Moving SCSM VMs

Hi,
My SCSM 2012 SP1 setup lives on three 2008 R2 Hyper-V VMs, Manager, Datawarehouse and Web portal, all SQL databases live on a separate physical server.
I want to do the basic Hyper-V export/import of the Manager and Data Warehouse servers (Web portal wont be moved) from one 2008 R2 Hyper-V server host to another 2008 R2 Hyper-V server host, obviously I will configure the same fixed IP addresses after the
import on the VMs. But do I need to take any other actions, or any other concerns?
Will the new hyper-V VM MAC address be a problem for SCSM?
Do I need to action the SPN records somehow?
Will the SQL and Web Portal servers have issues communicating with the moved Manager and Data Warehouse VMs after the move?
I am not concerned about the downtime during the export/import process, only the functionality once that is complete. Can I expect any sort of issues and if so, how do I resolve them?
Thanks.

Hey
You should be able to move the VMs to the new Virtulization Hosts without any issues or manual configuration steps.
Cheers

  • Moving Service Manager Database From SQL 2008 R2 SP2 to SQL 2012 SP1

    Hi Guys,
Just looking for some clarification about moving our Service Manager 2012 R2 database to a new SQL Server.
Our Service Manager database is currently on a remote SQL server, shared with other databases, running SQL 2008 R2 SP2. It was originally setup this way as we only deployed Change Management but we are now wanting to deploy everything, fully
utilising SCSM/Orchestrator and Cireson's suite. Due to the limited resources available on that SQL server we are seeing performance issues before even getting it all up and running.
I want to move the Service Manager database to a new dedicated SQL server running SQL 2012 SP1. I am aware of the official DB move procedure but it does not specifically mention moving up SQL versions. I have seen some comments around here that
it is fine to do but some feedback would be good, it is not something I have done before.
All servers in this are fully patched Windows 2008 R2. Also, we do not currently have a Data Warehouse so do not need to worry about that. It was dropped and uninstalled before upgrading to Service Manager 2012 R2 and will be reinstalled after this DB move
using a separate dedicated SQL server.
    Thanks, Chris.

As long as your collations and permissions are the same as before it
should not be a problem. That sad i could not find any other documentation saying it's not supported.
I have moved SCSM databases between different SQL-versions before and it has worked fine if the collations etc are correct.

  • How can I move VMs across data centers without changing their IP addresses?

This document is old, but I think will help you:
    http://www.sonicwall.com/downloads/VPN_with_Overlapping_Networks.pdf

    Hi All,
We have many applications that have been developed that do not use DNS but rather static IP addresses to communicate. Moving the VMs that these applications run on to a different subnet would be a huge project. I’m looking for a service that will allow me to move VMs between sites without the need of changing their IP addresses. I’m also looking to do this without spending very much. Cisco OTV and layer 2 circuits with various ISPs will do what I need, but they can be expensive and will add complexity. I’ve also read about Aryaka and Pertino but I’m not sure if they’ll do what I want.
Is there another option that I’m missing?

  • Hyper-V Server 2012 Migration Questions

    Hello All,
This is my first post here, but I have used these forums many times for information. Sorry in advance for the long post.
I have a few questions regarding migration to Hyper-V server 2012 for my production environment. I have done quite a bit of reading, but I have a few direct questions and I would like to get some direct answers.
My current production environment consists of one PowerEdge 2900 with 2 Xeon X5460 Quad Core 3.16GHz CPUs, 24 GB of RAM and a RAID 10 consisting of 8, 500 GB HDDs for a total of 2TB of storage. I am currently running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise w/ GUI as the
Hyper-V host OS. I have 4 virtual machines all also running Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. The 4 virtual machines consist of 1 domain controller, 1 Exchange Server with Exchange 2010 Standard, 1 Server running SharePoint 2010 Enterprise and the remaining server
running IIS with FTP and HTTP.
The network topology is as follows….
Hopefully it is clear from my diagram that the Hyper-V host OS is connected to the same physical network as the domain, but is not a joined to the domain. I set it up this way because I had concerns about connectivity and manageability because the domain
controller is a guest VM. Also, the IIS server is on a completely different physical network independent of the domain.
What I would like to accomplish is the migration of the above environment to Hyper-V Server 2012 as is. I want to keep my existing guest VMs unchanged and running Server 2008 R2 for now as well as keep the existing network topology intact.
I have 3 additional servers in a separate test environment that would be able to serve as temporary storage or whatever is needed for the migration process.
Here are the two main things I would like to accomplish with this migration…
    1. Make the transition from Server 2008 R2 to Hyper-V Server 2012 as a host OS.
    2. Migrate virtual hard disks from .VHD to the new .VHDX format.
All that being said, I have finally come to my questions regarding this process.
First and foremost, I would obviously need to back up my current setup in case something goes horribly wrong during the migration. My question regarding the initial backup is would it be better to do a bare metal backup of the Hyper-V host or should I do
individual backups (bare-metal?) of the Guest VMs from within their operating systems?
Second, since I plan to use Hyper-V Server 2012, I will have to manage the host OS using the RSAT from a domain joined client running Windows 7 Professional. How much of a pain is it going to be to setup RSAT and manage the non-domain joined host from a
domain joined client? Is there a better way without using SCVMM or using Server 2012 w/ a GUI as the host OS?
Third, are there any concerns I should have, precautions I should take or procedures I need to do before, during or after the migration regarding the existing VMs and the new virtualized hardware environment on the same physical host?
Forth, should I use the trial version of SCVMM 2012 SP1 (or another previous version) to perform the migration? What should I be aware of using SCVMM for the migration and then discontinuing its use after the migration is complete and moving to management
    using the RSAT?
Fifth, if I don’t use SCVMM for the migration, what is the best procedure for moving the VMs? Should I just copy the VHDs to a temporary storage location, install Hyper-V server 2012, copy the VHDs back, create new VMs and attach the VHDs or should I use
    the export/import process?
Number six, when is the best time to migrate the VHDs to VHDX format and what would be the best method?
And finally, do I need to worry about USN rollback with a single domain controller? From my reading, this seems to be a point of disagreement. Some people say it could happen while others say it won’t. Is there any point during the migration process where
it could occur either during the copying of VHDs or from the switch to VHDX?
Again, sorry for the long post and thanks for staying with me this far. Any information would be much appreciated

    1) As Jens said below with Windows Server 2012 you can simple copy the configuration files and VHDs from a 2008 R2 server to a 2012 server and import them - they one caveat to this is that any vlan configuration is lost and you have to simply re-create it.
Optionally you can also export the virtual machines from Windows Server 2008 R2 and then import them on Windows Server 2012.
    2) Remote management in a workgroup does have some caveat's associated with it - take a look at
http://blogs.technet.com/b/jhoward/archive/2009/08/07/hvremote-refresh.aspx.  Generally I would recommend joining the Hyper-V management operating system to the domain - not just because of these issues but for a number of other features to work properly
    (see below)
    3) I always recommend validating the hardware and environment after the installation before migrating critical workloads to it - testing networking, backup etc... to make sure they function as expected.  Also ensure that you upgrade the integration
components in the VM's after the migration.
    4) That is an option - though you might find you like SCVMM
    5) Recreating VM's using existing VHD's has some issues for example the BIOS GUID changes, all of the NIC's are re-plug and played etc... When possible copying the configuration or using export is much better.
    6) The sooner the better - VHDx has a number of significant advantages, you can do the migration using the Hyper-V manager UI (edit disk) or via powershell with Convert-VHD.  Do keep in mind that during the conversation you need 2x the space (for the
    original and the new VHDx).
    7) In the past you could get into trouble if you for example snapshotted an AD virtual machine and than reverted it - taking one offline and then brining it back online was never a problem.  In Windows Server 2012 we addressed this with a feature called
    generation ID's.
Domain considerations...  A few things to keep in mind regarding the choice to not domain join the Hyper-V server.
    - You can't live migrate virtual machines
    - You can't utilize Hyper-V over SMB
    - Management is more difficult and less secure

  • Best back up software and hardware requirement for the same

    Good morning to all,
I would like to know about back solutions. We are a small organization around 60 employees, currently we have windows server 2008 r2 and using symantec backup exc and we back up on external USB drives. Management not happy with Symantec
We plan to upgrade our servers , and moving to VMs  and plan to implement network storage.
So we want a back up solution which could back up VMs ,Shared folder and other required data.
What are the best practice and solutions for backups.

    Nopes :)
It depends on you. I've been using Symantec from many years now ;)

  • Many warnings : prevented from using mac address because it is pinned to port

    Hi
I am seeing my system log flooded (several per second) with event 28 warnings such as :
Port 'SWITCHPORT-SM-DB9DCFC7-E98D-438C-8998-CC0D9C14ED2B-1-1' was prevented from using MAC address '00-15-5D-00-B2-05' because it is pinned to port 'A0724966-695B-4552-B'.
    Source : VMSMP
The environment is 2 X hyper-v 2008 r2 hosts. both have 4 NICs, 3 nics are connected to virtual switches and management OS is not allowed to share the network adapter, and then 1 NIC is obviously used by the host/mgmt OS and no virtual switch connected to
it. I am seeing the warnings on both hosts.
No load balancing or NIC teaming.
All VM's have their MAC addresses assigned dynamically and I cannot see any conflicting MAC addresses.
The warnings are logged for all or most of the MAC addresses and alternate between different "SWITCHPORT-SM-etc,etc" names.
Performance doesn't seem to be degraded, I've run continuous pings for more than an hour with no packet loss, just a single packet spike every now and then. Network access seems fine, Backup Exec 2012 jobs are succeeding, albeit somewhat slower than what
    it was.
I don't know when it started, since these warnings have flooded out all else.
At first I thought it had something to do with a VM that I moved from one host to the other, where I copied the VHD accross and then created a new VM and assigned the original IP address to the new virtual NIC in the new VM. I then uninstalled the old hidden
NIC and restarted the VM in question, but that didn't stop the warnings.
Any ideas what could be causing this, or any tips on where I should start looking to isolate the cause ?

Got it fixed by creating new virtual switches, moving all VMs over to them, and afterwards deleting all the old virtual switches.
Still no idea what the cause could have been. How bizarre...

  • Horrible performance due to disk writes

Whenever there is a high volume of disk writes in the internal SATA2 drive, everything comes to a crawl, and most programs are barely responsive. If I run the same tasks but work from an external USB drive, there is zero negative impact on system performance! (SMART status is Verified)
I have trouble believing that this should be expected behaviour; basically, whenever I am downloading several files at the same time, it takes the whole system hostage, even though the CPUs are at least 90% idle.
What could be going so wrong?

(oh, good, just noticed it was a reference to a USB stick, which is not what I was using.)
Say I'm downloading 5 OS distro DVD torrents, all at the same time, each anywhere from 600 MB to a few GBs, so for the next hour or so, there will be non-stop writing to the disk as torrents' "parts" are downloaded and saved. after a few minutes there will be plenty of connections opened, and lots of activity, and, next thing you know, most other applications will stop responding. oddly, the only application that still responds well is uTorrent itself.
Most times when I need to get updates and the like, I launch it all and go do something else, but instead one time I continued surfing the web, and was having a lot of delays, so I started wondering if it was a bit much on the network side (Cable ISP), but it wasn't. Then I tried to watch a video, and that was a nightmare all together.
I have a habit of running other OSes under VMWare Fusion, and I'd noticed a similar performance problem when I'd run defrag on the VM guests, which I'd accepted as normal in that case, but it caused me to try and use an external USB (magnetic) drive as the target of the torrents, to see if there would be a difference, and boy was there one! I even moved my VMs to the external drive, and running defrag on those no longer caused delays. So, this makes me wonder if there's something wrong with either (perhaps) the internal drive, or the BUS, or something.
Just in case I'm still not being clear:
I use uTorennt to download 7 torrents of 700 MB each, on the internal drive, and watch any other task crawl. However, do the same thing, while saving to an external drive, and everything is fine.
I hope I'm making more sense (and thanks for the interest).

  • Virtual Iron Migration Path

I noticed that there is not way to migrate the OVM 2.x to OVM3, but what about Virtual Iron. I am using raw storage on a san. Can I create a VM in OVM3 and use the boot volumes I already have on my san? Can OVM manager and its nodes co-exist on the same management vlan as Virtual Iron? Virtual Iron's management and the moving of VMs happened on the same VLAN......
    Thanks in advance...

The Manager and Servers can happily co-exist on the same management VLAN or on different VLANs, there is no requirement for either. You can even specify dedicated Live Migration, Storage and Cluster networks via the Oracle VM Management UI.

  • C210 ESXI Port Group

    Hi,
I had an issue where traffic on one of my ESXI port groups stopped passing traffic.
Port Group name :UCM  vnic 1&2         -     Catalyst 4500     Etherchannel     Mode on, access vlan 100
Port Group name :Unity/Uccx vnic 3&4 -     Catalyst 4500     Etherchannel     Mode on, access vlan 100
My setup was in my UC environment was configured with 2 x vNics for my UCM VMs and 2 x vNics for my Unity/IUCCX VMs.
I am not trunking over the Etherchanels, and  my Cisco switches are configured with mode on, and are access ports in Vlan 100.
Traffic stopped passing over Port Group Unity/UCCX and I was unable to access the VMs from the switch side of the network. As all VMs are in the same vlan, I moved my Unity and UCCX VMs into Port Group UCM and then they were reachable from the network. Only Port Group Unity/Uccx had failed.
The only way I could resolve the issue was to power down all VMs and reboot the C210 server.
They had been operational for a period of time before the fault appeared. Any ideas why this may have happed or how to resolve without a complete server reboot would be appreciated.
    thanks
    Ian.

    Ian,
I would suggest you to open a TAC service request with following information
    ESXi logs ( vm-support command output )
    CIMC show tech
    Upstream Switch show tech
Approx date & time of the problem event
So it worked when we moved the VMs to other port group on the vSwitch, right ?
We need to look into VMware messages log file for this event.

  • Unexpected reboot hyper-v

I have a w2k8r2 server that runs hyper-v and hosts about 12 guests.  Lately the server justs reboots and doesn't place the guests back into the sate that they were.  There is nothing in the event log that says why nor any dump files.  It
is a fairly new Dell R510 and i have run the diagnostics on it and sent them to Dell and nothing is reported in the hardware logs.  Does anybody know of other thigns i can look at?  i am spending the weekend moving the VMs off of the box and planning
on a complete reinstall of the OS but to me it sounds more like a hardware issue.  Thanks

Agree, sounds like hardware, unless you recently installed something, like a new device driver.  But an error in that would generally write something to the event log.  Actually, even a power fail should be writing something.
"doesn't place the guests back into the sate that they were"
Obviously, if the host goes down, the best you can hope for from the VMs is that they will automatically restart when the host comes back up.  This is actually a setting on each VM.  You can specify the VM to always boot, no matter what state it
was in when the host went down or to come back in the same state.  By state, Hyper-V means running or off or paused.

  • Error 12700 when refreshing a VM properties

I'm in process of rebuilding our entire virtualization infrastructure and creation a new Hyper-V cluster. Currently our virtualization servers run Windows Server 2012 DC. The new OS should be Windows Server 2012 R2 DC. In addition, I'm trying to implement
a full-fledged SC VMM 2012 R2 management solution. The physical servers in question are Cisco USC 200 M3 blades with network adapters supporting several interesting technologies like VM-FEX (a proprietary Cisco solution related to the SR-IOV technology).
In particular, all the VMs on the existing hosts use VM-FEX virtual adapters to connect to the network. Unfortunately, this technology is not supported on Windows Server 2012 R2 (thanks to Cisco developers), so moving the VMs to updated hosts requires preliminary
replacement of the old virtual NICs with new ones that don't use this technology.
I've created a new Win2012R2/Hyper-V cluster (presently containing only one node) and connected it to my VMM server. I live-migrated several VMs from an old host to the new one using the Hyper-V Management Console (VMM refused to do it). I've discovered
that after migration VMM doesn't show their NICs in the VM hardware list (this part of VM inventory is completely empty as if there is no NICs at all). Any attempt to refresh configuration of those migrated VMs fails with the following error message:
    Error (12700)
VMM cannot complete the host operation on the XXX server because of the error: The operation failed.
    Unknown error (0x800b)
    Recommended Action
Resolve the host issue and then try the operation again.
In the same time an attempt to refresh another VM running on this host which was created using the Failover Cluster Management GUI is always successful. The host server and Hyper-V cluster are also refreshed with no errors. So this problem is related
to the VMs, not to the host.
VMs running on the old server are extremely important, so I can't risk them having any problems in the future. Any ideas how to resolve this problem?
    Evgeniy Lotosh
    MSCE: Server infractructire, MCSE: Messaging

Well, I've discovered a way to solve this issue.
The VMs in question were live-migrated to the new virtualization host and immediately after that made highly available by creating a corresponding cluster resource. Removing their cluster resources (but keeping the VM themselves running) got rid of the error
during VM refresh. However, their NICs were still missing in the VMs properties in the VMM console. They appeared after I
shut down those VMs and refreshed them again in the VMM console.
Seems that it's somehow related to the live migration process. It might be, for example, a bug in Hyper-C tools which lose the old vNIC in the VM on the old host and can't switch to the new one (on the new host) on the run. Or it's just a bug in
VMM. So the correct procedure for live-migrating VMs from between hosts
must include a VM properties refresh immediately after it has been transferred to the new host and
before it's made a cluster resource.

  • Moving VMs from Standalone Hyper-V to Hyper-v Failover Cluster

Hello All.................I need to move Virtual Machines from Standalone Hyper-V based on Windows Server 2012 R2 to a Hyper-V Failover Cluster based on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    -  The VMs OS is Windows Server 2012 R2
    -  Applications installed on VMs are SCCM, SCOM, SharePoint, etc.
    1.  I am looking for a Checklist that I can run through and move them.  To make sure I do not miss out anything.
    2.  Would a downtime be required in this scenario while the VM is being moved?
    3.  What requires special attention in this scenario?

    Thanks for the reply.
So, I do not need to do anything and just simply add both the cluster and standalone into VMM and then simply use the Move option.  Please, confirm if I have understood it correct.
Yes. But be carefull. First shut down your VM's
if possible and configure them in such a way they don't automatically start. If you install the SCVMM Agent, some Hyper-V related services are restarted, when some VMs start during that process you system may stall. I have seen this multipe times.
There is another dirty option that worked of us perfectly. Export the VMs. Then import those VMs to a local disk on one Hyper-V Server. Refresh the Hyper-V Server and Virtual Machines on that Hyper-V Server. Give it a few minutes. Then do
a Live Migration while at the same time makeing it "Highly Available" by moving it to your CSV. Works flawlessly. DO NOT IMPORT THE VMS TO YOUR CSV, otherwise you can't change it to "Highly Avaiable" unless you have
two CSVs. Importing it straight to a CSV does not make them Highly Available.

I want to move all my VMs (around 20)  to SERVER2 also running Hyper-v 2012 R2

    1) should I just click on "MOVE" on SERVER1 to move to SERVER2?
    2) Should I do an export and then import
    3) should I setup replication from Server1 to Server2 and then do a failover?
    4) or should I shut the VM down, copy the VHDX file and then create a new VM and use that VHDX
I just want to be cautious and use the best method to ensure it goes smooth and not worry about any corruption. Can anyone offer some advice?

It all depends on your environment and your current Hyper-V configuration.
I asume both servers are domain-member of the same domain and don't use SCVMM. If so, then make sure you do the following:
First enable the "Live Migration" feature in the Hyper-V settings on both Hyper-V Servers.
Make sure both Hyper-V Servers have a vSwitch configured with the same display name and connectivity. They must be somewhat identical, but not everything. As long as the connectivity is the same.
Make sure you have a location to store the VM files on SERVER2.
Then do a Live Migration from SERVER1 to SERVER2, follow the wizard. By using the Hyper-V Manager console on SERVER1.
NOTE1: Without computer certificates and Kerberos configuration on your Live Migration settings you cannot initiate a Live Migration from the Hyper-V Manager cconsole on SERVER2. With the default configuration, you have to login on (or connect
to) SERVER1 en then initiate the Live Migration.
NOTE2: If you can't configure the vSwitches the same. Then you have to shut down the VMs and do a Quick Migration. Then re-configure the VM network properties and power on the VMs.
I hope this information will help you goin on. If you need more detailed information use the following link:

    Guys,
We've got an Oracle VM Server 3.1.1 and Oracle VM Manager 3.1.1. We're having two repositories, which are presented to the OVM Server. let's name them repo1 and repo2 for ease of communication.
We're facing space related issue on the OVM Server, because it's showing one of the repository as 99% utilized. We deleted VMs/templates and clones from the repo1 and even tried to move the same stuff to repo2, but the changes are not getting reflected in the space usage % of the repo1 after the same is refreshed.

  • SCSM 2012 R2: Error in DW server after moving workflows to new server

    Hi
We have installed a new management server and moved to workflows to the new server, and all looks like it works ok. Then we have followed this to remove the old managment server:
    http://marcelzehner.ch/2012/08/01/dealing-with-multiple-management-servers-33-decommission-old-management-servers/
tBut in the data warehouse Operations Managerlog we see: Error 33546 MP Sync failed to connect to Data Access on the machine <name of old managment server>.
Someone know how to fix this?
    Please advice
    jon

    Hi,
You may refer to the below links to unregister the DW by using command Unregister-SCDWSource:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh541728(v=sc.20).aspx
In addition, here is a blog to troubleshoot data warehouse issue:
