to also keep my libraries in sync, but point to the correct referenced images.
    For example,
I tweak 100 images on my iMac. I would like to import those changes to my portable library, but have them point to the masters on the portable HD.
Is there any way of doing this efficiently?
    Thanks in advance,
    Viren
PS - I would like to keep my masters referenced for easy syncability, and to use other raw converters.

PS - I am aware of the 'Locate Referenced Masters' and Reconnect All option. It takes too long to do so, unlike Lightroom.

  • Moving multiple libraries

This is a bit more complicated than just moving a library, let me explain. My 30gb iPod was overflowing, so I bought an 80gb, filled that now, but the wife has my old one which she has nearly filled. That means I've about 100gb on the hard drive. I've bought a 250gb external which I intend to move everything onto.
Now the problem is how to do it. Jill has a separate library from me, as our tastes are totally different, so originally I was thinking of moving both libraries, which is more complicated than the single library suggestions I've seen.
the other option is to add her library to mine, then use playlists to keep the two of them separate.
Either way is going to be problematical. Anyone got any ideas which would be the easiest, and how to do it?
    thanks
    Colin

If you're using the same Windows account (log-in) then you must be toggling between iTunes libraries by booting iTunes while holding the Shift key, right?
Regardless, if you have two separate iTunes libraries and you want to move both libraries to an external drive, it might be cleaner to use the "Consolidate Library" utility in iTunes. This essentially copies your library to a new location, which in your case you will do twice -- once for your library and once for Jill's. This will keep your libraries separate and not co-mingle your music.
Consolidating to a new location is not necessary in the newer versions of iTunes -- you can simply move your iTunes folder to a new location and next time you launch iTunes it will prompt you to "Choose Library" or "Create Library", in which case you'd choose the "iTunes Library.itl" file in the new location. However, in your case it sounds like some songs may be common to both libraries which might mean the same native files are used for both libraries. If that's the case, then Consolidating would be the easiest way to move the libraries without losing songs.
To Consolidate the libraries to a new location:
1- Create backup copies of both library files in case something goes wrong (just the "iTunes Library.itl" file for each library).
2- Create separate folders on your external drive for your libraries.
3- Open the first iTunes library and change the iTunes preferences for the iTunes Music Folder to be in the new location. Also set your preferences to "Copy files to iTunes music folder when adding to library" so that future additions to the library go to this location on your external drive.
4- Save the preferences and then select Advanced/Consolidate Library. Let iTunes copy your media to the new location. When complete, check "Get Info" on a few items to make sure that iTunes is showing them on the external drive.
5- Close iTunes and open the other iTunes library. Repeat steps 2 - 4 but using the other location on the external drive.
6- If you're certain that both libraries copied to the external drive, then go back and delete the original libraries on the computer to save disk space.
7- Optional -- get another external drive to back up your other external drive (and other files on your computer).

I have installed NWDS 7.1 SP11 and I referenced SAP system library (Variable SAP_SYSTEM_ADD_LIBS) in my project's build path... whenever I close and re-open the IDE, the referenced libraries are gone from package explorer and I get compilation error.

  • Will Referenced Libraries Sync Changes

I know this is a newbie question, but I haven't been able, for whatever reason, to find a solid answer. I'm in the midst of moving over to Aperture but I'm doing it slowly and incrementally, perhaps too cautiously. My question is this:
If I import an iPhoto library as a referenced library into Aperture 3 will the changes I make in Aperture be reflected in the iPhoto library? So, if I change the name of a photo in Aperture will it also be changed in iPhoto? What about the other way around, say merging an event in iPhoto. Will that be synced to Aperture?

I suppose my caution is due to having updates screw things up in the past and having to spend days untangleing and restoring.
Better safe than sorry! Aperture has a steep learning curve, and it is very advisable to get familiar with the basic concept and to plan the design of the Aperture Library carefully, before investing to much work into a poorly designed Library.
The iPhoto library will be a separate A3 Library. I figure I will eventually make 3-5 libraries.
In iPhoto it was necessary to have several Libraries, because it is not dedesigned to cope with very large libraries. One of the big advantages of Aperture is, that it is capable to hold all of your images in one single Library, without noticable loss of performance.
My Aperture Library holds all my images, startig 1970.  So it is easy to use the organizational features of Aperture to build smart albums with different criteria for your complete stock of images. I have smart albums showing sunsets, lions, bridges, landscape shots, computer graphics, etc.
If you split your library you will loose the advantage to combine any image with all other images in albums, books, or slideshows, without gaining any advantage.
To structure your projects thematically, group them by putting related projects into folders.

  • Moving referenced masters to iMac from mac book air

I have searched different forums and posts, and still cannot find the most appropriate way to accomplish what I am trying to do.
I currently have my aperture library on my mac book air with masters and all revisions as referenced files located on external HD. I recently purchased the new iMac with enough storage to keep my masters on the internal HD. I was able to copy my library from MB Air to iMac, and now facing a dilemma what is the best way to move my masters with all revisions to the internal drive on my iMac, and the second question, would it be possible later on to keep them on two places, one as referenced to my MBA on external HD, and the second set on my internal HD on iMac as managed.
I would love to take my MBA on a trip as I always do, import my pictures to it's library, and then when I come home - move them to iMac. I think that part could be easily accomplished by exporting the project and re-imiporting it to another computer, and that should update the library????
Does anyone have the same set up, and managed to accomplish what I need.
I am going to throw another wrinkle that might help someone to explain to me if it is reasonable solution.
I could probably archived the current library from MBA and start the new library, maybe it is going to be easier and make Aperture (iPhoto) DB to work a bit faster? But how to move the library along with originals (or maybe it is just a matter of moving the library to the external HD, and done deal), and that the reference iis not going to be broken?
I hope I did not confuse anyone.

Just connect the HD with the referenced originals on it to the iMac and run Aperture with the library you copied over from the Air. Given how OS X and Aperture keeps track of disks there is a good chance that the library will connect to the referenced originals on the HD.  If it does not you will need to reconnect them to the library. Use File->Locate Referenced Files.
Once the originals are connected to the library run File->Consolidate Originals. This will copy the original from the HD and put them into the Aperture library. All aspects of the library will be preserved.
Keeping two libraries on separate system is honestly not one of Apertures strong points. There is no easy built in way to accomplish this. There are workflows that folks have come up with but none are really seamless.  I'd get the library running in the iMac and once that is done you can look into running parallel libraries.

  • Moving referenced masters in Bulk

I currently have a 500gb drive on which I store my referenced master images and I just filled it up. I purchased a larger RAID 10 system to upgrade my storage and would like to migrate all of my masters to it.
I know that I can go through each project and migrate it to the new storage, but there is somewhere in the neighborhood of 100 projects that I would have to move one at a time. I was hoping there was a way to mass migrate images from one external to another, but I have yet to find one. Is there some way I could clone the 500gb of images from my current storage to the new one just using finder and then trick aperture into thinking the new storage was the old one?
    Any other suggestions or help?
    Thanks in advance

go to a browser view with all of your photos - select them all, then use relocate masters... you will probably want to use a subfolder option like project name, or create your own subfolder format.
This will take a long time but works fine.

Ps. You can leave all your old masters where they were as well while moving.

  • Moving Referenced Photos to new Drive

I have my media files on external drives and these are getting full now. My main media drive contains 480GB of files and 380GB of them is my referenced Aperture Library (30K+ pictures and video clips).
For some tests I want to put the data onto newer and bigger drives.
Copying the whole disk in the Finder works well and is done after approx. 2 hours (maybe a bit more).
In Aperture I have to show all files, select them all and choose "Locate Referenced Files...". In the Dialog I choose the location for any one of the 30000+ listed files and search it on the new Drive. Then I'm doing a "Reconnect All".
So far so good. But now one of the most time consuming Aperture Processes starts to work. Unfortunately this is a modal process and I can't do nothing but staring at this slow process.
OMG it is so unbelievable slow.
FOUR hours later the job was done and everything is fine.
Is there something I can do to speed up that task? I mean - has this to be that slow? It takes longer than copying more files in the Finder. Hello?
I'm on hold with my further Drive test because the whole thing takes too long at the moment.
    Any suggestions?
(I refreain from using "Relocate Masters" inside Aperture because the Referenced files are spread over the media disk and I want to clone the whole disk outside of Aperture.)

I have just replicated the issue you are having and can confirm that TWO completely different Aperture 3 installations behave exactly as you describe. I have not dug into WHY this no longer works but it does not - volume name, mount point, partition name, device name, everything that comes to mind and meets the eye is identically but the masters remain off-line until you "reconnect'.
I cannot believe that Apple did this on purpose - I can assure you I have done this many many times in the past and it worked fine. If it is a mistake and should work let's hope it gets fixed - if it works like this on purpose I would love to know that possible rationale would make this make any sense whatsoever. This is a big big problem for multivolume libraries.
Does anyone's Aperture 3 installation let them do this?

  • Are Vaults necessary with Referenced Libraries?

My Referenced Library is ~12 GB and my Vault for the same library is ~12 GB. Both reside on the internal HDD, while the images reside on an external HDD. If I just manually backup my .aplibrary file to another drive, isn't that the same (theoretical) thing as putting in it a Vault? I do understand that each time I make a change to the main .aplibrary, to sync it my external drive will require moving 12 GB each time vs updating a Vault on an external drive (much quicker).
I know the Vault keeps track of all the keywording/adjustments/etc... but so does the original .aplibrary file.
But to my original question, should backing up the .aplibrary accomplish the same thing (in case of internal HDD failure) as having a Vault on an external drive?

Backing up the library does the same thing as creating a vault for the library, essentially. So no, if you have a good backup plan, they're not strictly necessary.
Note, having a vault on the same drive as the library itself is only marginally helpful. A single HD failure will kill both

  • Is it Possible to delete from the "referenced libraries" list?

    Hi,
Ive built a pathto a certain file and now it appears in the "Reference Libraries" drop-down thing.
i wish to delete it but the "delete" option is disabled when i right click it. and pressing delete on the keyboard has no effect accordingly.
is it possuble to delete such a library?
    Thanks

Ok found the answer, so for anyone interested, u right click on the path u wish to delete, choose BuildPath and then remove from build path
u can manage the whole "referenced library" by right clicking it and choosing BuildPath -> configure buildpath

  • Upgrading to 6 and moving several libraries in

    Hi,
OK, here's my situation. I have several iPhoto libraries on my old iBook that I have copied to my new iMac. I have been reluctant to import them into iPhoto 6. I'd like to do it once, and have everything work perfectly-that's what Macs are all about, right?
So, I have a couple of libraries, and I have several folders of jpegs, not in iPhoto libraries. Some of the pics are duplicated in several libraries. How can I import them all into iPhoto and maintain the library information- keywords, etc.
Is there anything I should look out for? It seems straight forward, but then again, so did moving images out of iPhoto from the finder when I did that 2 years ago- before all the warnings about playing in the finder.
    thanks in advance

Richard, If the library you are using now has a few photos in it you might want to File/export those to a folder on the desktop and import them into the main library after the big libraries are merged..
Now holding down the Option key launch iPhoto and keep the Option key held down until you get a message window. In that window click the button to open another library. Take a look at the screenshots to get a better idea.
When you launch iPhoto holding down the Option key this is the window you will get.
Create a new library or choose a library to open
Choose to create a new library if that is what you want to do, or choose a library to open by clicking the "choose" button.
If you click the "create library" iPhoto will open with a brand new library for you to import images to. If you click "choose" then you will get this window.
    Open library
Navigate to where the library is on your computer, highlight it, then clcik the "open" button.
So basically you want to upgrade each library to version 6 first. Make sure the upgrade on each goes fine and you can see and work with the photos.
As each library is upgraded, go through the library and make sure your photos are organized and in albums. To find stray photos that are not in albums make a smart album whose conditions are "album" "is not" "any". Make an album with those photos.
Decide which library you want to be the main library to merge the others into.
I found that iPhoto library manager is pretty good at detecting duplicates, but your milage might vary.
