Moving to Australia with UK iPhone 4 on Vodafone

Hi All,
I'm moving to Australia and have a UK iPhone 4 which is locked to the Vodafone network. I've had it for around a year and I really want to keep it, but not sure how easy iPhones are to unlock?
I think I might stick with Vodafone when in Australia, so I am unsure if it needs unlocking at all? I presume so but I'm not sure.
Thanks,
DK

So once Vodafone unlock it, I can put any SIM card in, i.e. a foreign/international one, and it'll work fine?
The main problem is I cannot test this until after I have moved, as I won't get my Australia SIM until I'm over there!
Thanks for your help,
DK

  • Moving to Australia with my Imacs....

I am moving to Australia and have two Imacs. Love them. Want to keep them. Can they run indefinitely on an international power adapter or do I need to change out the power source eventually. I don't want to sell them and rebuy over there.

When I say adapter, I mean an inexpensive plug adapter like found on this page.
Down the page are universal adapters to easily adapt a power cord from anywhere in the world to the wall blades used in both Europe and Australia.

  • Moving to Belgium with my iPhone 3gs

Hello everyone, I am moving to Belgium next week and I just updated to IOS 4.1. It is becoming apparent that I will not be able to unlock my phone on my own between now and then and I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a couple things I am curious about.
I am certain that AT&T will not unlock the phone for me, but will a Belgian carrier (I am guessing Mobistar) be able to do it for for a fee? Should I try one of the online software solutions that charge for unlocking the phone?
I know that I will have to terminate my AT&T contract early, but do they have a policy that would benefit me if I can prove to them that I moved overseas? (IE relocation services).
If there is some crucial bit of info I haven't thought of, please let me know.
    Thanks everyone,

No. Another official carrier for the iPhone in another country that sells the iPhone as officially unlocked won't be able to send an unlock request to Apple for an iPhone that is carrier locked with AT&T or for an iPhone that was sold as carrier locked with another carrier in the same country or in another country. The unlock request to Apple must come from the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked with.
Should I try one of the online software solutions that charge for unlocking the phone?
Hacking an iPhone for any reason is against Apple's license agreement for the iPhone, is not supported by Apple directly or indirectly via these discussions, and voids the warranty if the iPhone remains under warranty. When installing a firmware update on an iPhone that was hacked to be unlocked re-locks the iPhone to the carrier the iPhone was sold as carrier locked with and the hack used to unlock the iPhone likely won't be compatible with the update. Restoring the iPhone with iTunes if wanted or needed re-locks the iPhone as well.
AT&T should waive the early contract termination fee if the iPhone remains under contract in this situation and best for you to sell the iPhone to someone in the U.S. and use the proceeds to purchase an iPhone in Belgium.

  • Moving to Germany with the iPhone

    All,
I just purchased the iPhone and think it's spectacular. Now I found out that I may relocate to Germany in the near future (it's a business thing), and I'm worried that I won't be able to use my iPhone there... In case the phone is not SIM-locked (I think the SIM card can be exchanged), does anyone know what needs to be done in order to use the iPhone in Germany?
I heard T-Mobile won the exclusive marketing of the I-Phone there... Will I have to sign up to T-Mobile there? Or will I also be able to use Vodafone (my preferred mobile carrier in Germany)?
    Regards,
    Anja

    1) ATT requires a 2 year contract. I just upgraded mine from an existing contract (running for approx. one year) for the use of the iPhone and now wonder whether a move to a different country not will provide the grounds for early termination - without penalty.
When you activated your iPhone, you agreed to and began a new 2-yr contract with AT&T that was effective on the iPhone activation date. Moving to Germany should be grounds for AT&T to allow you out of your contract without being charged the $175 early contract termination fee but I don't know AT&T's policy in this regard. I worked for a large corporation for 17 years and when transferred, the company paid an additional one month's gross pay to take care of such things as having to pay an early contract termination fee or losing a deposit if renting a place to live, the same for a personal cell phone contract, any required deposits at the new location for living arrangements, utilities, etc.
    2) I read on CNN (and several techblogs) about iphonesimfree.com, who sell an application to unlock the iPhone and make it useable for any GSM system, with any carrier anywhere in the world. Nowhere is Apples or ATTs position available on this. Any thoughts on this as a solution to this sim-lock dilemma?
It isn't against the law to unlock a carrier locked phone but Apple nor AT&T is obligated by law to make the process easy or to unlock the phone for you and this will also void your warranty. But this won't matter anyway since you probably won't be able to have an iPhone purchased in the U.S. repaired or replaced under warranty anyway while in Germany or anyplace outside of the U.S.
The iPhone sold in Germany might be a 3G phone or have an additional feature, etc. that your current iPhone does not include which is why I would sell your iPhone here before leaving and purchase the iPhone sold in Germany when arriving there.

  • Hi, I bought my iPhone in Canada but have moved to Australia. I need to speak with someone at Apple Canada what is the best way to do this? Is there is an e-mail address?

Hi, I bought my iPhone in Canada but have moved to Australia. I need to speak with someone at Apple Canada what is the best way to do this? Is there is an e-mail address? When I call the Apple Canada number it says I can't call from my location.

In what way did you buy your iPhone? If you paid full price at the Apple Store then your phone should be provider unlocked and should work with practically any SIM card you choose to insert in it. If you bought it cheaper with a contract then it's provider locked then your best bet is to call your cellular provider in Canada. Be sure to note your IMEI number (Settings > General > About) as they're going to need it to do an unlock. Be aware they may or may not charge for this.

moving to Australia. Will my iphone be able to work there for an Australian provider?

Your iPhone will work there even if you keep your current US carrier.  However, you'll get hit with the high international charges.
If you want a local carrier you have to have an unlocked iPhone.  If you do not have one they are easy to busy as the Aussie's require an unlocked option on mobiles unlike the US.
One word of advice.  If you plan on getting a land line in your home or cable TV.  Look to the same carrier for both your iPhone and land line.  Aussie mobile charges are different than what you are use to in the states.  You will have to a lot of reading between Aussie carriers to see which plan you want.  Getting the wrong plan can be costly.
All Aussie carriers that offer land lines do not charge if you are calling someone with the same carrier.  If you have OPTUS then anyone with OPTUS means no charge, it's free except if you have the wrong text message plan.  Call from OPTUS to Virgin and you'll get hit with charges.
    Confusing I know.

  • Moving to Australia-"Legal" way for iPhone to work?

Excited to say we've just been notified of a transfer to Perth. I currently own an iPhone 3GS (not quite a year old, still under warranty). Is there a legitimate, legal way to take my current phone and have it functional in Australia with a new Australian number? (i.e. will Apple condone under any circumstances the exchange of SIM cards when moving?)

All cell phones are sold as either carrier locked(will only work on that carrier's network) or unlocked(will work on any carrier's network). Unfortunately for you, ALL iphones sold in the US are carrier locked to AT&T with no way to officially unlock them as AT&T does not unlock iphones for anyone for any reason. Only the carrier that an iphone is locked to can authorize its official unlocking and AT&T will not do that for the iphone. Your best course of action is to sell your current iphone & purchase a new one when you get to Australia. Be aware that if you "hack" your phone to unlock it, you will void ALL warranty & support.

  • Buying an American iPhone, moving to Australia...

    Hello!
My boyfriend wants to get me the new iPhone for Christmas, but I'll be moving to Melbourne Australia next year for a grad program. Could I use the American iPhone in Australia with Australian cell service? How would this work without roaming charges?
Thank you so much in advance! Any help or advice is appreciated.
    Chelsea

Your boyfriend has to buy an officially unlocked iPhone for you, and I don't know if and when Apple starts selling the new iPhone 5 unlocked in the USA.

  • Moved from Australia to Singapore with a new phone account iphone4

    Hi all.
I've just moved from Australia to Singapore. I have my new micro sim from Starhub
But when I put it into the phone I get a " no service" message. Oddly though when
I take the micro sim out of my wife's iPhone her company provided for her here and put it inline
it finds the network straight away. From this im assuming it's not an issue like the
Phone being locked ( which it shouldn't be) but I'm puzzled as to what my next
Step should be. I read somewhere that a local version of iTunes will update the setting in my phone.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks
    Mgadams

Yes, the cracked screen voids the warranty. Had you exchanged it when you first experienced the problems and before the screen cracked, then it would be covered under warranty and replaced for free.

  • In Australia, how much would the gap cost to exchange an iPhone 4S 16g with an iPhone 4S 32g?

In Australia, how much would the gap cost to upgrade an iPhone 4S 16g with an iPhone 4S 32g? I really need more space, I didn't know that 1,000+ photos would take up this much room!

Apple does not do trade in
You would have to sell your iPhone  and buy a new model
Apple Prices no carrier lock see here on Apple Store AU
    http://store.apple.com/au
Or speak to your carrier if you on contract to see whether  you are eligible for a carrier upgrade
