Moving rented movies between various devices

The iTunes Store Movie Rental FAQ states that "You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only be viewed on one device at a time." I moved a rented movie from my Mac to my iPhone, but I can't figure out how to move the movie back to the Mac, even while the rental period is still valid.
How do I do that? Is it even possible?

Unfortunately that isn't what I wanted to hear, but had a bad feeling that was the answer. My ATV's are synced from an external hard drive where all my music resides. I maintain a different library on my MB.
It would not be worth the time to link to another library for 1 movie. I guess I'll have to rent movies to that library and then I could move them to another computer or ATV is that correct?
Can I stream a rented movie from my MB to a ATV? If so how?
Thanks for your help

  • Moving rented movies from Apple TV

I'm having a problem moving rented movies back from my ATV to my iMac.
The scenario is I rent a movie in iTunes on the Mac, move it to the ATV, and after watching it I then try to move them back to the Mac before the rental expires. It won't transfer back even though I'm connected to the Internet.
The "move" option exists in iTunes (I can select either "move" or "delete") in the ATV box. If I select "move" the movie graphic moves over to the Rented Movies field. The problem is that after I click on Sync the movie flips back to the ATV box as soon as it completes syncing so it doesn't become available to watch on the Mac.
I've tried this on several occasions and with different movies. No luck. It looks like it should work but never has successfully transferred back. The iTunes & ATV software are all up to date.
    Any ideas?

Yes. The movie rentals originate in iTunes on the Mac.
Perhaps it's easier to understand my situation. We have a number of young adults in the house. They often want to watch the same movies we rent if we tell them if it's worthwhile. The ATV is in our bedroom and my wife & I don't fancy having a half-dozen twenty-somethings piling on the bed to watch a rented movie. The Mac is in my home office. I would like to transfer movies back to it where they can watch or even transfer movies to an iPod & plug into a dock connected to the TV in our family room. I can't get the movie to transfer back (even though it originated on the Mac).
Normally any rented movies are in the ATV field (in my case called "Dad's Apple TV") and there's "move" & "delete" buttons. What I have been doing is to click on Move and then Sync. The movie icon does initially move to the Rented Movies field but it pops back the ATV field just as it finishes syncing.
Now an interesting thing has turned up this morning. We had rented a movie ("Date Night"...thumbs down) last Friday, watched it last night (Monday), and went to iTunes this morning to try once again to transfer it back to our Mac. This time the movie does not show up in the "Dad's Apple TV" field in iTunes even though it's been less than 24 hours since we first started watching it. The only thing that may be different is we fell asleep watching the movie and woke up hours later with the screen saver on. I can't say we've ever left a movie running through the credits to the very end before now.

  • I cannot transfer rented movies between devices in iTunes

I rented a movie. Dropped it into a new iPod nano. Transferred fine. Wanted to move it to apple tv or another capable video ipod. No luck. Any ideas?

It's not entirely clear to me what you're doing. As far as I understand, you need to move the rental movie from one device to another by going to the Movie tab for the device, going to the rental movie section, highlighting the rental movie and pressing the Move button. Also, the rental movie can only be on one device at a time. So, if it's on your Nano, it can't be on the computer or ATV.

  • How to share rented movies between devices

I have just downloaded some rented movies on my iMac and would like to transfer them to Airbook for a trip away.  What is the best way of doing this?

Sorry, but unless something's changed recently that I've missed, you cannot transfer a rented movie from one computer to another. You can only transfer a rental to an appropriate model of iPod, iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV. If you want the rented movie on your MacBook Air, you'll probably have to rent the movie again from the MBA.
    Regards.

  • Rented movie on two devices

I rented a movie on my iphone by mistake. My plan is to watch it on the ipad. Is there a way to transfer the movie to the ipad?
    Thank you!

    No, from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1657 :
If you download a rented movie on your computer: You can transfer it to a device such as your Apple TV (1st generation), iPhone, iPad, or iPod if it’s a standard-definition film (movies in HD can only be watched on your computer, iPad, iPhone 4 or later, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV). Once you move the movie from your computer to a device, the movie will disappear from your computer's iTunes library. You can move the movie between devices as many times as you wish during the rental period, but the movie can only exist on one device at a time.
If you download a rented movie on your iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch (4th generation or later), or Apple TV: It is not transferable to any other device or computer.

  • Moving Rented movies from computer to ipod

I need some help. I have a one year old ipod classic.
I cannot seem to move rented movies from my computer to my ipod.
When I plug my ipod to my computer and hit the movie tap, I do not see the movie.
The move is showing on my computer, but it does not give me a choice to move it to my ipod, like I have seen on other help sites.
Do I need to turn something on my ipod?
I have loaded TV shows to the ipod and watched them, but I cannot move the rented movies.
I checked to see if I have the updated software, and I do.
Can anyone suggest what I am doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The iPod you have (incidentally, the same one I have) can essentially watch TV shows, Movies, and Music Videos, but no rental movies. I was met with the same disappointment when I discovered I cannot put rented movies onto my iPod. It is sort of a shame, as I'm not entirely convinced there's a hardware element missing from my iPod preventing this from being supported.
Sorry I didn't have better news for you. You might want to consider emailing iTunes Store support and seeing if there's some way they can compensate for this, as the file purchased is not compatible with your device. Since the files are set to disappear after a certain amount of time within beginning playback, I'm almost sure they'd be able to determine whether you've viewed the movie yet.

  • Moving a Movie between Apple TVs

Started an iTunes rented movie on my ATV. Shortly thereafter I wanted to transfer it to another ATV in another room. The second ATV would not complete the transfer because it was necessary to stop the playback on the first ATV. I understand that, and stopped playing the movie, but could not find a specific "stop" or "delete" control. After putting the first ATV to sleep and turning the Television off, I returned to the second ATV. After restarting it, the movie in question was recognized and available, but I continued to receive the same message and was unable to start the playback of the movie. So I started a different movie without difficulty, only to lose the cost of the first movie.
How can one stop and delete a rented iTunes movie on ATV, freeing the playback for another ATV?
    Thank you.

A rental purchased through one Apple TV cannot be played on another device.  In order to play it on multiple devices you would rent it through iTunes on your computer and Home Share it to the Apple TV(s).
    Have a nice day.

  • I'm unable to transfer rented movies to my device

In the online instructions, it says in iTunes, to select the device connected, go to Movies tab in the device dialog, then the rented movie should appear there with a 'Move' option.
I have the latest version of iTunes and an iPad 3. When my iPad is connected to iTunes, if I follow the directions provided online, no rented movies appear, and therefore, no 'Move' option appears either.
Has the process changed for transferring rented movies from a computer (Windows) to an HD movie compatible device (iPad 3)?
    I appreciate any help!

Geesh - all this information and no  one has any clue to this? Not even someone from Apple?
Can someone at least point me in the right direction?

I Rented a movie on my iPhone. I can't see it on my ipad. I purchased a movie on the iPhone and that one I can see on the ipad. Why can't I see the rented movie? Very strange. I've been watching tutorials, googling and can't seem to find the answer.

  • Problem moving rented movie from laptop to iPad

When I go to move a rented movie from my macbook pro to iPad nothing happens and there is no dialogue box. Purchased movies sync fine. This is a new macbook pro so perhaps the new OS is having a compatibility issue with the iPad? Any ideas?

Did you click "Apply" on bottom right? See second picture.

You can't. A rental done on an Apple TV can't be played anywhere else.

  • Moving rented movies to iPod

I have searched for this and cannot find an answer, so apologies if it has already been addressed. I am using iTunes 8 with a 5th generation iPod on Windows XP. I rented a couple of movies and cannot find any way to transfer them to the iPod. When I synch, they do not show up in the Movies list, nor is there a separate entry for "rented movies." They do show up on iTunes as "rented movies," so I know they downloaded.

Rented movies can't be played on a Fifth Generation iPod and won't be transferred to it.

  • Moving rented movie

Can I move a rented movie from itunes to my ipad without a Wi-Fi connection as I am vacation and using my sisters computer.

well if anyone else is reading this. save yourself the trouble. I called tech support. they tried to hit me with, "your ipod is out of support" and it would be 35.00 for additional support to watch the 4.99 movie.
i countered with, its not the ipod thats the problem, its the itunes.
after lots of research the tech support guy said "you cannot move the movie from the ipod to the computer. only the other way round."
long story short, they said they would credit the account so i could re-download the movie to the computer - which i did but it did not say "free" - said, "you already downloaded this movie, are you sure you want to dl it again?" to which i answered yes.
i hope the account is not charged twice for the same movie.
in summary, it would be much easier if itunes simply told their customers somewhere, like on the main page, "you cannot move this movie from ipod to computer."

  • Rented movies on multiple devices

If I rent a movie through iTunes on my MacBook Pro, will I be able to sync and watch it on my iPad as well?

You can put it on the iPad, but it'll be deleted from the MacBook Pro if you do. A rental can only exist on one device at a time and will not play if manually moved between computers.
