Moving to DVD DL - Suggestios?

What should I be aware of regarding software, platform, duplication concepts when producing dual layer DVD's?
I am considering moving some/all of my high school football DVD production to the dual layer mode. I need to get more football highlights onto a single disk than I can currently get with the single-layer disks. I will then need to make multiple copies of the DVD.
I am purchasing a new MacBook Pro to edit and burn the master.
I am looking a a DVD duplicator (1-1, http://www.cdrom2go.com/product-moreinfo.asp?P=E0301133517173DVWD11A) to make copies from the master.
I have DVDSP and am comfortable with basic operations.
Last year I made 48 different DVD's and burned over 350 copies. I need to get better at the production and the dual layer seems to be advantageous right now.

DVD SP since version 2.02 does fine with the layer break point so you can burn with DVD SP, but DVD SP does not let you control the burn speed.
You can make an .img file and burn it in Toast, but Toast sets its own layer break point.
But either way, stick to the Verbatim's like the previous user suggested.

Problems Moving Ripped DVD from Itunes to Ipod
I am having a problem transfering ripped DVD's from the Itunes Video folder to the actual Ipod. I thought one of the cool points of the Video Ipod was that you could play DVD's on it. I know I needed to use special software to achieve this since I researched it here. I am using Handbrake Lite since regular Handbrake look too daunting for me. I also used Isquint, since it was recommened here. I used both without changing anything on both of those progams other than click the go button. The DVD's will play in Itunes but it won't allow me to drag them to the Ipod. They are in the Video folder in Itunes. What in the wild, wild world of sports am I do'in wrong? I assume it's something stupid because the device is stellar. Hope someone out there can lend us a hand.

I am having a similar problem, and i cant contact ipod 2 ask 4 help - its not explainedo online:
my ipod will only upload video podcasts, no ordinary videos, except for one. they are all the same format (.MOV quicktime), and my i tunes has them all on it and plays them fine there, its just when i drag and drop or insert my videos onto my ipod any other way theydont get uploaded onto my ipod like everything else does, there seems no way that i can get my own videos onto it. only one video that isnt a podcast has ever uploaded, and its the same format as the others!

  • Xmp sidecars for images moved to dvd

I have only one catalog with a folder where I put all my images (organized in sub folders). In the catalog settings / metadata tab I marked the option "automatically write changes into xmp". When I change any parameter for the image in the develop module, automatically a XMP is created/updated in the same folder where the image is located.
From times to times I move some folders to DVDs for archiving and to free HDD space. When I do that, I simply record the entire folder (including RAWs, JPGs, PSDs, XMPs, etc) to a DVD-R and delete it from the HDD. Then I import it (from current location, creating previews) back to Lightroom.
I'm happy with this system and it's working ok, except for the following:
I had modified some developing parameters for the DVD's images (after they were recorded and deleted and reloaded from the DVD) but the .xmp files are not updated, since they are read-only now. I want to export the modifications I made after the archiving to refresh the DVD's XMPs with the new ones, but I don't know how. I tried to export as catalog, but no .xmp files are created this way.
The question is: How to export/backup updated XMPs for the read-only media files?
    Any idea?
    thanks
    [windows xp / lightroom 1.3.1]

"unless you need to open the files from Bridge or directly in Photoshop."
Yes, I want to have the XMP settings readily available so I can use the files in other computer(s) that has only Photoshop (not Lightroom).
The answer on flickr says: "move the image+xmp back into your working environment, make your changes and then move to another dvd-r and re-import next time you need to free space"
Well, I already did the changes for the files that *are* on DVD-r. The changes are stored in the Lightroom catalog and I don't want to lose them. I just can't find a way to export them other than exporting as catalog and that way I can't use the updated settings on the other computer I have. Plus I don't like to waste disk space with a big catalog file if the XMPs are so small and do what I want.

  • Conserving HDD Space by Moving to DVDs... How do I re-find files?

I'm going to have to buy another hard drive but at some point I need to stop that and remove the files I don't use often. When I show clients my work, I show them the PSD or JPG files so the RAWs can be put away on DVD.
However, before I start that process I want to make sure I know what's going to happen.
Let's say I have a foler called BobsPortraits and it has the RAWs and the PSDs in the main folder and there is a Prints folder with the high res JPGs.  I'll want to keep the PSDs and JPGs on the hard drive (there are usually only 5-10 of these per folder but often 50-100 RAWs).
What I'd want to do is move the whole BobsPortraits folder to a DVD, and then get rid of the RAWs on the hard drive.  How is the best way to go about doing this?  And what do I need to do if Bob ever calls back and says he wants to go over his photos and maybe order some more?
    Thanks much for the help.
    And yes, I'm Bob.

Thanks for the infor so far.  Now it's going to get long and complicated:
So when I fill up my first set of 1TB drives, I'd just get another set and start filling that one up, and then so on?
Let's say I fill the first one up, or have 3 or 4.  How do I know which one to find what I'm looking for on?
You mentioned to output a catalog.  I'm not sure whether to create one big catalog or create many.  The way I have things separated now looks like this:
    For models:
d:\Clients\Models\Name -- raws and psds are here
d:\Clients\Models\Name\ForWeb -- edited finals at low res web portfolio photos with my watermark
d:\Clients\Models\Name\Prints -- edited finals at high res portfolio shots
    d:\Clients\Models\Name\Proofs -- low res proofs
    And similar for portrait customers:
d:\Clients\Portraits\Name -- raws and psds are here
d:\Clients\Portraits\Name\ForWeb -- edited finals at low res web portfolio photos with my watermark
d:\Clients\Portraits\Name\Prints -- edited finals at high res portfolio shots
    d:\Clients\Models\Name\Proofs -- low res proofs
    However, business is different:
d:\Clients\CompanyName\Artwork -- Any kind of graphic design work like fliers, ads, etc.
    d:\Clients\CompanyName\Docs -- Contracts, invoices, etc.
    d:\Clients\CompanyName\Photos
d:\Clients\CompanyName\Photos\ProductLine1OrDate1 -- raws and psds are here
d:\Clients\CompanyName\Photos\ProductLine1OrDate1\Prints -- edited finals at high res portfolio shots
d:\Clients\CompanyName\Photos\ProductLine2OrDate2 -- raws and psds are here
d:\Clients\CompanyName\Photos\ProductLine1OrDate1\Prints -- edited finals at high res portfolio shots
And I also have my personal photos:
    d:\Photos\2008\Family\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2008\Nature\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2008\Vacation\Location\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2008\Family\[SeveralOtherCategories]
    d:\Photos\2007\Family\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2007\Nature\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2007\Vacation\Location\SeparateDateFolders
    d:\Photos\2007\Family\[SeveralOtherCategories]
As you can see, since I deal with not only photos but artwork, web sites and so on, when it comes to businesses, I'll want to keep that together if possible.  I'm not sure if cataloging those is the way to go there.
However, for model and portraiture clients, it's mainly just photos.  Should each be saved as a separate catalog?  Should modesl be one big catalog or should each model be saved as a separate one?
Same with my personal photos.  You can see that they're in a separate root folder from my clients.  Should I save one catalog per year or just save all of my personal as one catalog?
Now, after that's done and I have everything out on removable drives, I have more concerns.  Do I, at this point, just delete everything from my internal hard drives and only work from the externals?  Or should I work from the interals initially and only transfer to the externals when I'm done with that project?  Like after done editing all of a client's photos, then save it out and delete it from my internal.  Or keep my 2009 personal photos on my internal drive until 2010?
And there's one more big monkey wrench to throw into the gears.  I work from both home and my studio.  I've seen people talk about syncing from a PC to laptop, but I'm trying to sync from a PC at one location to a PC at another location.  I'm running into a lot of problems with that now.  I'll shoot a session at the studio and import the photos to my studio PC to make sure they're backed up immediately.  Then I usually take my card home so that my wife can help me sort through the keeps and deletes and I'll end up with about 50 shots.  I'll then rename the files, rank and keyword them, and often edit most of them from there.  Now I have two completely different sets of files between my home and my studio.  How should I sync them at this point?  I've tried saving the catalog from home and then importing it at the studio, but I've had it do one of two things: either not import it because it's a duplicate (even though the names are different) or it'll import them again but add a "-2" to the end of the file name and keep them both.
    Phew.

  • Moving my dvd's to my macbook

so how do i "rip" copy my dvds to my macbook so i can watch w/o having to load disc?
is it possible w/o buying new software?

If these are commercial discs, they are copyrighted and protected. We can't tell you how to break that protection--perhaps a Google search will give you the answer you're looking for.

  • I removed my optical drive because i added an ssd hard drive. when i plug in the dvd to usb it will not play from the macbooks dvd program. the error message is there was an initialization error, a valid drive could not be found.

I can go into disk utility and see the optical drive and mount what ever cd is in the drive and quicktime will play it. but i would like to have the dvd program recognize the optical drive and open what ever is in it.

Freakin amazing! I installed a new 1TB Samsung SSD in my main hard drive slot and moved my old hard drive into my DVD slot and moved my DVD to an external DVD case and it would never work with movies, only software disks. I have Late 2011 Macbook Pro running Mavericks with 1TB Samsung SSD and a 512GB HDD in the DVD slot with my DVD in an OWC external DVD case.
I tried this trick but at first, this did not work because OxED was saving the new file as a text file and not a unix file. I was perplexed until I read the comments below the article and found the tip to use Terminal to change the saved file to a Unix file. I have never used Terminal before and I had no clue what I was doing, but I just followed the steps to a T and it worked. It took two tries with Terminal.
The comment mentioned "Code:" so I typed that along with the rest and it didn't work. I tried it again and this time just typed
chmod +x (with a space after the x) then dragged and dropped the saved dvd file from my Desktop into Terminal and hit enter. Worked great. Thank you. I have my DVD player back.
I also had to play around with some permissions and I had to remove the original file completely from the "A" folder, before I dropped the new file back in.
Took a little work, but I am back up and running. Thanks to all who contributed to this and yet OWC definitely needs to have all this in their manual or even provide a disk or software download that does this automatically.
Here is the trick: http://macenstein.com/default/2011/07/how-to-get-your-external-super-drive-worki ng-in-lion/
Be sure that the new file saves as a Unix file. If it doesnt save as Unix, you will need to:
    Open Terminal.
    Type:    chmod +x
…with a space at the end (and do NOT press enter yet).
Then, drag the saved file you want to change from whereever it is saved and drop it on top of the Terminal window. The file path and filename should automatically fill in (and you should ensure that there’s a space between “+x” and the file path).
    Press enter.

  • Blue Ray Disk drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro

Ok, I'll make this an official question, where might I find info on BDR drive compatibility with DVD S Pro, Mac Pro, etc? I'm a little surprised that there doesn't seem to be much info available.
I can always use my Pioneer BDR-202 with a windows box, I have several, but I'm trying to get AWAY from them.
Any thoughts, links, etc. welcome, thanks
    Les

Blu-ray offers a level of interacivity that is not possible with DVDs, so it isn't just an different drive that you are getting with Blu-ray. Seeing how Apple didn't upgrade DVD SP with the new FCP Suite 2, it is reasonable to assume they are working on a separate Blu-Ray Studio Pro, that is going to be completely different than DVD SP. Adobe Encore's support for Blu-Ray is extremely buggy, so obviously moving from DVD programming to Blu-Ray programming isn't just a simple tweak to the code.
Apple doesn't pre-announce software they are working on so this is all guess work, but it is reasonable to assume that they are working on a Blu-Ray programming application. Be patient. Do you really have the money to burn on the bleeding edge of new technology? A single Blu-Ray burnable disc sells for $20. Two months ago the exact same disc sold for $45. Prices will continue to fall as things stablize.

  • Cannot play DVDs when connected to TV

    Hi guys,
I have a first generation Titanium PowerBook G4 (400MHz). Still using System 9.2.
Anyway, the DVD player works fine in the notebook by itself. When I connect to my Sony Wega through a S-video cable, I can see the desktop but the DVD player won't fire up. Keeps giving me an error message about thr video card not supporting the resolution or something like that (Sorry, I cannot be more precise. It happened late last night).
This is the first time I have tried to connect the Powerbook to a TV, so I don't know whether I am doing anything wrong. I tried playing around with the resolution, but that did not seem to solve the problem. Also any recommendations of what audio cord I should be using to connect to my audio inputs on the TV.
    Thanks in advance.
    Rajneesh

    Rajneesh,
I have tried to use the Titanium Powerbook G4, running 9.1, to play DVDs on a TV. One of the posts said this may not be a good idea, so maybe you don't want to do this, but here is my experience.
I was using my mother's computer, and I don't have it with me, so I can't double-check that what I think worked was actually what did work, but I can tell you what I did and how far I got with it.
Like you, I was able to get the desktop on the TV. I could either mirror it (so the laptop and the TV had the same desktop) or use it the TV to extend the Mac desktop.
I got the message you mention when I fired up the DVD. I trried changing the resolution, and I thought I got it to
work that way, but later it seemed not to work. Then I got it working by turning off the mirroring. So when the two screens were separate, not mirrored, the DVD would play.
I wish I could tell you that it played on the TV, but it didn't. Because my mother was so impatient with me and the computer at this point, I gave up fiddling and we just watched the DVD. But I think that with a little more fiddling, I could have moved the DVD picture over to the TV (for example, maybe I could have just grabbed it and moved it to the TV).
    Good luck to you,
    Nancy

  • "Rolling" interference on DVD player

I've run out of ideas so hoping somebody here can think of something I haven't tried.
The office just bought a new DVD player (Panasonic DVD-S53) and VHS (JVC HM-DT100) to transfer video/audio to FCP. Both replaced previous models that needed to be retired. Both are going into a Comprehensive Video Group CVG-4X4s vertical interval switcher.
Here's the problem: the DVD player is having some sort of interference problem that is causing a rolling video 'artifact.' We've tried everything we can think of. Switched cables, switched it from SVHS to regular video out, moved the DVD player away from all electronics, plugged it into another surge protector. Moved the Switcher
It only is affecting the DVD (the output of both goes from the Switcher via the same cable and the VHS looks perfect).
    Any other suggestions?

Huh...other threads have said that using things like MPEG Streamclip or Cinematize will make footage look worse due to the whole 'uncompressing/estimating of missing frames' thing...so who knows what to believe?
Unfortunately need to use DVDs sometimes...some publicists only have B-Rolls on DVD, actors need Demo Reels, etc. etc. etc.
Seem to have figured a work-around (having it go directly to the Sony DSR-45 instead of the switcher...causes a few more steps, but the interference has all but vanished. Still don't understand why the DVD player is the only device affected but...there you go!)

  • P55-GD65 (Bios 1.6) Need help with RAID-1 and SATA DVD-RW

Sorry if this has been already asked; did a search.
    Trying to configure 2-Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 750 GB drives in a RAID-1.
I also have a SATA DVD-RW plugged in as well.
I enabled RAID mode = RAID in BIOS, pressed CTRL-I when booting to enter Intel's RAID configure screen, when there set the RAID 1 volume, exited.
Booted into Windows XP, went to load the RAID driver and..... no DVD-RW to read the disk. ?
Back in the BIOS, sure enough, all the SATA devices had disappeared except for SATA 7.
Is this a restriction of Intel RAID - that you have any RAID, all the SATA ports are RAID only?
I couldn't find any settings to choose which SATA ports are RAID and which are not.
    Thanks,

Quote from: NovJoe on 11-February-10, 22:03:57
Try to move your DVD drive to another SATA port.
I did end up moving the DVD-RW to SATA7 and yes it shows up always.
But that is a disappointment. Apparently, with these Intel SATA controllers, RAID is an all or nothing proposition - turn on RAID and that will be the only use for SATA1-SATA6. At least that's my theory; Intel doesn't spell this out. This is a bummer for me, as I had hoped to use SATA1 and SATA2 for a RAID-1 and hang other devices off SATA3-7.
I could use the Jmicron RAID, as that uses just two ports, but that occupies SATA7 and SATA8, and (apparently) SATA8 is the eSATA connector on the rear panel - not very useful for a RAID.

  • Help.. First Time Using DVD Studio Pro!!

OK .. this is my first time using DVD Studio Pro. Before this I have always used IDVD for my Final Cut Projects, but I now need to branch out!
I've hit a bit of a brick wall. I've watched the video tutorials and tried to read the instruction manual, but it's heavy going!!!.. can someone help me get over the hump?
    Here's where I've got to:
    - In my Assets tab I have my two file - Test.mov QT Video File and Test.mov QT Audio file. Both are yellow uncompressed video. I also have a templates folder.
    - I chose the template called brush cover which I can see under the menu tab on a window. If I go to that same window and select the graphical tab I can see a menu 1 and track 1.
    - In my timeline I have dragged my Video and adui assets over and can see them and actually play the movie.
    - What is also worth mentioning is that I can also see the 18 chapter markers that I created in FCP.
    - Now I hit the brick wall!!.
    - Back in my menu I see 8 buttons. In my timeline I have 18 chapters. How do I transfer my 18 chapters over to my menu so that I have 18 buttons each one representing a chapter?
    - I'm sure that it's obvious and a silly question.. but for a rookie like me who's trying to figure this out from scratch it's not easy!
Thanks for any advise!!.. also if anyone has a good 'idiot's guide' for ex iDVD people moving to DVD Pro then I'd really appreciate it!
    Many Thanks!
    Steve.

You can duplicate your 8 buttons menu so many time as you need to include your 18 chapters, creating a simple new button to navigate through Chapter Menu1, Chapter Menu2, etc.
Or you can duplicte&resize buttons to fit more of them in a single menu, but 18 button chapters could be too much for a comfortable navigation.
Thanks for any advise!!.. also if anyone has a good 'idiot's guide' for ex iDVD people moving to DVD Pro then I'd really appreciate it!
You can use the Search feature in this forum and almost for sure you'll find any answer you need, in particular for basic stuff.
You can visit Drew13's site [DVD Step by Step|http://www.dvdstepbystep.com] for some good tutorials, and Drew13 uses to stay tuned here to help you too!

  • DVD playback stutters, freezes

I made a DVD from old family movies as a Christmas present for my siblings. I used iDVD to make the disk image, converted it to an ISO file on the Mac using OS X's Disk Utility, and burned it on my PC. (My Mac doesn't have a Superdrive, so I used Nero to burn the ISO image on my PC, and did a bit verification when it was done to make sure the burn was good.)
It plays fine on the Mac, but on a consumer DVD player, the disc plays for maybe 20 minutes, then the video starts to stutter, and eventually the DVD player makes clicking noises and stops playing. The same disc will play longer in a PC, but it eventually stops there, too. The slide show part of the disc doesn't play at all on the DVD player, and plays poorly on a PC (a recent Dell laptop).
This is a real bummer for me - I worked a long time to make the video as good as I could get it from 50 year old films, and on the Mac it seemed to play perfectly.
So, is the issue with iDVD (and I need to start over with a PC-based authoring package like Nero or Easy Media Creator)? Or is it something else?
Any suggestions are appreciated - I really would like to get these films moved onto DVDs my family can watch (instead of using them as coasters).

    Hi There,
DVD playback stutters, freezes after about 20 minutes. I scoured the net for answers to this dilema and spoke to the highest technicians at apple who couldn't help me.
Through much frustration and many bad burnt discs I asked them to replace the DVD burner in my new G5 - Voila it stopped.
The answer is replace the burner in your Mac.
Hope you fine this the answer to your problem

  • Lenovo G580 boot from DVD

I have a Lenovo G850 with Win8 on it and want to dual boot it with Linux Mint. I've created the Mint DVD but can't get the laptop to boot from it. I've turned off UEFI, moved the DVD above the HDD in the boot priority but nothing. The actual boot menu where you choose a device to boot from doesn't even show the DVD drive to be able to boot from it.
    Can anyone help?

    hi richclever,
That's a weird problem you got there. If the ODD is detected under BIOS, have you tried to:
    1. Reset the BIOS to default settings by pressing F9, then F10 to save the settings and try to launch the boot manager again by pressing F12 during startup and see if the ODD selection is there.
    2. Tried to boot the linux mint DVD that you burned into another PC
    3. Tried to use a different burning software like imgburn to burn the Linux Mint iso.
    4. Tried another bootable DVD to see if it can boot from it.
If the above procedure doesn't work and your bootable linux mint dvd works on a different PC, there might be a problem with the ODD lense.
You might be interested in creating a bootable linux mint usb.
    Hope this helps.

  • How is my DVD drive working when it isn't supposed to?

definitely not a complaint, but I recently put some spare parts from upgraded machines in my beige, an NEC superdrive (unsupported for iApps, but bootable in 9 & X), an old rage card WITHOUT the DVD decoder, and a 450MHz processor pulled from a B & W. runs Jaguar now beautifully. I put in a DVD the other day to see if VLC might be able to play a DVD since I'd heard that without the DVD decoder and without being booted into 9 the beige G3's just wouldn't work with Apple's DVD player in X. by default the DVD launched Apple DVD and it played, perfectly.
is there a decoder maybe in the drive itself or some other explanation for how this is working? like I said, NOT a complaint, just confused (in a good way).

Yes, playing DVDs with the on-board Rage video is a surprise. While Apple moved the DVD decoding into OS 9 software (Altivec not required), supposedly a video card equivalent to the Apple Rage 128 (16 MB VRAM), found in B&W G3s and beyond, was required for the Apple DVD Player to function properly. For the Beige G3s that meant a Rage Orion or better. But, if it works off the on-board video, more power to you.
Does the DVR show up in ASP? Does ASP show it as "Burning Supported"?
