Moving to Canada-- any hope of unlocking officially?

My son's just moved to Canada. He has an iPhone which was on our family plan. We had called and talked to AT&T service about what to do, and they told me that I could cancel his contract early for $100 because he was leaving the country. My son tried out their international plan for Canada for a month, but it is outrageously expensive compared to plans within Canada, so he wants to switch to a Canadian plan. So I called AT&T to cancel the service today and found out that although they will cancel his service, they still won't unlock the phone. Any suggestions, other than unlocking illegally? I assume that was in the very fine print when he signed up for the phone.

I guess that's what we'll have to do. I could take it myself but then I'd be upgrading to an iPhone contract, and I'm not thrilled with giving AT&T more money at this point.
For some reason I thought you had one already. As said, you don't need to change anything about your contract when you acquire an iPhone by other means than giving AT&T more money. Just put your AT&T SIM-card in and you're essentially set. I'd highly recommend either having a data plan or waiting until monday for iOS 4.0 to do that though (as it allows you to turn off cellular data entirely.)
I suppose we have learned our lesson with AT&T. I'm not sure what my son is planning to do at this point.
Well the lesson to be learned is about locked products. Especially if the provider refuses under any circumstance to unlock them. (Where I live, carriers are required to unlock phones; they can charge to do so within a year of buying it but after that it must be free). Unfortunately for Americans, AT&T is the only large operator that uses standard UMTS frequencies. T-Mobile has UMTS but it uses a frequency (1700MHz) that no one else in the world uses. So unless you manage to procure a multiband phone from T-Mobile you won't be 3G'ing anywhere else in the world, and vice versa if you get a standard phone it won't do 3G with T-Mobile. (Luckily their GSM is standard so you can always use it to, you know, call people.) So essentially if you want compatibility with the rest of the world, you're stuck with AT&T. A Sprint or Verizon phone won't work at all in Europe, for instance.

How can I unlock my iphone from Iusacel (Mexico) I moved to Canada and the Iusacel company told me they cannot do it. Can you tell me how? I want to keep using my iphone.

The normal process is to request the unlock with the carrier.  They process it and pass it on to Apple to be applied to the Apple's iPhone database.  The carrier would then inform you when Apple has provisioned the unlock, and you would restore your iPhone as a new device in iTunes to apply the unlock (you would get a message at the end of that restore as new in iTunes indicating the unlock was successfully applied).  You could then restore your iPhone from backup to get everything back as it was.
However, for some carriers, you seem to beed to complete the iTunes restore from within the country where they provide service.  Regardless, have you tried restoring as new in iTunes to see if it processes any provisioned unlock request?  Just be sure to backup the iPhone first, before restoring as new.

  • Tell me please, is there any way to unlock my iPhone, if the contract is ended and I moved to Ukraine

    1. Try doing a hard reset:
Press and hold both the Home button and the Sleep/wake button simultaneously for about 15 seconds and release when the Apple logo appears.
    2. If that doesn't solve the issue, backup the device and restore it as new.
    In that case, use: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4137
NB: set up as a NEW device because a software issue will be in the backup. If the issue persists after restoring as new, you should offer the device for service.
If you get specific error messages/codes in iTunes when updating/restoring, check this: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3694 for causes and solutions

  • Any hope of a new CourseBuilder?

Any hope of a new version of CourseBuilder for CS3? With

We have hundreds of exercises based on CB? We have tailored

That is what they say. I posted recently on Rapid Intake's
    forums since the
CS3 version they originally said they were working on never
    materialized.
Their president posted back that they had not renewed their
    contract with
Adobe and so Adobe had it back. Whether Adobe plans to
    continue development
or just bury it remains to be seen. I guess it's wait and see
    time.

  • Any hope for Passbook on iPad 2?

I know Passbook isn't on the iPad 2 - which I was extremely disappointed - but I wonder if there is any hope that an update might come out to put Passbook on the iPad 2?  I have read forums that talk about this being the NFC for apple and the iPad doesn't have the NFC chip, but does that matter?  It looked like it had the QR code for tickets, gift cards etc.. and I know that when I fly, I usually have my iPad out.
Anyone hear any thoughts or rumors out there?

i think king penguin might be right, i read in another forum that there is some official Apple copy that states passbook is for iPod touch or iphone only. oh well will have to wait to this time next year on my mobile phone contract to upgrade to an iphone, otherwise will have to shell out £290 for one now! ouch

I have not had any experience in getting any devices repaired so I'm not sure which store to resort to. An official Apple store should more than likely get you what you need, but I'm guessing it's probably more expensive. (if any cost for your situation)
I hope you get your problem resolved.

  • Hi, I have purchased an iPhone 4 in South Korea and I want to use it in India. Is there any way to unlock this in South Korea?

Hi, I have purchased an iPhone 4 in South Korea and I want to use it in India. Is there any way to unlock this in South Korea?

    yes it is very easy...
first of all your phone have to be all paided off.
if your phone is all paid off you can call your carrier (have someone who speaks korean to call) tell them that your moving/visiting your country and you would like your phone to be unlocked. somehow they do this over the phone and it takes three - four days for them to do this.
    its real easy.
if your phone is not paid off you can just tell them that your visiting your country and you would like to use your phone there.

  • How do you change your account to reflect moving from Canada to the United States?

    Hi there!  Merry Christmas!
Just wondering how you can update and iTunes account with new credit card information from an American bank when my account doesn't allow me to change my country to the United States.  I moved from Canada and have an outstanding bill that I can't pay iTunes with b/c my credit card there has been closed.
    Any suggestions?

Because of copyright restrictions by publishers, it is not possible to change your account from one country to another. Your best chance is contacting iTunes Store customer support.

  • Apple via phone say any carrier can unlock my iphone3gs even if my not my service provider

When I called Apple phone support they told me any carrier can unlock my iphone even if my not my service provider. Is this true?

No. Only the carrier an iPhone is locked to can authorize the phone's official unlocking.

  • I moved from Canada to Australia and don't want to blow my iMac up

So I moved from Canada to Australia and dont want to blow the thing up when I turn it on. I'm wondering if I need to get a whole new power cord (different voltages etc) or i can just use an adapter? I'm not really keen on using an adapter though..
    It's a 2011 iMac 27"
Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!
    Katie

2011 iMacs are suitable for power of 100V to 140V, 50hz to 60hz power. So you won't fry the system. You can either use a wall adapter for your plug or buy a new Australia-specific power cord from a local Apple dealer (find one at http://www.apple.com/au/retail) or an Apple Authorized Service Provider at http://www.apple.com/au/service/.  Or try Apple Australia Online at 133 622

  • HT1918 why do i have to create a new itunes account because I moved to Canada from the U.S.?

why do i have to create a new itunes account because I moved to Canada from the U.S.?( My current account won't let me change my address to canada so my billing address for account is incorrect, making it impossible for me to buy anything). Will it affect what I am able to put on my device i.e. already downloaded apps, music, etc?

    This is not possible...

    Change here:
Settings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
You must have a verified billing address & be located in the country whose store you are trying to use.

  • I dropped my ipod 4 into the toilet. I tried turning it on twice, stupidly. Then put it in rice. Is there any hope for my ipod? and if not is there a way to get all 1500 of my photos? Pleaaase help!!!

Hello i dropped my ipod in the toilet (clean water). Once i took it out of the toilet i pressed the home button and within a second it shut off! :( I quickly dried it with a towel and accidently pressed the top button!  D: and put it immediatly into a bag of rice. 3-4 hours passes and i tried to turn it on nothing happened.  I honestly tjougjt it would be dry...stupidly! and now its on the rice and has been in there for an hour since the last time i triwd turnong it on. Is there any hope that my ipod will be okay? and if not could it be repaired? How much is it to repair? One more question what will happen to my photos, is there a way i could atleast get my photos?!? Please please please help!!!!!! please!!!

Hey Posada143, You can still try the rice thing, but do not expect much, as roaminggnome has stated. The rice only works if you do it ASAP and leave the iPod off-- do not attempt use, turn on or charge until it is completely dried out. This is probably academic at this point but remember this for the next time: The drying can take 10 days. You put the uncooked rice and iPod in a sealed bag, change the rice every couple of days. This creates a low humidity environment and draws the moisture out of the iPod, but it takes time. Turn your iPod on to earlier, and you run the risk of shorting out, damaging the components inside. Even if done correctly it can spotty. If you do get the iPod to work (and this may require Resetting, Restoring or attempting to place it in DFU recover mode) the first thing you do is make backups, because you never know how long it will continue to work. As for your pictures, if you can't get your iPod to work, you can try data retrieval companies, however; there is no guaranty it will work and it tends to be very expensive. In the future get in the habit of as making backups, because you just don't know. And invest in and use a water tight case. Hope this helps, Good luck. Cheers.
