Moving the iMovie 9 Resources (Events & Projects) Folders ?

Hi there. Recently I moved my iTunes Library and Aperture Library folder to an external dedicated 1TB hard drive.... this has been great in freeing up valuable hard drive space on my main computers hard drive. My iMovie resource files (i Movie Events & iMovie Project) are also very large and it would be great to move these to the external 1TB drive. But when I look at the preferences for the app... I don't see a "selection destination library" option. It must be something silly I'm not seeing.... or can it be... you can't have the resource files exist outside the main "Movies" folder on the main user drive.
Any comments or suggestions are most welcome.
Yours sincerely,
Anthony

You can move Events and Projects to the external drive. This must be done in iMovie, not the Finder.
First click VIEW/By DISK. You will see your properly formatted drives listed in the Events source pane and the Projects source pane. You can drag and drop Events and Projects to these disk icons. iMovie will automatically create the proper folders on the external drive.
There are additional options in iMovie 09. For example, you can move an Event, Project, and associated resources to an external drive together, so that if you need to port them to a different computer, it is easily done. See the HELP for details.

  • FC Events & Projects folders on external HD, and some clips missing.

    Hello there,
Searched for an answer, but nothing seems to be exactly my experience.
To help my MBP perform better, I moved my FCP X "events" & "projects" folders to an external LaCie HD. Folks here say they should be at the "root". Unsure how to check that, but I do know they are at the lowest level of folder on the drive, with no other folders above them.
Most clips show up in all the projects when FCP X is opened. But some don't; modifying event references with Inspector leads to the event not showing up at all, so I can't even move it to the top.
Then tried to "import from camera" and open the LaCie drive as an archive. But when clicking on the proper event folder, the message appears, ""Intrvw-WendyEllen_20Jun11" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media."
Original media files on HD are all still there from when I first imported into FCP X. Now the same files are duplicated in the FCP X "events" folder, which also got moved to the external HD. Choosing either folder gets the same message.
According to the manual, the yellow alert triangle showing in the timeline means the event is missing.
<complaint> FCP X isn't very intuitive or user friendly on directing it to see the proper files. If something is missing, why can't I just pick where FCP should look for those files? Why can't I recreate a new path to those files, of the original one was broken? I'm not keen on the Events & Projects folders _having_ to be _set in stone_ on the MBP's harddrive. Where those files lie should be a choice.</complaint>
    My system is 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 8GB RAM w/ Mac OS X 10.6.8.
Please let me know what I'm missing that FCP can no longer find the proper files. I'm sure it's something super easy, too obvious to figure out. In fact, if there's a way to ditch the "events' folder altogether & just have FCP X pull/render from the external HD files all the time, I'd love to learn that solution.
    Thanks in advance!

You are correct about root ... no other folders above the FCP X folders is the way it's supposed to be.  I noticed that FCP X can get confused if you first opened up or created a project with the Final Cut Pro folders on your system drive then you try to make a copy of them on an external drive.  That is what I did at first also.  I would recommend moving your system drive Final Cut Pro X folders to a safe backup drive such as usb, etc then ejecting that drive.  Make sure they no longer exist on the system drive.  Then go to your external drive where you first copied them to and go into the Final Cut Projects folder. Then go into a folder that has the name of your project, or if you created "Folders" in FCP X to put your projects in then go into the folder that has the name of the folder you created within FCP X.  Within one of those will be a folder named after your project name you had assigned it in FCP X.  Inside that will be a file called CurrentVersion.fcpproject. Double click on that file, and Final Cut Project X will open with that project. In your Project Library window on the lower half of the display, over against the left you will see Macintosh HD, or whatever your system drive is called.  Under that will be the name of your external drive. Indented to the right slightly under your external drive will be the name of the project you have just loaded.  Just keep working in that one from now on without moving the old FCP X folders backing onto the system drive.  If you get some clips that are red meaning that FCP X can no longer find them, copy them from your original system drive or the Final Cut Events folder to the event name you had placed them in when you imported them into your project.  You can also simply find them and re-import them into FCP X and be done with it.  It has been my observation that you do not want to have two Final Cut Project or Events (or any of the other) FCP X folders on two drives that are active at the same time.  Best practice is to leave them off your system drive and put them on an external Firewire drive.  If you need to make a backup of them periodically, put a usb drive or another Firewire drive on your system WITHOUT GOING INTO FINAL CUT PRO X, and use Finder to simply copy the folders to the other drives as a backup ... then eject the backups.  You can then continue working in FCP X.  Sounds detailed, but the bottom line is FCP X does not seem to like two FCP X file systems on two attached drives at the same time.  At least that's the way it has seemed in my experience.  Hope this helps.

  • Moving the iMovie app to an external drive

I currently download a lot of video each day into iMovie and I am constantly running into an issue where I am out of hard-drive disk space. It really limits how much video I can work on at one time. I called and spoke with a member of the Apple Support App Team and he advised that I move the iMovie app to an external hard drive to resolve the issue. I have since done that, but the video clips are still saving to my internal hard-drive instead of the external hard-drive where the app is. When I moved the iMovie app to the external hard-drive, I disconnected the external hard-drive and deleted the app from my internal hard-drive. After emptying the trash, I re-connected the external hard-drive and opened iMovie and began importing movie clips. A little while later, I ran Omni Disk Sweeper and all of the clips that I imported still show on my internal and meanwhile, the external's capacity is only showing the iMovie app itself and no clips. Any ideas on how I can route the clips to the external instead of my Mac's internal hard-drive?

Instead of moving the iMovie application, click here and follow the instructions.

  • "Final Cut Events/Projects" folders missing

So I upgraded to Mavericks over the weekend and things were going great for a while. I wasn't experiencing any of the known issues that other people were experiencing after the upgrade.
But then I clicked the Movies tab in finder and realized that my "Final Cut Events" and "Final Cut Projects" are missing! The backups folder is still intact, as well as my libraries, but those folder are missing. I've searched thoroughly around my MacBook and cannot locate them.
So I guess I'm wondering: is there away to recreate these folders? I can still access events and projects from within Final Cut Pro but the only way to get to the events or projects is by right-clicking on a library in the Movies tab and selecting the "Show Package Contents" option.
This is my first post on the forum because I am literally puzzled and have spent many hours searching for a solution to no avail. Any and all help would be greatly, greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Mark, thanks for lending a helping hand. Truthfully, I don't rememeber that option when I upgraded. There was nothing too important in the folders, as I store the larger projects on my Time Capsule and try to delete old events as I complete the projects. However, when I now import footage, the events are only created in the designated FC library. Those folders don't exist on my computer anymore and they are not in the trash. Is there a way to recreate the folders or did I completely ruin FC? Thanks again for your help, it means a lot.

  • Saved old Events & Projects folders: How old delete safely?

    Hi
When starting up FCPX 10.1, I chose to save my old Events and Projects folders used in earlier versions of FCPX, just in case.
Now, happy with 10.1, just in case I feel like it, how would I delete them? Just trash them? Should/Can it be done thru FCPX?

    Luis!
My thanks again! I'm surprised it's that simple, what's left after the upgrade must be just hard links in those folders, otherwise one would be trashing the real thang.
Btw, I have this odd desire to cheer for Portugal in the upcoming World Cup...

  • I moved the imovie app to the trash. Where can I download it now again?

    Hello!
I have serious problems with imovie since thursday! The problem is, that imovie doesn't play audio that I add to the timeline!
So, I decided to reinstall it. I moved imovie to trash and emptied the bin. And then I wanted to download it again, but I don't know where I can download it!
Could someone give me further advice?
    Thank you
    noodlepuppy

What was the point of moving it to the trash?
iMovie has never been available for download. It either came bundles with your Mac and can be found on the original install disks, or you acquired it by buying iLife, in which case you will have it on your iLife install disk.

  • I moved the project files and now I can't get them back into iMovie 11

I was working on a project but I ran out of disk space before I could finish it. Now, for this very purpose, I have an external hard drive with plenty of space on it. So I tried moving the folder with all my project files onto the external hd, and now iMovie can't find my project anymore. With iMovie '06 it was as simple as hitting "save as" and saving the project to the external hd, but I guess that's not complicated enough for the new version. Now I can't get into my project. I even try clicking on the actual project file, and it goes to iMovie as if the project was about to open, but nothing happens. So I fear I wasted a lot of time working on that project only to have to start all over because I ran out of disk space.
Someone please tell me there's a way to get the project files open again. Thanks

... my external disk isn't formatted as Mac OS extended (journaled). I don't know how to do this,...
that is a simple one and should be a routine after purchasing a new drive (in a Mac-only environment!):
    • on your Mac, Apps/Utilities you'll find Disk 'Utility'
    • on the left lane, you'll notice your connected hard drive(s)
    • select it, click on the 'erase' tab
    • NOTE: FORMATTING A DRIVE MEANS ERASING ALL CONTENT ON THAT DRIVE!
that's why you should do it as step#1 after purchasing a new drive

  • New iMovie w/Mavericks: No Projects or Events

Installed Mavericks and the subsequent iMovie update.
Bad news: my iMovie events and projects do not appear in the new version of iMovie
Good news: The old version of iMovie is still present and works fine.
Any idea how to get the events and projects into the new version?
"File>Update Projects and Events" does not work; result is "iMovie could not find any projects or events to update".

All:  are you just looking for files from within iMovie?  Where are your iMovie Event/Project folders in the Finder? (default user/Movies/iMovie...)
Did you do a Finder search for iMovie?  Go to Finder/Find (not Spotlight) and search for Name>Contains>iMovie.   Then click ONCE on a file that you couldn't find.  At the bottom of the search window you will find the path (username>Movies>iMovie Events>youreventname>  etc. etc.)
There's probably something that needs to be relinked to the new version of iMovie.  I doubt that any files have been deleted; if they have, they will be in the Trash.

  • Unable to Understand iMove Events, Projects, or iMovie Photo Library.  Help!

I've got iMovie 10.1 and, unlike other Apple software, I cannot make heads or tails about how it is storying my video clips.   Things that appear in IMovie Library do not appear in All Events.  How can that be possible?  Shouldn't All Events contain any clip I have imported?  I can't even figure out what is the difference between those two folders.   I can't figure out what All Projects contains. either.  It seems to contain the same thing that is in iMovie Library so why have two folders with different names that have the same things?
I've been trying to research this on the web and have not found anybody who can explain what these different folders mean.   Can somebody here do it?
Also, I can't delete a clip no matter what I do.  If I right click on it and say move to trash (while in IMovie Library) it looks like it deleted it but when I go to the actual folder in the Finder, where IMovie Library is,  the clip is still there.   This is one of those maddening cases where the delete button does not delete anything.
The help for iMovie is basically useless.  I cannot find any explanation as to how to delete a clip or how to organize them using these confounding folder names that seem to be different names for exactly the same thing.  Has anybody mastered this?

iMovie 10.1 stores everything in a library package with the extension .imovielibrary but you can have more than 1 library.  When in iMovie, 'All Events' should show all the events in the currently open libraries just as 'All Projects' should do for projects.  These are not actual folders but simply display all the items currently available from the open libraries.
Deleting clips is described in help under:  Browse & organize the library - Organize your events & projects - Delete movies, trailers, clips, and events
Help does contain a lot more information that appears at first but its not always obvious which section to find it in. Its worth going through it all carefully because so many things have been changed in imovie 10 compared to 9.
Some patience is needed to get in tune with the new way of doing things.
    Best of luck!
    Geoff.

  • Moving an iMovie project

I have a 1hr movie created using iMovieHD 6.0.3 on a G4 iMac that has no superdrive, and thus, no iDVD.
I would like to author using iDVD on a separate workstation (quad core MacPro, running iDVD 6.0.3).
Moving the iMovie project file is not an option (15GB size). Is there any way to 'export/share to iDVD' on a separate computer?

Can the two computers be connected with a firewire cable? Of course they would need to be in the same place to do this.
I've done what you are trying to do (after transferring the file over an ethernet network). A problem was that there were associated files that were not transferred. These included music on iTunes that was used as background music. These had to then be separately imported into itunes on the second computer. Anyone have a suggestion as to how to prevent this problem?

  • The pictures in several events I imported disappeared, only the event names remain. Now iPhoto crashes when I try to import new files. Any ideas?

I imported several hundred pictures to different events. Some directly from a Canon EOS camera (large card) and some form old CD's. The import process went fine. But I noticed some events were empty after having seen them in the library. Thought it was my mistake and may have moved the pictures to other event. The last CD I was importing could not be read and iPhoto hanged. I had to force turn off the laptop and when restarted, several of the newer events were also empty and now iPhoto crashes when I try to Import to Library. Does anybody has had an experience like this? I really need to recover the pictures because I already deleted them from the camera. Help will be greatly appreciated.

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Are the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders needed?

I'm using version 10.0.6 of iMovie and moved some of my projects to an external HD using File > Move Events to Library.  I noticed in my Movies folder in my home directory that the related project folders under iMovie Events and iMovie Projects weren't moved.  It seems that these are left over after upgrading iMovie and that it just uses the iMovie Library and iMovie Theater bundles.  Can the iMovie Events and iMovie Projects folders be safely deleted?

Yes they can be deleted if you have moved all the projects you want to work further on to iMovie 10, have checked that they are working OK, and are happy with switching permanently to iMovie 10.  (There's no going back).
On the other hand if you leave them you can still use the earlier version of iMovie.

I moved it because I did not have room on my hard drive to import my latest video. I take videos my grandkids basketball games then edit them as projects. I don't have room to move the whole events library back to my hard drive. Can I move part of it at a time.
I filled up my 1 TB back up drive so got a 3TB to move my video projects to. Do I have to move both the i photo videos and the projects to the 3 TB drive together some how. When can I delete them off the hard drive .
I moved all the i photo library to the 3 TB drive and deleted them out of i photo. That is 87 GB which I don't have room for on my hard drive.
I think when I use the export movie to my hard drive it works but will I still be able to edit it later if I want. Is it best to do quick time or i tunes if I use the export feature.

  • When I go to save my unfinished imovie project, neither of the "imovie projects" or "imovie events" are visible where they should be. Why is this?

When I go to save my unfinished imovie project, neither of the "imovie projects" or "imovie events" are visible where they should be. Why is this?

The latest version (iMovie 10) doesn't have iMovie projects and iMovie events folders - these were for iMovie 9 and earlier.   In iMovie 10 Projects are in Events and Events are in Libraries.  When you quit iMovie the current status of your projects and events are automatically saved in the library so there is nothing to do.  The default location for libraries is in ~ / Movies folder but you can put them anywhere, such as on an external drive .  If you want to backup the library you can make a copy of it on a separate disk or memory stick using the Finder.

help! my imovie project library is full of temporary folders.. some are the ones i deleted.. i tried deleting the folders one by one but when i try to open the imovie, the folders keep coming back to my project library..

If it was working on 10/1, why not open up the most recent backup library with a timestamp of that day. Unless you specified otherwise, your backup folder is in Movies in your home folder. You can double-click one to open it in FCP.
The update command actually wants a mounted drive selected.
I suggest not going into the library bundles and moving or modifying folders/files except as a last resort. It sounds like both libraries are corrupted.
