Moving Referenced Photos to new Drive

I have my media files on external drives and these are getting full now. My main media drive contains 480GB of files and 380GB of them is my referenced Aperture Library (30K+ pictures and video clips).
For some tests I want to put the data onto newer and bigger drives.
Copying the whole disk in the Finder works well and is done after approx. 2 hours (maybe a bit more).
In Aperture I have to show all files, select them all and choose "Locate Referenced Files...". In the Dialog I choose the location for any one of the 30000+ listed files and search it on the new Drive. Then I'm doing a "Reconnect All".
So far so good. But now one of the most time consuming Aperture Processes starts to work. Unfortunately this is a modal process and I can't do nothing but staring at this slow process.
OMG it is so unbelievable slow.
FOUR hours later the job was done and everything is fine.
Is there something I can do to speed up that task? I mean - has this to be that slow? It takes longer than copying more files in the Finder. Hello?
I'm on hold with my further Drive test because the whole thing takes too long at the moment.
Any suggestions?
(I refreain from using "Relocate Masters" inside Aperture because the Referenced files are spread over the media disk and I want to clone the whole disk outside of Aperture.)

I have just replicated the issue you are having and can confirm that TWO completely different Aperture 3 installations behave exactly as you describe. I have not dug into WHY this no longer works but it does not - volume name, mount point, partition name, device name, everything that comes to mind and meets the eye is identically but the masters remain off-line until you "reconnect'.
I cannot believe that Apple did this on purpose - I can assure you I have done this many many times in the past and it worked fine. If it is a mistake and should work let's hope it gets fixed - if it works like this on purpose I would love to know that possible rationale would make this make any sense whatsoever. This is a big big problem for multivolume libraries.
Does anyone's Aperture 3 installation let them do this?

  • Moving photos to new drive in Elements

Want to move photos to new drive in Elements 8.  Have purchased 11 and want to move the photos  before I  install Elements 11.  What is the best way to go about this.  Couldn't find anything new on the forum.  I asked this question  in 2010 and that's the same answer I found today.  Anything new?

You basically select thumbnails in the Organizer and then click:
    File >> Move
Then browse to your new location.
It cam be quite slow if you have a large catalog so it may be best to try selecting smaller batches.

  • Photoshop Elements 12 question....moving photos to new drive....because old drive full.

I have a external hard drive that is almost full......what is the best way to get photos moved from this drive .....to a new and larger external hard drive?

I would  like to move my entire catalogue from one external drive (that is almost full) to a new external drive with more room.  I have several drives with back ups of all photos.....so are you saying Move it.........using the Move from the drop down menus and move it from the old to the new drive.....and not restore it from a back up drive to the new drive?
The backup/restore process moves not only the picture files library, but also the catalog.
That's good especially if you want to share catalog and librarty with another computer.
If you prefer the default location for catalogs on your desktop, no problem. Simply use the catalog manager to move the catalog.
The drag and drop solution works:
Organizer: Moving folder trees or branches - Elements Village
(Sorry, I gave a wrong link in my previous post ...)
It's more flexible and reasonably safe. It looks faster, but if you want to be safe and do a backup first,  you'll gain nothing.
The problem with moving folders is the same than when you move folder trees from the explorer: be sure to move in an empty master folder to avoid folder names collisions.
If you want the catalog folder in the same external drive as the moved library, be sure to have the catalog folder outside of your library tree.

  • Moving TM backups to new drive

I have new larger external drive which i will use to store my video in one partition and for Time Machine backup of my internal drive on the other partition I have created.
Can I move the TM backups from an old drive to the new and then switch on TM to the new drive? In other words, can I move the place TM backs up to the new drive and not lose my history?

    Doug Clo wrote:
    Okay.
Intel Mac - that would be my processor?
    Yes.
I have Intel - and the partition map scheme is Apple Partition Map - so that is wrong?
The partition is formatted Max OS Extended (Journaled).
So if i understand correctly I need to reformat the drive?
I have two partitions on this drive. I've just moved a pile of stuff onto the other partition. Am I going to have to reformat the whole drive to get the TM working properly, and can I format just the partition I need?
Probably not (but it's the whole drive that's either GUID or APM).
Also check the old TM drive; see what it is, especially the Format.
There's some disagreement over this, but TM and most things will probably work on an APM drive. What won't is, if you ever put a bootable "clone" on it, an Intel Mac won't boot from it.
So I'd say, you're probably ok with the drive "as is" unless you intend to boot from it.
And yes, if you didn't specify erase, on the target, do so.
Post back with the results, and we'll see what else you might be able to do.

  • Moving Files & lrcat to new drive - lost edits

Hi, I recently dragged and dropped my lrcat & files to a new raid backup drive. When I started up LR it was 'empty' (I was in shock) so I reimported the CR RAW files into the folders as well as the devlop presets. The problem is that i have lost most of the editing I had dne to my images i.e they have reset.
Is it possible to retrieve the updated images from a backup and merge them into the current LR settings without duplicating? (or should I reset my LR and restore from the backup)?
    Thanks, need help!

    More info might help
    1. The files were copied and not moved? You've verified that the photos and catalog still exist on the original drive?
    2. If you find the catalog on the original drive and launch Lightroom with that catalog do the folders appear, but not the photos?
    3. If the photos and catalog were moved and not copied, what happens when you launch Lightroom with the catalog from the new location?
In any case it's very unlikely that you have to redo your work. Unless your catalog is gone or corrupted and you don't have any backups, the catalog still has all your changes, you just need to launch LR with the right catalog and point it to the files if necessary.

  • Moving i photo to external drive

    Hello
I need to clear up space on my mac book pro, so I purchased an external hard drive to copy my photos on to.
I just dragged i photo library icon from pictures, to my external drive icon in devices. It copied over, took a while as i have many photos. but, just to do a test I deleted an album of i photo from my mac book. When I plugged in my external, and opened i photo from it, the same album was gone.
    So are they linked still?
Is there a way to have i photo just running from my external so I can delete it on my mac book drive?
Lucky I didn't delete the whole thing.
    Thanks

    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    Regards

  • Moving system to larger newer drive

I have a healthy 250gb system drive that is just about filled up.
What is the best procedure for moving the image on the old drive to a new larger drive and still retain all of my application authorizations and whatnot.
I also use super duper to back up this drive.
    Thanks

Use SuperDuper to clone the current drive to the new one. Swap the drives. Boot from the new one.

  • Moved folders to a new drive, new drive letter help?

    Hi all,
I've got a bit of a problem that I'd love to find a really easy answer to.  I bought a new PC, migrated all my old images to a hard drive that I was using as a backup for the past few years of images (I put all images in year folders and make catalogs based on the year) AND I migrated to LR3 at the same time.  Now It wants to know where all these lovely files are.  I've tried right clicking on the drive letter under "Folders" but I don't get an option to find the drive, it seems the only way I can go about finding all these images is to go through and link each individual sub-folder (we are talking about 200 folders here).  And here is what hurts the most - every time I go to find the folder the damn picker reverts to opening the lightroom catalog folder not the last folder I was in.  Is there any easier way to go about this?
    Thanks in advance
    Hali

I can (and have been) doing that with indvidual folders but I was hoping for an answer that would allow me to do that with the drive letter.  And I don't get something that says update folder location it says "find missing folder"  which I guess is the same thing...but what a pain!  I do have all my folders under one master folder (Master folder is the year, sub folders are the days I've shot and where) I suppose I could just sync the whole "2009" folder but I'd lose all of my lightroom goodies like that I think.

  • Plan to move photos from one drive to another - Need advice

My C: drive is almost out of space. I want to move my photos to a new internal hard drive.
In PSA SE 3, I've already tagged these photos. I want to know what's the easiest way to move my photos from one drive to another without losing my tags. Will "Reconnect Missing Files" find the moved files on a new drive if I keep my path the same (except for the drive letter)? Or will I have to reconnect the files manually one-at-a-time?
    Any advice is appreciated!

I might. I think I have MySQL installed at home. I have MS SQL Server at work. Is the application data file Access-compatible? I'd love to be able to just hack the underlying data store.

  • Artwork no longer shows up after moving media to external hard drive

I recently, and successfully, moved all my media over to a continuously connected external hard drive. Although my media folder and all music, movies, and apps are there, No NEW art work downloads when I buy a new movie or song. I've also noticed that, under the old iTnes folder there are still folders there for Album Artwork/Cache/Download. Should these also be moved over to the new drive or somehow linked in some way?

If you moved the iTunes folder to your external drive, you moved the iTunes library file - iTunes Library.itl, which is in that folder.
You need to tell iTunes where it is, start iTunes with the shift key held down and iTunes should ask you to choose a library.

  • How to copy referenced photos from dodgy external drive to new drive when whole file will not copy due to error 36.

My external WD portable passport drive must be dodgy because I can't back it up or clone it or copy 3 of my 22 photo files to a new portable drive. I get error 36 as I attempt all 3 processes. I have copied my iPhoto library, iMovie events and most of my aperture referenced photos to the new drive. But cannot copy 3 files that contain the corrupted files showing just a grey triangle. I cannot delete or move to trash the corrupted raw photos.
How can I copy to the new drive any photos that aren't corrupted (grey triangle instead of photo or a photo that's just coloured horizontal broken lines) so I can then reconnect the referenced photos after copying them?
I am on late 2008 MacBook Pro with lion,
    Many thanks
    Bw

I've worked out how to copy and reconnect individual photos.
But can see that what's happening is that heavily edited raw photos are taking ages to load. Or not loading at all. And if opened go to the spinning wheel for 5-10 minutes. I am wondering whether to compress these or take them back to the originals or any other ideas would be very welcome.
    Thank you
    BW

  • Is there a way through aperture to move all of my referenced photos onto a new hard drive while maintaining the current file structure and still keep them as referenced files.

I just want to migrate all of my work (all photos are referenced) from one drive to another and have my aperture library start working off of my new larger hard drive.

Depending on how your folder hierarchy is organized you might be able to do this with file->relocate masters and one of the options of folder organization that is provided but... if you have complicated hierarchy that Aperture will not reproduce then you can just copy all the entire folder hierarchy to the new drive using finder and then use file->locate masters to reconnect them to Aperture like this...
    Aperture 3 – Locate Referenced Files « RB|Design
It's actually a bit easier if the old folder hierarchy/drive is disconnected when you do this for a few reasons.

  • Moving LR3 photo folder to a new drive

How can I move all my LR3 photo folders at once to a new drive so that LR3 knows where to find them?
    thanks, Jon-J

Thank you Cornelia and web-weaver -  I spent a couple of days fathoming and testing. Could you check out what I am doing?
I can begin to see how to archive (physically move) my images from one drive to another - meaning physically moving the images and develop settings, meta etc.  I think this is a normal procedure for a lot of photographers who have to keep a working PC uncluttered by archiving to an external or network drive.
To archive my photos (RAW and JPEG) I cannot use "Export", because the Export dropdown generates additional copies or additional originals without develop settings, meta, etc.,The 'original originals' stay in original physical location also.
To archive my photos by folder or by selection with settings, I must use "Export as Catalogue". This creates a new (let's call it temporary) catalogue and imports selected files or folders and associated catalogue data into the new catalogue, and at the same time makes a new physical copy of the photos. The Export as Catalogue dialogue enables user to chose a new catalogue name, and a (let's call it temporary) physical location. This copies  folderstructure\files to a subdirectory titled \Photo? Is it always a sub directory named \Photo\folderstructure\files, or is it coincidental because my original root directory happens to be \Photo ?
Nevertheless, via "Export as Catalogue" we retain original library and physically located files as-was, plus we get a new catalogue with duplication of meta and develop settings, et al, plus a physical duplicate of images in a new location - correct?
Then, if workflow was to archive by physical movement (move in OS terms), instead of archive by copy, then it would be necessary to manually delete physical files and directories from the original catalogue - correct?
Now if my archive drive has its own Archive Catalogue, I must not use Import to fetch in files and settings from the new (Export as Catalogue) catalogue generated previously. I must use "Import from Catalogue" otherwise the develop settings, meta, etc, are not imported to the archive catalogue.
After running "Import from Catalogue", if the physical file location was not where ultimately required on the archive drive, I must also delete the temporary located files, and perhaps the temporary catalogue.
This is where my testing brought me. No damage done so far. Now, when I "Import from Catalogue" a folder structure from my temporary Catalogue, LR did not import the full folder structure as there was some former remnants on the archive drive from a time before I bought LR. I guess LR  cross checked meta data somehow and decide there were some unaltered files already present on the archive drive, and decided to hide those from the importation process. Luckily I had noted the original export folder/file counts and verified the same import quantities. Luckily I had not deleted any original folders/files, nor temporary catalogue or temp folders/files. By searching the Archive drive I discovered where the remnants were lurking, and actioned appropriately.  Now I got a full 100% import of catalogue data and files and although they were imported as ..\Photo\ folderstructure\files    I could easily drag drop and rename as I liked.
So to complete a workflow of Moving folders and files from one drive to another (move in OS terminology), I must
    a) "Export as Catalogue" to a temporary catalogue and physical location.
    b) note the folder/file counts for verification later.
    c) "Import from Catalogue" the temporary catalogue and folder/file structure, at the same time verifying and import dialogue folder/file counts.
    d) Delete original physical files and catalogue information from original catalogue
    e) Rename, Drag and drop the imported folders/files as required, if the original \Photo\folderstructure\files directory structure is not exactly as required.
    f) Optionally, delete temporary catalogue, and physical files.
