Moving Tabs in Safari

I've searched the forum and cannot find a reference to this. Is there any way to rearrange the left to right order of tabs in Safari? I can't find a way to grab a tab and move it one way or the other. Any help?

Safari Beta 3 allows moving of tabs along the Tab Bar. Also, moving tabs from one window to another. You can see this for yourself here - select #6 tabbed browsing.
Within Safari 2, 3rd party add-on Safari Extender provides the same tab movement. Also, a double-click on the tab bar opens a new tab.
Lastly, 3rd party add-on SAFT has a few tab features, including where to position a new tab on the bar and opening any browser window in a new tab (rather than a new window).

MacBook Pro Freezing when opening new tab in Safari - MY SOLUTION

All,
I have been battling with a Safari issue for months; I have seen many postings of the same and similar problems.
Problem when opening a new tab in Safari the computer completely froze up. Sometimes the curser still moved around but could not select anything, requiring a hard reset. Sometime the screen went blue and the computer reset on its own. Crashed at least once daily.
I thought it might be OSX, Safari or Flash; however I upgraded each of those several times with no major progress. Note adobe is constantly upgrading flash and some recommended you should use their uninstaller before upgrading.
One thing I noticed when opening a new tab was that the tab was a bit slow in opening, taking a few seconds with a hiccup to show "top sites." I got suspicious when I saw the lead picture of one site with a blank adobe flash warning showing up for a second or two... My system is a few years old but has a fast drive, lots of memory and is optimized for speeeed.
MY SOLUTION>>>
So I tried changing how the new tab showed up by selecting: Safari>Preferences>General>New Tabs Open With Empty Page. I think that worked but don't remember. I really missed the "top sites" preview. So I put that back and just killed the flash ridden site from the "top sites" (just open a tab, click edit at the bottom left corner of the tab then click on "x" for the suspect site).
FYI - The suspect site administrator told the browser could be storing a corrupt cookie; I reset Safari and ran OnyX so am not sure if that is the issue but it might be a clue for others.
FYII - I think the problem is related to flash implementations on some sites if that was not clear in the text

I don't have these problems as you described, but did you drag the Cookies.plist to the desktop and relaunch Safari an try to open a NEW TAP.
What happens now ... is Safari handling opening a new tap from the TOP SITE window?

Moving tabs and windows

Hi,
I've been having some issues with moving tabs into different windows or new windows and vice versa. Whenever I drag a tab to move it into a new window or place it in a different window it shows the animation however it takes at least 5 seconds after I let go of the mouse for it to lock in and do anything. During this time I can still move it around, it's like there is a delay of some sort. Any ideas how to make it instantaneous?

I feel it likely to be an add-on, nonetheless - but assuming it's not, you'd have to start removing things, like the Home/Library/Safari/ folder say, then testing again. (move files with Safari quit & don't trash anything until you've rescued bookmarks )
If not that, you'd have to move onto say the whole Home/Library/Preferences/ folder, followed right away by restarting/testing & if no improvement, replace them again & another restart - all apps quit for that one.
I'd suggest, just on numbers here, that you use Activity Monitor, select Safari, then use Inspect-Open files & ports & edit-copy the list, pasting it here if unsure whether or not it shows any likely suspects... you'll be looking for something like /Users/justin/Library/etc/etc

How to move efficiently to different tabs in Safari?

I have Safari 5.1.9 and MBP 2011 13" 10.6.8
The main reason I don't use Safari is because of the tabs feature, but I am thinking of moving back to Safari. I am a former user of Firefox, and currently use Google Chrome. As you may know, in order to move to different tabs in Firefox and Chrome (I believe also Opera), you press the command key and a number, and pressing command+9 will take you to the last tab, and in order to move to adjacent tabs, you press command+option+right/left arrow keys. Pressing the command key and a number in Safari will take you to a bookmark, and in order to move to adjacent tabs, you press control+shift+end arrow(?) or control+end arrow(?). (I don't know how to do the "end arrow" on my MBP). I have many bookmarks and bookmark folders, so command+# wont really do anything for me, and many tabs open at once, so I prefer using firefox and chrome settings for this.
Is there a way (like, maybe some extension) to disable the command+number=bookmark and change it to command+number=tab in safari, and also teach me how to use the move to adjacent tabs on Safari on a laptop or change the settings so they are like firefox and chrome?

I use Ctrl - Tab to move through the tabs : Ctrl-Shift Tab moves right to left instead.
Command - Shift & left/right arrow also works, but then stops if you land on a tab with a text field open, like typing this reply... so Ctrl-Tab seems more consistent.

Not once the tab has been closed. If it hasn't, clicking and holding the Back button will display the titles of recently visited sites in that tab.

Try a Restart.
Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red "slide to power off" slider appears, and then slide the slider. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
Resetting your settings
You can also try resetting all settings. Settings>General>Reset>Reset All Settings. You will have to enter all of your device settings again.... All of the settings in the settings app will have to be re-entered. You won't lose any data, but it takes time to enter all of the settings again.

Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button together for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears. Apple recommends this only if you are unable to restart it.

Privacy tab in safari 5.1 preferences is empty.

This is a screen shot of what I see when I open the privacy tab in safari preferences. Any reasons for this? Help!!!

Just spent an hour at an Apple Store with 2 Genius' and was not able to resolve the issue. This issue exists on both my Macs. One is running Lion and the other Snow Leopard. We checked other systems in store and none of them had problems. I suspect that this problem came as a result of an OSX / Safari update at some point because I haven't always had this problem. Safari Preference Pane isn't something that I (and I suspect many) people get into very frequently, so there's probably others with this problem (they just don't know it yet).
I did find that if you're using Lion which will re-open where you left off once you quit, that the following "work around" seems to work consistently. Open the preference pane that's blank (i.e. Privacy or Extensions). Next, quit Safari without closing the Preference Pane. Relaunch Safari and the Preference Pane appears displaying correct content. The strange thing, at least on my Lion system, is that the Blank Preference Pane flips between Privacy and Extensions. But, I'm able to correct the Preference Pane I need by going through this procedure. Again, this does not work for Snow Leopard because it won't re-open where you left off.
I've tried reinstalling Safari and nothing changes. My (and the Genius Bar's) opinion is that a "Fresh Install" is all that will probably fix this. Not an option for me at this point, so I'll just get along for now.
Wishing all with this issue the Best and I hope someone eventually comes up with something other than a "Fresh Install Option".

When opening a new tab in Safari, the spinning wheels appears

Please help, I have very basic skills on a computer, so please make this simple and easy!!
When I open a new tab in Safari, it freezes and the spinning wheel appears. It stays on there for a long period of time and does not disappear. In order to get on I need to Force closure in Safari and restart the computer. Sometimes this will solve the problems and sometimes it needs to be restarted a few times.
This is really annoying and stops me using my mac.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

When opening a new tab in Safari...

Is there a way to keep Safari from opening up my recent searches window every time I make a new tab in Safari?
I find it annoying that it always pops down And gets in the way of the bookmarks bar etc.

Clearing Safari's history : Settings > Safari > Clear History
Then close Safari completely and when you re-open it your search history should have gone (though focus will still default to the search box). To close Safari : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.

How to put the focus on the address bar, when opening a new tab in Safari?

Dear users, I'm using Safari 6.0.3 (8536.28.10) under OSX 10.8.3. Until recently, whenever I opened a new tab in Safari, the focus was always on the address bar, which was quite useful. However, since last week, maybe after an update (I don't know exactly), the focus of a new tab is always on the page, not the address bar. How can I go back to the previous configuration? I changed no options, it simply got sudeenly different, and it's quite annoying. Thank you for the help.

How to get AppleScript to close a specific tab in Safari?

I want to use AppleScript to close a tab in Safari.
My scipt opens when my computer turns on, opens Safari, opens a new tab, goes to my schools website and automatically logs me into their internet.
After that, I want it to close the tab that it just did all that in. How can I do this? I don't want to close all tabs, just the current tab. This is what I have so far...

Nevermind. I figured it all out. Now, this will open Safari, log me into the schools internet, close the corresponding tabs, and minimize Safari.
