Moving router connections
Presently have router connections in my basement. How hard is it to move connections to first floor?
For connectons, are you talking about something like a homerun? This is something where Verizon will install a splitter at your NID/enterance point that will filter out the DSL for the rest of your home. The DSL modem will be given it's own dedicated line.
If you don't have one of these, moving the router should be as simple as taking the modem/router upstairs and plugging it into a telephone line and power. If it syncs and your speeds are correct, it's probably good to go.
If you do need to change around any of the wiring, things depend on how your home is wired to begin with.

Moving router connection point.
Yesterday the BT engineer came round and installed Infinity in the house - everything works fine.
The problem is that connection point that I requested is only a temporary point - at somepoint I want to rig up a home network and put ethernet sockets in some rooms.
The original master socket was at Location A.
The engineer setup the open reach infinity socket at Location B.
The socket at Location A looks like this one:
http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/image/serverpage/image-id/635i42831032043407CB/image-size/original?v=mpb...
The socket now at Location B looks like this one:
http://phil.lavin.me.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/fttc-faceplate.jpg
Originally the socket at Location B was a plain old phone extension socket.
My question is; how can I go about moving the modem from Location B to Location A? Is it just a case of procuring another faceplate and fitting it at Location A? Or is Location B now the master socket and an engineer will be required to make Location B the master socket?
BTW; the engineer told me that it is copper running into the house not fibre optic cable.
Thanks,
Ben.
Solved!
Go to Solution.Yes socket B is now the master socket.
The only person/people that can move the master socket is Openreach or one of their appointed contractors.
If you want / need the modem at socket A you can install your own data cable.
Method A High quality RJ11 to RJ11 cable. The maximum length being 30 meters. This cable should be as short as possible as it directly affects overall connection speed.
Method B using the centre pairs of wires from the cable in method A you can connect on to the back of the RJ11 socket inside the master socket. Others please comment - Are you allowed to do this yourself? I know Openreach normally do it this way.
Keeping the modem at Socket B and the router / HomeHub at socket A
Method A Connect the two together using a longer CAT5e or better network cable. This can be up to 100 meters long.
Method B Conenct the two together using ethernet over power adapters. Others please comment!
Yes the technology you have brought into is FTTC, Fibre to the Cabinet. The connection between your premises and the telephone exchange goes via a local street cabinet. Your connection to the cabinet is by copper cable. Unless you are unfortunate and then it could be aluminium. The cabinet now houses the DSL equipment that used to be in the exchange. Between the cabinet and the exchange is a fibre optic connection shared by everyone that is connected at your cabinet.
Hope this helps.

Deleting Wireless Router Connection
I just recently moved my wireless router from a different PC to the PC I have in my room, however, I did not uninstall the linksys connection and such from the other PC, I just moved all the wires and my DSL connection wire to the PC in my room. I had to call Linksys to fix my router connection, so that person set up a new connection and a password, but she did not delete the other connection that the router was first running off of. Somehow that router connection (on the other pc) started to allow connection without a password, even though I did not remove the password, I honestly don't know how it happened. Now I am able to connect to my new password protected connection and my laptop that I use in the room can connect to our old connection which is "unsecured", does anyone know how to delete that connection? I was just going to uninstall the program on the old PC and hope that it will work, but I do not want to waste my time if it doesn't work, and I already called Linksys support and paid $9.99 for someone to log onto my PC to set up my new connection. The old connection is interfering with my new connection, because people are connecting to it, since it does not have a password, someone please help!
This is the 2nd thread I've seen with this same question/issue. I would like to know if CISCO is really hearing what we are saying!!!
The questions is HOW DO YOU DELETE THE OLD install?
The questions is not am I secure?
I have had several IT friends see the same issue but unsure if they have researched the support forums on here to get to the bottom of this. So this is my story...
THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS QUESTION.
I'm having the same issue and have been for several months. It is true what you have stated. Even at my home (now an old network no longer used) that my access point via desktop doesnt show 2 networks. My mobile pc's do!
1 secured (bcse we reinstalled and locked it WPA2)
1 the old install that just "fell off the wagon" unsecured sometime last year.
HOW DO YOU DELETE THE ROUTER IF YOU CAN'T SEE IT?
ignoring that old one, and securing my new is leaving a weak signal for people to use. The kids in my neighborhood sit at the bball courts and use their pc's. When I unplug mine, they leave w/n 10min.
My neighbor tells me today that comcast calls her they see an unsecure linksys (which is my old one). Oddly enough, they are receiving reports that hers (secured network) had been hacked to go to Univ. Studios to dwnload full length movies. SMNT! I cant delete the router from the (once main desktop) PC bcse I dont see it in the list. -

Physical Interface not present in show ip route connected
Hi,
Thanks for reading my post.
I have a reccurent issue with a CISCO881-K9.
My WAN interface is regularly unsuable even if it's UP/UP. I can't even ping the interface from the router itself.
A reboot solves the issue. But now I have time and I'd like to get a proper understanding of what's going on.
The route doesn't appear in "show ip route connected".

WilliamHi,
Thanks for your answer. I've checked the release notes and there is no bug about that.
I think I must use the WAN interface which is fastethernet 4. I'm not able to change the patch cable for now.
What could be the cause?

Belkin wireless router connected but browser could not find the host server
my new roommate has a belkin n wireless router connected to a cable modem which functions perfectly on her pc laptop. i am trying to connect my MacBook Pro to the router using her WEP password. this all works fine and my System Preferences/Network/Status shows that AirPort is connected with full strength, but i cannot load any web pages (i have not yet been able to load any pages at all using this router). the page load error reads "Firefox can't find the server at www.cnn.com" and "The browser could not find the host server for the provided address".
I spoke with Belkin support and they say the router is functioning properly, that is a problem with my mac.
When I go to Network Diagnostics, the status shows all green and says "This computer's Internet connection appears to be operating normally. Are you sure you want to use Network Diagnostics?
Could this be a firewall issue? A couple people have suggested that, but I'm not sure how to fix that.
I have tried rebooting the router and cable modem, rebooting the mac, etc.
any ideas on what settings i may need to investigate??
thank you!

how do I know if the router has useful DNS servers? i am looking at the settings of the router on the pc that is online.
Somewhere in the settings of the router should be the DNS servers that it is using. Since the router is offering via DHCP to do DNS translation for your Mac, it must have useful DNS servers listed.
There are "public" DNS servers. I have no experience with it, but this Web page describes one from Google:
http://code.google.com/speed/public-dns/
Supposedly Google has a DNS server at IP addresses 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 that you might try. Since the DNS server setting on your Mac is grayed out, as a test you might try noting the setting in the "TCP/IP" tab of your AirPort connection item of the Network panel of System Preferences. Then switch from "Using DHCP" to "Manually", fill in the values you just noted, switch to the DNS tab and fill in Google's DNS addresses, and see if things work better.
do you have any other suggestions of where to seek help???

Can't get DNS for laptop on router connected to shared NIC
I have my router connected to my PC on one NIC that is shared. Another NIC connects from the PC to the cable modem. The laptop is able to see and connect to the shared wiresless router but cannot receive a DNS address. No internet browsing. On the same shared wireless connection I have an XBox that can connect and get a DNS response. Also the PC has no trouble connecting to the internet.
It sounds like your network is setup this way:
modem - PC - router )))) laptop

Is this the way your system is set up? If so, why?
Most systems are setup like this:

Internet speed impacted when router connected
I have been keeping a constant check on our internet speed, primarily because our Bell Sympatico service peaks and troughs .. my speed without the router is 5600kbps .. when I connect the router however my speed drops to 2,200 .. why is that .... and can it be fixed .. because before I switched to this router, I had a d-link which recorded the same speed with or without the router connected.
I've been giving Bell grief and have a service ticket out, which I may not need it seem to be the router ?
Router is the WRT320N
Message Edited by steelefamily on 10-06-2009 06:12 AM1) When you said your speed drops to 2200 kbps, I assume you mean your speed when your computer is wired to the router -- is that correct?
2) And I assume by "kbps", you do mean "kilobits per second", not "kilobytes per second" -- is that correct?
3) If the answer to both 1 and 2 is yes, then the first thing to do is simply reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
4) There are several other things that can give you slow speed when wired to the router including:
a) using point-to-point (P2P) software. This is a known cause for router slow downs and disconnections. It can cause problems for several days after use. Stop the P2P.
b) unnecessarily adding a "Domain name" to your router. If your ISP does not require a domain name, erase the domain name from your router.
c) turning on "logging" in the router. Logging is only for diagnostic purposes, otherwise, turn logging off.
d) Sometimes Linksys routers seem to have trouble synching to some very old modems. The solution is to get a new modem.
e) Some computers will slow if you are using a wired and a wireless connection at the same time. Turn off your wireless adapter.
f) Improper setup of modem and/or router --- to fix this, we will need more info:
5) Please state your ISP
6) Please state the make and exact model number of your modem (not the WRT320N).
7) Please do the following test:
Power down your entire network. Using an ethernet cable, connect your modem directly to your computer. (Do not use the WRT320N for this test.) Power up the modem and computer. Verify that you have a working Internet connection, then proceed with the following: (Even if your Internet connection does not work, state this, and proceed.)
Go to "Start" > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt.
A black DOS box will appear. Type in "ipconfig /all" (with no quotes), then hit the Enter key. Copy all the results to your next post. To do the copy, highlight the results, then use the copy (Ctrl-c) keys and the paste (Ctrl-v) keys. If your "IP address" does not start with 192.168 , then for security reasons, erase the last half of your IP address. -

E1200 Router Connecting Dlink DIP-714P+
Dear All,
I am replacing old D-Link DI-714P+ router with E1200.
The old configuration was a printer connecting to D-Link router, and allow for wireless printing.
Therefore, may I know how do I configure E1200 so that I still can print wirelessly, while connected to E1200 network.
Assuming the printer still connected to Dlink router, can we print to E1200 then bridge to Dlink ?
Thank you.
regards,
Chong KKIf you will replace the old router with the E1200 you simply need to configure the router to work with the modem and setup the wireless settings using the CD. If the printer is connected wired to the Dlink router you simply need to disconnect it from the Dlink and connect it to the E1200 router. After doing that the printer should work and you should be able to do wireless printing. However if the printer is wireless capable and you want to connect that wirelessly to the E1200, then you will need to setup the wireless printer to connect to the wireless settings setup for the E1200 router (you can refer to your printer documentation for that).
Now if you will leave the Dlink router connected and if you just want to cascade the E1200 router to it then there is a different configuration for that. Base on my understanding you want to leave the printer connected to the dlink and you would like to connect wirelessly to the E1200 router right? Then you need to connect the E1200's ethernet port (one of the yellow ports) to the Dlinks ethernet port as well. This is called LAN to Lan Connection. To know how to do that then click on the link below:
Cascading (Connecting) a Linksys router to another router
After doing it you can then Configure the wireless settings of the E1200 manually since you cannot setup the router using the CD with LAN to LAN configuration.

Verizon doesn't officially support anything besides the Actiontec router as they install it. They may provide some assistance for setting up client devices such as computers, however they aren't going to give much help with a second router or adding a USB printer to that router. The potential combinations of equipment that people can install is huge, and to expect Verizon to support anything we users might install is quite frankly unreasonable.
Now, that doesn't leave us users without any support options. Here's some ways you can get this working:
Utilize web based forums like this or other sites to learn from and exchange ideas with other users. Use web search engines as well. You may not find exalt what you need, but you'll learn a lot. This is a good approach for a reasonably technical person.
Read the manuals. Learn about networking protocols either by tacking classes or reviewing online course work. In other words, become very knowledge at networking. This builds on the above suggestion. Great for very technical people and will enable you to tackle most any networking problem.
Hire a local support person to configure your network. If you are interested, have them explain what they did so you can learn from it. If you don't care about what they did, don't ask and be prepared to pay them again if you need to change anything.
You've gotten some great pointers from Anti-Phish. It's up to you where you go from here. Just don't expect Verizon to be any help. It's not part of their service.
Good Luck.

WRT54GS router connected, but not detected.
I have my WRT54GS wireless router connected just like the Easylink setup guide told me to. It goes through the steps up to the point that it tells me to verify that certain lights are on. They are, so I click next. Here's my problem. On the next step, the computer attempts to detect the router, but fails. I can still connect to the internet through the router on my wired connection. On my wireless conection to my PS3, it obtains an IP address, but can't connect. On my wireless connection to my other computer, it finds the network, but can't connect.
I called Linksys tech support and was told it had something to do with my modem and I had to call my ISP. I called my ISP and they said it was a problem with the router.
I know none of the hardware is faulty, because it worked when the computers were in opposite positions. That leads me to believe it is some setting on this computer, but I have no idea what it could be.
Can someone help?Access the setup page of the router by launching an
Browser and type on the address bar, 192.168.1.1 and press enter. When
it prompts for the username and password, leave the username field
empty and provide password as "admin" (Without quotes)
click on ok.
On the main setup page the ""Internet Connection Type"" should be
on ""Obtain IP Automatically - DHCP “. Click on the Save Settings
button.
Now click on the sub tab ""MAC address clone"".
- Click on enable
Click Clone & click save settings
Check WAN Ip on Status page of router ....
If getting Valid Ip .... try going online
If not ... power cycle for 4-5 minutes & then again check the WAN Ip address ..... -
Router connection lost after connecting modem
Router: WRT54GX4
Background: My desktop PC had been connected to the internet through my router and DSL modem just fine. But I forgot my router password, so I reset the router.
Situation: Now my PC communicates with the router fine when the modem is NOT connected to the router (I can ping the router, access the router's Utility screens, etc.). Once I connect modem to the router, though, my PC can no longer ping or see the router. My PC will still connect fine to the internet when directly connected to the modem.
Attempted Fixes: I've believe I've tried every combination of turning off/turning on the equipment. For example, while I have a good PC/router connection, I've connected the modem to the router (and lost the router connection). Then I tried starting out with a good PC/router connection, powered off the router, connected the modem, then powered the router back on (and lost the network connection). I've restarted the PC after connecting the modem to the router, et cetera, et cetera. Every scenarion I try ends up with me losing the router connection to the PC.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Message Edited by Mark73Online on 08-26-2007 11:51 AMAfter you reset the router to factory defaults, you need to setup the router again. Use the setup disk that came with the router, or setup the router manually if you prefer. It sounds like your "Intenet Connection Type" is not setup correctly.
Please state your ISP.
Also state the make and model of your modem.
Do you have cable modem, or DSL, or ADSL ?
Did your ISP give you a PPPoE user name and password? -
Easy VPN on 1710 cisco router connected to a DSL using dyndns
I have a 1710 cisco router connected to a DSL modem at home. Dynamic DNS or dyndns is implemented on it and everything works fine. In order words, I do not have a static IP address.
I would like to be able to configure vpn or Easy VPN on it so that I can connect with my laptop from outside using the cisco vpn client software.
Can someone please post a step by step sample vpn configuration? Something that does not conflict with my configuration. Below is my config. Thanks in advance.
