Moving some rolls to an external drive to save disk space

I use my own folder structure with iPhoto 6. Each roll is in one folder on my powerbook hard-drive. As I am running out of space I would like to move the oldest rolls/folders to an external drive without losing my edits.
Is there any utility that will let me do that, or some iphoto library file in which I could search the old path and replace it with the new path?
Thanks

Anatole:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Are you using iPhoto in it's "alias" mode, i.e. do not copy the files into the library but use alias files instead?
No, you can't move just one or two roll source folder to the external. However, you can move all of them to the external HD.
If you do, when you try to edit a photo in a roll you'll get a warning, "Alert, the photo cannot be opened because the original item cannot be found". Then two buttons, Cancel and Find Photo... Select the find photo, navigate to that roll folder on the external HD and select that photo. That will reset the links for all files in that folder. You'll have to repeat that procedure for each roll in the library.
But you have to be using iPhoto's alias mode. It can't be done with a conventional library.

  • How do I archive email in Mail to an external drive to save disk space?

    Mail
My 160 GB hard drive is filling up fast.  I am trying to move files to an external drive to make space.  Running a small business I have been moving emails from my host server to my disk to saves space on the server.  Now I need to move the emails off my hard disk to save space.
I tried draging and dropping emails. This only works one email at a time.  I have about 20,000 emails I need to move.  Any suggestions?

This is not what I am looking for.  I would like to still be able to search the emails after copying them.  By exporting, I would have to import them back into mail to read.
    Any other suggestions?

  • Can I move cache to external hard drive to save disk space for photoshop and bridge?

Can I move cache to external hard drive to save disk space for photoshop and bridge?

So could I take everything off my external hard drive, save it to my Mac, then re-format it for my Mac and move everything back to the external hard drive?
Yes. Keep in mind that you need to back up all data, including the data on an external drive. So if you're going to use the external drive to store original data, as opposed to backups, then you really need another one to back up the first one. You also need to back up the data on your internal drive, of course. This isn't optional. You must do it, or you'll lose everything sooner or later. All disk drives fail eventually, often with no warning.
If I do that how do I format the external hard drive for my Mac?
Launch the Disk Utility application and search the built-in help for "erase."
Would it be easier to just buy a external hard drive that is for a Mac?
All external hard drives work with Macs. Some might come pre-formatted for use with Macs, but it only takes a few minutes to do that yourself.

  • How can I copy only some music to an external drive to free up space on my lenovo laptop?

I have a lenovo laptop and almost ne space left on my computer. How do move the library to an external drive?
As a separate question, there are several folders labelled "old I tunes library"  What are these?

In one line you say "some music" but then you ask about moving the library which is a big single parcel.  Moving the whole library is easy.  Moving just some media is not so easy and can cause complications in the future unless you are really familiar with how iTunes operates.
To move the whole library you copy your iTunes folder and everything it contains to the other drive.  Start iTunes while holding down the shift key, then guide it to the library location on the external.
To move just some things is more complicated and I am not sure of the best method with new iTunes versions (I run an old one), nor of the key combinations on a PC. You posted in the iTunes for Mac forum and I'll request this be moved to iTunes for Windows.

  • Moved iPhoto 11 library to external drive and have a iPhoto Library file left on desktop

    Hello,
I have a blue file on my desktop labeled iPhoto Library, that appeared during the course of me moving my  iPhoto Library ( iPhoto 11) to an external hard drive to make room on the internal disk, my attempts to reopen iPhoto on the internal disk,  move selected photos from the iPhoto Library on the external drive over to the newly emptied iPhoto Library on my laptop.
The blue iPhoto Library file contains these items:
    AlbumData.xml
    AlbumData2.xml
    iPhoto.ipspot
Questions: does this blue file belong somewhere or can I trash it?
    This is what I did:
    1. I opened Pictures, dragged the iPhoto Library from there to the external drive.
    2. When I opened iPhoto on my MBP it said it needed a library to open with and the choices already in the box were:
    iPhoto Library(default)
    iPhoto Library
    3. I chose "iPhoto Library" because I thought "(default)" meant restoring the original library.
    4. iPhoto opened to the "get started with iPhoto" like a new install.
5.I moved (drag and drop ) some photos from the external drive back into the "empty" iPhoto Library. I tried to move a group of photos but I didn't know how to do it so ...
    6. I took the iPhoto Library from the trash and put it back into the "empty" iPhoto Library.
    7. I tried to delete all the photos except the ones I wanted to keep in the internal iPhoto Library. I couldn't do it so....
    8. I closed iPhoto, went back into Pictures and trashed the internal iPhoto Library again.
    9. Reopened iPhoto and it needed a library to open with and I think I clicked
    iPhoto Library (default)
    10. When I opened iPhoto this time, it was the "get started with iPhoto" but the original photo albums and labels listed but all empty.
That's what I remember so far.
    Hope you can help.

It appears you created a new library.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select "Choose Library".
Navigate to the library on the external hard drive and select it.  Once you're satisfied that it's the one you want you can delete that folder from your desktop.

  • Moving iTunes library to an external drive.

My startup disk is full so I would like to move my iTunes library to an external drive to fee up space.  What is the best way to do this?

Our iTunes guru Terence Devlin advises the following:
    1. Quit iTunes
    2. Drag the iTunes folder from your internal hd - located in ~/Music folder - to your external hd. DO NOT delete the original one from your internal hd... yet!
    3. When the transfer is complete, press and hold the Option(alt) key and fire up iTunes.
    4. A "Choose iTunes Library" window will come up. Click on the "Choose Library" button.
    5. Navigate to where the iTunes folder is located in the external hd.
    6. Within the iTunes folder, select the iTunes Library file and click Choose...
That's it. iTunes will now display all your playlists, songs, movies, podcasts etc. At this point, should you wish, you can delete the iTunes folder from the internal hd to free up space.

  • I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

I'm out of space on my hard drive. How do I move move entire photo albums from iphoto and save them to an external drive to free up space?

You do not move the albums - you move the entire iphoto library intake as a single entity
Make sure your external drive is formatted Ma OS extended (journaled) - then
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive

  • "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read"

this is a problem on my 2x3GHz quad-core intel xeon macPro running os 10.5.7, and itunes 8.2. i have a 1TB external hard drive (firewire 800) that holds all my music for itunes. i have never had any problem with this setup before, until recently.
once, a while back i got an error on my itunes (that popped up without me doing anything.. seemingly random) saying something about not being able to save the itunes library. that went away after a restart, and hasn't returned.
BUT a new problem now happens any time i try to add more music to my itunes library. i have always added music to itunes by setting up my preferences "add file to library" and have the itunes library pointing to my external hard drive. then by dragging the files on-top of a playlist, it sorts and adds the files to my external hard drive. i have been using this process for years without any glitches.
now when i try to drag files into itunes, i get: "attempting to copy to [external drive] failed. the disk could not be read from or written to"
i double checked the read/write privileges on my external drive and nothing has changed since i got it. (it's still read/write access for my user.. and i've even tried putting a "read/write" for "all" as well. no dice)

thanks, that actually doesn't help the issue i'm having.
but now the problem has expanded to finder and everything else. so i'm pretty sure the external hard drive is starting to go out. i'm currently attempting to back up all 700GB of info from the drive.

  • Moving all Video to an external Drive

Was trying to get all of my videos ... some in libraries by themselves, some in iMovie, some in iPhoto into a single library ... whether under iPhoto or iMovie so that I could get that big chunk of data off my hard drive and onto an external drive.
I also have movies on another iMac, that I would like to move off of that computer and move all data onto a separate external hard drive so that I can work on movie projects on either computer just my moving the external HD from one computer to another.
    Any help ... appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Hi
    iMovie'08
Do not move or alter any folder named iMovie Projects or iMovie Events on DeskTop/Finder !
If You do - iMovie will be confused and in some cases this might end up as un-repairably.
Moving - Can/Should only be done within iMovie and in iMovie'08 only Events can be
moved. Still this is the important one as it contains all raw material and takes up most space.
In iMovie'09 and 11 - Projects also can be moved to an external hard disk.
THE EXTERNAL HARD DISK - HAS TO and should.
    • HAS TO - be Mac OS Extended formatted ! ! - nothing else will work OK with VIDEO
(all mine ext.HDs are journalled - works greatly for me)
    • Should be - a FireWire one as it will work much better than USB/USB2
I which that libraries would be handled same way in iPhoto - BUT They are not - For best
    info ask in iPhoto forum.

  • Moving iTunes library to an external drive converting to different format

I want to move entire iTunes library to an external drive. I've found several Mac 101's to help but those helps makes no sense. I should be able to move music to another drive and give iTunes the path to find it but that does not work.
All files are iTunes Plus including everything from Amazon but I want to convert everything to a mp3 or other format so all files are independent of iTunes. Lots of old music from CDs I imported and lots from iTunes as well as Amazon. I guess i could sit and burn everything to a physical cd but that would take months and hundreds and hundreds of cds. Can someone advise how I can convert these files and then move to an external drive?
I'm running mountain lion and version 10.7 of iTunes. Two external drives and 145 gigs of music. Any guidance will be most appreciated.
    Thanks.

    HI Limnos,
Thanks for the reply. Something I forgot (age) to mention, this quest to move the library is precipitated by the Mac drive is running out of space. While I still have about 50 gigs of room left, I was thinking I should just plan on opening up the space by moving the iTunes library.
The other reason is, I read an article about how upon ones death one can not bequeath ones digital music or book files to loved ones.  IE; If all of the music was on LP's, tapes, cd's then this physical format can be left in ones final will. But according to what I read and trying to read the user policy by Apple, Amazon etc when one downloads music or a book or whatever that use policy says we don't own the material we only can read it or listen to it. When we die it dies with us. Several people in the article as well as myself believe this is crap. At one time I was purchasing content and then burning it. I stopped because I thought how silly to burn it, I have back ups on an external drive. Man was I wrong. If I have to I'll sit here in my last days and burn hundreds of cd's.
So realizing this, I want to take all my music files and save them to another drive as though this drive was hundreds of cd's. That way all those files in some other format can be played independent of iTunes or transfered to one of my kids PC's or a Mac if they get with the program.  If the conversion process destroys the integrity of the file then I have no choice but to burn cd's.
In my estimation, I'm doing nothing wrong. I bought downloadable music just as if I'd bought cd's. I should be able to throw it away or give to my kids upon my death. The kids can decide what they want to do with it once I'm gone. I now no longer buy any music or books in a digital download. All content is purchased with a physical copy. That said, more content providers are moving towards downloads only or like Amazon and Apple towards the cloud and streaming. I realize all this gets into the fair use act but I think most people are unaware of this issue.

  • Moving iDVD movies to an external drive.

I have made many movies of my family and my hard drive was getting full. So I purchased an external hard drive and moved some of my iDVD movies to the external drive. When I went back later to look at the iDVD files I got the "broken assets" message. I know this is because I moved the iDVD file. My question is if it is possible to preserve the iDVD movie files with everything in place that it needs over to the external drive so I want get the "broken assets" message. How do I copy the media files along with the iDVD file? Is it possible, or is there a work around?

  • Moving iTunes media files to external drive broke connection

I recently moved my iTunes media files to an external drive.  All other iTunes related files were left in my home folder.  Everything worked great for about a month.  Then, mysteriously, I went to access a movie and it said that it could not be found.  I performed the search to my external and the movie played just fine.  Somehow, my connection to iTunes has been broken.  Incidentally, all media files in my external drive show up in the respective folders in iTunes.  They just have exclamation points associated with most of them.  Strangely, some of the files play just fine without having to search.  Very confused.  Can anyone provide a solution to re-establishing my link to iTunes?  Thank you very much.
    Bill

You had the drive plugged in and mounted before starting iTunes?
Sometimes a link will get broken, but then re-established, such as doing the aforementioned forgetting to start the drive first.  When you double click the track it will try again and suddenly find it works again.  It can be a nuisance having to test each track this way.  You may find that Dougscript "List MIA" will help do this.
    http://dougscripts.com/itunes/
I have not seen any successful automated way to re-form truly broken links.  You have to either do it by hand or just add the media again.  If you add the media again some things will be re-set such as date added (obviously), playcount, etc.  I don't use any of those so it doesn't matter to me if I have to do this (and there are tricks to storing them in places where they will be kept).
Why they got broken? One reason mentioned before.  Have you re-named anything or moved it?  Have you ever had multiple drives with the same name plugged in?

  • Moving projects to external drive to save space

    Hey guys,
My internal hard drive is running low on space. However, I have an external hard drive with plenty of space.
Some of my projects are up to 3-5 gigabytes in size. I'd like to know how to properly transfer these projects to my external hard drive so that I can have more room on my internal hard drive without affecting my project.
What I've tried is moving a project folder to my external and moving it back to my internal if I try opening it up again. The issue is that a lot of the audio files cannot be found once when I re-open my project off my internal (or external) hard drive.
What am I doing wrong? How do you guys deal with this issue of running out of space and needing to move your Logic files to an external hard drive? Thanks!

    castlljs wrote:
Maybe I need to better understand how a project refers to audio files. This is how I understand it...
Whenever an audio file is made within a project (bouncing a track, recording vocals with a mic), that file automatically gets created in the "Audio Files" folder. If a project is referring to an audio file that exists in a different project folder or something else completely different (not sure why it would,
...I think there are many people that have audio files that are used in several projects. Not too odd.
but just hypothetically), then is it supposed to be able to find and refer to that audio file in it's non-project folder location since it didn't "move" with the project folder?
Right. A socalled "absolute path" is in the project file: on +that exact location+ it is. So only if you somehow move that file to any other location (or rename any folder in its path), it'll no longer be found by your project.
However, I think Logic does not use absolute paths anymore, just relative: it should be in "This project folder/Audio files" , no matter where "This project folder" is. So move or copy, the paths travel with it and do not change.
If not, is it possible that when I move a project folder to my external, the project attempts to change...
No, a file that is not open cannot be accessed. The CONTENT of your project file will not change.
...where it refers to an audio file? In other words, does the project know that it should refer to audio files folder within the same project folder, even if that project folder moved from my internal to external hard drive?
That is what (I hope) I explained above.
But then it gets messed up since the audio file was something out side of the project folder to begin with?
Depending on what the ... you did with those audio files (have you looked for them already?), it COULD be that the project file has an absolute path for "outside" audio files, and that you moved those audio files or whatnot, and the absolute path has gone and the project cannot locate it. But if you have not touched them, the project should locate them anyway.
Just trying to figure out why one of my projects transferred successfully while the others didn't.
You first have to remember where your files were, or are. Find 'm!
And when in doubt, use *Include Assets* .
