Moving the phone line to enter house in different ...

We woudl like to have the phone line moved so that it enters the house in a different location. Could someone give us an indication of costs involved so we can decide it it is more cost effective to use internal wiring or not.
Thanks

There is some information here http://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home/products/serviceproducts/timerelatedcharges/timerelatedcharges....
You would have to contact your service provider first, they would request a visit from Openreach, who would in turn do the work.
It is difficult to guess what the charges would be, but I would suspect they start at about £130.

  • My eMac's modem, the phone line, or what?

i have a dial-up connection. Yes, there are still some of us out here. DSL is not available and I have heard horror stores of satellite service n our area.
Of late, I am having difficulty getting and maintaining a connection. Connection speed varies widely. My ISP wants to blame the phone lines, the phone company wants to blame the house wiring or the modem. How the **** do I know which it is? I have unplugged other phones, tried other jacks, with the same results.I suspect the phone lines, but getting Verizon to admit that is nearly impossible.
How can I test the modem? I am using the internal modem.
I am open to any suggestions.

It's usually the phone lines in your house. They are daisy-chained around the house & every connection results in losses. Verison should be able to come out and do a test on the line where it enters your house to see if the line meets specs. Also sometimes squirrels will chew on the outside line and allow water to get inside the wires, which causes loss of quality. Do you ever hear static when using the telephones?
Years ago when I used dial-up, I had the problem of low speeds (in the 20K region). I solved the problem by running a new direct line from my attic where the tel line junction box entrance to the house is located, direct to my office. My speed then was usually 44-48K with almost no dropouts. I bought the wire at Home Depot and installed the line myself. Maybe you could do the same.

  • New Wireless Router Shut Down the Phone Line

Just to clarify, I'm not the homeowner or the billpayer at the address that this post concerns. The home and phone belong to a relative who isn't particularly experienced in this sort of thing. She relative is away for the next two weeks, and I promised to try and figure out what was the problem.
A landline fault notice has been filed with BT, but I've been informed that they might not be able to make it out here until this coming Wednesday, so it would be convenient if I could troubleshoot it from my end and safe the technicians a trip.
My information on the issue is limited, having only briefly spoken with the relative about it. As I understand it, she upgraded her wireless broadband with Orange in order to attain speeds of 14MB and to have an unlimited data allowance. Upon recieving the new wireless router, she removed the previous one and correctly wired in the new one. Immediately after this, the landline and internet ceased to work. I've spent the last hour poking around and trying different phone ports in the house to no avail. The phones all say 'Check Phone Line'.
This is all extremely puzzling. I have no idea why plugging in a new router would cause the phone line to shut down. Does anyone have any insight into what might have caused this?

I just went up to the 'main box' in the attic and plugged in an older phone. The line was still dead, which I guess means that whatever happened when the modem was plugged in happened outside the buildings.
Did you unplug the modem when you did the test in the main box?

I have BT Infinity at home with the BT modem connected to the phone line and then to a BThub which delivers the wif signal. I have purchased an airport extreme to improve wi fi strength if how do I connect up to hub it states connect modem to WAN on back of Airport Extreme.
Instructions do not mention connection to BT Hub and the BT modem has only one output which you dicsonnect from Hub and connect to airport extreme leaving. Once you do this Hub has no signal.
    How do I rectify
    Paul

you can also set up the Airport extreme to extend the wireless by hitting the wireless tab in the airport menu then click the drop down menu to select extend
Apple's "extend" function is a proprietary setting that was designed to only work with other Apple routers.
It would be extremely unlikely that this setting would work with a BT product, or any other manufacturer's product for that matter.
But, I haven't tested this with a BT product...and I suppose anything is possible.
Still, I would be extremely surprised if this worked.
The AirPort Extreme might "join" the BT network if you try this......but the AirPort does not provide any additional wireless signal coverage when it "joins" a wireless network. In fact, it really does nothing when it "joins" a network except enable the USB port.

  • Do i need to use the phone line that came with the printer to fax paperwork or can I buy a new one?

    Hi Willcarter,
It is all up to you. You can use the phone line which came with the printer or you can get a new one. It does need to be a 2-wire phone line though.

  • Has Infinity killed the phone line? PLEASE advise ...

Please advise on this connection problem if you can, it is causing much stress for my elderly parents. They are worried about a £129 charge for calling out an engineer, as far as I can see the engineer's visit would qualify as free but I need a more informed view.
Apologies if this all appears a bit longwinded but I know details can be important so will tell it as fully as I can!
    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
My parents had BT Infinity 2 with HomeHub 5 installed a week or so ago. I couldn't be there for the installation so the night before I disentangled their current HomeHub 2 and associated cables from other equipment and left it, all still connected and plugged in and working, in the middle of the spare bedroom floor (where the new installation was to be done) so the engineer would easily see what was already there and what he had to deal with.
On visiting the evening after the Infinity was installed, I was told that they had been having terrible problems getting their laptop to work wirelessly on the new connection and had earlier been on the phone to BT for an hour trying to sort the issue. When I looked in the bedroom I found the old hub all still plugged in and transmitting, this was apparently confusing the laptop, I completely took out the old hub and then the laptop found the internet no problem.
So it all appeared good, the next morning my parents then went on holiday for a week and when they got back yesterday they found that there is no phone line connection. The broadband is fine, just no dial tone regular phone line at all. Dialling the home number from a mobile gets the normal ringing tone on the mobile, but nothing happens on the home phone.
I tried taking the phone base station (Xenon 1500) out of the downstairs extension socket and plugging it directly into the new Infinity wall socket and still nothing. I took the cover off the wall socket and plugged the phone into the test socket inside and their is still nothing.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Now I'm guessing the the phone line was still previously ok after the Infinity installation because it was working through the old hub and when that hub was disconnected the line went dead at that point but no one noticed becuase they went on holiday right after that. I can't try reassembling the connections the old way to see if the phone works because I'm not even sure where all the cables went to!
But shouldn't plugging the phone right into the test socket be a clear test of whether there is a fault with the line? But there is no dial tone at all. Is it possible that by disregarding the installed phone line and hub the engineer has neglected to do something to make the new line work for the phone?
As I said, this is causing quite some worry so any hints would be much appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well I have somehow fixed it, I took out every cable and extension and started over and the phone line is back. I'm not sure but it may have been because the ADSL filters had been left in the line and I have read that the fibre optic line doesn't use them. I really don't know though, so only mention it in case someone in future searches the forum and sees this thread. Try taking out ADSL filters if the installation engineer hasn't done it!

  • BBC/ITV HD etc. down the Phone Line vs Over the ai...

    Hi,
I've just had BT Infinity and prior to this I had and still have a Black BT Vision box and hadn't really realized I would get so many channels including HD channels down the phone line.
I'm curious though, how does the HD picture quality down the phone line compare to when compared to receiving through an aerial or satellite dish?
Which is best and which is worse?
Also, I upgraded to BT Infinity as Skype video calls would always drop out on my laptop after a bit when on BT Broadband using the HomeHub2. Sometimes I had to restart my computer as the dropout would also knock out the internet too and restarting it seemed to be the only way to bring it back. I experienced the same problems both with a wired connection and a wireless connection to my laptop.
Unusually if I try making a Skype video call using Wi-Fi using my mobile phone, the video call never dropped out.
Despite upgrading to BT Infinity and using the HH5, I'm still experiencing dropouts with Skype or receiving poor video and/or audio with it.
Could this therefore be a problem with my laptop or some settings or something?
If it could be laptop settings, could anyone advise me what settings I can change and how I can improve things?
    Kind Regards and Thanks.

There are a few factors that determine picture quality. Resolution, aspect ratio and compression being three main ones.
Freeview SD channels have never all been equal. They all tend to transmit 576 vertical lines, but horizontal resolution can vary to save bandwidth, 720, 704 or 544. Some also use higher rates of data compression to save bandwidth which usually results in a more blurred or blocky picture at times. 4:3 aspect ratio pictures can actually be better defined than 16:9 ones as the latter still use the same transmission resolutions but are stretched out by the TV or box. Some sneaky channels at times use a 16:9 or 14:9 window in the centre of 4:3 picture as black bars compress very nicely and save more bandwidth. The box or TV then sometimes zooms in as appropriate. The resulting picture is usually pretty rubbish.
Freeview HD channels normally represent 16:9 pictures and initially were transmitted at 1440x1080 (4:3) and stretched out. However, I believe they are now transmitted at 1920x1080 which is proper 16:9 (maybe someone could confirm this)? They use more efficient data compression techniques and transmit at a high enough bandwidth to look pretty great.
BT TV multicast SD channels look to me as though they are transmitted at 720x576. Not sure if they still sometimes represent a 4:3 picture when appropriate, but most modern TV content is now 16:9. The compression rate seems low and as the previous post says, compared to Freeview SD they look as good as (if not better than) the best quality Freeview SD channels such as BBC 1. I used to get Sky Sports and ESPN in SD via the TV aerial and the multicast SD versions definitely look much better.
Note: When I view the test channel 475 on my PC using VLC Player it says that channel is at 544x576. I'm guessing this low resolution only applies to the test channel though I have no way of checking on the BT Vision+ box?
BT TV multicast HD channels look very good. Again I have no way of checking the resolution, but I'm guessing they are at 1920x1080 with an aspect ratio always set to represent 16:9 pictures. The compression rate seems as low as the Freeview HD equivalents. I can't really see any difference between the Freeview HD and multicast HD channels on my Full-HD TV. All very high quality.
In simple non-tech speak. SD pictures are better than Freeview, and HD pictures are just as excellent.

  • The Phone Line that doesn't exist...

I've just moved into a new property, the day I moved in I phoned o2 to order their internet and line rental package. The guy I spoke to said he had checked with BT openreach and that the line to my address was ceased and that I would have to pay a connection fee of £85.
I thought this was unusual as the people who owned the house before us had an active phone line, I checked the incoming voltages (I've worked with phone lines before) and there is 50V incoming. I have since got hold of a phone, plugged it into the socket and there is a dial tone. Tried phoning out to see if there is still an active number but after dialing a few digits I get "the number you have called has not been recognised".
Just got off the phone with both o2 and BT who are both adamant that there is no phone line what-so-ever connected to my property and that I have to pay for an engineer to visit and install a line.
Clearly I'm not willing to pay for anyone to come and visit when there is a working line! What can I do?!?!

Sounds as if you have what is known as a soft dial tone on the line.
I don't think that Openreach stop the lines completely these days.
I have to admit I'm not 100% clued up on activation charges or terms for lines but would suggest that you would need to shop around for the best order.
Regardless of what SPs charge for a line they are still charged by Openreach.
When I had my line activated I was told that the line would have had to have been active in the previous 6 weeks for no charge to be raised and an activation to be completed.  Otherwise it would have been looked at as a provide.

  • Moving neighbours phone line due to an extension t...

I contacted BT to move neighbours phone line due to an extension to my house. Asurvey was done and the estimate given to move it a few feet from where it currently is. My neighbour does not want the telephone line to be moved to the proposed new location and wants it elsewhere. Obviously this will cost me more money. Should  I be footing the bill for this extra cost to move it to a place of my neighbour's choice.?

Can you expand on your question, are you asking if your neighbour should foot the rest of the bill or should BT or Openreach?
If you are expecting BT or Openreach to pay the additional charge for your neighbour wanting it elsewhere that isn't going to happen.
If you feel your neighbour should foot the rest of the bill then that is really something you are going to have to come to some sort of an agreement on with your neighbour but at the end of the day you are the one who wants their line moving for your benefit.
Also can I just ask, are you paying BT Retail to do a Lift and Shift or are you paying Openreach to do a Line Plant Rearrangement, I am guessing a Line Plant Rearrangement as you did mention a survey being done and the only thing you can normally order through BT Retail is a Lift and Shift of the NTP inside your neighbours property.

I have an iPhone 3gs 16g white that I bought used and therefore no longer under warranty. Last night he started to get very little phone line and even in places where before now took up the message "service unavailable" how can I fix this? Thanks in advance

The problem is not as if I insert the sim in another phone takes very well. I will try to reset and restore. Have you also had this problem or know of someone who had it and solved it this way?

  • HT201320 I have a iPhone 5c.  Wanting to set up an email account on the phone.  After entering email address and password it sets up an imap account automatically, when I need to set up a pop3 account.  What's happening?

Have just purchased an iPhone 5c and have been trying to set an email account on it.  Under the menus I have gone in for an "Other".  Having enetered the email address and password the phone automatically sets up an IMAP account and I need it to be a POP3 account - I am not being given the option.  What is going wrong?

POP3 is considered obsolete. In this age of multiple mobile devices, computers, etc. POP3 creates more problems than it solves. IMAP allows for full synchronization of the entire mailbox and all folders with all client devices. If you read a message on one, it will be marked as read on all client devices. If you delete it or move it on one, the change will be reflected on all devices (and the server, of course). POP3 requires that the message store be managed manually on all devices and can sometimes prevent you from being able to retrieve the message on more than one device at all.
