Moving shared storage repository between server pools

Is there a way to move a fiberchannel storage repository between server pools? The documentation says its possible only with NFS, but we are moving to new server pool and for this we need to be able to take a loaded SR and remove it from one server pool and discover and use it on another pool?

Exactly how are you trying to do this. Are you choosing to clone and then running the clone customizer to map your storage and vnics?

  • Disk replication for Shared Storage in Weblogic server

    Hi,
Why we need a disk replication in web-logic server for shared storage systems? What is the advantage of it and how this disk replication can be achieved in web-logic for the shared storage which contains the common configurations and software's which will be used by a pool of client machines? Please clarify.
    Thanks.

    Hi,
I am not the middleware expert. However ACFS (Oracle Cloud File System) is a clustering filesystem, which also has the functionality for replication:

  • How to Create Shared Storage using VM-Server 2.1 Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

    Thanks in advance.
Describe in sequence how to create shared storage for a two guest/node Red Hat Linux Enterprise using Oracle 2.1 VM Server on Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5 using command line or appropriate interface.
How to create Shared Storage using Oracle 2.1 VM Server?
How to configure Network for two node cluster (oracle clusterware)?

    Hi Suresh Kumar,
Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2, Patch Set 3 (10.1.2.3) is required to be fully certified on OEL 5.x or RHEL 5.x.
Oracle Application Server 10g Release 2 10.1.2.0.0 or 10.1.2.0.1 versions are not supported with Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) 5.0 or Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.0. It is recommended that version 10.1.2.0.2 be obtained and installed.
Which implies Oracle AS 10.1.2.x is some what certified on RHEL 5.x
I think it would be better if you get in touch with Oracle Support regarding this .
Sorry , I am not aware of any document on migration from Sun Solaris to RH Linux 5.2 .
    Thanks,

  • OVM 3.0.3: Create new Server Pool but keep storage repositories?

    Hi,
I think I have somewhat messed up my Server pool a bit, such as that there are some kind of network bridges in the server pool which I cannot get rid of, since OVMM insists that these have vnics associated to them, when none of my VMs had any nic configured.
So, I guess my only option is to re-create the server pool entirely and migrating VMs between server pools doesn't seem to be possible. I was wondering, I if could at least keep the storage repositories and get away with only creating a new server pool and adding the VM servers to the new pool, but keeping the VM files in the repositories. This will likely make this transition much more smooth, than having to copy all the VMs from the repositories onto a temporary storage and back into the new storage repositories.
    Cheers,

Check the network configuration of the templates installed into your repositories and change the bridges to real/proper ones. Once you've done that, you'll be able to delete the unusued bridges.

It's possible to change this, but you need to contact Oracle Support to do so. I'd recommend first trying to unmap the existing bridges as described above.

  • Creating VMs on single DL360 server with no shared storage

    Hi,
I would like to create 3 VMs on a DL360 using internal disks only. I am using Oracle VM 3.0.2.
Before I start I was trying to understand the online docs -
Can someone give me the benefit of their experiance and tell me if my following assumptions are true?
    1. I still need to create a server pool even though I will not be using any HA features.
    2. One entire disk is needed for VM server installation - so I cannot use this disk as 'local storage' for the server pool.
Point 2 above I am not sure about... I would like to mirror the internal disks and I cannot afford to lose a full disk for the VM server installation.
    Any help much appreciated!
    Rgds
    Trevor

    1. I still need to create a server pool even though I will not be using any HA features.Correct. You would create a non-clustered server pool for the single server.
    2. One entire disk is needed for VM server installation - so I cannot use this disk as 'local storage' for the server pool.Correct. Any disk that is partitioned for the installation is not usable for server pool storage. You would need additional disks. If you wanted to mirror the internal disks, you would need to be able to present two mirrored logical disks to the operating system, if that's possible. I haven't played with a DL360, so I'm not sure what the onboard RAID controller is capable of.

Please let me know if anyone has any suggestions.
    Thanks

Seems like there's already an OCFS2 fs on that LUN. Could it be, that you tried to create a server pool on that LUN before, or that this target has been used to host some other OVM repository? If that is the case, then you need to wipe the LUN, before you can create a new OVM repository or server pool for that matter on it.
But please… double check that this LUN isn't in use anywhere else, since you could loose data, if you'd wipe it!

  • Vmware shared storage

    Hello,
I have downloaded the Oracle/VMWare/SuSE and have exercised the databases, etc. However, I would now like to take this to the next step and create a 'sibling' virtual machine - which I would just make as a copy of the first and have the instances O10G1 and O10G2 on each of the two virtual machines, respectively. Finally, I would then like to create a shared storage device between the two virtual machines. I have had great difficulty doing this and have found disagreement on other forums whether this is even possible with vmware 4.5. The most promising post I found: ( http://www.vmware.com/community/thread.jspa?forumID=19&threadID=11257&messageID=109257#109257 ) references a document from Oracle Japan ( http://otndnld.oracle.co.jp/products/database/oracle10g/pdf/RAC_Config_VMWareLinux.pdf ). Is this document also on the Oracle USA site? It seems to have the answers I am seeking. If not, can you offer any guidance?
    Thanks!

The kit provided is not ment to be used in this way, your request for help is outside the scope of this forum.
It's a bit complicated to do what you want. I would simply suggest you use NFS or iscsi on external storage that would eliminate any VMware issues with shared storage.
    good luck.

Also, make sure you have an admin server configured for that san and that your Oracle VM servers are in the default access group.

  • Represent existing Storage Repository to new server pool?

I have a testing delima.. We have a block-storage SR that was in use on Server Pool A, but want to move it to Server Pool B. I dont see any way in the GUI to facilitate moving a SR (OCFS2) to a new Server pool.
I know I can probably destroy, delete, unpresent and rebuild an empty SR on the new server pool but I dont see why moving it wouldnt be an option
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Dave

Forgot to clarify, we already represented the block storage to the new servers in Pool B, and they see them just fine.. The GUI simply doesnt show the new servers in Pool B in the "present storage repo" dialog.

  • Server Pool WITHOUT shared storage

  • Moving Server Pool Storage/Image to another location

I have a server pool that is using an NFS mount as the 12G of cluster storage at 192.168.0.5. This server pool has 1 Oracle VM server with 2 VM guests that I simply can not loose.
I need to move that to NFS mount to another server at 192.168.0.31
I know I can simply create another server pool, but once I do that, I believe I need another Oracle VM server (which I do not have).
Or can you move the entire Oracle server along with the VMs to the other pool seemlessly?
What is the best way to go here?

This is my environment right now.
One Physical Host with a 3 TB internal SATA drive. Oracle VM server 3.0.1 installed.
Another Host with RHEL 5.5 on it where I installed Oracle VM Manager 3.0, on this RHEL 5.5 host, I also created an NFS export (192.168.0.5 with about 30G possible of space).
Created a Server Pool with cluster storage of the NFS mount above.
Discovered the OVM Server, and added it to the Server pool.
Created a repository on the 3 TB drive in that server that was detected by OVM manager. Created a few virtual disks.
    Created a few VNICs.
Created 2 virtual machines using 3 different virtual disks that are attached to the one VM server. All working as expected so far.
Now I want to move the NFS cluster storage to a new host. (192.168.0.31 - that does not get rebooted as much)
Created a new server pool using the new cluster storage.
I have taken down both VM guests, and migrated them to the "unassigned Virtual Machines" folder.
The large 3TB repo, I un-presented to the Oracle VM server.
I then tried to remove the VM server from the server pool, and receive this

  • VM auto start in a single server pool with only local hard disk repository

I searched the forum but can't find anything similar.
Basically, part of the dev environment I have is just starting to use Oracle VM to have a nice centralized place to manage the VMs and managed server.
Those environment doesn't have shared storage and all VMs are stored under local hard disk. (as just having several VMs to share the resource in a single server)
So there is only one server in the server pool.
What should be the best way to set up VM auto-start when this single server is rebooting or start from boot up?
    Should I just set up a symlink of /OVS/running_pool/vm1/vm.cfg to /etc/xen/auto/vm1.cfg ?
(p.s. I can't set up HA mode in the single server pool since this is ocfs2.local, it will fail)
    Thx in advance.

After some testing, I'm now using a traditional way (for single server with local repository)
auto start VM in dom0 during server starts up:
    ln -s /OVS/running_pool/vmname/vm.cfg /etc/xen/auto/vmname
auto shutdown VM in dom0 during server shut down:
    - edit /etc/sysconfig/xendomains
    change the line:
    XENDOMAINS_SAVE=/var/lib/xen/save
    to
    XENDOMAINS_SAVE=
I also change XENDOMAINS_RESTORE from true to false
Now when I need to reboot/power down the server via OVM, I can just go ahead and do it without migrating..and xendomains will shutdown all my VMs and start them up next time.

  • DFSr supported cluster configurations - replication between shared storage

I have a very specific configuration for DFSr that appears to be suffering severe performance issues when hosted on a cluster, as part of a DFS replication group.
    My configuration:
3 Physical machines (blades) within a physical quadrant.
3 Physical machines (blades) hosted within a separate physical quadrant
Both quadrants are extremely well connected, local, 10GBit/s fibre.
There is local storage in each quadrant, no storage replication takes place.
The 3 machines in the first quadrant are MS clustered with shared storage LUNs on a 3PAR filer.
The 3 machines in the second quadrant are also clustered with shared storage, but on a separate 3PAR device.
8 shared LUNs are presented to the cluster in the first quadrant, and an identical storage layout is connected in the second quadrant. Each LUN has an associated HAFS application associated with it which can fail-over onto any machine in the local cluster.
DFS replication groups have been set up for each LUN and data is replicated from an "Active" cluster node entry point, to a "Passive" cluster node that provides no entry point to the data via DFSn and a Read-Only copy on it's shared cluster
    storage.
For the sake of argument, assume that all HAFS application instances in the first quadrant are "Active" in a read/write configuration, and all "Passive" instances of the HAFS applications in the other quadrants are Read-Only.
    This guide: http://blogs.technet.com/b/filecab/archive/2009/06/29/deploying-dfs-replication-on-a-windows-failover-cluster-part-i.aspx defines
how to add a clustered service to a replication group. It clearly shows using "Shared storage" for the cluster, which is common sense otherwise there effectively is no application fail-over possible and removes the entire point of using a resilient
    cluster.
This article: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc773238(v=ws.10).aspx#BKMK_061 defines the following:
DFS Replication in Windows Server 2012 and Windows Server 2008 R2 includes the ability to add a failover cluster
as a member of a replication group. The DFS Replication service on versions of Windows prior to Windows Server 2008 R2
is not designed to coordinate with a failover cluster, and the service will not fail over to another node.
It then goes on to state, quite incredibly: DFS Replication does not support replicating files on Cluster Shared Volumes.
Stating quite simply that DFSr does not support Cluster Shared Volumes makes absolutely no sense at all after stating clusters
are supported in replication groups and a technet guide is provided to setup and configure this configuration. What possible use is a clustered HAFS solution that has no shared storage between the clustered nodes - none at all.
My question:  I need some clarification, is the text meant to read "between" Clustered
    Shared Volumes?
The storage configuration must to be shared in order to form a clustered service in the first place. What
we am seeing from experience is a serious degradation of
performance when attempting to replicate / write data between two clusters running a HAFS configuration, in a DFS replication group.
If for instance, as a test, local / logical storage is mounted to a physical machine the performance of a DFS replication group between the unshared, logical storage on the physical nodes is approaching 15k small files per minute on initial write and even high
for file amendments. When replicating between two nodes in a cluster, with shared clustered storage the solution manages a weak 2,500 files per minute on initial write and only 260 files per minute when attempting to update data / amend files.
By testing various configurations we have effectively ruled out the SAN, the storage, drivers, firmware, DFSr configuration, replication group configuration - the only factor left that makes any difference is replicating from shared clustered storage, to another
    shared clustered storage LUN.
    So in summary:
Logical Volume ---> Logical Volume = Fast
Logical Volume ---> Clustered Shared Volume = ??
Clusted Shared Volume ---> Clustered Shared Volume = Pitifully slow
Can anyone explain why this might be?
The guidance in the article is in clear conflict with all other evidence provided around DFSr and clustering, however it seems to lean towards why we may be seeing a real issue with replication performance.
Many thanks for your time and any help/replies that may be received.
    Paul

    Hello Shaon Shan,
I am also having the same scenario at one of my customer place.
We have two FileServers running on Hyper-V 2012 R2 as guest VM using Cluster Shared Volume.  Even the data partition drive also a part of CSV.
It's really confusing whether the DFS replication on CSV are supported or not, then what would be consequence if using.
In my knowledge we have some customers they are using Hyper-V 2008 R2 and DFS is configured and running fine on CSV since more than 4 years without any issue.
Appreciate if you can please elaborate and explain in details about the limitations on using CSV.
    Thanks in advance,
    Abul
