Moving S drive or erasing?

We have a mapped drive here at work that uses s:  and it wont let me move the lenovo s drive to another letter.  Is it possible to move it to another letter or delete it?  I have made all of the backup discs and recovery discs.
I have a t400  2764CTO
Thanks

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
Swapping hard drives might work with G5s prior to the Late 2005 dual-cores, Including quad - but there were several hardware changes in the dual-cores that make it unlikely to work.
Think you will have the opportunity to re-install OS X on the quad and copy over the User data - possibly using Migration Assistant

  • Failed boot after moving hard drive (IDE not SATA)

    Greetings all.
I am attempting to setup a headless box, and in doing so I am installing Arch on one system (Sapphire Axion A3-M275 Motherboard), then moving the hard drive to the new system (SGS1660, a VIA CLE266/VT8235 based headless rack-solution). After moving the drive into the SGS1660, the system fails to boot. Attached output from the Serial Console:

I think what is happening is that the kernel does not have the drivers for the IDE controller on the board for the CLE266/VT8235. Does this seem accurrate? And if so, how can I verify the current kernel config, then compile a kernel with everything else Arch needs to boot properly? I am familiar with the old means of setting up a kernel using the 'make menuconfig; make; make modules_install' etc method.
Thanks for the help in advance!

Hi, not sure if this is still causing you an issue, but I just ran into the same problem.
For me, I have a Sharp PC=MM1110 which has no cd drive and doesn't like to boot from USB. To get Arch installed on it, I had to attach it to another PC (via it's docking cradle, which lets it show up as a USB hard drive), then boot the other PC from an Arch install cd and select the USB hdd for all of the partitioning etc.
When I rebooted after the installation, the Sharp wouldn't boot.
First, I had to edit the grub menu entry to point to (hd0,0), at which point I got the error listed in the first post... Failed to parse block device id's.
If i booted into fallback mode, it booted without a problem.
For me, the solution to finally get it working was to boot into fallback mode, remount the filesystem as r/w, and run mkinitcpio -g filename to rebuild the kernel. Once completed all I had to do was point grub to the new kernel image and it booted ok.
Hope this is useful to someone

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

  • Moving a drive from a NAS200 Question

Im thinking of moving from a NAS200 to one of the newer models with Gigabit. Can I move the drives from the NAS200 to the newer models without having to reformat?
    Jorge
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi Jorge,
Moving a drive from NAS200 to NMH will reformat the drive because they are using a different file system. You should back-up your data first before moving the drive. Check out this linksys article: KB17899 - Swapping Hard Disk Drives between NAS200 and NMH Series Media Hub.
    Hope this helps.

  • Moving XP drive to a new Mac Pro

I have an install of XP via Boot Camp on an old Mac Pro. It exists on it's own hard drive installed in the machine.
I'd like to move it to a new Mac Pro.
Is it as simple as moving the drive to the new machine?
When I run boot camp on the new machine will it recognize the previous install? Or will I need to do a new install?
    Thanks
    Dj

It 'should' work, but XP will see it is on different hardware and require activation or something. And, you always need to boot from XP CD once when moving it to do some system repair from what I heard.
If you want to address 4-8GB RAM; use both cpus, have better multi-core support, I wouldn't even use XP.
So depends on if this is retail or system builder whether you can deactivate and move the license.

At this moment, that's correct. The OS X license included with a Mac can only be used with that Mac. However, in the case the OP has purchased OS X Mountain Lion in the past, this may change

When I work with a drive to boot many computers, I use the newest model computer I will be booting, and set the system up on that, run all the Apple updates. Normally I will have no issue booting any older computer with the same drive. Unless of course those older computers do not support the operating system on that drive.
If you want to test if the drive will boot the mac mini. Put your MacBook Pro into target mode. Connect the two computers together. And on the Mac Mini, go into system preferences and then under start up disk and see if the target disk mode computer's drive shows up there. Seelct that drive and restart. See if it boots ok. A bit easier then taking the drives out and moving things around.

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.

  • Hard drive was erased and was wondering if I will be billed for hitting download on my purchased section of iTunes

My hard drive was erased and i lost all of my itunes.  But then when I got on there was a new section called purchased on the Itunes site that said I was able to download all the songs I had purchased...am I going to get billed again for these?

    No.
This is the newly released icloud, beta version.
You should still always have a backup copy of your computer.

  • Repartition portable hard drive without erasing contents

    Hey all,
So recently I accidentally formatted my portable hard drive but luckily I was able to get my files back thanks to this incredibly useful free software called TestDisk (figured I'd give it a plug lol). Anyway, I don't think I recovered the data properly because now my portable hard drive has only one partition which is in Fat32 format. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knew a way to repartition my hard drive so that I could leave the existing partition but create another one without having to format the whole thing.
    Thanks heaps,
    djnush

How is the drive partitioned currently - GUID or APM? It is possible to create a second partition without completely erasing the drive, but it depends on how the drive is currently partitioned. And, you need to be running 10.5.8 in order to do it on a GUID partitioned drive. However, if the drive is currently partitioned using MBR or APM, then you cannot do it on the fly. You would have to repartition the entire drive thus erasing any data on the drive.

  • What do i do to get my purchases if my hard drive was erased?

can i get my itunes downloads from previous purchases again because my computer's har drive was erased or do i need to buy them again? cause if so then that's bull.

Apple's policy is clear: iTS purchases can be downloaded only once. It is your responsibility to make back-ups .
That being said, at their discretion they have made one-time exceptions to this policy. You can ask for an exception by submitting the form at the bottom of this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/store/backup/
Good Luck! But whatever the response from Apple, remember:
Your music is valuable - please back it up!

  • External Drive "Disk Erase Failed"

    Hi All,
This is my first post to the supportcommunity and want to confirm i have searched around and while i found similar stories to my own, i did not find anything specifically helpful.
Recently i had the bright idea of moving my whole iTunes collection to a WD 500GB USB External Hard drive. The transfer was fine and iTunes was ok with the move of data. I Progressed and plugged the WD Drive in to my Airport Extreme and my Mac Book Pro recognised the drive no problems and again iTunes was able to connect to all my movies, songs etc etc.
I also tested this with my Apple TV 2 and found streaming a breeze in each room.
This morning however i noticed an error on my Apple TV 2 "Your Device does not have any movies" (or something similar), i checked my MBP and noticed the hard drive was no longer mounted nor available under the "Shared" drives list in Finder.
I tried the obvious steps first
    Restart MBP
    Restart APE
Restart MPB & APE after disconnecting WD Drive
Nothing above worked. I opened "Disk Utility", reconnected my WD drive directly and found my drive listed as expected. However if you see the image attached to this post you will see while my MBP recognises the drive, it does not recognise the partition created only a few days ago called "iTunes". Also the Verify Disk & Repair Disk options are not available which is a real bummer.
Finally i tried connecting the drive to a spare windows xp laptop i have, windows will start to install the device drivers which are the usual generic type and confirm the installation was complete, however My Computer does not show any drives attached.
I know i "Erased" the drive before moving my data in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and i did not set any security options.
I can understand Windows not recognising the drive, of course it is not NTFS or FAT32. But for my MBP to see the drive in Disk Utility and not show the partition is strange and frankly worrying.
Litterally every song, movie and TV series i ever purchased via iTunes is on that drive.
My iPhone has my music but im struggling to get that off the phone and back to my MPB, my iPad has a couple of movies but not all.
Finally i fogot to mention i tried to use disk warrior however this didnt recognise any drives other than my MAC HD.
Any help would be amazing thank you very much.

    Hi guys,
Wondering if you can help me out...
I made a time machine copy on a 500gb external hard drive of my 13" MBP with a HDD currently in it.
Then took my 500gb SSD from an old 15" MBP, removed the HDD and put it in my 13" MBP.
Opened up 13" MBP in restore mode. Chose restore from time machine back up.
Choose the time machine external drive as source. Then chose the SSD drive to restore to.
Said it was erasing the drive... Asked for a password...
I typed in my usual password. It then said the SSD drive couldn't be erased.
Took the SSD out and put the original HDD back in.
Plugged the SSD into a firewire 800 caddy to try erase it in disk utility as an external.
This drive will show up in disk utility but the erase option isn't available.
I can repair the disk but it says the disk is perfectly fine.
I can click on the partition option but everything is greyed out and I can't partition it at all.
This drive will now no longer show up on the desktop or finder.
    This is driving me crazy!
Just want to erase the SSD, use time machine to restore onto it and get busy.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Chris

  • Can't mount external drive after erase

I have a 40gb hard drive that I erased and formatted as fat. Specifically, formatted as FAT, 0 data after trying 7pass and getting an error. I want to install the disk on my PC and reinstall XP on it. My problem is that when I did this I got an error (cannot remember type) and now the drive doesn't show up in disk utility, my desktop or my PC anywhere. I don't know where to go from here. I've tried a couple of Partition Managers, both on the Mac and PC with no luck. Also tried Diskpart from the PC terminal with no luck. I'm not very well versed at using terminal on either machine but it looks like I'll have to resort to it to solve my problem. I have an IBook running OSX10.58. My PC is a Dell 2400, Win XP sp3. Help of any kind appreciated.
    Al

Problem solved. I moved the jumper pin from Cable Select to Master. I formatted it in windows ntfs. Don't care about the data. I'm going to do a fresh install of XP sp3.
    Thanks,
    Al

  • Moving TM drive

I am currently using a 2TB drive in an external SATA 3 enclosure as a Time Machine disk for my Mac Pro 10.6.8. The disk has two partitions, one to back up my 250GB SSD startup drive and one to back up my 500GB data drive. Since my Mac Pro sometimes loses connection with the eSATA enclosure I have decided to remove that partitioned Time Machine drive into the Mac Pro's remaining free internal drive bay. So far I have Time Machine backing up only my boot disk to the TM drive but I plan on having it back up my Data disk on the backup drive's other (presently clean) partition once I relocate the drive into my Mac Pro. Two questions: 1) Will Time Machine recognize the transplanted drive and it's existing Time Machine file right off the bat? 2) In 10.6.8 can I have Time Machine back up two internal drives separately to two partitions on an internal Time Machine drive?
Thanks in advance for any insights.

    BIGDADDY30,
You can connect the Time Machine drive to your Mac Pro just fine. It doesn't need to be erased first, and there may be several reasons why you wouldn't want to erase it, at least for a while.
You mention that you purchased the Mac Pro "recently." I assume that this means you are currently using it, and any files from your Powerbook that you might want or need have been transferred over. Correct? In other words, there is no reason to continue storing the files contained in the (old) Time Machine backup. Correct?
You can use the external drive for Time Machine on the Mac Pro, and in fact you will be asked if you want to use it that way the first time you connect it. However, it must be erased, and further, repartitioned in order to use it with Time Machine on the Mac Pro.
You see, Time Machine on a PPC (G4) Mac must have a backup drive that uses the "Apple Partition Map," while Time Machine on an Intel Mac needs one with the "GUID" partition map.
When you connect it to your Mac Pro, dismiss the option to use it immediately for TIme Machine. Open DIsk Utility, select the drive in the list on the left select the drive, not the named volume that will appear indented below), then click the "Partition" tab. Choose a single partition, set the format for that one partition to "Mac OS Extended (journaled)," then click the "Options..." button. You'll want to choose the "GUID" partition map here. Confirm your choice, then click "Apply."
You can then choose the drive for Time Machine's use.

  • Can I Re-install 10.6 on iMac hard drive without erasing drive?

My OSX based spell check for mail, text edit, and other programs that use the system spell check no longer have any spell or grammer check functions.  I have isolated it to know it's the OS spell checking function, so now want to re-install my system.  I have found the original system disks, and want to know if I have to wipe my entire hard drive in order erase and then install just the system?  I have a Synchronize generated bootable backup of my entire hard drive, but then it will install the current system probably including whatever problems the system software has now.  I suppose I can make another back up that is not the bootable kind, but I would really like to not lose all my settings on everything.
    Any suggestions?

Installing an OS will not erase user data.  With that said a backup is always wise to have.  Use your original disks and then update to 10.6.8.
    Ciao.
